PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It was my pleasure to attend the Junior Band Concert on Tuesday. The excellent progress the students have made was very evident to myself and the parents who attended and a credit to the instrumental teaching staff.

Our Presenta on Evening held last Tuesday was a wonderful evening, recognising over 250 students for Academic Excellence, Outstanding Applica on and for Swimming Sports. I am very proud of their achievements. Congratula ons to our Semester 1 Dux Recipients:

Our College Captains, Ashleigh, Borna, Noah and Delaney were excellent Masters of Ceremonies and our student

performances by the Stage Band, Vocal Ensemble and Vocalist Kelsey Dowler were outstanding. Thanks go to all

who were involved in the evening, par cularly to Ms Rebecca Hann for her work in ge ng everything organised.

Thank you to all of our staff, families and friends for coming and suppor ng these young people.

I asked families on this evening to consider the educa onal journeys each of our students are on and the diverse

career pathways they face in the future, especially when the Founda on for Young Australians reports that 15 year

old students today will have 17 different jobs in five different careers, some of which have not yet been invented.

There are many pathways from school that can lead to a rewarding career and as part of our Rich and Varied

Pathways focus, we offer diverse subjects and extra‐curricular ac vi es to assist our students in making a successful

transi on to further educa on, training and employment.

During the past 10 days, students have competed in the Athle cs Carnival, teaching staff have been involved in the

Literacy For Learning PD, students have experienced a wide range of extra curricular ac vi es such as the

Mornington Peninsula Community Camp, Legal excursion to Lodden Prison, Cycle Camp, Hoop me Basketball

Coaching and SSV Basketball, VET Outdoor Educa on Mountain Biking, Year 9 PE Careers presenta ons, Year 12

Biology have been to the Gene Technology Centre, Year 8—12 enjoyed Mo va onal Media presenta ons and of

course, Hollows Day yesterday where ac vi es highlighted the difficul es associated with vision impairment and

fundraising when to the Fred Hollows Founda on. I am proud of our students and staff as they ac vely sustain the

posi ve culture and experiences at our school.

The last four weeks of this term will pass very quickly, and we strongly encourage parents and students to book

promptly for Parent Student Teacher Interviews. These interviews are an opportunity to provide feedback on your

child’s progress and goals for this year. The parent portal opens on Wednesday 13th September to receive Mid

Semester progress reports and to make on‐line bookings for interviews.

In the term break, Year 12 VCE students have access to the TSSM September Holiday Exam

Prepara on Program and I encourage them all to a end.

We sadly fare welled our Business Manager, Mrs Kathy Burke a er 23 years of dedicated

service to the College. Kathy was acknowledged by the College Council and past and current

principals and staff joined together this week to wish Kathy all the very best on her

re rement. The annual Chaplaincy Drive‐In Movie screening ‘Despicable Me 3’ at 7:00pm on

Friday 22nd September and we have four featured performers including 20+ BCDA dancers

involved in the State School Spectacular on Saturday 16th September. This is a great honour

and opportunity, as the Spectacular will be filmed for broadcast by Channel 7. I am very proud of what is being

accomplished in the life of our College, of the way our staff and students support each other and we look forward

to concluding a very successful Term Three. Ms Kerri Bolch—Principal

Last week on Monday and Tuesday, the Year 12 VCAL class went on a camp to the Mornington Peninsula. The purpose of the camp was to meet Personal Development Outcomes, par cipate in team bonding and building ac vi es, and to celebrate the year. On the first day we went to the “Enchanted Maze and Garden” and tested ourselves on the Tree Surfing and enjoyed all of the ac vi es there. There was a 3D maze as well as a hedge maze, a blue gum maze, tube slides, treetop walks, a mirror house and beau fully landscaped gardens. For the night we camped in our own tents in a chilly 5 degrees. The next day we went to the Mornington Preserva on Society and worked on the train tracks at Mornington Sta on. This is similar to “Puffing Billy” and relies solely on volunteers and dona ons to operate. We performed various tasks including building train tracks, pain ng, sor ng out the various sleeper plates, fishplates, S and R bolts and sleeper nails. We ended up building 100m of track that the facilitator said would have taken 6 months of week‐end work to complete. Job well done by Berwick students! Thanks to Mrs Hilleard and Ms Snowball for organising such a great experience. By Remi Mur ka

On Friday, 11th of August, our VET Small Business class made chocolate “Rum” balls. This was rela ve to our current unit that we are learning about which is Quality. We had to inves gate and implement certain quality measures to make sure we had no issues in the produc on process of making the rum balls and make the highest quality product.

We encountered some issues that have shown us different quality measures that could have been put in place. Some of these issues were not reading the recipe properly meaning that the wrong ingredients were used by one group and another group used too much of their ingredients.

Overall it was a fun ac vity and we got to put our recently learned business skills to use in an ac vity teaching us how to apply these skills.

It is hard to believe that we are already seven weeks into Term 3. This term has been as busy as usual, highlighted by the course counselling evenings with our Year 9 and 10 students. These sessions presented us with the opportunity to work closely with our students and their parents. Throughout these sessions, we were able to map out the best possible pathway for each of our students which was rewarding.

Our Hollows 7.5 class recently designed, pitched and generated a newsle er that reviews Semester One. This newsle er is available on our Hollows Google Classroom page, and we would encourage all Hollows parents to access this newsle er. Congratula ons to one of those 7.5 students, Andrew Bull, who recently par cipated in the State Li le Athle cs Cross Country Championships and finished 10th in the State.

We also had our Athle cs Day on Friday 25th August and it was an awesome day. The students that a ended were

enthusias c and got heavily involved in the program. The par cipa on of these students led to incredible results.

Every single score update throughout the day had Hollows in first place. Many of our students performed well,

but a special men on has to go to Harrison Sala who managed eight first‐place finishes throughout the day.

Berwick College Newsle er — Issue 8 2017 Celebra ng 40 Years of Growth 9

It has been another successful few weeks at Chisholm Chargers HQ. Fresh from an outstanding Chisholm Day, our students have been excelling in many areas across the school. One such achievement are our Dance students. Here is an account from dancer Ayme Wharley of CH4.

Na onals 2017 was an amazing experience, despite the fact that we had to wake up at 4am, ready to be at school by 5am. Our cabins were really nice and there were 2 big rooms which were perfect to prac se our dances in. A er we got se led in, we had a 2 hour training session, dinner and went on a late night beach walk without our phones as a bonding ac vity.

The next day we were up bright and early for a 4 hour training session. Following this, we all went on a trip to the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre. It was massive and we spent the whole day there and shopped and bought food!! By the me we got home, it was dinner me. We trained again and then we all watched a movie but decided to cut it short as we had to be up early because the comp was tomorrow!

On the day of the Compe on, we did really well. The VET Dance Girls came 2nd, Year 8/9 Contemporary Girls came 3rd and Year 8/9 Jazz Girls came 2nd . There were some great individual efforts too.

I would also like to give a huge thankyou to all the teachers that gave up their me to come to Na onals and help out! Special shout out to Ms. Clish, Ms. Campos, Ms. Pyke and Mrs. Nicholls. Also to Mrs Silfio for organising the Compe on too!

O’DONOGHUE DAY On August 17, the College celebrated O’Donoghue Day. All Chisholm students were ac vely busy during Home Group; comple ng a wide variety of tasks, including word searches, guess the orange characters, flags and spor ng teams. Chisholm 6 again won 1st place with the highest amount of points. Overall, Chisholm came 4th; which was a fantas c result.

O’Donoghue Day raised funds for the Watarrka Founda on and a number of Chisholm students assisted the cause by purchasing a sausage and drink at lunch me.

PRESENTATION NIGHT – ANOTHER SUCCESFUL NIGHT Another important event in the School Calendar are the Presenta on Night Award Ceremonies. There were a number of Chisholm Charger students who received cer ficates on the night in a number of areas; academic, spor ng and VET/Flexible Learning. The night was a huge success and the Chisholm Learning Team would like to commend Ms Rebecca Hann for all of her hard‐work and effort in organising the night. There are two achievements we would like to acknowledge for the newsle er. Holly Moulday (CH6) was announced as the joint Year 7 DUX for semester 1. Claire An (CH4) was also recognised as joint Year 10 DUX. This is an amazing result. Well done, girls!

ATHLETICS DAY – UNDERDOGS COME 2ND Undermanned and branded the underdogs, the Chisholm Chargers overcame adversity to place second at the Athle cs Day. It was le to Captain Tegan Langeveld (CH4) and Year 11s, Lachlan Wilbourne (CH7), Samuel Psyhakis (CH7) and Arjun Sritharan (CH4) to rally the Chargers and they did a marvellous job. It was fantas c to see all of the Chargers par cipate in some capacity. The Chisholm Chargers represented the College with pride. We had par cipants in Field events, such as Long Jump, Discus, Javelin and Shot‐put. We watched many Chargers tackle the 100m, 200m, 800m and the Relay events. It was truly a fantas c, inspira onal result and we are thrilled with the performances of each individual. Special shout out to Aimee Hyde (CH5) for the photos of the day too !

Here is also an account of Athle cs Day from Year 7 Chisholm Charger, Cooper Pantano (CH4).

Athle cs Carnival was a fun and exci ng way to spend the day. My mates and I had a great me. We did most of the events and even made a relay team. Unfortunately we didn’t do so well but Chisholm sure made up for it. I’m pre y sure we ended up having 5 teams in one of the races! But not only did we have so many people in each race but we even won most of them, so we were pre y stoked to hear that we could s ll win Athle cs Day overall.

Personally, I broke some PB’s, although unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win the events, but I was proud of myself for only missing two of them. I s ll had heaps of fun, especially with the novelty events, the sumo suits and the bungee run were the best. When you jumped as the bungee was pulling you, it felt like I was flying through the air, but then that all ended when I fell face first and got a blood nose.

Luke Purches and Ryan Walsh headed to Western Australia over the weekend to

compete in the once a year Busselton HPV race. The race is 6 hours long which

meant that Ryan and Luke would ride 1 hour at a me then have an hour of rest

and back in the bike again for another hour un l they had completed three hours

each over a six hour period. They started the race well leading the category but

with most other teams having 6‐8 kids in a team fresh legs are be er than legs that

have been in a cart for hours at a me.

The boys came second in their category beaten by some kids who looked about 18

years old and had the hairiest legs and were 6 foot tall. For two

thirteen years olds to ride 3 hours and only get beaten by one team

out of the thirteen teams in their category is a credit. Both Luke and

Ryan rode hard all day and were exhausted by the race finish.

This is a team sport and although the team this me was small they

couldn't have achieved this without each other.

Berwick College Newsle er — Issue 8 2017 Celebra ng 40 Years of Growth 13

Last week, students who had excelled in their learning during Semester One were recognised at

the Celebra on of Achievement ceremony at the Berwick Church of Christ. We congratulate the

following Flynn students for achieving Outstanding Applica on and/or Academic Excellence in

their Semester One subjects.

Year 7‐ Kayla Defilippis and Mitchell Smith Year 8‐ Phoebe Lawless, Cooper Lines, Sheridan Venables, Mackenzie Witchell and Hayley Woolfe Year 9‐ Austeyn Bates and Madison Francisco Year 10‐ Timothy Boler, Luchitha Cooray, Kaine Foster and Luka Dokanovic Year 11‐ Madelyn McLean, Ashley Gerdan, Madison Gerdan, Tamsyn Pentland and Piper Van Hout

On Thursday 17th of August, Flynn students, together with O’Donoghue students, par cipated in the ‘Walk for Watarrka’ on the Athle cs Track. Students walked many laps with their friends, completed obstacles and did some old fashioned skipping. This was to raise funds to help the Watarrka community realise the dream of a secondary school building in their remote community. Combined with the O’Donoghue Learning Team fundraising BBQ, students were able to raise $1,500 towards the cause.

Last week we had our annual athle c sports. It was great to see Flynn students adorn their purple bandanas and involve themselves in the events of the day.

On the 7th of September Flynn will be hos ng the annual ‘Ba le of the Bands’ compe on. All funds raised at this event will be added to our fundraising tally. The whole school will converge to the stadium to witness the array of musical talents at our College in a fun compe on. We ask that all students bring a gold coin dona on on the day.

Congratula on to Phoebe Wallan of Year 10 who has just returned for the United States where she competed in the

World BMX les in South Carolina. Phoebe finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in her qualifying events and made it to the

finals. What a great effort.

O’DONOGHUE DRAGONS

We couldn’t be prouder of our team over the past few weeks. Our students have achieved excellent results in

many different areas and we would like to congratulate them all on doing such a great job.

It was great to catch up with many of our O’Donoghue families at the recent course counselling nights. We hope

the evenings were useful in helping students decide their future pathways. Based on the subject selec ons, we

have many talented students in many different areas and we look forward to seeing the dedica on and studious

effort required to be successful in these choices.

We would like to congratulate Dylan Gonzalez on receiving the Semester 1 DUX of Year 9 at the College’s

Presenta on evening. Dylan has worked extremely hard to achieve the results for this award and we wish him all

the best in aiming for DUX again this semester. Recently Ryan Walsh from 7.9 competed in the Busselton HPV

race in Western Australia. He raced with Luke Purches from Kenny and the two, working as a team, were able to

come second in their category! Congratula ons boys.

On the 17th of August, we celebrated O’Donoghue Day with our inaugural ‘Walk for Watarrka’. With the Flynn

Learning Team, we worked together to raise money for the Watarrka Founda on who support indigenous

children of the outback by raising awareness and walking laps of the Athle cs Track. As a team, we were able to

raise $1,429.55 which we are extremely proud of. These funds will go towards establishing a Secondary School in

the Kings Canyon area so children currently a ending primary schools can obtain a higher educa on while

remaining with their families and staying on their land.

Finally we would like to thank all the students who got involved in the Athle cs Carnival last week. While we are

s ll awai ng final results, the effort and par cipa on from all who a ended was impressive.

SENIOR SCHOOL

The end is nearing for our Year 12 students; Unit 4 studies are well under way and classes are preparing for their final assessments. All course content and assessment will be finalised by the end of this term to allow for revision to take place for the weeks remaining in term 4. As such, unscored and applied learning students are eligible to complete their courses by Thursday September 21st, providing that they have met all outcomes and been signed off by their classroom teachers. If outcomes are not comprehensively completed by this date students are expected to return in term 4. It is impera ve that all Year 12 students maintain a posi ve work ethic throughout this busy period and remain up to date in all of their classes.

To reinforce the importance of effec ve study and organisa on, Year 12 students par cipated in a seminar by Elevate Educa on last week that promoted useful strategies to prep students for their upcoming exams. Students are encouraged to con nue revisi ng these strategies and approach their coordinators for clarifica on and support if needed. Further support will be provided to students in the upcoming TSSM sessions that will run over the September school holidays, students are reminded to return their forms and payment to the main office as soon as possible; these sessions are an excellent opportunity to hear from experienced professionals in the field and prepare students for the demands of the VCAA examina ons.

Students were provided with a small reprieve from their studies last Friday, August 25th, when they were able to par cipate in the College Athle cs Carnival during an extended lunch break. Many students demonstrated their skills outside of the classroom, op ng into events such as high jump, long jump and 100m/200m sprints. The students achieved personal successes and highlighted the importance of maintaining healthy outlets to balance the stress of Year 12.

Lastly, the College Presenta on Night saw many of our Year 12 students awarded for their dedica on to their studies, receiving cer ficates of outstanding applica on for commendable results across a number of subject areas. Also, a special men on to our College Captains, Ashleigh, Delaney, Noah and Borna, who spoke admirably on the evening in front of a very large audience, represen ng our College to an excep onal standard. Year 12 Coordinators, Ms Brodie Andersen and Ms Lexie McGill.

YEAR 12 EXAM PREPARATION PROGRAM ‐ RUN BY BERWICK COLLEGE Berwick College will be running Unit 3 and 4 revision sessions conducted by TSSM during the September/October

holidays. Sessions start at 9:00am and finish at 5:00 pm. TSSM use highly qualified teachers to deliver the sessions

that have been or are examiners, reviewers or publishers. Program includes:

How to maximize your ATAR Detailed content revision Essen al exam prac ce

Exam techniques Study ps Problem solving strategies

A comprehensive set of revision notes bound, wri en to an A+ level

Booklet containing at least 80 exam style ques ons with solu ons

Students will solve an extensive range of exam style ques ons.

Venue: The sessions will run in the Senior School Centre, which is located at the rear of the College

Cost: The cost of each session is $75 except Outdoor Educa on, which will cost $30 as the session runs from

10am to 1pm. Note: TSSM run these sessions in Melbourne at a cost of $159 each. Payments are due by August

28th. The September /October school holidays is not a holiday for a Year 12 student; it is a break from classes

and students must use the two weeks to kick‐start their exam prepara on. There is no be er way to do this than

with the help of an expert who will ensure their prepara on is thorough and specifically targeted at ge ng the

best possible exam result. I highly recommend the program to students. Mr Mark Woodbridge—Assistant
