End of Semester Reports
On Friday 6th July year 7—10 students will be issued with their end of semester one
report The report aims to give parents and students feedback on student learning and
performance. I recommend that parents take the time to go thorough the report
with their child, discuss the contents and set goals for semester two. Should you have
any questions regarding your child’s report please contact the subject teacher. Parents
and staff working together is an essential component to the success of the students.
Uniform expectations
During the winter months, students have a number of uniform options to stay warm
including long pants (boys and girls), jumper, cardigan, navy blue or maroon school
scarf and jacket. On sport days, students have the option of wearing CHS shorts or
track pants. In order to maintain the high standard of uniform expected by our school
community, students are not to be wearing clothing items that are not included as our
uniform. Maintaining a high standard of uniform is essential in ensuring that
Crestwood HS students reflect the values of respect, responsibility and
connectedness. This, in turn, will provide opportunities in the community for our
students in the future.
I would also like to remind parents that students are to be wearing strong, black
leather upper school shoes. The thin soft leather look shoes do not satisfy WHS
requirements and are not appropriate for school.
The uniform shop is open on Wednesday mornings from 7:30am—10:45am.
Footloose Rebooted
This week I have the pleasure of watching our talented
students performing on stage and in the band in our
production of Footloose Rebooted. The show was equally
supported by our talented students running the technical
operations of the show. Our students have been rehearsing
for months after school, on weekends and during school holidays under the direction
of Miss Stephanie Merriman and Mr Joel Palmer. The commitment of these students
is truly commendable.
I would also like to acknowledge the time and commitment of Mr Chris Lloyd (sound
and lighting), Miss Karla Olmos (wardrobe), Mr Quentin Bamford and Mr Matt
Campbell (Music), Mrs Donna Whale (choreography and costumes) and Mr Tim
Henderson (stage management).
Many thanks to all staff, students and parents who have contributed to the success of
the production. It is certainly a huge team effort that brings our school community
together. ……………..continued over page

This production is dedicated to the memory of Mr Steve White who lost his battle
with MND earlier in the year. Mr White was pivotal in establishing the annual school
production. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to MND Australia.
Happy and Safe Holiday
School holidays will commence on Monday 9 July. Staff will return on Monday 23rd July for our school develop-
ment day and students return on Tuesday 24th July. I wish all staff and students a safe and restful holiday.
Therese Hourigan.
From The Principal cont…
Congratulations to all cast, crew and staff who are involved in the musical Footloose. It is fabulous to see the
dancing, singing and acting, and also the set, props and costumes for the show. Again, Crestwood has excelled with
this musical, singing and dancing extravaganza.
It is always pleasing to see Crestwood students resplendent in the uniform. The cold weather can afford the
opportunity to wear the classy long trousers/slacks, tie, scarf, tracksuit pants (for sport) and cap. Students are even
wearing the formal blazer. It shows just how much students embrace the school spirit and are proud to be part of
this amazing school. For those students who represent the school at zone and regional levels, unfortunately, the
zone and regional gear is not part of the uniform and should not be worn to school. Remember hoodies and
beanies are banned and will be confiscated for the day.
Students who drive are reminded of the school rules around driving cars to and from school. If students drive a
vehicle they must complete the process of obtaining permission. Please see Mr Groth or Ms Wright to obtain the
permission forms. Students must not have passengers unless the passengers have permission from parents to be in
the car. It is also timely to be reminded of School Zone Offences and the fines that apply. The School zone
offences are listed on page 13 of this newsletter with the fines and demerit points. For P platers, all offences result
in loss of licence.
The winter holidays are approaching. It is a time for seniors to study hard for trials and end of course
examinations, and for some, to catch-up on essential learning. Make sure you keep safe and warm, and ‘think be-
fore you act’ so you can return on Tuesday 24 July happy, healthy and eager to learn.

Relay for Life
On Tuesday 26th June, I attended the Cancer Council thank you function for
Hills Relay for Life. Each of the teams registered was presented with a
certificate which had a photo of our sun safe students enjoying the day.
As a relay the combined team effort was over $327,000 of which we
contributed $27,000 and as a result we were awarded the most valuable team,
an accolade we have repeated for the last 3 years. Kate Hawkins talked
about the wonderful spirit of our team and the enormous difference we are
making to the lives of those touched by cancer. Almost 30% more people
survive their diagnosis than did 20 years ago.
A big thank you to everyone
who played a part in such a
wonderful achievement.

Public Speaking and Debating Success
Both the Year 9 and Year 10 debating teams won their round 3 debates on Thursday 21st June which
means that one of them will be the zone champions. We just need to do a playoff to decide which one so
that’s a great result.
Secondly, Charlee Sutherland was one of 6 students chosen
to progress to the Plain English Public Speaking State Final
after her impressive performance on Friday 22nd June at
the State Semi Finals. There were 22 speakers left from a
range of educational settings and it was a very tough semi
that Charlee was part of.
The other finalists are from Sydney Girls, Sydney Boys,
Hornsby Girls, Pymble Ladies College and The Kings School
so as you can see, she is up against some tough competition,
but as always represents our non-selective, non-private,
co-educational school with style.
HSC Drama workshop
Our HSC drama students enjoyed
a workshop and performance of
their prescribed text, The
Removalists. Here they are with
their NIDA tutor, Julia, who
directed them in a series of scenes
from the Australian classic. This is
just one of many enriching
experiences available to our
Drama students!

2018 MS Readathon
This year is the 40th year for the MS Readathon, some parents may even remember taking part when
they were in Primary School. The MS Readathon inspires magical reading adventures and excites even
the most reluctant reader.
We’ve never found a teacher or parent who doesn’t want to inspire more reading, but we know in
today’s digital world it can be tough! This is why our exciting new MS Readathon website is designed to
enrich reading without an exhausting effort from you.
The MS Readathon works in the classroom or as a challenge at home!
Funds raised from the MS Readathon will help children attend our special MS Family Camps. These
camps help families living with multiple sclerosis to spend quality time together, learn more about
multiple sclerosis and bond with others who are sharing their journey. MS Family Camps are in huge
demand, and to make sure everyone who needs them can go, your help is urgently needed!
The MS Readathon is such a wonderful way for kids to help other kids, all while falling in love with the
wonder and magic of reading.
Reading commences in August. Students can
register as an individual online, or type in
Crestwood High School to join the
Crestwood class. This year payments are
online via credit card.

Gardner Scot, Changing Gear
Merrick Hilton’s done a runner.
His folks think he is studying, but the real world has been calling for years and he can’t
ignore it any longer. A postie bike, a bedroll and a big sky – that’s all he needs.
But there’s no telling how he’ll handle the rough stuff, let alone roadkill, stolen oranges
and unexpectedly romance. And in the real world nothing goes entirely as planned.
Thankfully, Victor – the old bloke he meets on the road – knows a thing or two about
broken bike chains. And broken hearts.
The vivid story of a teenage boy and the road trip that clears his head and his heart.
Mcpherson Sue, Brontide
Brontide is a coming-of-age story about four boys – Rob, Pen, Benny Boy and Jack – and
their lot in life. Recounted through storytelling sessions at their school over a period of
five days, these boys chronicle their lives. They are at times demanding, occasionally rude,
always funny and unexpectedly profound. The boys like to challenge themselves and the
rules, and soon realise that not everything goes to plan.
Moloney James, The Love That I Have
Margot Baumann has left school to take up her sister’s job in the mailroom of a large
prison. But this is Germany in 1944, and the prison is Sachsenhausen concentration camp
near Berlin.
Margot is shielded from the camp’s brutality as she has no contact with prisoners. But
she does handle their mail and, when given a cigarette lighter and told to burn letters,
she is horrified. This is especially painful since her brother was taken prisoner at
Stalingrad and her family have had no letters from him.
So, Margot steals a few letters, intending to send them in secret, only to find herself drawn to their heart-rending
words of hope, of despair, and of love.

Year 10 Industrial Technology Engineering
Year 10 Industrial Technology Engineering students continued to expand on the construction of their
Bridge Challenge task which was tested in week 5, term 1. The design and construction of the truss type
bridge was used to find the relative strength and there were some very interesting designs by Selena
Cardillo which was able to dissipate 119 kilograms before destruction and the runner up was able to
contain a load of 66.5 kilograms.
by Senena Cardillo by Alan Zhang by Ryan Scott
This engineering group of students are presently working on their “Wind Up Torch” and their focus area
is Electronics. Most of them are about to finish this task and will be assessed in term 3.
The year 9 Industrial Technology Engineering students started with a PET Bottle Racer class challenge
which was a Term 1 project and proved to be quite interesting. The student that achieved the best
result was Jai Higgins with a distance of 14.28 metres and the runner up was Christopher Ceccato with a
distance of 8.66 metres.
As the photos demonstrate some students are setting their vehicles for testing.
The Year 9 Industrial Technology Engineering students are now working on their Mouse Trap Vehicle as
a class challenge which is anticipated to be tested in week 2 of term 3.
The Support students from STAS5 had been working on their Robotic Arm design and after lots of ups
and downs, they have been able to successfully complete the task this week. As it is evident from the
pictures that they are really proud of their achievement.

Activate Inclusion Sports Day—Netball Central Homebush
Page 14
The Activate Inclusion program is an initiative focused on providing sporting pathways for students aged 5 to
18 years with a physical, intellectual or sensory disability.
The program offered students adaption knowledge and adaptive equipment to experience a variety of sports in
a fun and inclusive environment.
Crestwood High students that attended had a fun day out and experienced different ways to play a variety of
popular sports.
We hope to further develop this new initiative and have various sporting programs come to school and run
programs during sport/PE lessons.

EVET COURSES TIMELINE & APPLYING FOR COURSES – UNDERSTANDING
THE PROCESS FOR YEARS 10 & 11
Crestwood High School accesses external courses as part of the course offers for Years 11 & 12. Application
procedures for courses can be a little confusing due to the many providers involved and the different application
dates and procedures. A timeline and procedures flowchart is provided below.
Important Note
It is important that parents understand that without the completed paperwork, which includes all boxes ticked,
signatures and information provided the paperwork can not be submitted. The earlier the paperwork is submitted
before the due date the easier it is for the Careers Adviser to rectify any problems with the paperwork prior to
submission.
Below is an outline of the process:
COURSE APPLICATION PAPER TRAIL
ONE: Students collect course information and application forms
Student collect paperwork from Mrs Fisher (Library). Paperwork includes information sheet and application forms. Paperwork can be collected from 29
th June 2018
TWO: Information Sessions
Some courses require an information session. These information sessions are provided by the organisation that is running the course for example TAFE or Westmead/Blacktown Hospitals. For some organisations to collect the paperwork you must attend the information session.
THREE: Submission of forms – Due between Term 3: Wk 3 – 10 Final date still to be confirmed
All students must complete all aspects of the application forms. This includes the Unique Student Identifier (USI), including the section that indicates what form of ID the student used and providing a copy of proof of the creation of the USI. Without this information the student can not be placed on the USI registry and therefore can not be accepted into the course. Do not forget to sign all aspects of the form including the photography page. Please Note those accepted late can not be guaranteed to be up loaded in time.
FOUR: Offers / Acceptance / withdrawal – Offers: Term 4: Wk 6 All offers will be made by Term 4 Week 6 if the same timeline is followed from last year. All students must accept or withdraw their offer. Once the offer is accepted a student may withdraw up to Week 2 Term 1 2019. After this date if a student withdraws the student is still considered part of this course for the year and declared as accepted and will become billable. Note: Students who choose not to continue from their Preliminary (Year 11) into the HSC course must also submit a withdrawal form or will be billed for their HSC course.
FIVE: Timeline To be made available when released from Department of Education. Paperwork: Attached is Version 1 of courses available at TAFE only and the Expression of Interest sheet (EOI) for the Department of Education (Funding application). The funding application must be completed as step 1 of the process. Each student will also need to complete an application form for each institute (TAFE, Hospitals etc) when they are released by the organization. Any questions please contact Mrs Fisher on 9639 7422 ext. 111.
