A Rabbit-Tale By

Pastor Mark Haas

3

As I begin this column, we’re just past the midway point of July. I’m was out of ideas for August, so I went to the Thrivent calendar that hangs in my office for inspiration…one year, a long time ago, I based my year’s worth of “Rabbit Tales” on the picture the AAL wall-calendar posted for the next month. So, today I looked ahead to August 2014 and found a picture of a person’s hand filled with sweet Texas figs. It gave me an idea!

Last December, my brother-in-law died as a result of a freakish accident: he fell face for-ward, having slipped on an ice patch in his driveway at his home in North Las Vegas. The fall burst a large umbilical hernia that turned sepsis, unknown initially to the doctors, while they were treating Dan for a dislocated shoulder. It was a major surprise when he died three days later!

Almost equally surprising was my niece, Christina’s pregnancy (Dan’s daughter)! Chrisi and her husband, Art, had tried earlier in their marriage but had given up hope due to Chrisi’s health and size…she is a large young woman. They had talked at length with me about adoption as Dee and I had adopted our three children. When about six weeks after Dan’s death, Chrisi discovered she was pregnant, everyone was shocked and excited! She is now 32 weeks along and is set to deliver in 32 days! It’s been an amazing journey, especially as she has continuously let her Facebook Friends know her progress!

Since the beginning of her pregnancy, Chrisi has posted comparisons: “Peanut” as he has been dubbed, has been compared in size to all kinds of fruit and vegetables. One week he’s the size of a grape, walnut, apple, banana, cucumber, coconut, cantaloupe, pineapple, squash, head of Romains lettuce, and today a Florida pomelo. What’s a pomelo? The Inter-net dictionary says it is “ Citrus maxima (or Citrus grandis), (Common names: shaddock, pomelo, pummelo, pommelo, or lusho fruit) is a crisp citrus fruit native to South and Southeast Asia. It is usually pale green to yellow when ripe, with sweet white (or, more rare-ly, pink or red) flesh and very thick albedo (rind pith). It is the largest citrus fruit, 15-25 cen-timeters (5.9-9.8 in) in diameter, and usually weighing 1-2 kilograms (2.2-4.4lb).” Have you ever eaten a pomelo yourself? Well, the size of a pomelo tells me that “Peanut,” aka Arthur Bentheim IV when he arrives, is going to be large! So were his mother and uncle at birth!

Another comparison Chrisi has monitored is the size of the baby’s hand as it is shaded into a five-fingered object in contrast to the outline of an adult female-sized hand. Peanut’s getting pretty well-developed as a human being. And to show him off with pictures as proud parents tend to do, Chrisi has been posting ultrasound pictures taken “in utero,” which has his amaz-ing face as the focal point!

It is truly amazing that one tragic event has led to one very happy surprise! And most sur-prising is to watch the chronicled development and prenatal attachment between Chrisi and Peanut! She is one very happy mother!

Page 3: Newsletter august 2014

And just as amazing are you and me, too! Each of us is as unique as can be. You and I may re-semble our parents and siblings, but we’re unique! We were fashioned by a very loving Father to be His children. He has known about us since before the creation of the universe. He has watched each of us develop from the time of our conception to this very moment in our lives. He has overseen our growth physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. He has stood by us in good times and bad and encourages us with special and normal gifts: forgiveness of sins, life and salvation as well as food, clothing and shelter!

A good way to summarize what I’ve been writing about comes from the great Reformer, Mar-tin Luther, who provides us with this explanation in his Small Catechism regarding our creedal belief in the activities of God, our Father: “I believe that God has made me and all creatures;

that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.”

A God who knows us this well is reflected in the life of each and every mother and father, es-pecially parents who know and acknowledge the love of our heavenly Father. They cannot love us as deeply and thoroughly as our Lord Jesus, but Christian parents do love us even when we think they’re nuts at times! That reflects our and their sinfulness as opposed to a perfect God;

however, by grace through faith we do grow in righteousness and often that is when we care for our children!

Had Dan survived his accident, he would have been one of the proudest grandparents you could ever meet! No doubt the family will need to reel-in Chrisi and Art a bit as they attempt to spoil Peanut with their attention, indulgence, and parental love and compassion. But in all their exuberance for the their child, as best you can imagine it, compare it to how much our Father has loved us and graciously and lavishly provides for us! We have a great God! Our gratitude can never be enough, but by faith we respond in thanksgiving, praise, service to him and our neighbor, and in obedience!

By the time you read this column, Chrisi will be almost 34 weeks along. More ultrasound pic-tures, fruit and vegetable-sized comparisons will have been made and Peanut’s hand will be that much larger. He will also be that much closer to heaven and all of God’s promises as his Holy Baptism is already in the planning stage. Grace upon grace will also be his as they are ours as we together are the family of God!

Blessings on your month of August and all that it brings our way…in the Lord!

Yours in Christ’s service,

Pastor Mark Haas, Soli Deo Gloria

Note to the Ushers:

Please be sure to count and log attendance and communion in the notebook provided in the cabinet. It is vital for our records. Communion cards are collected and put in the office after the service.

Please be sure to empty offering trays and return them to the altar. Put contents into a zipper bag located in the counters cup-board and put bag into safe after each service.

If you are ushering at the 9:00 service, you need to start the coffee. Please DO NOT dog open the doors. There is no need for that anymore. The doors will remain open when you unlock them and the panic bars work without being dogged.

If you are ushering at the 10:30 service, you need to clean up the coffee cart and put it away, remove all white sheets from the attendance pads and put them in the office. Check ALL doors in the church and Sunday school area to be sure they are locked and the lights are all off.

Board of Trustees Monthly Update Report

August, 2014

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ. July marked the beginning of a new year for your Board of Trustees, (BOT). Please join me in thanking past President Larry Hermone for all his dedication, professionalism, and the countless hours he provided our church family. He is an honorable man indeed! Also to be thanked are our continuing members, Ken Freese as Secretary, Donna Kemppainen as Treasurer, Tom Hayhurst and our newest member Bill Swift as members at large. Of course Pastor Mark should always be thanked for every-thing he does for our church body.

YOUTH LEADER: Our continued search for a new Youth Leader is paramount in our list of goals. I’m hop-ing one (or more) of you will be able to assist us. This can be as easy as just thinking of someone you know who fits the bill so to speak. Perhaps it’s a relative, neighbor, co-worker’s acquaintance who is a Christian who loves children and feels the passion to share God’s abundant love. There is of course more to it than just that but it’s a start. If someone comes to mind, please have them contact Pastor or any Board member. In addition, we would love to hear from any of you who have an interest in assisting us with the search process. Our chil-dren’s parents, teachers, or anyone who can add value comes to mind. This is not a time to be shy. This posi-tion is so important to our family’s future. Yes, family! You will hear me say that a lot because we are a fami-ly. Brothers and sisters in Christ – we are a church family. So please thoughtfully consider and pray how you can use the talents God has given you to help us locate a new Youth Leader.

SUNDAY SCHOOL: While speaking of our children, we are in great need of more Sunday school teachers and aides. Donna Kemppainen and Mindy Durand have been getting the word out but few have responded. Please don’t make the mistake thinking this position is ‘just for women’. I hear teaching our children about Jesus using crafts and story-telling can be fun and quite rewarding. Personally, I have never been a Sunday school teacher. I guess I never felt ‘capable’ of teaching small children but having said that, I did a pretty good job with my own kids. So since we need more helpers, I decided I would sign up as a teacher’s aide. It’s a good place to start. So who’s up for the challenge? Who cares enough about our little ones to dedicate one time per month? Who isn’t afraid of an innocent child? That’s right! It’s YOU! Please contact Mindy, Donna or Pastor to learn more.

FIRST FOR OTHERS: It’s our motto, our mantra, and even the name of our WEB page; but what does it mean to you-personally? I have asked the Board members and now you to brainstorm on a project or program that we at First can do for/with our community. Remember, while brainstorming, no idea is too crazy or out there and will never be mocked. From those whacky thoughts come great possibilities! So put on your thinking caps and go for it. Please submit your ideas to Pastor, a Board member, e-mail or the offering plate. Two prizes (nominal value) will be awarded. One prize will be for the best idea and one for the nuttiest idea as judged by the Board. Winners will be decided at an upcoming meeting and prizes distributed after the following church service. Please remember to include your name if you want to be eligible for a prize.

I look forward to a positive and successful year as your new President. I am honored the Board elected me and look to them, and you, for support, inspiration, and assistance. I praise God and ask for His wisdom to guide the Board and me as we lead our church family forward.

In His most gracious name!!

Laurie Laurie M. Hertzberg 530 626-7464

FLC Outreach Message for August 2014

This month I invite your attention to a valuable outreach resource now available. Some members have confessed difficulty in consistently reaching out faithfully to neighbors. This became especially burdensome to them as they were reminded last month of Jesus teaching in the temple courts (found in Matthew 22 v. 37-39) concern-ing “Which is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your

heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, This is the first and greatest commandment; And the second

is like it, Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two command-ments.” Also, the ”outreach” activities of Jesus and His disciples as recorded in the book of John resulted in many addi-tional believers. Jesus describes their mission in John.15:5 ,7, 8,17,26, as follows: I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and my word remains in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given you.this

is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit showing yourselves to be my disciples. Love each other. ...the

Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify, and you also must testify.

The above quotes from Holy Scripture clearly delineate our assignment, i.e. our mission. Not all members learned outreach early in their Christian walk, and some that did so during an early stage of their Christian walk and then gradually became overloaded with other activities. Still others relocated and felt unsure of how to pro-ceed in the new setting. Even if one has prior experience doing outreach in times past, changes have occurred, communities are different, neighbors were of a younger age, or the current culture was different, or neighbor-hoods were more accommodating. Well I have good news for you! If issues such as these I have cited are the reason you are not active in Outreach to your neighbors, I assure you that you will find great help if you will obtain and read the new book entitled Joining Jesus on His Mission. I received it and completed reading it this week! It provides just the detailed instructions and guidance contemporary Christians need to effectively come alongside Jesus in this mission. It contains improved and tested insights gained from thorough current investiga-tion and broadly tested successful implementation. It is an easy read and down to earth. You will be blessed! The author is the Rev. Greg Finke whom I referenced last month. To quote LCMS California, Nevada, Hawaii District President, Dr. Robert Newton, “Wherever I travel in America I find Christians and their Churches in need of a reliable “road map” to help them navigate our post-churched domain. Joining Jesus on His Mission hits the mark. A must read!” --Dr. TerryTieman, Executive Director Transforming Churches Network comments “Greg Finke demonstrates how anyone, no matter how adventuresome can join Jesus on the most exciting mission field in the world. And we don't even have to leave our neighborhood to do it.“ --Sarah Guldalian, Lutheran Hour Ministries - “This book is incredible! Greg's revelation … is refreshing, re-lieving, and invigorating. He shows us how to follow Jesus and get beyond all the thinking that can paralyze us and suck all the joy out of our calling.” --Dr. Jock Ficken, Executive Leader Pastoral Leadership Institute – If I were to recommend one book that in-vites people into the mission of God, this would be it! Practical! Playful! Powerful! Greg is a master at helping people simply start! The 190 page paperback copies of Rev. Greg Finke's “Joining Jesus on His Mission” are available from Ama-zon.com at $14.39 and Kindle copies at $8.49. It is a wonderful book to read. It is really welcomed by all who have read it; this is especially so for LCMS

congregations! Joining Jesus' mission is about changing what we do as individuals going into our neighbor-hoods, as well as people we network with in workplaces, professional associations, and other networking activi-ties. God's Holy Spirit is active among these people. This will become apparent as they interact with you or me. One must simply be attentive, wherever we are, observe the persons with us, and note when one is “ripe” to hear “the good news” from us. Blessings upon your missioning and love for your neighbors, Harold Williams

Dear Marian,

How does the church library go about getting new books? Some categories are huge (Fiction) and others are kind of puny (Health). Not trying to complain but it’s a little lopsided.

Thanks.

Misty FydeMisty FydeMisty FydeMisty Fyde

Dear Misty,

I agree, the number of books in each category is very unequal. Here’s how it works:

The annual budget for the library at this time is $50. That doesn’t go very far if there are supplies to be purchased for repair, labeling or other upkeep issues. Any-one wishing to give financial aid to the library can do so by designating funds to the library, just as would be done for support of the music, Sunday School, flower ar-rangements or any other special interest. However, the most frequent source of new books is donation by members of the church.

One of our most recent donations is an inspiring biography, Bonhoffer: Pastor,

Martyr, Prophet, Spy. It will be available for checkout in August after it has re-ceived its category labeling, checkout pocket and card.

Because of the limited funding, it is of utmost importance that borrowed books be returned.

The Nia Experience

The Nia experience is how we describe the sensation of taking a Nia class. Typically Nia classes include 55 minutes of movement to diverse music. Nia dance cardio fitness classes are taught by instructors licensed in the Nia Technique. Each class includes mindful movement guidance and somatic education; class cycles in-

clude warm-up, sustained non-impact aerobic conditioning, strength training, cool down and stretching. Nia Fitness classes are taught to music, including pop, electronica, Jazz, Latin, New Age, Indian and hip hop. They employ 52 basic movements and techniques that draw on a combination of Jazz, Modern and Duncan Dancestyles, Tai Chi, TaeKwonDo and Aikido; and the bodymind healing arts of Feldenkrais Method, Alex-

ander Technique and Yoga. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Nia's purpose

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a ful-filling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a con-sciousness that extends beyond our own

Move I.T. - Get Nia Fit!

Move I.T. is a new and unique approach to cardiovascular interval training. The class is based on Nia Tech-nique's 52 Moves designed to bring conditioning to every body part, muscle group and joint in a 60 minute experience. Move I.T. classes are distinquished by somatic coaching, sequential intervals that isolate and inte-grate Nia movements and choreography designed to deliver 4 types of conditioning: aerobic, anaerobic, reflex-ive and voluntary.

Nia 52 Moves

These 52 movements have been distilled through 30 years of somatic movement exploration to represent the best in holistic systematic and systemic body-mind-emotion-spirit conditioning. Practiced in isolation and in-tegrated through dance movement, Nia 52 Moves are proven to physically condition the body and enhance movement skill and increase overall perceptual motor skills represented in flexibility, mobility, agility, stabil-ity and strength. The movements originate from diverse modalities spanning dance, martial arts and therapeu-tic practices.

Youth News by Donna Kemppainen

Christian Education News!

Some of the youth and adults came on Thurs-day to remove the CDC things from the Sun-day School room we have been using to store it. The good furniture and misc. toys were put into the shed and the rest was placed on the patio for the garage sale. Saturday was a slow day for garage sales. We had only about ten people show up but we were still able to get rid of quite of bit of stuff for a very good price to them, we did get $72.05. On Sunday the congregation was in-vited to go see if there was anything they wanted and several people found things they liked and a member gave us a donation also. Monday I called three pre-schools and invited them to come and get what they wanted. Two of them came and they took quite a lot of things and were very happy to have them! Lori Vickers took a lot of books to see if the used book store wanted any of them. The rest will be taken to the Hospice where it will bring money for a very worthy cause. Thank you so very much to all the volunteers that helped us move the mountain of things to the patio. Gemma Meadows, Jesse Jimenez, Nick Salonites, Emilee Durand, Carol Schultz, Laurie and Jack Hertzberg, Steve and Donna Kemppainen. The youth met on Sunday for a late burrito lunch to make plans for their new youth room. So far we know they want a ping pong table and everyone wants the room painted a dif-ferent color! So, could be a checkered room! They would also like to paint a mural on the retaining wall that looks into their room!

We have a ‘niche’ for EVERYONE! There are so many opportunities for you to serve your church and your Lord, see below:

Operate the computer upstairs during the services. It only takes one finger and that finger only has to push the space bar to move the slide to the next! Plus you get to sit in the balcony and get a bird’s eye view! Free training, and we’ll sit with you until you are comfortable!

Operate the sound board. There are at least a mil-

lion buttons on the sound board but I’m told you don’t need to worry about all of those, only a select few!

They are going to set up a class in the near future so maybe you can join the class and see what it’s all

about, then decide. It would look good on your re-sume…?

If you have questions talk to Lionel Rogers or Ste-

phen Cass, or call the church office!

Be a Sunday School Teacher or aid! We have three

Sunday School classes and we need more teachers! Please consider volunteering for just one Sunday per month—for 45 minutes!

If you are waiting for “Someone Else” to do it, they won’t! “Someone Else” is burned out and the other

“Someone Else” never raises his hand to help. Please find your niche and help us to keep the church functional! Contact Pastor if you have

questions

Note: if you read this article you have helped!

One Way Productions presents the true story of Corrie ten Boom. An encore presentation of The Hiding Place, performing ONE NIGHT ONLY on Friday, August 8th the Harris Center in Folsom. Ticket prices are $15-50 with group discounts available. Purchase tickets online at www.harriscenter.net or call the Box Office at (916) 608-6888.

During World War II in Holland, Corrie ten Boom and her family of Christian watchmakers are secretly sheltering Jewish refugees in their small home. With courage and conviction they defy the Nazis until they are discovered and ar-rested, heroically sacrificing their freedom. This gripping drama follows Corrie and her sister Betsie as they fight the realities of the Na-zi regime with love and endure the Holocaust with a steadfast faith. Due to the mature theme, this production is not recommended for chil-dren under 12 but contains no offensive lan-guage or violence. NOTE: Ian Gilzean, my 16 year old son, is a cast member as well as an active youth member of Light of the Hills Lutheran Church, Cameron Park.
