(ISSP).Wewouldliketothankyouallforsupportingandguidingusinthelasttwoandhalfyears.Withsupport
fromeveryone,wewereabletotakeISSPtonewheightsnotonlywithinourcountrybutalsoacrosstheglobe.
Wearedelightedtosharewithyouthenewaccomplishmentsin�irsthalfoftheyear2017.
Attheoutset,wewouldliketothankyouforattendinginlargenumbersandmakingISSPCON2017agrand
success.ItwasagreatshowofsolidarityandunityamongstallmembersofISSP.TheISSPSecretariatisindebted
toallofyou.Webowinfrontofyouinadmirationofyoursupport.
We all had a great scienti�ic feast at ISSPCON 2017, Jaipur. “Team Jaipur” needs to be congratulated for
conductingamarvelouseventinanexcellentatmosphere.Theyhaveachievednewlevelsinconductingthe
ISSPCONAnnualNationalConference–a featthatwasquiteexceptionalandcommendable.Wethankand
congratulateDrRajeshSharma(OrganisingChairman),DrGauravSharma(OrganisingSecretary),DrReema
Meena (Conference Coordinator), Dr Anjum Joad (Scienti�ic Committee Chairman) and their enterprising
teammates.
TheISSPGoverningCouncilmeetingwithPastPresidentsofISSPwasveryfruitful.Wecouldcollecttheirinputs
aboutthewayforwardforISSP&IAPMforcomingyears.Theirfeedbackswerevaluable.Wealsohadameeting
withState&CitybranchPresidentsandSecretariestoaddresstheirconcernsanddif�icultiesinorderforISSPto
step-inandassistandparticipateinresolvingtheproblemsfacedbyallconcerned.Allofthemappreciatedit
andcamewithfreshproposals.TheISSP�lagsandISSPPresident'sCollarforallISSPState/CityBrancheswere
distributed.EveryonecouldfeelthefreshnessinairwithregardstothenewawakeninginISSP.
IntheAGBMitwasahealthydiscussionallthroughoutwithavisionforISSP'sgrowthinthecomingyears.The
IndianAcademyofPainMedicine(IAPM)implementationwasapprovedbytheAGBMwithfullvocalsupport.It
speaksvolumesaboutourmemberslookingforISSP'sgrowthprospects.Therewasafruitfuldiscussionabout
formationofSpecialInterestGroups(SIG).ThePresidentofISSPDrBBMishraannouncedtheformationoffour
SIG's-NeuropathicPain,Documentation,CancerPain&InterventionalPainManagement.Heexpressedthatin
thenextyearthemodalitiesofbecomingamember,scopeofthecommittee,formationofguidelinesetc,willbe
workedout.Membersrequestedformoreacademicprogrammeslikeconsensusstatementsandguidelinesin
concurrence with support from other societies. The IASP-ISSP Multidisciplinary Evidence Based Pain
ManagementProgrammescheduledforthe2017wasappreciatedbyoneandall.
TheNewISSPPresidentDrGeetaJoshiaftertakingoverfromherpredecessorDrBBMishra,hasdirectedthe
ISSPSecretariattoimplementtheAGBMdecisionsrightawayandgaveusthevisionanddirectivesaboutits
implementation.ThisinvolvedtheformationofSIG,CollaborationwithSocietiesworkingonPalliativeCare,and
initiateISSPaccreditationforPainClinics/CentresasperMCIGuidelines.Sheexpressedthat,memberswhodo
nothaveIDcardtoobtainthesame,astheIDcardswillbemandatoryforelectionsforISSPof�icebearersfrom
ISSPCON2018onwards.Sherequestedthedecisionstobeimplementedattheearliestsothatvaluabletimeis
notlost.

The Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Pain, Dr Kailash Kothari, continues to do a great job in ensuring
continuationoftheprintversionofourjournal.Thesecretariatisgratefultohim.WethankourtreasurerDrP
VijayanandforexcellentfundmanagementofISSP,injustayear-and-a-halfourassetshaveincreasedby30%
duetohispersonalefforts.
WehavealsoinitiatedtheISSPJournalistoftheyearAwardforthebestnewstoryorfeatureonPain
Medicine.Itcarriesacitation,cashprizeandAward.Formoredetailspleasevisitwww.issp-pain.org
Werequestyoutohelpusserveyoubetter. AplethoraofacademiceventsincollaborationwithISSParein
waiting for allmembers at theNational and International levels; namely national level CME's, guidelines
preparationandinvitationforinternationaleventslikeISPP,WorldSpineSummit,SARPS,EPMsoonandso
forth.Staywithustoreapthebene�its.
WearegratefultoallthemembersoftheGoverningCouncilfortheirenthusiasmandfortheirreadinesstocarry
forwardthenewinitiatives.TheirvaluableinputshavebeenofimmensehelpfortheactivitiesofISSPingeneral
andISSPConferencesandmeetingsinparticular.

Onecanseethattheyear2016wasquiteproductiveforISSP.Yeswehavesomemorehurdlestocross,butwith
everyone's support it should not be a problem. We have initiatedwork on Special Interest Group (SIG)
formationunderPresidentElectDrGautamDas.Hehasbeenentrustedwiththeresponsibilityofsynchronizing
withteamcoordinatorsforvariousSIG'sandtheirmembersandadvisorsincollaborationwithGCmembers.

regard.

Itisamatterofprideandprivilegetobeinthehighestpositionof
thisesteemorganization,whichIhadjoinedwhenIwaslearning
painmanagementtechniquesduringmystudentdays!ISSPhas
grown at the same speed, as the technology in a medical
profession and it has kept the pace with the advancement of
knowledge and technology in the �ield of pain science. I am
honoredtobepartofthisorganization!
ISSPison“fasttrack”duetohighlyenergeticanddedicatedteam
ofSecretariat,IAPMandSIG!!!
Theyearstartedwithestablishinggoodcommunicationwithallofthem.Eachworkingtowardstheirgoaland
task.TheCo-coordinators for IASP-ISSPMultidisciplinaryEvidencebasedPainmanagementprogramhave
workedveryhardandhavecompletedtwosessionsoutofthree,verysuccessfully.CongratstoDrPreetiDoshi,
Mumbai&DrSushmaBhatnagar,Delhi.TheSecretariat,IAPMhasstartedcommunicationtoallforquarterly
assessment,examofTraineeandonmanyadministrativeissues.WelldoneDrPradeepJain!!!
DrGautamDas,PresidentElectandhisteamofvariousSIGhavestartedformingguidelinesandSOPs.
Unfortunately,Undergraduatesyllabus formedicalstudiesdoesn't includebasic training inPain. ISSPwill
collaboratewithIndianAssociationofPalliativeCareformakingacurriculuminPain&PalliativeCarefor
undergraduates
PainmanagementrequiresaHolisticapproachtoimproveQualityofLifeforchronicpainpatients.Wehave
memberswhoarepracticingPain&PalliativeCare;therefore,weshallhaveonesessionrelevanttoanother
specialtyintheirrespectivenationalconference.
WehavereceivedtwoinvitationsassupportiveorganizationfromInternationalPainevents.SpineWorld
Summit,aregionalspinesummit,encompassingkeyopinionleaders(KOL)fromorthopaedic,neurosurgery
andotherhealthcarepracticealongwithnumerousacademicassociationsandlocalcountrysupportersin
AsiaPaci�ic,haveinvitedISSPtobetheSupportingOrganizationofSpineWorldSummit2018,whichwillbeth
heldfrom25-27January2018inHongKong.Muchawaited,8 SouthAsianRegionalPainSocietyCongressis
goingtobeheldon24-25Feb2018atDhaka.ISSPwillbepartnertothisevent.

WhenItookoverasPresidentatIndore,inthevaledictoryceremony,Iannouncedtheformationoftheadhoc
committeefortheIndianAcademyofPainMedicinewithDr.RPGehdooasChairpersonandDrs.PradeepJain
andPVijayanandasCo-Chairpersons.
The committee has worked to prepare the required documents, conducted the entrance exam and six
candidateshavenowjoinedastraineesofIAPM(IndianAcademyofPainMedicine).HenceforththeIASP-ISSP
Observershipwillbeforonemonth&Fellowshipfor12months.
I thank them, as well the ISSPmembers and the city and state branches for celebrating theWorld Painth
AwarenessDayonthe9 ofJuly2016inagrandscaleacrossIndia.
Thisyear,weshouldworktowardsestablishingSpecialInterestGroups(SIG)thatcouldformulateguidelines

Theyear2016-17hasbeenagreatyearforISSP.Wehadaplethoraofacademicactivitiesalloverthecountry&alotofnewinitiativesfromISSPSecretariat.

TheyearstartedwithISSPCON2016.Weallhadagreatscienti�icfeastatISSPCON2016atIndore.Wethankand
congratulateDrKKArora(OrganisingChairman),DrPraveshKanthed(OrganisingSecretary),DrJawedKhan
(Scienti�icCommitteeChairman) and their enterprising team. They requirebig applause for their team's
performance.
InFebruary2016,thePresidentofISSPDrBBMishrahadformedathree-memberadhoccommitteetoconsider
theimplementationofIndianAcademyofPainMedicine(IAPM)guidelines.Thepilotprojectinthisregardwas
startedatHyderabad.Thethingsareinplace.Asdecided,theadhoccommitteetenureendedyesterdayafter
receivingconsolidatedreportofoneyear.Followingthisitisimmediatelydissolvedtopavewayfornewteamof
IAPM.Wecongratulatetheteamforpreparingthecurriculum,developingcriteria forcentreaccreditation,
entryexampattern,questionbank,counselingandeffectiveimplementationofprogramme.WethankDrRP
Gehdoo(Chairman),DrPradeepJain(Co-chairman)&DrPVijayanand(Co-chairman)fordoingagreatjobin
thisregard.HereonwardstheelectedbodyofIAPMwilltakeoverasperapprovedplanbyAGBM.
WehadreceivedaproposalinMarch2016fromIASPregardingPainCampstobeheldin2017inassociation
with ISSP. The programme titled as “IASP-ISSP Multidisciplinary Evidence Based Pain Management
Programme”.Thisisa�ive-monthprogrammebeingheldatDelhi&MumbaifromMarch2017toJuly2017.The
delegatescanbeAnaesthesiologists,InternalMedicine,Neurologists,Neurosurgeons,Oncology,Orthopaedics,
Psychiatry, Psychology orRehabilitationMedicine. It has been a great year for ISSP in establishing good
communicationandjointlyundertakingmanytasks.Wethankourmembersforthesame.

WethankourPresidentforgivingusgreensignalinformingSpecialInterestGroupinvariouscategorieslike
InterventionalPainManagement,CancerPain,NeuropathicPain,CancerPain&Documentation&othersas
required.Thedetailsregardingmembers,scopeofeachSIGandotherthingswillbecommunicatedtoallISSP
members.
WecongratulateourdynamicChiefEditorofIndianJournalofPainforrestartingtheprintversionofIndian
JournalofPain,notonlythatwewillbegettingroyaltyforsame.
Wehaveonemore fabulouspieceof information from the IAPMcommittee.We requestoneof theadhoc
committeemembersDrPVijayanandtosharethesameinformation.
Secretariat
TheISSPsecretariathasbeenworkingtirelesslyforlast2yearsaftertakingchargeoftheresponsibility. The
agendainourmindistorevampthedatabaseofISSPmembersandISSPwebsite.Youwillbehappytoknowthat
weachievedagreatamountofsuccessinthisregard.Morethan45%ofISSPmember'sdatabasehasbeen
updatedwiththeiremails&mobilenumbers.Thewebsiteisonparwithinternationalstandards.Wearebeing
assistedbyagoodnumberofISSPmembersinalltheseefforts.
PleasegothroughthedetailsofvariousAwards,Nominations,andFellowshipsinourwebsite,allinformation
hasbeenuploadedonthewebsiteforthebene�itofmembers.Interestedmembersandmembersocietiescan

TheISSPCON2018isscheduledatNewDelhi.Don'tmissachance,hurryupandregistertodayforearlybird
registration!ITreturnsfor�inancialyears2013-14&2014-15havebeen�iled;thereweresomequeriesabout
TDS/TCS,whichhavebeenrepliedbyourTaxconsultantsatDelhi.WehavealsosubmittedforITreturnsof
�inancialyear2015-16.WereceivedrefundfortheITreturnsofthosetwoyears.Wethankourpastsecretariat
forassistingusinthisregard.
Thiswas closely followed by initiation ofworking on the ISSP project of preparing a set of guidelines in
associationwithotherspecialtieslikeOrthopedics,Psychology,Physiotherapy,DieticiansandRehabilitation.It
isin�inalstagesofimplementation,willbepublishedinIndianJournalofPainafterapprovalfromourChief
EditorDrKailashKothari.Asone-timehonorariumISSPhasreceivedRs3,50,000aseducationalgrant. The
“MobilityClinics”withguidelinesrecommendedbyISSParebeingimplementedphasewiseacrosscountry
fromDecember2016.
WecongratulateDrSushmaBhatnagarforbeingelectedtorepresentAsiaatIASPasGoverningCouncilMember
from2016to2022.
WehavegoodnewstosharewithyouregardingWFSAPainReliefCommittee.WFSAhasselectedourHon.
SecretaryDrMuralidharJoshitobepartofthecommitteeinviewofhiscontributiontoEPMProgramme&he
willrepresentAsiafor4yearsfrom2016.WecongratulatehimandTPSteam.
ComeJuly,ourPresidentkickstartedaworldwideprogrammeof'WorldPainAwarenessDay'tomarktheISSPth
FormationDayonJuly9 in1984.Itwasmind-bogglingeventwithsomanycity&statechapterschippingin
withinnovativeprogramme.Let'sworktowardsmakingitanannualeventandspreadtheknowledgeand
wisdom.

WehaveLICmutualbond fundofRs52,000purchasedon16/02/2000, it'scurrentnetworthvalue isRs
72,727.78.Atpresent,itisunderUnclaimedRedemption&Dividendforquitelongtime.Wedonothaveoriginal
papers. It'sbetter toencashthepolicy toavoid futuredif�iculties.WehadaseriesofdiscussionswithLIC
of�icials,theyexpressedthataletterfromsecretariatwithsignaturesofpresident,secretary&treasurerinthis
regardwill help in encashing the leftover amount to current account of ISSP (Syndicate Bank).We have
submittedrequireddocuments.
Atpresent,wehaveFD'scloseto66lakhsatSyndicateBank,Hyderabad.AllFD'sfromAhmedabadhavebeen
transferredtoHyderabad.WerequestAGBMtoauthorizethesecretariattotaketheseamountsintoaccountof
Syndicate Bank & henceforth the ISSP secretariat account should be transferred in total to next team of
secretariat.Thenextteamshouldnotopennewaccountkeepingpastaccountdormant.Thiswillavoidfuture
problems.
Wealsowouldliketosharethattherehasbeenagrowthof30%inourassetsinlastoneyear.Weappreciate
effortsofourcommittedtreasurerDrPVijayanand.
Future
TheIASPhasdeclaredYear2017asPainAfterSurgery.Variouschaptershaveinitiatedeventsinthisregard.We
willcomebacktoyouwithinformationinthisregardinthenextnewsletterofISSP.
Aspromised,wehavestartedonlineregistrationofnewmembersintheformofNetBanking.Pleasegetyour

Thiswasverydif�iculttaskasoursocietyhasverylimitedresources.
ImmediatelyaftercomingbacktoMumbai,Ireceivedthenewsfromourpublishers(Medknow)thatthepresent
sponsorinformedthattheyarestoppingtheirsupporttowardsjournal.Thismadethesituationworse.Istarted
exploringvariousoptions.Ispoketofewcompaniesandtheyshowedtheirwillingnesstocomeforwardand
workwithus.Aftertakingintovariousfactorsintoconsideration,myselfwithourdynamicpastpresidentDr.
R.P.GehdoometMr.JagroopSingh(VP),Mr.PramodfromIntasPharmaceuticals,Aquilladivisionintheendof
theFebruary.Afterabriefmeeting,weweregivenpositivenodbythem.Theypromisedustosupportinprinting
theIJPanddistributionofthejournaltoallourmembers.Wewerealsopromisedthatthesupportwouldbefor
theminimumperiodof3years.Theratewasnegotiatedand�inalizedatINR185percopy.Thisamountsto
approximatelyINR370000perissue.Asperournewagreement,afterdeductingprintingandotherexpenses
thebalancepro�itwillbesharedbetweenISSPandMedknowintheratioof70:30respectively(Increased
revenue–inthepastwedidagreedfor50:50sharing).
WealsoreceivedthependingbillsfromtheMedknowpublishersforapproximatelyINR1,14,000(pending

Inthenutshellovernext3yearsweexpectsocietytogetroyaltyfromthejournalintheexcessofINR10,00,000+
(Rs.TenLacs+)afterdeductingalltheexpenses,whichwillbehugeboostforour�inancialsituation.This
amountcanbeusedforvariousactivitiesoftheISSPinfuture.
TheIndianjournalofpainprintcopyispublishedregularlyintheyear2016.Wehadaverygood2016with3
issuespublishedontime.
ItakethisopportunitytothankIntas(Aquilladivision)Pharmatomakesurethateachmembergetshiscopy
deliveredathome.IalsothankMedknowpublicationtosupportourjournalbytheirstateofartonlinefacilities.
Ihavetriedtocorrect/updatetheaddressesofthemembersbeforeeachissuebeingdispatched.Inthisregard,
theeditor'sof�icehasreceivedamazingsupportfromoursecretaryDrMuralidharJoshi.Theco-ordinationand
sharingofvariousmattersofimportancebetweentwoof�icesisalsoveryef�icient.
Asfarasthejournalperformanceisconcerned,wedidreceivetotalof72articles,outofwhich43%were
accepted.Therejectionofmorethan50%isquitegoodsignforourjournal.Thejournalhadagoodmixof
varioussubjectscoveringdifferentaspectsofpainmanagement.IwouldrequestallmyfellowISSPmembersto

citybranch.ItwasajointventuresuccessfullyorganizedbyDepartmentofAnaesthesiology,CriticalCare
andPainMedicineofRUHSCollegeofMedicalSciencesandSMSMedicalCollege,Jaipur.
The theme of conference was “Education, Awareness and Practice”. The aimwas to educate pain
specialists, nursing personnel and physiotherapists about newer concepts and modalities of pain
management.Tospreadawarenessamongstlaypublicaboutpain,itseffectsandsideeffectsonsociety
whennotproperlymanaged.Thehighqualityinteractionandexchangeofviewsandexpertiseamongst
authoritiesonthesubject;establishedandnewertechniquestookacademicstoanewlevel.

PreConferenceworkshopswereorganisedinhalfdaysessionssothatparticipantscouldattendtwo
separateworkshops in pre and post lunch sessions. USG guidedworkshop had two parts one for
regionalblocksoflimbsandtrunk,anotherforpaininterventions.CadavericworkshopforBasicandndadvancedFluoroscopicguidedprocedures,bothwereorganizedatSMSMedicalCollegeon2 February
withanaimforupdatingandsharpeningtheskillsofthebuddingpainpractitioners.Alltheworkshops
werewellattendedandhighlyappreciated.

Itwasconductedinthreeparallelhallsondayoneandfourhallsonthesubsequentdays.Scienti�ic
programwasdesignedtocoverallaspectsofpainspectrumlikeacutepain,chronicpain,neuropathic
pain,cancerpain,advancedinterventionslikeneurostimulation,intrathecalpump,vertebroplastyand
endoscopicprocedures.
FreepaperswerepresentedasE-posters,eachpaperpresentedwasjudgedonaprescribedformatof
evaluationandmarks.Theywereprovidedtotheeminentjudgestomaintainuniformity.Thebestsix
paperswereselectedforplatformpresentationandawardsweregiven.

presentationsessionsonvariousadvancedpainproceduresandmanagementofcomplicatedpainful
conditionsweredemonstratedandwidelyappreciated.
Forthe�irsttimeanInteractivePainQuizwithvotingpadswasconductedinwhichanybodyinthe
audiencecouldparticipate,individualscoreswereshownonthescreenimmediately“TheKaunBanega
CrorepatiWay”.Morethan100delegatesparticipatedandenjoyedthemselveswiththetechnologyof

ThelifetimeachievementawardwasawardedtoDr.V.P.Kumraforhisexcellentservicesinthe�ieldof
PainManagement. Hon'ble healthminister announced to start post doctoral certi�icate course on
requestoftheISSPPresidentDrMishraandHon.SecretaryDrJoshi.
Twonew events “Clinicalmethodologyworkshop” and “Personality andBehavioural development
workshop”wereconductedforthe�irsttimeinISSPCONtoimproveclinicalaswellascommunicationth
skillofpainpractitionerwerethespecialsessions onseconddayofconferenceon4 February.They
werewellattendedandappreciated.
thOn 5 February, a basic pain management training program for nurses and physiotherapist was
conductedtoimprovetheirunderstandingofthesubjectastheyplayakeyroleinacuteandchronicpain
management.Around100nursesandphysiotherapistparticipatedintheprogramandgottrained.
Toimprovetheunderstandingofpain,anawarenessprogramwasorganizedforlaypersons,patients,thmedia,NGO'son5 February2017undertheleadershipofDrD.K.Baheti.

At ISSPCON2017 Jaipur,wehad around650 registereddelegates including10Overseas faculties,
Nationalfaculties,delegates,nursesandphysiotherapists.TheGBMwaswellattended.
Scienti�ic trade exhibitionwas put up onway to the dining area so that itwaswell attended and
delegateswerenotputtoinconvenience.Well,allworkandnoplaytakesitsowntoll.Asmallreasonably
priced”haatbazaar”wasputupfortheconvenienceofthosewhowishedtoattendtheconference
seriouslyandcarrysomespecialitiesofRajasthanbackhome.Eveningshadliveorchestra;organisers,
delegates,facultyandof�icebearersallparticipatedenthusiasticallytoshowtheirtalentandunwind
themselves.
Theprizedistributionofpaperpresentationandothercompetitionsweregivenduringthevaledictorythfunctionon5 Februaryfollowedby�lagloweringceremonyTheGBMwaswellattended.
IntheendIwouldliketosaythatwhentheopportunitywashandedovertousweneverthoughtthatwe
wouldbeable todosuchgreat.Butwith thehelpof theOrganizingCommitteeand theunder the
constantguidanceoftheGoverningCouncilwecouldresolvealltheobstaclesandhadagreatscienti�ic

ThisprogrammeisapartnershipbetweenIASP&ISSP.Theeventisspreadover5monthsstartingfrom
March2017 to July2017.Thiswillbring togetherexperts frommultiplespecialities toprovidean
interactive,participatory,educationalexperienceforhealthcareworkersinIndiainterestedinpain
management.The curriculumwill involve pain physiology, pathophysiology& practical concepts of assessment,
diagnosisandinterdisciplinarymanagementofacuteandchronicpainconditions.Smallgroupsessions
willcovertopicsrelevanttodaytodayclinicalpracticeandprovidelearningmaterialsandtoolstohelp
managepatientswithabroadspectrumofpainconditions.Thecourseswilltakeplaceoverseveral
monthswiththree2-dayinpersonsessionsattwositesDelhi&Mumbai.TheeventatDelhiisbeingco-

washeldinVelammalMedicalCollegeHospitalinMaduraionDec10and11,2016.ThisCMEprogram
wasorganizedbytheDeptofAnesthesiologyandPainMedicine,VelammalMedicalCollegeHospital,in
associationwiththeTamilNaduchapterofISSP.
The2dayCMEprogramconsistedofaseriesofdidacticlecturesinpainmedicine,ultrasoundbased
workshopsonvolunteersand�luoroscopebasedworkshopsoncadavers.ProminentspeakerslikeDr
GautamDas,DrGKKumar,DrSivaShanmugham,DrSenthilKumarRaju,DrJRajeshandDrVanmathy
Venkatapathydeliveredlecturesandguidedthedelegatesduringtheworkshops.About150delegates,
whichconsistedonpracticingconsultantsandpostgraduatestudents,participatedintheevent.Post
conferencefeedbackwaspositiveandencouraging.

thOn11 December,2016afterCMEgeneralbodymeetingwasheldwherethenameandthenew
designofthelogoforthenewlyregisteredWestBengalSocietyfortheStudyofPain,withthesame
aims and objectives as the State Chapter of the ISSP,was accepted by themembers of the GB
unanimously.
AftertheGeneralBodymeeting,electionwasconductedbyDrAmitavaRudra,DrManjusreeRayand
DrAmnaGoswamiwhowereappointedastheboardofElectionCommissionersbythemembersin
theGBMunanimously afterbeingproposedby the StatePresidentDr SMBasu.The following

BeforewestartSSPMwouldliketocongratulatethethreenewPainfellowsatthreecentresinMumbai
foroneyearwhichisrecognisedbyMUHS,Maharashtra'shealthuniversity.SSPM,Societyforstudyof
Pain,Mumbaihasbeenvery active in termsof its academic activities forPain education andPain
awareness.thWehadourregularonceintwo-monthmeetingofthisyearwhichstartedon14 JanuaryatLilavati
hospitalwith interesting topicofRehabilitationmedicine inPainmanagement. Itwas followedby
interestingcasediscussiononthesameissue.
thSecondmeetingwasheldon18 MarchwithstressonPreventionofKneepainandsportsrelatedinjury.
TheturnofeventsindicatethatPainmedicinetopicsareslowlymaturingtonotonlytheorydiscussion
ofpathologybuttopreventionandrehabilitationtocompletethePainmanagementtreatment.
ThenextmeetingisplannedinJune.
SSPMaimstoachieveitsobjectivestospreadPaineducationandawareness.SSPMhasrestartedPain
awarenessforFamilyphysiciansbyconductingPaincoursesatvariousinstitutesofMumbai.Fortheth
same,twoprogramswereconducted.FirstoneoftheserieswasatHolyfamilyhospitalon29 January.It
wasaprogramof4hourswith6topicstocoverbasicsofPainmanagementforaFamilyphysicianorany
otherdoctorwhomanagespainintheirclinicorhospital.Ideawastohelpthemunderstandnewer
conceptofpain,easywaystoassesspain,simplermedicaltreatmentalgorithmwithtroubleshooting.
Thiswasfollowedbycommoncasescenariodiscussionandexamandfeedbacktoassesstheef�icacyof
thecourse.
thSecondcourseofthelinewasconductedon19 FebruaryatPrincealykhanhospital.Nextinthelineis
plannedatWockhardthospitalinJune.Weintendtodo6programsbythisyearendandhopetotarget
around600-800familydoctors,residentsandconsultants.
TherearesimilarcoursesbeingconductedinotherpartsofIndia.IwouldrequesttoISSPtohavea
consolidatedPaincoursesyllabusforFamilyphysiciansandnursesaswellsothatwecanfreelyconduct
suchcoursesalloverIndia.Wecanhavethecoursemateriali.e.presentationsavailableontheISSP
websitewhichcanbeoffreetouseforanyone.ThiscouldbeupdatedbyIAPM.
SSPMisalmostthroughwithpublicationofitsHandbookofPainforDoctors.Itshouldbeinmarketfor
saleinJuly2017.IwouldrequestISSPmemberstospreadawordaboutittootherdoctorsaswellto
makeuseoftheHandbookwhichwouldbeveryhelpfulforgeneraldoctorsinmanagingpain.Iwould
alsorequestISSPtohaveabooklikeAPI,thiswouldonlyhelpISSPandincreasetheacademicawareness
ofsocietywithmonetarybene�itstothesocietyratherthanindividuals.Hopetohavemoreandmore
positiveactivitiesinSSPMandISSP.
