Issue 28 – Friday 4th September 2020

DIARY DATES REMOTE LEARNING UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Friday 18.9.2020 Last Day of Term 3 School finishes 1 hour early.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Value of the Fortnight

We have now completed five weeks of our Victorian State of Disaster. We have systematically driven the COVID-19 daily infection rate down. I am hopeful that daily infection numbers will be much lower by the end of the disaster period which will conclude on Sunday, 13th September. My prediction is that the last week of Term 3 (14th-18th September) will be a continuation of our remote learning phase. An announcement will be made on this coming Sunday, 6th September about the plans and road map for Term 4.

We must continue to be vigilant in our safety measures to ensure that we are not far away from coming out of the second COVID-19 spike.

I would like to thank everyone for their continuing cooperation and support in these difficult times.

John Mooney Principal

Kindness Awards

We will be studying the value, Determination, for the next fortnight. Determination is about using your will-power and focusing all your energy on a task until it is done. It is usually an important task that will make a big difference to you if you succeed. Right now we should all be determined to get the numbers of people being infected with COVID-19 down. Determined people do not pull out just because things are getting difficult.

It is a bit like when we take antibiotics for a bacterial infection and decide to stop taking them because we are starting to feel better, even though we still have some tablets left in the pack. In such cases, we usually get the infection back and need to purchase another prescription of even stronger antibiotics!

We need to be working towards getting the number of infected COVID-19 people down to zero so that we can resume our normal lives as soon as possible. Let’s all be determined to see this out by continuing to wear our masks, staying 1.5 metres apart and continually wash or sanitise our hands.

Dianne Wright Principal—Middle School

This weeks kindness awards go to: Masha Balafooriya and Leanne Gal for helping to tidy up some of the classrooms in the Junior School. Lance Wright for taking an injured possum to the vet. The lovely people in MSC, Ms Corlett, Chrissie M, Peta Murphy and several other MSC parents who made PJ’s birthday so special this week. Chrissie and Peta baked a cake and all the mothers and children sang Happy Birthday to PJ during their WebEx session.

Meet the staff of Emerson School

Ms Jocelyn Cowley — SSL Teacher

I have worked at Emerson for 11 years. I first began at Emerson as a student teacher with Mrs Searle and loved being at the school. The following year, I started in the Middle School along with Miss Liddy and Miss Harding as a Graduate Teacher. The classroom I teach in now was the first room I taught in all those years ago. I have since taught in Junior School and now teach VCAL in the Senior School. On the weekends, I like to walk my dog along the beach near my house and photograph nature. I also enjoy practicing my singing in the back room as I have been told I am very loud. I also love using my Cricut machine and making labels and gifts for my students.

1. What is your favourite thing about working at Emerson School? My favourite thing about working at Emerson School is when I see a student’s face light up because they have learnt something they have been working hard towards. 2. What is your favourite sporting team? I barrack for any team that is winning. 3. What is your favourite food? My favourite food is chocolate brownies but during stage 4 restrictions I have enjoyed Darrell Lea Chocolate Raspberry Bullets.

4. Do you have a pet and if so, what animal and their name? I did have a pet Golden Retriever named Maja who has passed away recently but she was a big part of SSL and Dunlop House. She loved getting pats from the Juniors at lunchtime and chasing the ball around the back oval. She loved sitting on students feet under the table in the classroom and taking regular naps on her pink blanket. Her fluffy butt, floppy tongue and happy smile made everyone around her feel warm and fuzzy. Her golden bundles of hair that gather like tumbleweeds will be missed.
