NOTICE: The Myrtle Creek Police Department will be using the 50 Yard Range on December 3rd,
between 9am & 2pm for training and qualifying.
For your information, the Board of Directors have approved the Club joining and having annual
membership, over a period of years, to the following organizations; as these provide a valuable
Service to our Membership and our Club:
1. The National Rifle Association of America. Provides grants through the NRA Foundation, has
Training for our Range Safety Officers by our Chief Range Safety Officer, provides the Club’s
Liability Insurance coverage, and professional educational facilities and materials.
2. The Oregon State Shooting Association. This is the NRA Affiliated State Association for
Oregon which are on the Board that determines and approves the grants for both the NRA
Foundation and the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife.
3. The Civilian Marksmanship Program. This program is under the authority of the laws of the
United States of America. We joined with over 5000 Clubs and Organizations that provide
their members with the opportunity to purchase guns, ammo as it is available. Their website
is www.civilianmarkshipprogram/e-store.com, where you can look at the items for sale.
4. The Oregon State Sheriff’s Association. The Board voted on November 8th to join the Oregon
State Sheriff’s Association in support of Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, as it also
provides grants to Douglas County such as Protective Gear for the Tactical Medical Response
Team which we will need to pursue on behalf of Douglas County Fire District No. 2.
While the Board of Directors is asked for donations for many worthwhile organizations, the
Board has taken the firm position of donating only to those organizations that provide a benefit
to the Membership and Service to the Club.
Don’t forget our Raffle of the Sig 9MM Pistol that will be drawn on February 14th at 2PM, at the
Roseburg Gun & Knife Show. We still have tickets available for this beautiful Concealed Carry
Gun. The drawing for the winning ticket will be drawn at 2pm on Sunday February 14th, 2016.
We still have 116 tickets at $10 to sell for the Henry “Golden Boy” 22LR embossed with the NRA
Emblem. We expect that we will sell these during the February 14th Roseburg Gun Show and
during the Sportman’s Show on February 21st. This means the drawing will be held at our Club
Membership meeting on March 13th, also when Daylight Savings returns. We will sell tickets at
the Membership Meeting, then close the drawing, and draw the winning tickets on March 13th
@ 2pm.

__________________________________________________________________________________________
Fellow members of the South Umpqua Rod and Gun Club, may I take a moment of your time please?
I’ll start with the negative first. Who among us is the rare person who has not received a traffic citation we truly believed we did not
deserve? Who, also, is the rare person who has not had a uniformed person raise their voice when we believed it was not necessary? I
would guess that just about everyone has had, at least, one experience, of a negative nature, with law enforcement. The sad part is we,
as individuals, remember these most vividly and refer to these most commonly. Sometimes it almost seems as though it is US against
THEM! I would suggest that we, as reasonable people, should look at both sides of the coin though.
Bad things happen, and they seem to be happening at a greater frequency than ever before. At least that is the way the Main Stream
Media seems to portray the story. Recently a very tragic event occurred at the UCC Campus. We cannot undue that incident, it did occur!
We can, however, be thankful that we had a professional and dedicated group of law enforcement officers, who under these trying
circumstances, did an outstanding job and responded as well as any person could have expected. In the wake of this tragedy, a very high
ranking political figure, the President of the United States, declared he would make this a “POLITICAL EVENT”. Thank the goodness of our
Sheriff, and other circumstances, that this never happened.
We, as members, belong to the SURGC (South Umpqua Rod & Gun Club) because we have chosen to belong. We are firearms owners for
whatever reason we choose, whether to put meat on the table, protect ourselves from bad people, or just because we like to put holes in
paper from a distance. Whatever the reason, we decide. In spite of our personal interactions with specific individuals, in uniform, we
should be grateful we have support from our local sheriff. All too often, the people who serve, in uniform, also get the feeling that it is US
against THEM, as well. Sadly, that they are our neighbors and sometimes even our friends, as long as they are not in uniform, but become
something else once the ‘dress’ is applied. And yes, I speak of this from personal knowledge, having served elsewhere for some 21 years.
Isn’t it time we considered changing that?
Recently, the Club has made the decision to join, as Official Sponsors, the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association. May I suggest, and it is only
a suggestion, that we, as Club Members, consider the possibility of individual membership? And what would we expect in return for, for
a minimum $30.00 (TAX DEDUCTIBLE) Annual Membership? Certainly it would not prevent ANY negative interactions, and it would not
stop all traffic citation issuance, but it would be sending a ‘smiley face’ to our Sheriff and his staff, that may show that we ARE all in this
together, and we do understand that not all things are always understood. Perhaps a ‘smiley face’ would be contagious and we could
find a better way of finding understanding. To that end, I propose the following, and I will gladly take the role of recruiter, to achieve a
goal;
Please, as members, take the small amount of time necessary, to go to the website http://oregonsheriffs.org/ and look, for yourself, at
the organization and what it represents, feel free to check the ways the organization is combating unconstitutional laws arrived at by the
State Legislature, look at the programs, and most importantly, understand that there is much more happening than the average person,
currently, knows. If you, as I did, feel comfortable with the organization, then join as a member yourself! You will receive a membership
card, a decal for your window, and a quarterly newsletter, nothing more, unless you include peace of mind and the idea you are sending
a ‘smiley face’.
Remember, when bad things happen, we don’t call the City Councilor’s house, or the State Legislator’s number, or the President’s phone,
we call the local law enforcement, and we fully expect, and almost always receive, the highest, most professional and caring response. It
is truly sad that these dedicated persons, who take this responsibility on voluntarily, are the lowest paid of all those mentioned above
(unless you live in a small town with volunteer city government, like Yoncalla). Further, if you do feel good about joining, spread the
word among family and friends, and recruit even more members. I would not ask this if I weren’t a true believer in trying to make things
better.

COMING NEXT MONTH: A MENU FROM KEN’S SIDEWALK CAFÉ IN CANYONVILLE;
THAT WILL OFFER A BREAKFAST MENU THAT WILL BE SERVED AT KEN’S SIDEWALK
CAFÉ, DURING THE IN-COMING NEW YEAR!!!
If you have not done so, please donate to: Douglas County Fire District No. 2, send the
Donation to the Club at SURGC, P.O. Box 639, Canyonville, OR 97417. We will forward
these funds which will provide Protective Gear for the Tactical Medical Response
Team, so that they can safely enter an incident area along with Law Enforcement, and
treat and remove any injured victims or members of Law Enforcement. There are 18
members on the Team, with 5 members having gear and 13 members still needing the
Protective Gear.
This Team will cover all of Douglas County, and therefore the need to have a total of
18 Members. These members will have their gear with them 24/7 and will be able to
provide an immediate response to an incident, either on or off Duty.
Again, the Team members are: The Deputy Chief for Fire District No. 2, the ER Doctor
from Mercy Hospital, and 16 Paramedics. The Douglas County Fire District lacks the
funds to provide this gear as it costs $2,645 for each member.
The total cost is $34,385, so community support is desperately needed. Thank you to
all the shooters at the Steel Challenge on Saturday, November 28th, for their
generous $110.00 donation toward the purchase of Protective Gear for the members
of the Douglas County Tactical Medical Response Team.
I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and still have some leftover
turkey for sandwiches, to go with other things, like pie. Must have gained 5 pounds.
