Dear Parents and Carers,

OFSTED: As you are aware, inspectors were in school this week. We will be able to share the report with you when it is available in approximately 3 weeks. Thank you to everyone who filled in a parent view survey.

NSPCC: Representatives from the children’s charity will be coming in next Tuesday to give a whole school assembly on online safety as part of their ‘Speak Out and Stay Safe’ campaign. During Children’s Mental Health Week, they will be returning to carry out some workshops with the Year 5&6 children on Tuesday 4th Feb. There will also be a workshop for parents that day, a letter will be sent out next week with more details.

School Dinners: The Governors have reviewed the cost of school meals, having kept them at the same level for a number of years. They have reluctantly decided that we need to make a small increase in the cost to £2.30, effective after half-term.

Outdoor Clothing: We would be very grateful for any donations of outgrown coats and wellies for the children to wear for outside learning if they forget to bring their own.

Sport: Very well done to the Wynstream Boccia team, otherwise known as Riley, Harley and Cohen, who came 3rd in the county this week after winning the Exeter round of the competition last Friday. We also took two teams from Y5&6 to the U11 Sitting Volleyball championships, where they did a great job considering it’s a new sport for them.

Headteacher’s Award: Congratulations to Mason Bennett, Ruby Coles, Kyesha Small-Reed, Leon Sandercock-Hunter, Kyah Croft, Lily Croft, Zac Burnham, Connie Pawley, Dainton Stevens, Adriana Simakou, Maisie Densham, Lucia Monks, Halema Darmaan, Harry Dymond and Tiana Taylor who all get certificates this week.

Executive Headteacher’s Update.

In 2015 Montgomery, Wynstream and Chestnut Nursery School joined together to create a federation; three schools with one group of governors, who oversee the budgets and work of each school with one executive headteacher.

As the executive headteacher, I manage the finances, personnel and buildings as well as oversee the work of the headteachers at each school. Through my

cross-federation work, the headteachers are able to focus on the teaching and learning at each school, managing the learning experiences and the professional development of their staff.

Each year the headteachers write and deliver an improvement plan for their school, this supports the school to evolve and meet the changing needs of the pupils. Through working in partnership across the federation schools, this school improvement and professional development of staff is proving effective.

In September there was a significant shift in the expectations of the organisation and delivery of the curriculum in primary schools. The school improvement plans for both Wynstream and Montgomery centre on the evolution of their curriculum and improving teachers’ understanding of how children learn. This is a major focus for us this year and I am working with Mrs Brown and Mr Edge to evolve what we teach and when we teach it, alongside developing teachers’ leadership skills in leading curriculum subjects.

Chestnut Nursery’s curriculum and the expectations have not changed and their improvement plan focuses on developing pupil’s language skills.

It was a pleasure to meet parents last term at Christmas plays, Christmas dinners, concerts and at the choir competition in Torquay. I will be at schools for ‘surgery’ times over the next few weeks for parents to come along and meet me and discuss any issues you have. These will be on an informal basis, please feel free to come and chat, you don’t need an appointment. You don’t have to have an issue to attend, you can just come for coffee and to say hello. I look forward to seeing you there.

Wynstream Tuesday 28th January in the main atrium entrance, 8.20 – 9.30am

Montgomery Wednesday 29th January in the coffee shop, 8.30 - 9.30am

Chestnut Wednesday 5th February in the conference room, 8.30 – 9.30am
