Tim Writes Praise God we have managed to rent the vicarage and to do so within a week of advertising which enables us to meet our commitments to Holy Trinity Parish who had covered the Neale's up until the end of June. Perfect timing, couldn't be better! I have also done a bit of an inspection of the house which we know to be cold at times and have discovered the ceiling insulation could do with an improvement and that there is no underfloor insulation. Our plan is to insulate the floor and ceiling and to put down a moisture barrier under the floor as well. This should improve the warmth of the property no end. We are eligible for the new Government scheme and with some Diocesan assistance we should be able to complete the project relatively cheaply. Last week we talked in church about discipleship; recognising that disciples are not perpetual learners but rather like all apprentices reach a point where they need to become replicators. Everyone of us in church is there because someone discipled us. Someone invested time, energy and prayer into discipling us. The key question is who are we discipling? I believe very strongly that there is someone for everyone. Someone whom God would have us disciple. Someone we are praying for and investing time into with the intention that they too become a disciple of Jesus. Who is it for you? Take a moment now and in prayer ask God who it is and then intentionally think about how you are going to disciple that person. Tim Writes At vestry a few weeksago we discussed waysin which we might raisethe profile of missionswithin the parish. We

already give quite widely to missions asa parish but it often happens in thebackground without people being fullyaware of it. To this end we talked abouta number of possibilities and at theforefront was the idea of making therole of the Missions representativemore proactive and beyond just thework of the Anglican Board of Missionsand having a second person inCobden. Other ideas include aMissions page on the website profilingour missions work and highlightingspecial appeals, a possible regularemail update to parishioners with emailand regular reporting back spots in theservices and newsletters. Let us knowwhat you think.

Tim Writes A couple of Sundaysago we had a greatservice at Cobden. Wehad a number of visitorsand the message

provoked a lot of discussion. The topichowever of a Christian's response towar was a sensitive one for some andaroused a number of strong emotions, that were then expressed in quite astrong way in the service.I want to say quite clearly that I haveno problem with people feeling stronglyabout subjects, expressing differingopinions and even asking questionsbecause our church is and should be asafe place where people can feel freeto express themselves within thecontext of a loving and supportivecommunity. However I also want to say that safetygoes both ways and if in the strength ofthe opinions expressed others feelunsafe then that expression needs tobe re-thought. Expressing oneself isfine but we need to be careful that wealways do so in a way that doesn't hurtothers unnecessarily.

HOW WE GIVE TO MISSIONSIt was informative and encouraging tosee the overseas missions work weare supporting through the AnglicanBoard of Missions (ABM) a few weeksago. I suspect it was fairly newinformation for a lot of people and it gotme to thinking that an explanation andan update on how and what we give tomissions might be helpful.

Firstly, how do we give tomissions? Well for those usingenvelopes you'll notice that there aretwo spaces for recording your giving. One records the money you givetowards the general running of thechurch which come to around $85,000a year. The second space records anyextra giving you want to put direct

towards missions. Currently as achurch we plan on giving $2,640 to theABM. Sadly we just fell short of thistarget last year so if you haven't yetconsidered putting a little towardsmissions over and above your normalgiving can I encourage you to thinkabout it. Both amounts are creditedtowards your giving and result in a taxreceipt at the end of the financial year. Secondly how much do we give awayas a church and where does it go?$2,640 goes to ABM from the envelopesystem but we also give 10% of theprofit from pizza sales to ABM. Just asa note if we raise more than $2,640 wedon't keep any back, it all goes to ABM.We also give around $200 at Easter tomissions work in Israel and at Xmaswe give $4-500 towards Tear Fund andChristian World Service. We also give10% of the take from the Sharing Shedaway to Missions. $750 to Bible inSchools, $350 towards a sponsoredchild and $400 to orphans in Romania. So you can see that as a church wegive quite widely and generously.

Tim Writes Last Sunday's sungworship time at Cobdenas we made space forGod to speak into ourlives personally and

corporately was a powerful time. Therewere several words that spoke clearlyof God's love for us despite ourstruggles and of his desire to work inand through us to touch ourcommunities in the power of His Spirit, and not in our own strength. I lookforward to seeing how God will speakto us and through us in the future aswe work at becoming more attune tohis voice and will for our lives.Next Sunday will also be a sad day asit is Pam Honey's last Sunday with usfor the immediate future. Her andSteve leave shortly afterwards to go toAustralia to be near their boys andfamilies. It is hard to express howdeeply we will miss Pam.

ANGLICAN BOARD OF MISSIONSIt was encouraging and informative lastSunday to also see the Board ofMissions DVD which gave us a goodoverview of the Board's work and theway in which we as a Parish connect

with them financially and otherwise. We will be discussing at vestry how wemight make that connection moreactive and prominent.

Tim Writes The AGM went verywell. The parish is ingood heart and holdingit's own financially andhas managed to do

some major property improvementsand maintenance over the last year. However as I said in my report wemust not rest on our laurels. We havein effect created a great platform fromwhich to launch from and this year wedo want to look carefully at how we canbe more intentional with regards tooutreach and discipleship. So watchthis space.

At the AGM we also informallyratified the decision of vestry not toproceed with using the vicarage as acommunity hub. This means when theNeale's vacate the property we will rentit out. Our vestry and wardens remainunchanged from last year apart fromPam Honey who came off vestry andVerna Scott who has come on. A warmwelcome to Verna as she takes up thisleadership role in the Parish.

We are all saddenedby Barrie's death and wish life couldhave been easier for him over the lastfew years.I have been very encouraged by thenumber of people who have expressedto me how they have been quitetouched and moved by the MaundyThursday and Good Friday services wehave held. Being reflective styleservices how much you get from themdepends to a large degree on howmuch you put in; on the way in whichyou approach the service and openyourself up to the possibility of Godmeeting with you in a special way. AGM REPORTSFor all those involved in areas ofministry like the Sharing Shed, warden's, vicar, Sunday School, Biblein Schools etc. Please start puttingtogether your reports for the AGM.

MAORI NEW TESTAMENTThe Diocese have donated us a copyof a bi-lingual Maori New Testamentand it is in our library for anyone whomight like to have a look or borrow it.

VICAR'S VARIOUS ROLESSometimes people ask me whatexactly does a vicar do. Well today therole is incredibly varied and so Ithought I might just share a little on thediverse nature of the role. For exampleover Easter and the week following Ihave or will have planned, put together

and run six church services, taken afuneral and a wedding. Performed ablessing at a new Kiwi creche, takenan AGM, counselled a number of folk, interviewed for the Bishop two couplesapplying for ordination, applied for afunding grant, attended a Lion'sbreakfast, a Minister's Assoc meeting, helped with sound at a schoolproduction, clinically supervised aminister, done loads of admin, pickedup donated goods, done propertymaintenance, met with a charitabletrust and other folk regarding variousmatters, done a short overnight trampwith my children and more. So thereyou go, a snapshot of the vicar's job. Ihave to say though that although it isan incredibly diverse role it is also oneI find incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

Tim Writes As most of you realiseNicky and I live at 186Main South Rd inKaroro where we alsolook after "The Shed"

and run the youth project. This meansthat our vicarage is in effect surplus torequirements. Currently we make itavailable to the Neale family as astraight swap with Holy Trinity for useof 186 Main South Rd. Eventually thisarrangement will cease and we willhave to arrange for the property to berented. One possibility that has beenput to us for consideration is toconsider making the property availableto a trust which would use the propertyas a community hub for socialservices. There is obviously a lotinvolved in this ranging from resourceconsents, Diocesan approval, parishapproval, a memorandum ofunderstanding about what can and cannot go on, our ability to put it back intouse as a vicarage as required, ourmembership on the trust, how it relatesto the parish and so on. So much infact that it would probably not takeplace before the end of this year but it

is something for folks to talk and prayabout with each other as we consider ifthis the direction that God may betaking us. Please feel free to talk tovestry members, wardens or the vicarat any stage.

Tim Writes Life seems often tocome in stages. Birth, schooling, work, marriage, children andnow for Nicky and I the

leaving home of children and the deathof our last grandparent. At each stageyou face things you never had tobefore and yet strangely, like most Isuspect, we feel prepared and up tothe task because of previous lifeexperience and the knowledge thatprayer and faith undergirds much ofwhat we do. However the one thingthat does filter into your consciousthought more often as you get older isyour own mortality, the shortness of thetime remaining and the need to use itwell and wisely. It's not that as aChristian I fear death, in some respectsI look forward to the life to come, but inhaving said that there is the implicit acknowledgement that it will be thefinal stage and it heightens the need tomake the most of what remains of thislife. Paul said something similar in Philippians "For to me, to live is Christand to die is gain. If I am to go on livingin the body, this will mean fruitful

labour for me." So I feel increasinglycompelled to ensure I use the timeremaining wisely, on what reallymatters.

TAX REBATES AND GIVINGLast year the Govt changed the taxrebates on charitable donations.Previously you could claim a 1/3 ofwhat you gave up to a maximum of$630. Any giving above $1890 was noteligible for a rebate. The Govt realisinghow a cap on rebateable giving couldlimit giving to charity decided to doaway it altogether to encourage peopleto give more. So now you can claim a1/3 back no matter how much you give.Give $10,000 and you can get $3,333back instead of just $630. The newrules came into effect last year andpeople will already be benefiting fromthis, but to do so you need to be on theparish envelope system. See Tim if youwould like more info on this matter.

Tim Writes It would sometimesseem that Christianitymainly expresses itselfthrough the written andspoken word and yet

there is a rich Christian heritage in thearts as we caught a glimpse of withWayne Lorimer's message a fewweeks ago. Indeed the picture ofcreation in Genesis and many of thePsalms would tell us that the truthabout God can come in many creativeshapes and forms. In recent yearsthere has been a resurgence ofinterest in the arts from a Christianperspective especially with the adventof new forms of media andtechnologies. Here in NZ a trust hasbeen formed called the Chrysalis Trustto inspire, resource and networktogether artists and all those interestedin expressing faith through the arts. Iwould encourage anyone who has aninterest in this area to take a look atwww.csartspace.org.nz orwww.cs.org.nz. There are also somebrochures at the back of church.

Tim Writes It's incredible howquickly the year beginsto move. Already I amlooking at March tryingto find free weekends

for various activities. I need to makesure I stick to my own advice ofprioritising and balancing time thisyear. Rebekah is well and truly settledinto her flat in wellington. Her addressfor those who might want to write is F5,39 Boulcott St, Wellington Central. Sheis literally a 5min walk from everythingin the city centre. Her flat is on the 12thfloor and she gets great views of thecity. The four days I spent with herwere important as not only do I havepeace of mind about her coping but Ithink she does as well. We worked outbuses, budgeting, got her learner'slicense, got a library card, applied forpart time jobs, thought about churches, menu's and more. It was a busy butspecial time and I came away feelingthat she's going to be okay. Phew. We'll keep in touch of course via email, skype video conferencing, texting and

via the Freedom Plan on her cellphone. Ahh the wonders of technology.

Tim Writes Well it's upon me. Thefirst of our children isabout to leave home. How do I feel I askmyself. Well I have very

mixed emotions. I feel glad for her asshe moves into independence andadulthood and begins to follow herheart and passion. I feel proud of whoshe is and what she has already begunto achieve. I feel sad because she isleaving and I will miss her. I feel afraidbecause I am no longer there toprotect or guide her and it's a big badworld and I hope she will be all right. Iworry too that her faith may comeunder pressure from new friends andpeer groups and fall by the wayside. Sowhat can I do I ask myself. And theanswer I get is not much. I can prayand I will, but in the end I just have totrust that the job we have done so farhas established strong enoughprinciples and character to keep hersafe and to allow her to build her lifeupon a solid foundation. All I can say isthat it's tough being a parent. However

I also want to offer a big thank you tothe Christian community and to all herein Greymouth who have investedsomething of themselves in theforming of Rebekah.

Tim Writes I once read a bookcalled "BlessedGrieving" by JoanGuntzelman which wasa book of services,

meditations and stories to help peoplecope with loss. The book recognisedthat grief occurs with every loss in life, not just death, and helped people tocome to terms with it. One key loss wehave to face in life is ageing, as webecome less physically able, moreconfused, dependant on others and soon. It is a real loss and is to be grievedover like any other as we seek to cometo terms with it. I would recommend thebook to you and especially to any youknow who are struggling with ageing orother kinds of loss.

GAZA APPEALWe have been asked to advertise theattached emergency appeal for theAnglican Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. Thecurrent situation is extreme with littleprospect of a cease fire in theimmediate future. Bishop Suheil writes:

“During the best of times theyare stretched to their maximummeeting the medical needs of thispopulous community. Now, during thecurrent military conflict with its heavy

toll on human life and material, thehospital faces even greaterresponsibilities and challenges. Theresult is growing strain on the hospital'sresources. Every day since thebeginning of military operations, thehospital has received 20-40 injured orwounded patients. A large proportion ofthem require hospitalisation andsurgery. These patients are in additionto those with non-conflict-relatedillnesses. About one-fourth of thepatients are children.”

Please pray for a resolution tothis crisis that is acceptable to all. Ifyou would like to give to the work of theAnglican Hospital in Gaza then pleaseleave such giving in an envelopemarked "Gaza Appeal" and put it intothe collection plate next Sunday.

Tim Writes As I write this it's about12 hours to New Year'sEve. Typically this is atime to reflect on howthe previous year has

gone. What we've accomplished or notas the case may be. Often we willmake resolutions with the best ofintentions to improve ourselves, spendmore time with family or spouses etc. However I have discovered a truth thatintentions no matter how well intendedwill never be acted upon unless we domore than just resolve in our mind. Aresolution usually involves change andchange requires more energy than thestatus quo. It's about breakingingrained habits and establishing newones. And all of these things requiremore than just a momentary resolutionwhich often reflects more a desire tochange than a real decision to achieveit. For a resolution to succeed you haveto sit down and map out a strategy. The old adage that "they who fail toplan, plan to fail" is still true. You needto work out how you are going to enactyour resolution. What are you going todrop time wise. What changes will you

make to reinforce the new habit and soon. The reality is that we are all sobusy that most of us live on a day today basis to busy getting through life toactually look ahead and plot the coursethat might be best for us. So makeyour resolutions but also sit down andwork out how you are going to makethem happen. And remember thatputting things off until tomorrow is notjust a delay it is also time lost forever.Tomorrow actually never comes it isjust an excuse to avoid what you mayneed to do today, be it time with yourspouse, children, God etc. May 2009be a year of real and positive andGodly change for you all.

Tim Writes I have to say that I feelwe had a very goodAdvent season. InRunanga we have along established

tradition of how we handle AdventSundays and Christmas day, and onceagain it went well this year with goodnumbers, especially on Christmas day,of folk starting the day well byhonouring the birth of Christ. InCobden we are beginning to establisha new tradition of what we add to theChristmas tree each Sunday of Advent.I know many found it meaningful andgiven what we have learnt of the originof the Christmas tree itself the addingof the gold and silver balls on the firstSunday of advent takes on a new andspecial meaning too.Christmas Carols at the Hilton wasgreat this year with a larger backinggroup and some significant sharing ofwhat folk do at Christmas to make itspecial for them. Christmas Eve also went well withvideo, drama, children's play and aspecial dance by Kristie Aynsley.

Finally Christmas Day with two parishservices followed by a shared lunch atCobden saw us joining together withsome from the community for a time ofeating and talking. Overall it was a verymeaningful advent.

ORIGIN OF THE CHRISTMAS TREEOver the advent period I shared inmany locations the story of the origin ofthe Christmas tree which most of userect in our homes and other placesover this time of year. It was afascinating story packed full ofsymbolism so I thought I would share ithere and thereby provide you with awritten version. The tradition of theChristmas tree arose from the fir treedecorated with apples andrepresentations of communion wafersused in the Paradise play. Theparadise play was one of manyreligious dramas used to convey theChristian message in town squaresfrom the 11th to 15th centuries in

Germany. The tree was the only propon the stage and symbolised the treefrom which Adam and Eve ate in thegarden of Eden. The applesrepresented their fall from grace andthe wafers Jesus' redemption. Peopleinfluenced by this play began to erect afir tree decorated with apples andbiscuits in place of the wafers on Adamand Eve's Feast Day on the 24th ofDecember in their homes. The candlespossibly came from the custom ofhaving a large Christ candle lit onChristmas eve along with smallercandles on a nearby wooden pyramid.Over time people dropped the pyramidand added the candles to the tree.Similarly other decorations like the starrepresenting the star of Bethlehem, gifts under the tree from the wisemenand so on came to be incorporated intothe tradition. The coloured balls weplace on the tree today represent theapples, the lights represent thecandles and so on. Moravians broughtit to America 300 years ago and PrinceAlbert of Germany brought it toEngland when he married QueenVictoria 170 years ago, and so it

Tim Writes During last week someof the ministers of thetown met with Colin andGrace Shaw who arepart of a ministry that is

cataloguing the way in which localchurches in communities have begunto work together. Colin and Grace'srole is very much to encourage this asthey strongly believe that unity withinthe body of Christ locally is a key toseeing revival and even more fruitfulministry. Here in Greymouth there is ahigh degree of unity. The ministersrespect each other as colleagues, individual Christians often seethemselves as part of one big body andthere are good working relationshipson a number of projects. However wecan't rest on our laurels and while whatwe currently have is a good foundationI believe there is much more that couldbe done to leverage our unity. So prayfor the minister's association as theybegin to reflect on this.

Tim Writes Sometimes the waythings work out amazesme. A favourite Psalmof mine is Psalm 37:4"Take delight in the

Lord and he will give you the desires ofyour heart." It's a Psalm that speaks tome of how all things work together forgood for those who truly the Lord. Inother words when you are in a rightrelationship with God and genuinelydelight in being in that place and trulygive God lordship of your life thenthings just seem to happen for you, often without even asking for themdirectly in prayer. I have manyexamples of this from the past but Ialso have a very recent one I want toshare with you.

For years we have struggledwith ground water seepage in "TheShed" and have done many things toimprove the drainage and reduce theproblem to reasonable effect but we'venever ever fully solved it. A bettersolution was concreting a long strip ofopen soil next to "The Shed" to stopsoakage and to direct the run offbetter, and only last week I was

discussing this with Nicky. Well lastTuesday I was helping a mate do someconcreting and at the end of the jobthere was still about half a metre ofconcrete in the truck which would havebeen just washed out back at the yard.Struck with a sudden thought I asked ifthe driver could call in past "The Shed"on the way back to the yard and I couldoff load it. Well to cut along story shortthat's exactly what happened and thetwelve barrows of concrete was exactlywhat I needed at this stage. Praise theLord, God is good.

ADVENT SERVICESLast year we initiated a series ofAdvent traditions for Cobden revolving

around various set items we placedupon the Christmas tree. This year itbecomes a tradition as we repeat theexercise for the first time. Tradition canbe very powerful in that our energy canbe directed into the familiar rather thaninto the novel. Traditions are expectedand can therefore be looked forwardto. So can I encourage you to allow ournew traditions to become a way ofmaking Christmas more meaningful.

Pray that people will seek fullunderstanding before makingdecisions, that there would be genuineefforts towards healing, forgivenessand reconciliation, and that the widerChristian community in the town wouldnot end up being drawn into what'shappened but would remain prayerfullysupportive of all attempts towardsreconciliation.

It was also great to have anumber of well known clergy andfamilies with us on Sunday. Alan andChris Cummins and Mark and PipChamberlain. Two very special coupleswho hold special places in many of ourhearts.

It was also quite a moving timeas couples who hadn't been able to bewith us last weekend were able tocome forward for a marriage blessingincluding the aforementioned clergycouples.

Tim Writes Last Sunday was veryspecial and a numberof people havecommented to meabout how meaningful

the service was to them, especially atCobden as couples renewed theirmarriage vows. it is pretty clear thatmarriage is an institution under threatin our society and one that is malignedoften. Yet every statistical and socialindicator I have looked atdemonstrates powerfully that marriageis by far the best model for adultrelationships, for raising children, andin general is the best place to be if youwant to be healthy, wealthy and happy.it would seem that people valueindividuality over the collective goodand as a result much of our society issuffering the consequences.

My hope from last Sunday isthat you will stand tall and say "I amproud and glad to be married." Thatyou're not tied into some old fashioned, past it's use by date institution butinstead have made a very wise choice.I also hope that you now feel that you

have some information andammunition to back up that claim.

Tim Writes On Wednesday a windstorm ripped throughCobden and elsewherecausing a mass ofdestruction that

included some of our church property. The Cobden vicarage lost half its roof, five trees, parts of five fences, agarden shed, log fire flu, hotwatercylinder overflow pipe, electricity, andphone. The church lost its sign, twowindows, two skylights, guttering, downpipes, power and got a hole in thewall. The garage has some dentedwalls and St Thomas' had one sheetof iron lifted.

Since then we have been intouch with insurance assessors andtradespeople and every aspect ofdamage is now scheduled for repair. However what impressed me morewas the bunch of volunteers whoanswered the call to arms on theThursday and helped remove therubbish and tidy up the trees andgrounds. Apart from the damage to thebuildings and some sawdust you would

almost never know we had been hit. Itwas a great effort and I and the parishare very grateful.

We are also very grateful to theefforts of the fire service who puttarpaulins on our roof and to those whoworked so hard to restore power, phone and took away the debris fromthe storm. It truly showed somethingabout the strength of the Coast'scommunity spirit. Well done everyoneand thank you.

We've also received messagesof support over the disaster fromRodney Dunlop, the Gribbles and theButton's

Tim Writes I have been veryencouraged by themany answers toprayer that people havebeen experiencing in

the Parish of late. It shows anincreased sensitivity to the Holy Spiritin our praying, and an awareness thatGod desires to be involved in bringingabout change in people's lives andsituations. Personally I was veryencouraged by Wayne Dalzell'saccount of the vision of Christ hereceived the Sunday before his trip toChristchurch hospital. God was sayingvery strongly that he was going to bewith Wayne throughout that time away.and he was.

As Nicky Gumbel notes in theAlpha course not all our prayers areanswered but far more are answeredthan if we never prayed.

Tim Writes As many of you willknow Bishop Richard isat Lambeth Palace inLondon for the 10yearly gathering of

Bishops from around the world. It is agathering filled with tension over theincreasing divide between orthodoxyand liberalism. Orthodoxy is defined asthose who hold to the truth of thedoctrines expressed in the historicalNicene and Apostolic creeds,Liberalism does not. The divide hasbeen brought to a head by theordination of Gene Robinson aself-declared homosexual in America.

This is no small issue and thereis a strong possibility that it could leadto an eventual split in the church.Personally, unless there is genuinerepentance in the liberal church thatleads to clear action and in reality trueconversion, I think such a split will beinevitable and in reality a good thing forthe church long term. So please prayfor Lambeth and for Bishop Richard.

Tim Writes Christianity is not just aSunday thing as we allknow but sometimesthe way we organiseourselves can kind of

reflect that. This is why I really enjoyour sharing time at Cobden on Sundaymornings as it both raises theexpectation that God is at work duringthe week and it also gives people anopportunity to share what God hasbeen doing in their lives. Speaking upthough can be a bit daunting andsometimes we feel we have nothing toshare but can I encourage everyonethat you probably do have somethingto share. It might not be a dramaticanswer to prayer. It might simply be ascripture verse that spoke to you fromyour Bible readings during the week, itmight be something you read in yourdevotional material. It might be ananswer to prayer. It might be someoneclose coming to faith. It might be theway you were able to be of help orcomfort to someone in a spot oftrouble. So don't be afraid to speak up

on Sunday mornings. We're all keen tohear how God has been at work inyour life.

Tim Writes Nicky and I are startingsomething new in linewith the move frominvesting time andenergy into the parish

infrastructure to that of the people. Wehave started this month having one ortwo couples or individuals around forlunch after church as a way ofdeepening existing relationships andgetting to know people.

Last Sunday Josie and Garry, and Carolyn and Brian joined us for alight lunch followed by a pleasantafternoon of conversation andsocialising. So watch out, you may findyourself being approached for alunchtime invitation sometime in thenear future. It's a long term initiativebecause with the Parish Lunch on thelast Sunday of the month and Blackballon the second Sunday there's only twoSundays a month we can use.

NEW PHONE NUMBERThe old parish phone number of 7687667 has been disconnected. We hadkept it for a while with a diversion toTim and Nicky's home number but withMarge moving out and Stephen

wanting to keep his old number itseemed an appropriate time to finallylet it go. So if you have been ringing768 7667 or have it on speed dial orsomething like that you will need toalter it to Tim and Nicky's homenumber 768 9605.

SUCCESSFUL TRAININGWe've run a number of trainingsessions of late to up-skill people intheir various roles on Sundaymornings. Last Saturday we had ClaireHolley lead us in a basic counsellingskills workshop for those involved inprayer ministry. Many commented tome on how helpful they found it. Thenon Tuesday we ran a training sessionon the sound desk and the use of thenew computer to record sermons. Itwas a very enjoyable as well asinstructive time. Finally there was asession for intercessors on Sat but itoccurred after this newsletter went toprint so I cannot comment on how itwent. So thanks to those who led thetraining and for those who turned up. Itwas much appreciated.

LIONSYou'll see that on Thursday that theLion's Changeover night is listed. Thisis because I have decided to join theLions Club of Greymouth as a way ofbeing more involved in the community.I know many of the members anywayand it seemed like an appropriate thingto be involved in.

STEVE APIRANA AND DEREK LIND Are coming to Greymouth. Tues 24thJune 7.30pm, Holy Trinity Centre.Steve and Derek - great mates andentertainers - have for many yearsthrilled audiences with concerts thatare full of laughs, great music and funfor the whole family. "Its inevitable" that

PRAYER MEETINGS AND REVIVALPeople often pray for revival wanting tosee God's Spirit poured out in powerand people coming to faith in theirdroves. Sadly they will be disappointedbecause history has shown thatcommunity revival always begins withpersonal revival. It has to start with thechurch and secondly because it isalways undergirded with prayer. Thefirst sign of revival will always be anincrease in numbers at the churchprayer meeting. See you Thursday!

Tim Writes A telling judgementfrom the High Courtwas delivered thisweek, finding that theAbortion Supervisory

Committee (ASC) has "misinterpretedits' functions and powers under theabortion law," and that "there is reasonto doubt the lawfulness of manyabortions" in New Zealand.

Right to Life, a pro-life charity, has taken the ASC to Court allegingthey have been failing to fulfil theirduties in ensuring the law is interpretedas intended. Under New Zealand lawan abortion is illegal unless it takesplace with the authorisation of twocertifying consultants. The mostcommonly cited ground is that thepregnancy would result in a seriousrisk to the mental health of the mother. In 2006 17,732 abortions, 98.9 percentof all abortions, were performed on thisground. Justice Miller, the Judgehearing the case, agreed that at themoment in New Zealand we seem toeffectively have abortion on demand, with figures showing that somecertifying consultants decline very few

or no abortions whatsoever. JusticeMiller held that our abortion laws showthat "the unborn child has a claim onthe conscience of the community...and that our abortion laws are beingabused, and inadequately supervised."

"The abortion law certainlyasserts a state interest in protectingthe unborn child, and not merely aninterest in ensuring that women mayhave safe and legal abortions."

This is a landmark decision andwhile not denying there are some validgrounds for abortion it would certainlyappear that in New Zealand we haveabortion on demand at present.Hopefully this judgement will pave theway for a review of our current abortionlaws.
