FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Thank you for the warm welcome back I have received. It is always wonderful to travel but there is still

no place like home. I’m very excited to be back at Bull Creek.

It was very reassuring to know that I could confidently leave the school in the very capable hands of

Mrs Mac and Ms Owen and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their competent and

excellent management of the school, in my absence. Their professionalism ensured a seamless

transition and a continuation of all the programs and activities that had been planned.

Congratulations to Mrs Kalli-Anne Austin who is one of 20 teachers across the state who have been

selected on merit for an internship with the WA Centre for Excellence in Explicit Teaching of Literacy.

This is a partnership between the Education Department and Curtin University. We attended the

launch of the centre by The Honourable Sue Ellery MLC, Minister for Education this week. This

initiative will be of enormous benefit to the school; our students and staff.

Welcome back Mrs Martin from her French travels and to Mrs Abbott. It’s lovely to have you both

back at Bull Creek Primary.

At the last assembly we were entertained by the children’s dancing, singing, acting and instrumental

performances. Congratulations on your wonderful acts and for making it to the finals: Lillian, Sophia,

Dylan, Zachary, Kaname, Ryan, Emily and Yaahini.

Thank you to all the children who auditioned for the Talent show, it was very difficult to select the

finalists from such a large range of talented students.

Congratulations also to the students in Glee for their wonderful performance at this assembly.

A huge thank you to Ms Eversden for the time and dedication she puts into running our Glee Club

each Tuesday after school.

The Glee Club recently performed at Crown Theatre as part of the Western Australian Government

Schools Music Society Concert Series. Our Glee Club consists of 44 girls and boys from year four to six

who love singing and dancing. This was the 8th time Glee has performed at Crown Theatre and once

at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. Their performance was based around the theme of Values

which we learn about at Bull Creek. Singing and dancing to ‘Revolting Children’ from the Musical

Matilda with soloists Ella, Emily and Dylan. The second song showed a transition to ‘Hip to be

Square’ a fun dance song from the 1980’s by Huey Lewis and the News. With soloists Ryan, Cate,

Rissah.

A very big thank you to the students, parents and teachers for their support, as performances like

these can’t happen without everybody involved.

The Life Education Van visits Bull Creek Primary School every second year and was here, between the

12th and the 16th of August. All students from Pre-Primary to Year Six had the opportunity to

participate throughout the week. A variety of topics were covered including, cyber safety, physical

health and emotional health. Parents were also invited to attend a free information session inside the

van after the last assembly.

Overall, the students learnt a great deal of important information, enjoyed the interactive activities

and were very happy to see Harold the giraffe again.

Thank you to Miss Di Fonzo for organizing such a worthwhile incursion for the children.

On August 6 representatives from the West Coast Eagles came to our school to present the “Eagles

Cup” shield to our AFL team who went through the season undefeated. The students were presented

the shield by Chris Masten and Brendon Ah Chee. Thanks to Mr Ellis for his outstanding coaching

skills and our students who participated with great skills and teamwork.

Congratulations to all our cross country runners who represented Bull Creek at the Interschool

Competition on Tuesday. Thanks to Mrs Allier for her time and effort in training the students

before school. The students displayed excellent endeavour and sportsmanship on the day and Bull

Creek came 2nd overall. Well done to our exceptional students who placed in the top three:

Angus- Year 6-1st

Lachlan-Year 5-2nd

Judah- Year 5- 3rd

Noah- Year 4- 3rd

Running training before school on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8am will continue until the Faction

Athletics Carnival and all students are welcome to attend.

Our students are enthusiastically practising their athletic skills and teachers are busy placing

children in events. Our Faction Athletics Carnival will be held over two days.

Day 1- Wednesday 11 September- 400m, Jumps, Throws and 800m

Day 2- Thursday 12 September-Running Races, Team Games and Relays

A Program will be sent home closer to the event.

Paul Litherland, from Surf Online Safe, attended our school on Tuesday 13 August and conducted a

presentation for the students in Years Five and Six on the subject of Internet Awareness and Safety.

He offered great knowledge to our students, helping them better understand the risks they may

encounter in the online world. An evening presentation for parents took place in the school library

and it was most informative. Thank you to our P&C for organising and funding this very important

and worthwhile event.

Thank you to our resident scientist, Mr Tisdale for once again promoting Science in our school and

organising hands on activities for the children to experience during lunchtimes. The space themed

projects on display in each of the blocks were amazing.

During National Science Week our students have been actively engaged in learning about Earth and

space sciences. They have researched and developed interesting and informative science displays

ranging from space rockets to planet dioramas. Lunchtime science activities were popular and it was

great to see so many enthusiastic students participating. Thank you to the teachers and parents who

supported their students on this journey of discovery.

Congratulations to Mrs Austin, Mrs Reid, Mrs Pratt and the children in Wattle 4 for their wonderful

assembly last Friday. The students did an incredible job of reciting such a long, entertaining and

informative poem which supported the Science Week Space theme.

This year’s theme “Reading is my Secret Power” was embraced by all the staff who dressed up as

“The Incredibles.” Thank you to all the children and families who made such a huge effort to dress

up as their favourite book character. Thank you also to Mrs Williams for once again organising the

parade and prizes. Judging the costumes in the parade is always such a difficult job and this year

was no exception.

Thank you to the P&C for their work in establishing the new playground for our students. It

certainly is popular and is getting a great deal of use.

All Year Four students have completed the PEAC (Primary Extension and Challenge) test. They are

to be commended on their diligence and persistence during the test.

SCHOOL NEWS

ART

The students of Wattle 7 have been very busy this year. There has been so many exciting events

happening. We had lots of fun designing comfortable beds for Goldilocks and measuring them

during our Fairy Tale theme. During NAIDOC Week we learnt some Aboriginal Dances such as the

Emu Dance. We explored Dreamtime stories and are now researching many interesting facts about

Australian Animals. We are currently reading Wombat Stew and Possum Magic. During Science

Week we were busy making some awesome rockets from recycled materials. We learnt a lot about

friendships and keeping healthy from the Life Ed Van presenter. On Thursday our Year One

students went on an exciting Book Week excursion to listen to stories by author Kerry Anne

Winmar. They also learnt some Noongar words and explored objects that Aboriginal people used.

We loved the Book Week Parade and dressing up in our favourite book characters. Lukas won a

prize for his incredible bird costume. Well done Lukas! Everyone looked incredible including our

teachers! We are now looking forward to performing our assembly and would like to thank all the

wonderful parents who have been helping us with it. It is going to be awesome! We cannot wait for

the Faction Carnival. What an exciting day it will be! It has been an amazing year in Wattle 7 and

we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us.

Bull Creek Sculpture Walk 2019

Wednesday 23rd October Week 2, Term 4

The Bull Creek Sculpture Walk is fast approaching and I have been hearing of some exciting

plans and works in progress! If the standard of the Science Destination Moon projects and the

Book Week costumes are anything to go by I am sure there are going to be some great sculpture

entries!

My aim is to have as many children as possible to work at home either individually or with family

members or friends, to create a sculpture with a Spring Time theme which will be displayed

within the school grounds.

Some classes will be making whole class group entries at school (during art time) that will also be

displayed.

All sculptures will need to be completed and delivered to school by the last week of

Term 3 so that display considerations can be determined before the event.

If you haven’t started a sculpture yet there is still plenty of time!!

You could get some inspiration by googling Sculpture by the Sea or visit Piney Lakes Sculpture

Walk. The City of Melville Public Art Map shows other places you might like to visit that have

public art displayed.

Sculptures can be big or small, simple or elaborate. You can use any materials you like including

recycled or collected objects.

It would be wonderful to have lots of participation in this event which will coincide with a picnic

lunch for families and children showing and looking at their creations.

PATHS

During PATHS lessons students will cover some important topics related to having good manners. The emphasis is to encourage students to think why they behave in the way that they do and to discuss the idea that the way that people act or behave can affect how other people feel towards them. “Polite” behaviours usually make other people feel comfortable. Similarly, “rude” behaviours typically make other people feel uncomfortable.

PATHS lessons on manners will focus on:

Why it’s important to be polite and show good manners.

Different words and phrases that can be used when we are being polite.

The difference between doing something “on purpose” versus “by accident”.

The difference between saying something and actually feeling it.

The importance of tone of voice and body language when conveying a message. At home parents can reinforce the messages taught in this program by:

Discussing with your child the types of behaviours that you consider to be polite and the types of behaviours that you consider to be rude.

Tell your child why you think it’s important for him/her to show polite behaviours.

Praise your child when you see him/her showing polite behaviours at home and tell him/her how that made you feel.

If your child shows rude behaviour at home, explain how that made you feel and ask him/her if he/she can think of a more polite way of doing things.

When your child says something polite, point out how the sound of his/her voice and how his/her body language came across to you. That is, did the voice and body communicate the same message as the words - were they being sincere?

Smiling Minds

The Smiling Minds curriculum, that is being implemented in all classes, covers topics such as Gratitude, Making Decisions and Setting Goals.

Gratitude is being thankful for the good things that happen in life. Gratitude is a feeling of appreciation in response to something we have received. This could be anything from a birthday present to a smile of encouragement from someone.

Practising gratitude promotes positive emotions and helps you switch out of negative thinking. When we are grateful, the brain regions associated with understanding other people’s perspectives, empathy, regulating emotions and feelings of relief, light up are activated.

Develop your child’s gratitude practise at home by making it a routine to notice what made them smile or who helped them or something they are thankful for.

The program helps students identify and grow their own strengths and recognise and appreciate the strengths of others. Students who know and use their strengths are more resilient and display strong academic performance.

At home;

Prompt your child to be hopeful about the future.

Encourage your child to set personal goals and help them to achieve them.

Encourage your child to identify their strengths, for example, helping others, or being kind.

Ask your child to identify a new strength they would like to increase. Decide what actions they could take to increase this quality. Then encourage them to practise, practise, practise.

Values

This term we are practising the value of Pride.

Pride means feeling honour and dignity in one’s own and others’ achievement.

You can show Pride simply by doing your best. You can take care of the school and your classroom by keeping them clean. You can show pride by being helpful to others. You can even show pride by participating and trying your best in your school work and in school events.

The Aussie of the Month recipients for Pride were; Samantha and Gauri.
