PRINCIPAL REPORT

As you will be aware, NAPLAN is being held next week. There is always a great deal of discussion around the worth of these tests. Because we have access to this data, we make the point of using it along with internal data to work out the academic levels of our students, allowing us to

focus on each child’s learning. We use this data to inform our teaching and to make sure our students’ learning has the best growth we can provide. We also use it to determine which students we believe will cope with acceleration into a VCE subject in Year 10. Completing a Year 11 unit in Year 10, and a Year 12 unit in Year 11, adds to the ATAR score used for some tertiary education courses. I have spoken to the Year 9 students, who are completing their final NAPLAN tests, and asked for their full efforts. Our Year 12 results are always pleasing and I would like the Year 9 results to reflect the correlation we know exists. In 2018, after speaking to the students our results improved dramatically, and were much more consistent with our Year 12 results. I am very confident that our students will rise to the occasion and do their best next week.

We also have our Presentation Balls next week. Held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I am looking forward to the emerging of the butterflies from the cocoons. The Rotary Club of Berwick puts a huge amount of time into the preparation of our students and the evenings and I am very grateful for the many years of support we have had from their members.

I am sad to tell you that Assistant Principal David Busteed has left us this week, along with Learning Support Officer Neale Johns. Our thanks go to both of these staff members who have contributed to support of our students and curriculum during their respective times at Berwick College. We wish them both well in their future endeavours.

We have been doing some professional development this year on trauma, particularly the effects on the brain of trauma during childhood. When young people have had trauma during infancy and as a child, their brains develop differently to children who have not experienced trauma. This can most certainly result in extreme behaviours, related to the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response. Being informed of the impact of trauma means we can address the behaviours with understanding and strategies to help regulate the child’s brain, and thus behaviours, with an end goal of helping them to learn and to lead a productive, healthy life.

I am so proud of our teachers and Learning Support staff who care about our students and who work so hard to help each individual child.

You may have heard discussion about the new zones put in place by the Department of Education. I am aware that this is causing some concern for families as the zone for Berwick College has changed significantly. We operate under the Department of Education and Training guidelines which are accessible on https://www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au/

If you are outside our zone and wish to be considered for enrolment, you should write to us with the grounds for enrolment to be considered. We expect that all sibling enrolments will be honoured, as long as the siblings are still at Berwick College. We do not expect letters of endorsement from local Primary Principals.

As the weather has become quite cold now, all students should be in correct uniform, while keeping warm. It is not compulsory to wear the winter uniform, summer uniform is still acceptable, but the winter uniform is warmer. Either uniform requires the correct socks, not socks with the sporting logos on them. The polo top is not correct uniform. All students should also be using the official school bag.

I have been having regular meetings regarding our new Health and Wellbeing Building and it should go to tender very soon. It is exciting to see it finally coming to fruition, and I can’t wait for the build to start.

Students should be very focussed on their learning now, taking into account the feedback from their mid-semester reports and parent/student/teacher interviews. The learning is most important and is our highest priority.

Ms Kerri Bolch—Principal

I am so proud of our teachers and Learning Support staff who care about our students and who work so hard to help each individual child....

READY FOR MARKET DAY 2019

Students of VET Small Business have been working extremely hard in preparing their Market Day Stall for 2019. This year, there will be 5 VET Business classes participating on Market Day. This means over 120 students and 30+ indi-vidual stalls for market day! It is going to be a big day but students are excited for the event! On Tuesday, Mitch Grace, Con Economou and Jordan Acker (Class of 2017) came and spoke to our students about their experiences of 2017 Market Day. Their insights were informative and well received by the VET Small Business class. They provided suggestions on how to promote Market Day and outlined their strengths and weaknesses for the day. We thank Mitch, Con and Jordan for their time. We look forward to another exciting Market Day for 2019. We will see all students there in the C Block Amphitheatre.

VCE UNITS 1—4 TEXTILES EXCURSION

We have had a busy Term 1. One highlight of the term, was our excursion to VCE Season of Excellence – Top Designs, where we had an inspiring talk from designer Christina Exie who is a former winner of the TV series - Project Runway. She gave insight into the fashion industry, and the type of work designers are accustom to.

After our lecture we made our way to the viewing of the Top Design exhibition which showcased some amazing past VCE Product Design student folios and final garments. After lunch we then visited the NGV to see The Krystyna Campbell-pretty Fashion Gift. All students were amazed by the beauty and history in these garments.

A very inspiring day out! Mrs Carla Diaz VCE Product Design Teacher

YEAR 11 STUDIO ART EXCURSION

VCE Studio Arts, has had a very productive start to the year.

A highlight of term 1 was our excursion to the Escher X Nendo Exhibition at NGV, along with a visit to the Top Art Exhibition with a private folio viewing. We were able to view top VCE Studio Art student folios from 2018 , giving students a boost of inspiration and drive needed to complete their own studio process. A very inspiring day by all!

This newsletter’s edition has been written by Natalie Cameron of class 12 VLI.02

On Tuesday, 30th of April, the year 12 VCAL Literacy Class 2 students went on an excursion to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. At 8.50am, we met at the Berwick train station where we started our trip to Flagstaff. Halfway through our train ride, there was an announcement stating that our train was running express from Caulfield, stopping at Richmond then running straight to Flinders street, which would be the final stop and that the train would NOT be running the city loop. In simpler terms, the train route changed and wasn’t going to stop at our station, therefore, traveling to the court was going to be a tad bit more difficult for us.

We got off the train at Flinders street and walked to the court which took us approximately 20 minutes. Finally, we had arrived where we took a group photo and recapped the court rules and etiquette.

These rules included: -Bowing at the Magistrates when entering and ex-iting the room, -No hats or beanies, -No phones, -No headphones, -No talking when observing a court hearing.

We then went through security which was almost like Airport security. We had to put our bags, jackets and contents of our pockets onto a conveyor belt where they scanned our belongings. Then we had to walk through a metal detector where almost all of us buzzed. Girls buzzed because of their watches or jewelry and the boys buzzed also because of their watches but also because of the buttons on their shorts.

Once we made it through security, we were told the numbers of 4 court rooms that we couldn’t go into and given a meeting time. We split up into groups where we then went hunting for an open court hearing that we could sit in on and listen to. There were several interesting cases that we all had the experience of watching. Some were for parking infringements, others were for driving a stolen motor vehicle and having possession/being under the influence of drugs. We then all met at 12.20pm where we left the Magistrates’ court and went out to buy lunch. We had one hour lunch/shopping time before we had to meet up at Melbourne Central to get our train back home.

All in all, I think I can speak for most of my classmates when I say that it was a good day and we all learnt new things today.

LOOK WHAT IS HAPPENING IN VCAL LITERACY -CLASS 2

LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome back everyone. This term the library is getting a mini face lift. We are rearranging furniture to allow for more study tables and putting a charging station at one table to allow devices to be at full strength for research. The non-fiction area is being revamped also. The Library Ladies will be very busy but better still, very productive! The Library is celebrating Dunlop week and looking after our mates. Unfortunately we have many books that are very overdue. Please return these as they belong to the whole school community. Thankyou The Library Ladies

This article was written by Locci Carr, Kye Rowland, Owen and Sam Jewitt of 12 VCAL Literacy Class 2

On Monday 6th of May, at Berwick College, we had Leading Senior Constable Dave Smith come in and talk to us.

He mentioned all the rules and guidelines a police officer must follow to be in the force, he spoke to us about the age a person can be arrested which was 10 years old. He also mentioned the juvenile prison capacity we have here in Victoria. The juvenile system’s capacity in Victoria is 50 teenage girls and 300 teenage boys.

Dave stated that the most common crime scenes he attends is theft such as shoplifting and stolen cars. He mentioned that over the 30 years he has been in the force he has never had to fire his firearm.

It was a pleasure having Dave with us today to listen to all the great stories and tough things you have to do as the life of a police officer, it was a pleasure having him here and we would be more than happy to have him back in the near future.

YEAR 12 VCAL GUEST SPEAKER INCURSION

YEAR 12 LEGAL STUDIES EXCURSION

Our excursion to the County Court and Supreme Court was very insightful, as we were able to deepen our under-standing of the civil and criminal justice system. We were fortunate to be able to sit in on criminal trials in both the County and Supreme Courts which was particularly fascinating as we were able to witness real cases being heard and watch what we’ve learnt about the criminal justice system unfold before us.

We were also privileged to visit the Law Library of Victoria at the Supreme Court which maintains a comprehensive collection of legal resources that can be used by barris-ters and solicitors when they are conducting research for a case. Fun fact: when it was established in 1853, the Law Library was the tallest building in Melbourne!

Overall, it was a very enjoyable experi-ence that will be valuable in the con-solidation of our knowledge surround-ing criminal and civil justice.

MID-YEAR EXAM INFORMATION 2019

YEAR 12 STUDENT VS TEACHER BASKETBALL GAME On Tuesday the 2nd of April the year 12 executive team and captains organised a Teacher vs Year 12 Student Bas-ketball Game. This event was held in order to raise money for a charity which is undetermined at this point in time. The event was a good opportunity for students to play alongside their teachers and classmates for a friendly and exciting competition, that all school students were invited to attend for a gold coin donation entry fee. Overall the event was a success in which students got to share their basketball talents whilst the school supported them throughout.

HOW IS YEAR 12 GOING AT THE MOMENT?

Currently the 2019 class of year 12 are loving the challenges and excitement that this year has brought. The senior school, a safe place for year 12 students to enhance their learning and work with their fellow classmates to achieve the best they can, has become such a positive area and it is so inspiring to see our cohort utilising this area to strive to achieve the best results possible. Recently the college captains and students worked hard to redecorate the sen-ior school with photos of our students and activities they have participated in such as the Swimming Carnival Parade and the Year 12 Students vs Teachers Basketball Game. The new decoration has made the class of 2019 feel at home in our area and represents the friendship and fun within our cohort. It is so encouraging to see students in the senior school before and after school hours, working hard in their year 12 subjects and dedicating their time to the tough year which we are facing. The cohort’s determination inspires and challenges all of our students to strive for the best results and we cannot wait to see what is on store for term 2. Tara Kaur, Ethan Francis, Susie Rake, Himeth Maputugala—College Captains.

YEAR 12 NEWS

Berwick College Newsletter — Issue 4 2019 CRESCAM ‘I Shall Grow’ 9

We welcome students back to Term 2 and remind our students that our winter uni-form will become prevalent with the cooler weather. Please remember to use your school jumpers and spray jackets especially early in the morning to reduce the chances of becoming ill. Hoodies and unapproved items of uniform will be confiscat-ed immediately with a school based consequence given to students not following the uniform policy. We have also noticed that we do have a few students with unexplained absences this term and ask parents/guardians to follow up any absences on Compass or written notes to Homegroup teachers. CROSS COUNTRY We had a great turn out from our Hollows students, which included senior students. Our Year 8 Hollows student Rylan Burchall provided his experiences of the day. 2019 Cross Country was great! We had lots of people participate including myself from year 7 to year 12. The weather was good and made it more enjoyable for everyone involved. The course was 3km including a massive hill to go up which definitely made it a struggle for everyone. It was great to represent my learning team, Hollows and the Basketball Academy. Overall it was a really good day and it was so fun to participate in this event. Rylan Burchall (Hollows 5 – Year 8)

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Our Year 10 Game of Life students completed a week of work experience in the last week of Term 1 and some students enjoyed it so much they continued with their employers full time over the holiday break. Ceili Swords had a fantastic experience and was willing to share with us.

As a result of being in a Game of life class in Year 10 we have to complete a week of work experience. Coming back from a month of holidays working on a dairy farm for Bega I decided I would continue my passion for farming for my work experience. For the five days of work experience I woke up at 5:30 every morning and milked a herd of 300 to 400 cows on a rotary (machine that sends the cows around). This took about an hour and a half including hosing yards and hosing down the dairy etc. I would then go and feed calves pen by pen, which was definitely a hard job if you don’t have patience. After that the days would consist of little maintenance jobs such as fencing, irrigation, tractor work and feeding the herd. Then at 3:30 in the afternoon we would do it all over again. I feel really grateful that I had the opportunity to go and experience the farming world as not many people these days have family or friends that own farms and that can see where the products they are buying comes from. Ceili Swords (Hollows 1 - Year 10)

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT We are excited to announce that Julian Lemon (Year 9) has been selected as a key position player in the Victorian State Rugby League team. Julian and the state team will be competing in a national competition in Queensland during August with the potential of travelling overseas if successful.

Congratulations and good luck with your training Julian and the best of luck in the state team.

program, year 7 students are paired with students from older year

levels to help integrate them into secondary school life. They meet

every 2-3 weeks in home group to complete activities and games based

around school life, team building and interpersonal skills.

MENTOR EMMA DAVIES DESCRIBED THE LAST

SESSION—Mentor Activity – Straw Towers 2/5/19

On Thursday the 2nd of May, the Chisholm mentors completed an ac-

tivity based around cooperation and teamwork. They worked with the

year 7s and competed in creating the tallest tower out of plastic

straws. Everyone was included and had fun participating. Each group had different techniques like cutting the

straws to slide them together, or simply using the tape provided. Towards the last minute of building time, every-

one was in a hurry to add more and more height but instead only damaged their towers. The winning group man-

aged to keep their tower standing throughout the whole 10 minutes. Ms Amy Hooper and Mr Luke Mitchell.

DBT IN SCHOOLS

Berwick College is partnering with DBT in Schools. They are providing psychological services to our school, placing a

school psychologist in our school one day a week. This is very exciting for our school to help student’s develop

resilience, and coping skills for a range of challenges they may be facing. This may include challenges such as;

anxiety, difficulty coping with friendships, grief, and dealing with parents separating, for example. The Psychologist

will focus on helping student’s build important life skills. For students with a mental health care plan from their GP

this service is no cost to the parent. The sessions are confidential and provide an affordable and convenient ser-

vice. If you would like your child to have some sessions with the DBT in Schools Psychologist, you should contact

Kyra from wellbeing (8768 1022) or your students Learning team leader, who can help you engage with this service.

For more information about DBT in Schools you can visit their website at dbtinschools.com.au
