The President’s Qwerty

A very hearty welcome to a fresh term of activity in U3A Kingborough!

As members will know (most, anyway), Yours Truly took over the leadership reins from Jane Maysat the recent AGM. Just a short piece from me here as we keep the ball rolling into this term and thefollowing one.

Our membership stays at a promising level up-towards 300 (great to see!) and the new Committee iswell under way with the various tasks before us; we hope to post a photo of the Committee on theboard in A Block – watch for it. As previously, the blue dots on the name-badges will help membersidentify Committee folk. We’d be happy to talk.

A challenging programme at Kingston and Woodbridge should meet many people’s interests andenrolments look most encouraging!

The July Mid-Year Lunch (see details below) should be a very social occasion, as in the past, andafford the opportunity to catch up on each others' happenings, U3A and otherwise." Let us all makethe very most of this U3A Year, and feel free to button-hole me at any time – face-to-face at ourKingston base, 0459 581 474, or geoffrey_al@hotmail.com, anyway at all!

Monday 10:00 KA3Moments out of Anthropology - a real Cook's tour Basil SansomThis fascinating course will be an in depth description of exotic customs, beliefs and rites of various societies,and the surprising ways in which they work.Basil was the Professor of Anthropology at the University of West Australia. As well as lecturing he has donefield work in Africa, Lebanon, and northern Australia. Basil's lectures on northern Australian communities andpeoples customs, which he presented last year, were extremely interesting and informative.

Monday 11:30 KA3Changing World - Then and Now Gifford CausonGo back to the period of the industrial revolution, what did people expect and hope for and what happened?Now come to 2012, what do we expect and hope for and what will be the outcome? Can the world's problemsbe successfully overcome? What are the good and the worrying aspects of NOW? There are good things whichwe rarely recognise as well as enormous problems. This is a bigger challenge than the world has ever beforehad to face.Gifford is a well known and regular tutor at our U3A and his popular series have covered a wide variety ofinteresting subjects.

Monday 11:30 KA1Have Your Say Jennie ClarkeThis lively group has been successful for many years. The members, seated in a circle, discuss a wide range ofsubjects that surround our every-day lives. Sometimes controversial, the rules are fixed, with each memberaware that arguing will not be tolerated. Confidentiality within the group assures the members that theiropinion stays in the room, this allowing them to speak freely on the issues involved.Jennie co-ordinates this group and she aims to make sure that everyone sticks to the rules and has their say.A fun and positive group.

Monday 11:30 KA4/ 5 Grevillea WaySmall Engines - Know How & Maintenance Roger HallWe all have 4 cycle motor mowers (and maybe 2 cycle brush-cutters or chainsaws) and occasionally pay to havethem serviced. A detailed set of notes will be provided. The course will include the opportunity for practicalhands on maintenance training (at Roger’s home workshop) with students’ own machines.Roger is an ex TAFE lecturer and examiner and ran his own business. His wide experience makes him anexcellent teacher.

Monday 1:30 KA3Upon this Rock!? David LeamanMy version of the history of Christianity and the papacy in western Europe. Expect to meet an array ofindividuals, some quite odd; strange ideas; some heresies (many still with us); and understand something of thebasis of our culture and modern society. David is well known and a popular tutor at U3A. He is an eminentgeologist, geophysicist and ground water specialist. His many other interests include railways, history andmusic. He has written several books.

Monday 1:30 - 3:30 KA2Creative Writing Jennie ClarkeThis course will give the members the opportunity to creatively tap their brains and put it all into the writtenword. It will concentrate on the method and style of writing, with continuous class evaluation. It is alsoexpected that heavy criticism will be aimed at Jennie Clarke's work thus making the class a joint effort, whilehelping all members to take a closer look at their own style.Jennie prefers to work with a positive and easy-going style and welcomes newcomers and inexperiencedmembers, who just have a yearning to write. She began writing only seven years ago, has written two booksand will use the skills of the experts to maximise her tuition.

Monday 1:30 - 2:30 KA1Mae’r Gymraeg yn Hawdd – Welsh is Easy! - Beginners Peter BallWelsh is the most thriving of the Celtic languages and these sessions introduce the spoken language of today,with light relief from music, video, etc about Welsh culture. For rapid progress, sense of achievement andmotivation, we use the free internet course, “Say Something in Welsh” (www.saysomethinginwelsh.com), Weshall use the SSIW lessons in class and as homework, with extra explanation and practice. Free resources fromBBC Wales, S4C (the Welsh TV Channel) and elsewhere will also be used. For further information feel free tocontact Peter (6239 1265) before enrolling.Peter, from Bristol, studied in Hull and Belfast before lecturing in Uganda, and then specialised in socialpsychology, psycholinguistics and related fields at the University of Tasmania. He enjoys choral singing, art andlanguages.

Monday 2:30 - 4:00 KA1Mwy o Gymraeg – Welsh Continuation Self ManagedOur regular Tutors, Margaret and Guy Nicholson, will be away this Term returning in Term 3. This course isaimed at those who have completed a beginners’ course and want to improve their command of spoken Welsh.There will be an opportunity each week for class members to speak about their activities in Welsh and to engagein conversation.A range of resources from North and South Wales will be provided and some time will be devoted to the textTeach Yourself Welsh. Articles from the adult learners’ magazine, Lingo Newydd will be used regularly forreading and discussion. There will also be some focus on listening to and singing Welsh songs.

Monday 3:00 - 4:30 KA3Basic Computing Val TaberlayClass size 5.Bring your laptop - this course is a basic introduction for Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010. Val's courses with thisnew fangled technology proved popular last term.

Tuesday 9:00 am onwards FieldBushwalkers Tas BoskellClass Limit: 20The walks will be on established tracks and trails about the uplands and coasts around Hobart and occasionallyfurther afield. Duration will be 3 to 5 hours. Participants must have a reasonable fitness level. Please bringlunch, water and a first aid kit. The meeting place for all walks is the Denison Street car park. Be there in time toleave at 9:00am. New members to this group please phone Tas Boskell on 6229 2506 prior to the start ofterm.

Tuesday 10:00 KA3Mindfulness - For Everyday Life & Basic Buddhism - A Wayof Life Neil Hore

This course is split into two 5 week blocks. The first will be a presentation, discussion, and practice of varioustechniques and approaches to Mindfulness. It will include audio tapes, group meditations, and a progression ofpractices. The emphasis will be on the practical aspects. The second five weeks will cover Basic Buddhism,which will include an overview, and weekly discussion of the core tenets of Buddhism in general. Discussion onthe ways of practising them in our lives will include short readings, audio and DVD presentations, and anintroduction to short meditation exercises. Neil has given aspects of the course in the U3A Kingboroughsummer program and he has been interested in the Buddhist way of life for many years.

Tuesday 11:30 KA3Youth3A Book Club Self ManagedOver the term, opportunity will be provided for members to introduce and promote discussion on their ownselected book(s) on travel themes. On the 10th and 17th July the group will discuss the books of GrahamGreene, novelist, playwright, travel writer and critic. In preparation for this, members are encouraged to readone or more of his works - e.g. The Quiet American, The Heart of the Matter, Our Man in Havana, The Powerand the Glory. We will read excerpts, and provide insight into the author, characters, use of language, andsettings as a basis for instigating discussion of issues raised by the books.

Tuesday 1:30 KA1"Murder she Says" Helen PotgeiterThis term we will be studying Shakespeare's Macbeth and Euripidies Medea. Both plays portray MURDEROUS

INTENT sparked by ambition and revenge. It all leads to Murder and Mayhem. These sessions are informalwith plenty of discussion between members as they share their ideas of the characters and drama of thesepowerful plays. Over the last few years Helen has had a ball leading our study of Shakespeare. She enjoyssharing her love of poetry, drama and history. While sometimes the dramas may be heavy we all approach themwith a light touch.

Tuesday 1:30 KA3Shipping and Trade on the Derwent Rex Cox"Shipping, Trade and Industries" provides a look behind the scenes at the port which has played a vital part inHobart's development since the time of first settlement, and continues to do so, though somewhat differently inthe 21st Century. Subjects discussed include port development, whaling, ship-building, fruit exports, and therole of heavy industries such as the zinc works. Rex has been interested in the Hobart port virtually all his lifeand has photographed ships in the Derwent since 1960. He is just completing a book covering some of themore interesting or unusual vessels that have been seen in our harbour. He worked as a Customs Officer for 35years, is a life member of the Maritime Museum of Tasmania, and has had material published in overseas andAustralian nautical publications.

Tuesday 3:00 - 4:30 KA3Basic Computing Val TaberlayClass size 5.Bring your own laptop to this course. This course is a basic introduction for Microsoft Excel 2007 or 2010.Val's courses last year proved popular with members coming to grips with this new fangled technology.

Class Limit: 20Join us for easy 1 to 1.5 hour walks enjoying nature and fresh air on local and rural tracks and trails for aninvigorating, healthy, social activity, ending in a welcome cuppa nearby. Come at 9:15am on Wednesday 20thJune to room KA2. There you will need to complete or update indemnity forms before we take our first shortlocal walk. You will also receive a list of walks and details on how the Strollers and Ramblers groups will operate.

Thursday 10:00 KA1Family at War Marcus HiggsHaving screened Series 1 during first term we will move on to Series 2 of this dramatic family wartime story.The fascinating story of how the events of WW2 affected various members of a working class family inLiverpool, the emphasis being on life on the home front.

Thursday 10:00 KA3Listening to Music John CullitonWIKIPEDIA says “Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its common elements are pitch,rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture.” Then there are those who classify music –Antiquity, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Traditional, World, Folk …. etc. In ourmusic sessions we meander through them all. Sometimes we chat about it, mostly we just listen. If that’s howyou like it come and join us.

Lovers of poetry come together eachweek to read, hear and share their favourite poems in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. Perhaps you mighthave an original piece that you might like to share with the group? The first week's theme will be nature.Please bring along one or three shortish poems. They may be serious, funny, or whimsical but do come andenjoy!

Thursday 1:30 KA1Dangerous Ideas / The Carbon Story Richard GardamDangerous Ideas (5 weeks) We assess the world and our place in it using our senses but how reliable arethey? What is the universe beyond and how can we know about it when it is so far away. And the microcosmwithin, how can we examine that which is so small that it can't be seen? How certain can we be of anything?This is one man's journey of discovery through the scientific method.Carbon Story (5 weeks) What is carbon, where did it come from, why is it important and what is the so calledcarbon debate all about? The course is designed to give you some background to the current debate to allowyou to take part more effectively and to understand what is being proposed. Searching questions especiallywelcome.Richard is a former secondary school teacher of maths, science and IT with side interests in electronics andmusic. At Tas Uni Richard majored in Physics and Geophysics. His hobby is arranging and singing songs, acappella, in the barbershop style.

WOODBRIDGE COURSES

Monday 1:30 - 3:30 WestwindsReaders and Writers Group Sue MossSue returns for Term 2. This course is now in its fourth year with Sue and is open to anyone with an interest,passion or curiosity about words and language. The course will consider writing styles including prose, poetry,memoir and young adult fiction. Participants will be encouraged to step through the door bringing their ideas,thoughts, tragedies, triumphs, work in progress and laughter.Sue works as a poet, performer and reviewer. Her work is published by Penguin Australia and by Allen &Unwin.

Tuesday 10:30 WestwindsRace to the Moon and Robotic Space Explorers /Meeting the Asian Challenge

The course will be split into three blocks. In the first 3 weeks Yme will cover the Race to the Moon. Derek willdo the next four weeks touching on economic, strategic and cultural aspects of Australia's relations with Asia inthe early decades of the 21st century. Yme will return for the last 3 weeks and talk Robotic space explorersfrom Sputnik to Juno.

Yme spent 23 years working for NASAin the Deep Space Network as part of the Spacecraft Operations team at Tidbinbilla tracking space craftlaunches since 1972.

Members from other U3As are entitled to enrol in our Welsh language courses withouttaking out membership of U3A Kingborough. Similarly our members are entitled toenrol in the other U3As for language course they are offering: Hobart, Clarence, andGlenorchy can be contacted through their websites.
