Presidents CornerStudent, Associates, Members, and Life Members:
Happy New Year to everyone! I hope your Christmas and/or other Holiday celebration(s) were both fun and relaxing.
Our next luncheon is coming up this Tuesday, January 10th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will be meeting across the street from the Holiday Inn (University of Memphis) at the Fogelman Executive Center. Come up the stairs or elevator to the 2nd floor.
While celebrating Christmas, I began to reflect on my childhood heroes, especially while visiting Universal Studios with my family. It has been a long time since I visited Orlando. At least with Universal Studios, technology has evolved to the point where you can immerse yourself (literally) in a hero’s realm where 3D storylines are rendered by the very best animation gizmos. My old 1970’s LP vinyl Spiderman album with its comic book couldn’t possibly compare to Spiderman jumping in front of me and reaching out from the 3D animation ride I perilously bounced through. Wow!
But what about real-life heroes? Just recently, we lost a true American hero, John Herschel Glenn, Jr. Not only was he an Engineer like many of us, he served his country, set a transcontinental speed record in 1957, was the first American to orbit the Earth, and even served as a Senator. John’s thirst for knowledge was immeasurable and he’ll be truly missed.
I can’t say I’ll ever top John’s resume, but I do thirst for knowledge. For all of us, it’s never too late to acquire a new skill or familiarize yourself with new and emerging technologies. As you know, the annual ASHRAE Winter Conference is upon us and is a perfect opportunity for you and others in our industry to learn more about our business. In addition to several PDH opportunities, there will be several technical committee sessions and you don’t have to be on the committee to attend. Everyone is welcome to sit in and listen. If this isn’t enough to soak your sponge, head over to the 2017 AHR Expo. Get this, there will be nine football fields worth of exhibitor space making this the largest show ever (funny, don’t they claim it’s the largest every time the Expo is held)!
When you’ve reached critical mass and can’t take anymore, enjoy all that Las Vegas has to offer and see a show or venture to the Hoover Dam and / or Grand Canyon. Just do me a favor, don’t come back having given Las Vegas too much of your money!
For me, I’ve blessed to have been invited to go with a group and I look forward to hopefully seeing some of you there. The thing is, I can’t really take advantage of the “what happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas” mentality because if I’m bad my better half will be with me and she’ll know the moment it happens!
Sincerely, Jack GriffithPresidentASHRAE Memphis Chapter
