DISTRICT 7360 NEWSLETTER August 2015 Greetings Fellow Rotarians, I’ve always thought it strange the Rotary theme for August is membership. You would think it would be another month, when prospects are not on vacation or have their minds on other things – least of which is Rotary. But that may be why August is membership month … it is certainly a time to reenergize, gather with family and friends, and invite them into our Rotary circle. Rotary is an incredible organization, and who better to communicate with than friends and family?? Let’s start with your significant other. If he/she is not a Rotarian, why not? Unless it will break the bank to have a family member join Rotary, now may be the time to bring your partner on board! My wife, Nancy, took that leap on July 1 st of this year, and she is truly an “engaged” Rotarian. For her, it was simple to join our organization, since she knew so much about Rotary in the first place. So, here are some ideas I have mustered to help non-Rotarians become Rotarians. First, invite a friend or neighbor to come to a meeting. (Most Rotarians have never done that!) If you have an attractive meeting place, good meal, and an engaging speaker, this will be a plus for your prospect. Always meet the prospect at the entrance to your meeting place. Better yet, pick them up at their home or job site. Always ensure your guest feels at home. Club members should applaud your guest for being at the meeting once they have been introduced. Make sure the first meeting is a casual event. NEVER bombard them with Rotary facts unless they ask questions. And even then, keep your answers to the point. Also, the meals and drinks should be free as long as they are being “rushed”. (Let them leave the meeting hungry for more information, and let them know they will learn more when they come to the next meeting/event. Remember, you didn’t marry your partner on your first date (at least chances are slim you did!), and the process of turning a prospect into a Rotarian works the same way. Second, promote a Rotarian to be the Retention Officer for your club. This is vital. Your Retention Officer should contact Rotarians who have not been to several meetings and ask if there is anything that can be done to get them back to club meetings. Assistant Governor Dick Langer is the District Retention Chair and is a great resource for ideas about retention. You can email him at [email protected] or call him at 570.971.2414. He will share thoughts on how to make your Rotary Club even more vibrant and keep your members! Third, start a Satellite Club. The Bloomsburg Club, to which I belong, has grown over 35 percent this past year by starting a satellite club in our community. This will not only gather new members, but perhaps ex- Rotarians as well. (They may need a more convenient meeting time to get them back into Rotary!) Contact John Thomas, the past president of the Bloomsburg Rotary Club. He has been instrumental in the satellite club process. John can be reached at 570.594.6656 and would be very happy to discuss how you can get a satellite club off the ground. Also, I will be addressing satellite clubs in future District Newsletters. Of course, for membership questions, Mike Hicks, our District membership chair, is a great resource to your club for anything membership! He can be reached at 717.360.2159 or [email protected]. While the district goal of 2,800 members is a lofty one, I believe it is certainly achievable by considering each of these three points. All the very best on your “Membership Journey”! Yours through Rotary Service, Dave Ford, District Governor

Greetings Fellow Rotarians, I’ve always thought it strange the Rotary theme for August is membership. You would think it would be another month, when prospects are not on vacation or have their minds on other things – least of which is Rotary. ONE ROTARY SUMMIT

District 7360 held the world’s first One Rotary Summit on August 1. Over 100 members came together to experience this new training approach. The goal of the summit was to emphasize the need to see all that we do as interconnected. Increasing Membership means that we have more resources to do better projects. Better projects means that we can get more publicity to spread news about Rotary. Increasing the awareness of Rotary means that we can recruit members better. – And around and around it goes.

The key for those who attended is to take the ideas and resources from the One Rotary Summit and spread that to each club.

We were delighted to have RI Director Jennifer Jones join us. Her exuberance for Rotary came shining through. We were also joined by Stephen Zabor (D6630) and Patty Meehan (D7280) who came in to help kick off the One Rotary Summit.

Additionally, we enjoyed the beginning of Rollin’ with Rotary (facebook:RollinWithRotary) who used our summit as a launching pad for their 9 day journey to promote Rotary.

If you were at the One Rotary Summit you received an email with a link to a survey. Please respond to it. Your input will help with our future plans. DISTRICT 7360 PICNIC AT KNOEBEL’S ON

SECOND ANNUAL ROTARY TAILGATE October 3, 2015

Penn State vs Army

You are invited to join Centre County Rotarians for a special tailgate party two hours prior to the game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and Army. All Rotarians and guests are welcome at this tailgate. We had such a

great time with our celebrate Rotary Tailgate last year we decided to do it again. This is a great opportunity to visit with fellow Rotarians and to make new friends.

CATA will run shuttle buses to the Jordan Center continuously before, during, and after the game. The cost of a one-way ride is $1.75. CATA will be posting the stops along their route on the internet.

The tailgate will be held on the paved lot at spots 816 and 817 which is a short distance from the Jordan Centre on Curtin Road (Jordan Center on the right and stadium on the left). If you take the shuttle bus, walk to the intersection of Curtin and Porter Roads and make a right turn onto Porter Rd. Walk down eight rows until you are across from Medlar Field. The spots are near the entrance to the lot. Look for the Rotary signs on our blue canopy.

Well over 100 Rotarians and guest joined us last year for our tailgate and we hope for even more this year. The five clubs in Centre County are sponsoring this event. We would like to know how many Rotarians and guests from outside the Centre County Clubs will be attending. Please email or call if you can join us at this fun event.

See you there!

For additional information or to RSVP please contact: Jeane Singer - [email protected] (814) 237-2991 Bonnie Abrams – [email protected] (814-237-0837)

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP

August is Membership and New Club Development Month, which means it's time to celebrate your Rotary club, your members, and the good you do in your community and around the world.

Make the most of your membership. Here's how. 1. Identify a need in your community and work with your club to design a hands-on project that addresses it.

1. Learn more about Rotary Global Rewards, a new member benefit program that offers discounts on products and services – travel, hotels, car rentals, dining, and entertainment. Visit the Member Center.

2. Identify a need in your community and work with your club to design a hands-on project that addresses it.

3. Learn how to apply for a grant to implement a project.

4. Know a young leader? Tell him or her about Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and Rotary Youth Exchange.

5. Explore other clubs. Did you know that you’re welcome to attend any club’s meeting, anywhere in the world? Use the Club Finder tool or download the Club Locator app to find a meeting when you travel.

6. Try a new role. Clubs need leaders. Take the first step and ask where your club needs help.

7. Attend the next Rotary International Convention in Seoul, Korea. Enjoy inspiring talks from global leaders, celebrities, and activists. Meet members from around the world. It’s the ultimate way to understand the scope of Rotary.

8. Be part of history and help eradicate polio. Find out how to support PolioPlus and join the movement to end polio.

9. Use the resources in the Rotary Brand Center to help you communicate, inspire, and collaborate.

10. Meet other members who share you interests and passions through a Rotary Fellowship or Rotarian Action Group. There are about 70 groups, catering to everyone from cooking enthusiasts to water and sanitation project experts.

11. Connect on social media. Rotary has official pages on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr, and more.

12. Support The Rotary Foundation. Contributions provide millions of dollars in grants that support our humanitarian service around the world.

The District Governor made a new friend at the Spikes Game on July 18. Maybe he could convince him to join the State College Rotary Club; what would his classification be? Homerun Dancer?
