1 President’s Report Our Club continues to “hum” or one may refer to the activity as a buzz. Whatever you want to call it, there is lots happening. April was another busy and successful month for us. Our resident builders, John and Wally and their offsiders, Eric and Alby put in another day lining the shed, with another wall now completed. These blokes do a great job and the Club is very grateful. Alan and Alby have now all but completed the “SHOP” cupboard and again, thanks to these guys. This will make trading much easier for our shop attendants, Adrian and Dave, as well as being more convenient for members. With a large amount of wood coming in to the club, Charlie has been kept busy pricing, shelving and selling it. This is proving to be a good income earner for the club while making timber available at a very cheap rate. I encourage all members to take advantage of this while the ‘good stuff’ is on offer. There is some quality timber available for all disciplines. The Thursday turning group for advanced techniques is flourishing. The boys have done a session making a mallet and anvil under the instruction of Wally Gaggin and last session completed a finial under the tutelage of Laurie Gwynne. It is great to see members expanding their range of skills. Thanks to Bill Sedgwick who is supervising this program. Currently, the Machinery group is working on a project making a box using the table saw. This project, run by Ian Want and Bob Haines is also being used as a competency test for the table saw. All members will need to complete this test in future before being permitted to use the equipment. This is the first step in our knowledge-based training which will soon extend across all machines. The flood of new members into the Club has caught us out a little, with many coming into the workshop without the necessary ‘induction’. While we try not to be too pedantic about our rules, it is necessary that all members are up to scratch on the workings of the club and the applicable WH&S obligations. To overcome this oversight, an induction session will be run after Show & Tell on 11 May and will be repeated on Thursday 12 May at 7pm. All members who have joined the club during 2015 and 2016 are required to attend a session. Further sessions will be conducted as the need arises. Last month a group of members ran a stall at the Lions Club market day at Cleveland. While we didn’t expect a lot of sales activity, it was an opportunity to advertise our Art in Wood Show which will be held at this venue in December. Thanks to those members who gave up their time to ‘fly the flag’. On 23

rd April we hosted Ipswich, Caboolture, Pittsworth and Toowoomba Clubs at on Open Day at the Club. About 30

visitors and a similar number of our own members enjoyed a great day of fellowship and learning. Formalities were minimal but some discussion of tool sharpening by Bill, segmented turning and jigs for same by Peter Anderson from Pittsworth, and some general sharing of club procedures kept the group entertained. It was really good to see the work being produced by other clubs and to talk with those involved in similar activities to our own. Morning Tea provided by members and prepared by our willing ladies and their helpers welcomed everyone, and a great BBQ lunch cooked by Bill and John Pye finished the day off well. The feedback has been positive and it is hoped we can have another with some different clubs later in the year. These days are socially enjoyable and I believe, beneficial to us individually and as a club. Thanks to Charlie’s organization, twenty odd members and spouses had a good night out at the Redlands Sporting Club. A good meal and great company made for an enjoyable night without having to cook or wash-up. Our next social function will be a seafood night and State of Origin at the clubhouse on Wednesday 1st June. (Please let Bill know if you are coming.) Carbatec have asked us to host the Robert Sorby Demonstrator, Chris Pouncy from the UK on 2nd July. Mark the date in your diary as we will again host visitors from other clubs and this time will need helpers to cook and sell morning tea and lunch. Chris’s demo at Ipswich last year was both entertaining and educational. We look forward to another big day. All the positives unfortunately, must be tempered with a negative and, as usual, it is regarding improper use of equipment. The linisher was left in an appalling state by someone this month. The belt was clogged beyond a useful surface, which leads us to wonder why anyone would mistreat equipment to a point of it being unusable and unsafe. It was found that so much pressure was applied that the glue on the belt had melted. PLEASE – Use equipment properly and leave it in the state in which you found it AND clean up your own mess. We have a busy club these days so it is more important than ever that everyone does their bit to keep the workshop, clubhouse, and equipment (from the urn to the band saw) clean and operational. Little things like sweeping out, emptying bins (especially if you’re the one that filled it), emptying the dust extractor bin, and tidying up after your activity, help to keep the club a safe and presentable place. It’s all about consideration for others, something for which we are often critical of younger generations so let’s not be hypocritical. A number of our valued members are off on short (or not so short) holidays away from the club. To all those members, I wish you a good time. To those who are stayin’ home we’ll need to pick up the slack for these people. Have a good month. Steve.

Woodworking Tips

Planing Short Boards

I can never bring myself to throw away the short pieces left over from a project. They’re ideal for small projects, but they often have to be planed to thickness before I can use them. The problem is running a board that is less than 12" long through a planer is definitely not recommended. It can get caught between the infeed and outfeed rollers, causing it to lift off the planer bed. At best, this causes severe snipe (a deeper cut near the end of a board.) At worst, the board can get chewed up, damaging the cutterhead in the process. To prevent this, I glue long, narrow scrap pieces to both edges of the short board, see drawing at right. These scrap pieces span across both feed rollers, so the board stays flat on the bed of the planer (Planer Cutterhead Detail). The result is a planed surface that’s mirror smooth. If there’s any snipe, it ends up on the scrap pieces, not the board. Once the board is planed to the desired thickness, just cut off the narrow scrap pieces.

Space-Saving Router Table

Clamp this shop-made router table to your bench and you’re ready for action. The laminated construction makes it rigid and simple to build, and it can be easily stored out of the way when you’re done working

The router table that you have been looking for that is easy to set up, pack away and can be stored almost anywhere. You can clamp it to the edge of a workbench or across a pair of sawhorses. It’s also easy to make, because instead of routing out the opening, it’s simply sawn out.

Glue the bottom piece of 6mm hardboard to the plywood core. Then use your router’s base plate to trace the hole for the base.Cut the hole with a jigsaw and glue on the top piece of 6mm hardboard. Add the plastic laminate to complete the “sandwich.”Use the router base to locate the screw holes. Drill these holes and countersink them from the top. Add a 25mmx50mm cleat to the bottom of the table about 75mm from the back edge. The cleat helps brace the table against your bench. Finish off the top with a little paste wax.

Future Clubhouse Re-Development All members are invited to submit suggested floor plans for this future re-development so that our clubhouse can better meet our changing requirements. A current floor plan and dimensions are provided. Please consider the best use of space for: 1. Kitchen-office-toilets 2. Flexible open spaces for burning, scrolling, carving and the library. The shop will be re-located to the new shed. Please submit your proposal to Jim Thallon.
