Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
It has been a very busy end to my final term as Headteacher at Cardinal
Newman. Students and staff have had an exciting and fun packed week of
activities to end the year. On Monday students had a wonderful time on the
‘Big Day Out’ at Harry Potter Warner Bros Tour, Drayton Manor, Alton
Towers and Delta Force Paint Balling or for those students who remained in
school the ‘Big Day In’ having fun on Inflatables, Roller Skates, Climbing Wall, Foot Golf and Rounders. On Wednesday
students took part in our annual school Sports Day with some outstanding performances from lots of students. It was a
beautiful day and students enjoyed their ice creams as they watched the different events - including the male staff relay team
losing out to a strong student relay team! On Thursday we had an excellent sports assembly and on Friday we finished the
academic year with our wonderful Mass of Thanksgiving led by Fr Pat before very excited students were dismissed for the
summer holidays!
50th Anniversary Photograph - On Thursday this week students gathered on the
field to produce the number 50 to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary. A huge
thank you to Laurence Moore, Vice Chair of the Governing Body and a Director of the
Holy Cross MAC Board who visited school with his drone ‘Dennis’ to take the
photograph (left). It took nearly all the students from Year 7 to 10 to make the
photograph and there are about 800 children in it! Many thanks also to Mr Hodgson for
organising!
Thank you - Thank you very much to the family of the late Sid Williams, a former World War II veteran who worked with
our students and Dennis Davidson on developing peace in our community. Following the recent visit from Sid’s wife Jean,
son Chris and daughter in law Gillian they sent a generous donation to the school’s fundraising efforts. We will keep Jean
and her family in our prayers.
Staff Leaving - At the end of the academic year we say goodbye to staff who are leaving us. We thank all of the following
staff for their contribution to our school and wish them every success, good health and happiness in the future. From the
school’s Leadership Team we say goodbye to Mr Hodgson, Deputy Headteacher, who leaves us after four years to take up

part time role at King Henry’s. Also from RE, Mrs Gray who leaves after 11 years to take up a teaching role at St Martin’s
Catholic Academy. Mr Rawlins, teacher of Business Studies and Economics, leaves us after 14 years to take up a teaching
role at Bablake. From PE, we say goodbye to Mrs Taylor who leaves after 16 years to spend time with her family, Mr Gray,

ceptionist, Veronica O’Connor who joined Cardinal Newman last September. Veronica leaves us to return to care work.
Baby News - Congratulation to Mr Coughlan and his partner, Ruth, following the birth of Baby Eithne on Monday 8 July.
We are delighted to hear that mother and baby are both doing well and Eithne has already been into her first science lesson!
Finally, I would just like to thank all the staff, students, governors, parents and families for all their tremendous support over

Prayer for the end of the School Year
We praise and thank you God for the gift of this school
year.
It has been a time filled with grace and blessings,
With challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows.
Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer.
Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit.
Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion,
And bless us, according to your will.
Help us return to school with a new spirit and a new energy.
Amen.
Collection of Exam
Results
Following the recent GCSE and A
level exams, students will be able to
collect their results as follows:
Year 13 students can collect their
results from the Pope Francis Hall from 9.00am on Thursday 15 August.
Year 11 students can collect their results on Thursday 22 August
from 9.00am from the Pope Francis Hall.
Year 10 students can collect their English results from the Pope
Francis Hall on Thursday 22 August from 11.00am.
Mr N Versey, Assistant Headteacher D-Day Dennis Returns
A group of Year 10 students had a lovely
afternoon meeting D-Day veteran
Dennis Davison. Students had the
opportunity to talk to Dennis in the
Pope Francis Hall and then
accompanied him to the Peace Prayer
Garden and Normandy memorial.
Following lunch Dennis and the
students visited the Peace Orchard in
Coundon Park.
Dennis had been unable to attend the 75th D-Day
commemorations in June so this was a very special moment for
him and along with his daughter they had a lovely time and
thought the students were great.

GCSE English Language:
Year 9 into 10
Over the last two weeks, all students in
Year 9 have received a letter about their
GCSE English Language exams next year, along with a parental guidance
sheet and transition work to complete over summer holidays.
It is really important that students complete the five tasks specified in
the summer transition booklet and bring these with them to their first
English lesson in September. All students have been given a hard copy of
the work, and electronic copies are available on Class Charts. Any
students who go above and beyond and complete the additional 'Bonus
Tasks' will be rewarded for this accordingly.
Miss K Grieve, Head of English
End of Year Mass Preparation
In preparation for our end of year Mass we have spent time reflecting upon our year and if we have recognised
that we are made in God's image. We thought about the fingerprint of faith that God leaves on us and created
artwork for our tutor prayer spaces to remember this.

Old Uniform Needed
If you have any old uniform, PE kit, trainers, football boots,
school equipment, school bags that you no longer need can
you donate them to the school? They are always in constant
need and Helenea does a great job making sure they are
used well. All donations can be forwarded to Helenea (Mrs
Tabram).
Coventry Foodbank
Donations are urgently required to support the Coventry Foodbank. The Foodbank is a long term project the school is
involved with.
Food bank numbers have increased by 13% in the last year with 1.3 million people now attending them.
Items urgently required are: coffee, sugar (500g or 1kg), rice, rice pudding, long life milk (UHT), tinned fruit, long life juice, squash and toiletries.
If you are able to support, please send your items into school reception. Thank you.
