Friday 9 June STUDENT FREE DAY

Friday 9 June Year 12 Formal

FROM THE PRINCIPAL WELCOME TO ALL MEMBERS OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITYReflecting on the past 11 weeks I am extremely proud of the amount of work undertaken by students and staff at Edward John Eyre High School. It has been wonderful to welcome our new Year 11 students to our school, and see them settle in to what has proved to be a very hectic first term.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts that all staff have contributed to make this a successful beginning to the school year. I feel confident we are moving forward in continuing to provide relevant and engaging teaching programs, allowing us to cater for all our students. I would like to welcome new teachers Sophie Hamlyn, Scott King, Chloe Lyons and David Eldridge and Support Staff Paula Zbierski, Kirsty Colbert, Fiona Prentis, Trudy Robinson, Terri Bray and Angelka Delgiacco to our school, who have already made an impact on student learning and wellbeing. I would also like to congratulate Lewis Williams on securing the position of Senior School Coordinator for 2017. Lewis brings much experience to the position and certainly fill the role well.

We have been lucky enough to have had sessions spent with Leadership Specialists Lynne Symons and Peter Chislett, focusing on Leading and School Development. Lynne and Peter, both experienced Principals and directors in Education, bring expertise to leaders to establish clear directions on how we will continue to develop Leadership and key processes.

Early in the term, we held Induction Days for our Year 12 cohort at UniSA and TafeSA to give students an insight into the year ahead and arm them with the skills they may need to see them through their last year of schooling. Our Year 11 cohort attended camps as part of their induction process, something that has not been done before. Feedback was extremely positive and we trust your students found this to be a constructive start to their year.

This year we have adopted a House System, supporting our four houses; to encourage a community feel about the groups as they form relationships to work together as a house.

As part of this system, students have voted on Captains and Vice-Captains to lead activities and earn points for their respective houses throughout the year.

We have also had Student Representatives elected by the student body and we would like to congratulate Alicia Renton and David Dixon for being voted SRC Presidents for 2017. They will lead the school with Vice-Presidents Francil Colorito and Sam Custance.

Our student leaders attended a Student Voice Seminar at Whyalla High School and the response was overwhelmingly positive, with these students returning with Leadership skills and ideas to share among their peers.

There have been a number of improvements made on site, with the Crib and Front Office area upgrade completed over the Christmas holidays. The Western Precinct, which has been a major project, is anticipated for completion before the beginning of Term 2.

Our main foyer will be carpeted over the holidays, with plans to install automatic main doors to improve our disability access and the Uniform Shop getting a bit of a facelift, which will certainly finalise the major projects that have been in planning since last year.

I thank parents for their continued support in ensuring all students are in the correct uniform. With the cooler weather approaching, students will change to long pants and jumpers. This can often be a time where standards slip. Should you need support for your child in adhering to school policy, I ask you to contact the school.

During Term 2, Steve and Nicole Brooks will be taking Long Service Leave and Emma Botei will be taking their classes.

Finally, I would like to thank our whole school community for their efforts and support in Term 1. I am sure we are all looking forward to a well deserved break to ‘recharge the batteries’ and get ready to do it all again in Term 2.

SCHOOL LEADERSEJEHS is making a huge effort to utilise student voice witihin decision making processes. To facilitate this, a Student Representative Council has been developed to support this strategy. The SRC will liaise with the student cohort to make them more included in decision making that affects their education. If students have an idea or concern, please consult with your SRC Representatives.

Mayor Lyn Breuer attended our Assembly to present our newly elected SRC Leaders with their blazers and Certificates. Congratulations to Presidents Alicia Renton and David Dixon and Vice-Presidents Francil Colorito and Sam Custance on their recent appointment to those positions to lead our school.

Shayliegh Fishwick has taken postion of SRC Promotions Rep and we look forward to what the team will bring to the school community for 2017. Tracey Buckley, Student Counsellor

HOUSE SYSTEMSAt EJEHS this year, we have introduced the House system within the school. The objective of these houses is to create communities within the school where each student can make friends, create support networks, and celebrate their successes. These four houses are named after 4 explorers: Flinders, Baxter, Sturt and Wylie.

axter students are managed by Miss Alicia Gillespie. She will be working closely with the Baxter captains, Robertson Reupana and Emily Rawlings, with vice-captains Michen Roberts and Sam Custance under the green Baxter banner.

linders is managed by Miss Chloe Lyons, who will be working with captains Alicia Renton and Jarrod Kittel; vice-captains, Corey Gibbons and Caitlin Brice, representing the blue Flinders flag.

ylie is yellow and is managed by Miss Sophie Hamlyn, with captains Rian Smoker and Brodie Heron, assisted by vice-captains Alex Figueroa and Francil Colorito.

turt and its students will be managed by Miss Zoe Klepper. She will be working with captains Bailey Kesby, Shayleigh Fishwick; vice-captains Ethann Wilson and Luca Starkey, under the red Sturt flag.

Students within each house have given their ideas for activities to their captains, who will be working with the house managers to organise these house activities over the year. Watch this space!

STAGE 2 PHYSICS In Stage 2 Physics we have been using our knowledge of projectile motion to calculate the muzzle velocity of Nerf guns. The 6 shooters have a bullet speed of approximately 12ms-1. This involved shooting the bullets at different angles and measuring how far they flew, before doing the calculations.

STAGE 1 STEM In Stage 1 STEM we have been using the steps of the Engineering Design Process (ask, imagine, plan, create, test, improve) to make a variety of devices. Some of the things we made were Ferris Wheels with weighted carriages, fan powered cars, bridges, flying machines, and boats.

STAGE 2 STEM We have been completing a series of Mars travel related challenges including parachute construction, water testing, rover building, and using parallax angles to calculate distances.

NEXT IN STEM We’ll be using the Spheros to learn about programming and coding. Some of the activities we will doing include chariot races, painting, and water rescues.

YEAR 11 INDUCTION CAMPSOn Wednesday of Week 3, 62 Year 11 students and 8 teachers assembled bright and early in the morning, getting ready to set off on an adventure to be known as Year 11 Camp.

After the gear was packed on the bus, and all students were accounted for, we set off on our merry way, destination: Thuruna Bay Campsite for the boys, and Trinity Haven Campsite for the girls.

We quickly set up the areas, unpacked all the food, equipment, and bags, and then designated and decorated our separate house sections, before jumping straight into our first house activity.

The next 3 days were filled with endless team bonding and relationship building exercises, both in our house groups and as a collective camp group. Some really great friendships were developed amongst the students and the student-teacher relationships were definitely established through these activities. In addition to these activities, students also had a chance to begin designing their house flag, and there were some fantastic designs coming through!

And we can’t not mention the amazing ‘Beach Olympics’, where each house competed against each other in a range of sporting activities, the most memorable being Mr Williams’ tug-o-war competition.

Needless to say it was a jam-packed, 3-day adventure for all involved and we delivered all 62 students and 8 teachers back on the Friday afternoon all tuckered out; teachers probably more so than students.

This is the first time we have run a Year 11 ‘Induction Camp’ before, and we were pleased with the overall outcome. We do welcome any feedback to make next year bigger and better.

Lewis Williams, Senior School Coordinator

REGIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP DAY

Student leaders at EJEHS attended a Regional Student Leadership Day, in which they developed their understanding about personal leadership and how they can make a difference in their school community. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and returned with lots of enthusiasm and terrific ideas.

Some quotes from students following the day were:

“Change is possible!”

“We’re all different types of leaders, but we can all make a difference!”

Tracey Buckley, School Counsellor

WASSAC 2017EJEHS took 10 students to represent the Open division for the WASSAC Athletics Carnival in Week 8. This was held in Roxby Downs. The weather was stinking hot but everyone did themselves proud.

The students representing Whyalla were Sarah Simmonds, Mirella Marino, Shaylee O’Breza, Madeline Edwards, Myahls Smith-Gurr, Tyson Willmott, Randall Bickley, Dustyn Medwin, Louis Polkinghorne, and Blake Rayson.

Our captains for the carnival were Myahls Smith-Gurr and Sarah Simmonds.

The other schools which represented Whyalla were Stuart High and Whyalla High Schools.

It was a fantastic carnival and everyone should be extremely proud of themselves.

YEAR 12 INDUCTIONOn Thursday and Friday in week 1 of the term, all the Year 12 students were involved in a schedule of activities designed to transition students into Year 12.

Their first day included a presentation by Tracey Watson from the UniSA Whyalla campus. Tracey gave the students some strategies and tips to cope with the rigours of Year 12 and information about career pathways at the University. Following this was a range of presentations about SACE and navigating Year 12 successfully.

The afternoon session was a chance for students to try some mindfulness activities to increase the flow of natural energy and information.

On the second day students had the opportunity to turn an envelope into a time capsule which is not to be opened until the end of their Year 12 journey. The afternoon was an opportunity for students to participate in House activities. This was the first time the school has held an induction for students and we were pleased with the results. Feedback is welcome from parents and students to improve the days for next year.

SAPOL ‘FATAL FIVE’ VISITSAPOL’s Road Safety Section recently attended our school and delivered a road safety presentation to Year 11 students entitled “The Fatal Five”, presented by a currently serving Police Officer.

This powerful and interactive program discussed road safety issues, including the causes of road crashes such as fatigue, alcohol and drugs, speed, risk-taking, peer pressure, driver attitudes, and ways in which to reduce the risk of becoming a crash statistic.

This program incorporates using contemporary government road safety messaging through partnership with the Motor Accident Commission (MAC).

There are a number of web sites which may be of further value to our young road users: •raa.com.au •mylicence.sa.gov.au •sapolice.sa.gov.au •howsafeisyourcar.com.au

For more information on Road Safety please feel free to contact the Road Safety Section on 82076586 or by Email: [email protected]

CHEMISTRY VISITOROn Thursday February 23, Sam Taylor, Senior Environmental Scientist at OneSteel, vistied the Stage 2 Chemistry students. This stage of the course deals with Water Treatment, and Sam was able to provide a number of real-world examples from his broad experiences at a number of different mining sites from around the world. He presented aerial photographs of the tailing ponds from the Arrium Pellet plant and highlighted the return of local sea grasses as a result of Arrium's water treatment processes.

The students asked some great questions regarding career progression and direction. Sam described his studies in Geography, Biology and sediment analysis in New Zealand and the many jobs he has undertaken before settling in Whyalla. The students of Stage 2 Chemistry would like to thank Sam for his informative and educational presentation.

MENINGOCOCCAL B VACCINE & IMMUNITY STUDYSA Health and the University of Adelaide are conducting a large study to look at the impact of Meningococcal B (Men B) vaccination in older adolescents.

The Meningococcal B vaccine Herd Immunity study consent packs were sent home with students earlier this term and throat swabs were conducted in Week 10, with the program continuing next term.

This important study will be conducted only in South Australia using the school immunisation program delivery. Meningococcal B vaccine (Men B) will be provided to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The study will examine if Men B vaccination reduces the risk of spread of mengingococcal bacteria that can be present in up to 25% of adolescents. The Men B vaccine is a safe and effective way of protecting against Meningococcal B disease. It is available privately for purchase in Australia and over 10 million doses have already been distributed globally.

All students will be offered the vaccine free of charge as part of the study. If you have any questions about this program, please contact Whyalla City Council’s Immunisation Coordinator on 8640 0344.
