Mother Goose—thank you to those people who have been attending the Mother Goose program on Friday afternoons. We have a number of different events coming up on Fridays, including the Book Fair and Dress Up Day next Friday. With this in mind we have decided that this Friday, 17th August will be the final Mother Goose Session for this term. In No-vember, we will commence our ‘Step into Prep’ program, and this pro-gram will incorporate some of the activities from Mother Goose. More details regarding the ‘Step into Prep’ program will be in following news-letters.
This year we are planning a number of activi-ties during Book Week. Each day we will have activities based on a selected shortlisted book and during the week we will read another of the shortlisted books to the children in the form of a serial. On Friday, 24th August, we will have a Book Fair, where families will be able to purchase books for their children. Al-so on Friday 24th August we will have a Book Week Dress Up Day /Footy Colours Day. On this day we will also have a special lunch.
Hats On - A reminder that from Monday September 3, it is school policy
that broad brim or bucket hats are worn outside. We will remind all stu-
dents that it is time to have hats on again.

Attendance—as per Department of Education Guidelines, from the beginning of this term all Victorian govern-
ment schools must contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student ab-
sence. This requirement supports student safety and wellbeing. Schools need to know when and why a child is
absent, and parents/carers need to know if their child is not at school. Prompt communication also promotes dai-
ly school attendance. We will communicate via SMS, where permission has been granted.
Kind Regards

Students of the Week
F—1: Congratulations Sam for working so hard and writing a procedural text on ‘How to Make Pancakes’.
Grade 2-4 : Our student of the week is Pheonix for focussing on her reading.
From Mr Williamson’s Class—The reading strategies we are focusing on for this week are rereading, confirming
and cross checking. In writing the students will be finishing their portfolio work for procedural writing and they
will begin persuasive writing later in the week. The spelling focus this week is the graph ‘e’ making the sound ‘e’
as in bed.
Students have done a fantastic job learning their times tables and are confident with recalling 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
This week students will begin to learn about two dimensional and three dimensional shapes.
Students have been hard at work practising for the school concert and the skipping demonstration.
Reminders
School camp medical form and itinerary went home last week and is due back by Wednesday 15th August.
Skipping permission form is due back on Friday 17th August.
From Mrs Manitta’s Class: The students had another enjoyable week. In Writing, we wrote and followed a pro-
cedural text on ‘How to Make Pancakes’. The students used an action verb at the beginning of their steps. (Pour,
mix, stir). They watched and assisted Deb making the pancakes. Of course all students enjoyed the end result.
Deb’s Delicious Pancakes
Ingredients:
1 cup of self-raising flour
1 cup of buttermilk (the secret ingredient)
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp melted butter
Maple syrup
For Reading and Phonics, we focused on the blend sl. (slip, slime). We of course had to make fluffy slime to
demonstrate the sl blend!
Fluffy Slime
Ingredients:
PVA glue
Shaving cream (the foam kind, not the gel or cream kind)
Borax solution (1 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon borax, mixed until clear)
Eye contact solution (optional but recom-mended)
Food colouring (optional)
Essential oils (optional)
Over the next few weeks we will be looking at homophones - words that are pronounced the same but have
different meanings. (their, there) (to, two, too)
Students continue to read every day and focus on their individual reading goal. Each day we practise our spelling
words for 15mins with a spelling test at the end of each week.
Method:
Pour one cup of flour, one cup of buttermilk, 1 tablespoon of sugar
and 1 tablespoon of melted butter into a bowl
Stir ingredients
Heat a large non-stick frying pan
Pour and cook 2 pancakes for 3-4 mins until bubble appear on the
Method:
Squeeze one bottle of white glue into a medium bowl
Stir in ½ cup to 1 cup of shaving foam, depending on how
fluffy you want your slime to be
Add food colouring to colour desired and stir
Mix in a few squrts of eye contact solution (this makes it less
sticky
Hesket students are respectful. Hesket students are responsible. Hesket students achieve their best
In Numeracy, students focused on 3D shapes and locating them in their environment.
Cylinder – batteries
Pyramid – pyramids in Egypt
Sphere – ball
Cone – traffic cone
Rectangular prism – tissue box
Cube – dice
The students explored and classified 3D shapes by their features. (curved surfaces, faces, edges, corners). They drew a pic-
ture using a number of cubes, cones, spheres and cylinders.
For Integrated Studies, students were given a cut and paste activity and sorted their rubbish items into the correct bin.
(rubbish, compost, green, recycle)p
Musical Notes/Class reminders
Thank you Jack for providing the oranges for our fruit bowl. There are many students who don’t have fruit or forget. Fruit is
important for our health and it also gives our brains a boost for the next lesson!
Please assist your children with the learning of their spelling words and listening to your child read every night. Congratula-
tions to those that write in the reading log every night.
Once you have your items and clothing for the musical, please place this in a bag
with your child’s name in preparation for dress rehearsals.
