T I P S F O RsuccessOUR PLANT DOCTORS ARE AVAILABLE

DURING STORE HOURS, 7 DAYS A WEEK. FOR ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS, IT HELPS TO BRING IN A SAMPLE.

FLOWER GARDENSStart your annual bulbs inside to get a head start on the season. Begonias, dahlias, cannas, and gladiolas can all be happy in a bright spot in the home as they begin growing. Starting them early inside will ensure earlier flowering once they make it outside.

PERENNIALSLift and divide crowded perennials late this month if new growth is evident. When dividing, make sure to dig up as much of the existing root system as possible. Use a sharp, sterile tool for cutting, and replant divisions using soil amendments like Nature's Yield Compost in the new locations.

Cut back old flower stocks and foliage to allow for new growth. This is especially important for ornamental grasses.

VEGGIE GARDENSPlant spinach, peas, Swiss chard, radishes, turnips, parsnips, carrots, kale, lettuce, leeks, rutabaga, onion seeds and sets, bare root strawberries, asparagus, and potatoes directly into the garden if soil temperature is at least 40 degrees.

LAWNSIf you had disease problems in the lawn last year, apply, Ferti-lome F-stop when grass greens up as a preventative measure.

Overseeding a thin lawn can also begin as temperatures warm up this month. Rake areas to be seeded to expose the soil. Use good quality grass seed, and keep seeded areas moist until germination occurs.

TREES & SHRUBSPrune out raspberry canes that produced fruit last year (they will have papery-gray bark and traces of where the fruit was attached). Leave canes that didn't fruit for this year's crop.

Make sure to look out for these three things when pruning: dead branches, broken branches, and branches that cross or rub on others.

For new trees and shrubs, very little pruning is needed in the first two years. Your plants need to establish a good root system, and the more top growth, the more the plant can produce its own food to grow.

Suffocate overwintering insects like aphids, spider mites, and scale on trees and shrubs by spraying Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil.

INDOOR PLANTSAs days grow longer, houseplants will resume active growth and can benefit from applications of fertilizer like Jack's Classic Houseplant Special. Now is also a great time to repot them into the next size larger pot if they've outgrown their container.

BIRDSGet your birdhouses cleaned out and ready for the spring arrival of many different species of birds. Birds are very particular about the size of the entry hole, so be sure to have the right-sized entry hole for the birds you want to attract.

MISCELLANEOUSWant to bring a pop of spring color into the home? Bring some smaller twigs from crabapple, cherry, forsythia, or pussy willow inside, and put them in a vase of water for indoor spring blooms.

meet NEENA RAQUEL

Neena is our Hard Goods Assistant Manager. She's responsible for choosing and buying all of the containers, mulches, and soils at Echter's. On any given day, she may be searching through vendor catalogs to pick out and order new products, creating displays, and helping customers find exactly what they need. Neena also travels to trade shows to check out the newest products coming onto the market for gardeners. We value her enthusiasm, energy, and sunny disposition.

Before joining Echter's, Neena lived in Breckenridge, and is a licensed bartender. In the spring of 2017, she decided to indulge her lifelong love of plants by joining us here at Echter's. She moved into her current position in October.

When she's not at work, she loves to spend time in her own garden. She's passionate about sustainable living, and last year she began teaching a composting class at Echter's. Her major passions outside of gardening include travel, snowboarding, and yoga.
