Dear All,

I have been involved very closely with the Indian Orthopaedic Association (from 1997) as member the executive

committee, chairman of the Implant committee and superspeciality training committee , than as Editor Indian

Journal of Orthopaedics and now as President. This has been a wonderful opportunity for which I thank you all and for

electing me to the coveted post of President of our body.

I strongly believe the foundation of any academic body rests in its capability to provide a high quality of academic

atmosphere to all its members at any time and stage that they may desire.

We had a great initiative celebrating the Bone & Joint day on 4th of August 2012. It was heartening to note how our

community got together to educate common men regarding bone health and stimulate them to participate in bone

related issues .We can achieve lot more with a little more sustained efforts for few years. This year, the bone and joint

day was also celebrated in a very enthusiastic manner in all part of India.

Newsletter is the most important communication channel between Indian Orthopaedic Association and all members.

This not only gives information but is a channel to make members well informed to get positive input during

deliberations. Please enjoy reading the newsletter.

Once again, I take this opportunity to thank all of you for the tremendous confidence and continuous support in all my

endeavors as your president.

Best regards to one and all .

Hoping to see you in Hyderabad soon.

Yours sincerely,

(Prof. Anil K.Jain)

President- Indian Orthopaedic Association.

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Delhi.

This is the last newsletter which I am bringing out as Honorary Secretary of IOA.

Looking back I feel satisfied that I have been able to do justice to this particular responsibility. The outline as well as

the complete plan of the newsletter has been a more reader friendly change. I have tried to incorporate news from all

corners of India and efforts are being made that every chapter gets due representation in the newsletter.

I have received wholehearted support from the staff of the IOA House and complete executive all the time and I

express my sincere gratitude to all of them.

Since the last newsletter, few activities have been added. Notables among them are celebration of Bone and Joint Day

throughout India and PG courses in different parts of the country. This year the main focus of the President, IOA has

been to improve the academic activities of IOA as well as to popularize the Bone and Joint Day throughout the

Country. I have the feeling that both aims have been reasonably met.

Once again I thank all the people for the help provided.

With regards,

Yours truly,

(Dr. Sudhir K. Kapoor)

Hon.Secretary, IOA

My dear seniors & colleagues.

I have come very close to Indian Orthopaedic Association to know the basic working of IOA .You have given me a

wonderful opportunity by electing me to the coveted post of president- Elect 2013 and serve you all, and I am thankful

to all the members.

The Indian orthopaedic Association has come to this level by the efforts of seniors and my predecessors. The high

level of academic atmosphere is created during the IOACON. This year a academy wing of IOA has been created to

look after the scientific program of the IOACON, and to formulate the polices in Academic matter for IOA

4th August (the day that the IOA chapter was signed ) was declared as the Indian Bone & joint Day. To Commemorate

this event, I request all the state chapters to organize few activities in their state. I request all of you to operate one

patient free of cost whatever minor or major surgery. All the state chapter should produce posters depicting the Bone

and joint Day celebration and send these posters to all hospitals in their town and city & keep these poster in OPD and

main gate of hospital so that, public awareness should follow “stronger Bones – stronger India.”

This year there is election of President- elect, vice presidents & Secretary. This year last time, there will be Ballet paper

as well as on line voting you will be surprised to know that only 31% voting has been done. Ballot papers are reached to

every member but members are not taking 2 minutes time to fill the ballot paper and drop in the nearest post office. You

do not have to spend the postal ticket, Those who have computer, they can vote on line.

May I request every member to send their new permanent address, email and landline and mobile numbers to IOA

office so that it will be easier to send them ballet paper or passward for online voting. Spare 2 minutes and do the

justice for IOA election.

Orthopaedics is a vast subject .Every month there is new technique coming up. Not only for juniors but even for

seniors there are workshops seminars and scientific programs, which one must attend. IOA has huge number of

fellowships which one must utilize them. Now most of the state chapters are giving opportunities to conduct

conferences, seminars and other scientific activities so that a person can easily attend and learn. Learning is a long

process for an orthopaedic surgeon. Therefore I shall say that “continue learning to serve better to the society”. The

theme of they year 2015 is “continue learning to serve better to the society”.

Report of Orthopaedic Research and Basic science Committee

02-10-2014

Prof. Sudhir Kapoor

Hon. Secretary, Indian Orthopaedic Association

New Delhi

Dear Sir

Several suggestions on how to promote research in Orthopaedics, awarding research grant, IOA Oration / Award,

instituting a session on basic science and research methodology at all the level of conferences etc. were discussed.

The members appreciated that in IOACON 2013 at Agra, a good time slot for the lectures / award papers was allotted

for this sub specialty. A good number of papers were presented in the session mainly by young orthopaedic members.

The invited lectures from faculty from India and abroad and symposium on research methodology was the highlight of

the sessions. There was good interaction from audience.

The members welcomed the good number of paper presentations and excellent lectures on the subject related to basic

science and research in the Indian Arthroplasty Association and ASSI conferences, WIROC and many other

conferences. The most significant achievement of our committee was starting a session on Basic Science and

Research in all the state level conferences of IOA. Secretaries of all the chapters were communicated by secretary IOA

to include a free paper and lectures session on the subjects related to research and basic sciences in their annual

conferences. We received the report from various chapter secretaries regarding start of such sessions. Few state

chapters have started Research grant and awards too. In the forthcoming IOACON 2014 at Hyderabad, an Oration has

been planned on Basic Science and Research topic. I am happy to announce that this year IOA is awarding a grant to

the projects submitted for research grant.

Lastly I appeal all the chapter secretaries, IOA members to inform regarding their individual achievements or

achievements at chapter level in reference to their work on Basic science and research, so the same can be highlighted

in the report. This can be an award, published papers in the journal, chapter in the book, fellowship, invited lectures,

organization of conference, a slot allotted in the conference etc.

The emphasis this year is on the response/participation of state to central activity suggested/proposed by IOA

(communications ,agenda and programs) and needless to say we had a fantastic co-ordination.

The AK GUPTA trophy for best chapter to have 10 points extra for RESPONSE/PARTICIPATION of state to central

activity.

As decided in executive meeting Team CSRC wrote to Dr Ajay Agrawal regarding his letter. Dr Agrawal did not

furnish details as desired by Dr Deepak Shah to make a conclusive report.

The president IOA made me member of a team, which is working to finalise Abott CME to be started very soon.

2014 has been a very fruitful year for the Inland Fellowship Committee. For the second consecutive year we have received record number of applications (37), a very healthy sign for the association.

Few glitches are still being faced as application forms are still not being submitted in the authorised format which leads to confusion while tallying results. A large number of applicants are asking to be allotted the Centres for fellowship by name. Inland Fellowship committee only awards the fellowships and not particular centres, a work which needs to be done by the fellow themselves. All applicants are requested to use typed copies of the latest format to apply which is also available on the web page ioaindia.org for download.

A need is being seriously being felt to start “Centres of Excellence” where senior members should volunteer to take these fellows and impart them with skills so that we grow symbiotically. IOA needs help of members who can volunteer to train the awardees.

List of Applicants for the various Fellowships under the Committee are as follows:

Personal Profile statement

It is customary for all international fellowships to write a personal Profile statement. A personal profile statement is a

vital part of the candidate’s application for Fellowship & is his introduction to the selection committee..it is a short

statement outlining his personal characteristics in his own word. It tells the reader what kind of a person he is, the

attributes and qualities that he posses and the experience he has & should demonstrate his humanity & that he is

capable of doing things & can inspire others around him to join in those efforts. An excellent personal profile

statement must be relevant, short & to the point approx 100-200 words and contain only positive points. A personal

statement is not an academic paper with the Applicant as the subject, a resume in narrative form or plea or justification

for the scholarship. Most importantly, a personal statement should be authentic. So the candidate should take pains &

plan out a proper personal statement.

Convenor was Dr Rajeev Sharma and the theme was “Knee – Inside Out”.

About 250 delegates and faculty members deliberated on various aspects of knee including trauma, arthroscopy,

arthroplasty, and tumours. We have realized that region wise subspeciality meetings appeal more to delegates and a

trend has been established.

As per plan, various institutes and hospitals were asked to celebrate the National Bone and Joints week by organizing

public awareness lectures, BMD camps, free opds and surgeries. All over Delhi, about 48 centers participated in this

event benefitting about 10,000 people.

Dr J Maheshwari , national coordinator for 3rd August social activities had planned a knee joint walk to highlight the

handicap associated with knee arthritis. Idea was to highlight the mobility gained after total knee replacement surgery.

I have attended the IOA foreign fellowship at Western Australia University hospital, Perth. During fellowship I have

visited Sir Charles Gairdner hospital, Perth orthopaedics institute and Hollywood hospital at Perth and work along

with Professor Richards carrie smith and Professor David wood. It was nice opportunity to work with them and learn

latest technology of joint replacement, navigation, custom made implants and application of computerised 3D model

in designing implant and specific instruments. None the less it is nice to work in a clean sophisticated environment. I

would like to express my sincere thanks to the Indian orthopaedics association for giving me the opportunity to

enhance and exchange the knowledge and expertise through this fellowship.

Report of IOA Depuy Johnson and Johnson Fellowship

Dr. Aditya Krishna Mootha

MBBS (Gold Medallist)

First of all I would like to thank our esteemed Indian Orthopedic Association (IOA) for considering me as an eligible

candidate for this prestigious IOA-DEPUY J&J INTERNATIONAL ARTHROPLASTY FELLOWSHIP. It would be

mistake on my part if I do not mention my mentors Dr. Mandeep Singh Dhillon, Dr. S.S. Gill and Dr. Guravareddy

among many others who had a deep impact on me .

I availed this oppurtunity and pursued the fellowship in the Adult reconstruction division, Singapore General Hospital

(SGH), Singapore headed by Assoc. Prof. Yeo Seng Jin. He is so humble and ground to earth surgeon. I am extremely

happy for the hospitality provided by him and his team that I felt as a part of their team.

As I am there only for a short span of 2 weeks (Oct 6th – Oct 19th 2014), I am accomodated into their daily Operation

Theatre schedules so that I get maximum exposure to the their advanced techniques. I found a great mentor and teacher

in Dr. Darren Tay Keng Jin with whom I worked most of the days. My intention to learn recent advances in navigation

guided TKA is fulfilled as I am fortunate to observe more than 15 cases of navigation guided TKAs during the short

span of 14 days. Exactech GPS, Brain Lab DASH, Zimmer I Assist are a few systems to mention. I am very happy to

learn that these new generation of navigation systems are so user freindly and do not need huge space occupying

gadgets in the operation rooms. I am very thankful to Dr. Darren Tay for his patient training that allowed me to get

accustomed to these new systems.

I hope that I apply the new things I learnt at singapore to use back home. I once again thank IOA and SGH for providing

me this wonderful oppurtunity and making my fellowship a memorable one.

Fellowship report of IOA-Dartmouth Hitchcock Fellow, 2014

Dr.Vishal Kumar

At the outset, I would like to take the opportunity to extend my thanks and gratitude to our esteemed association, The

IOA, its foreign fellowship committee and the executive members who found me worth and confided in me for one of

the most prestigious foreign fellowships of IOA.

Gratefulness overweighs thanksgiving in me for Dr. Dilip Kumar Sengupta and his whole team with special reference

to Dr. Dipak and Dr. Kathryn to name a few who treated me as their brother and made my stay and learning a lucid

experience. My fellowship guide Dr. Sengupta left no stone unturned in making my stay comfortable and learning an

easy and pleasant experience. He even took care of our minor tit bits like locker keys, security card, daily essentials

etc.to list a few.

New Hampshire was a perfect blend of fellowship and fun for me. I was fortunate to have my co-fellow, Dr. Sarvdeep

from the same institute as mine (PGI, Chandigarh), who is my mentor and more than an elder brother.

I had a wide exposure of spine surgeries and clinical cases including trauma, tumor, infection and a wide array of

deformity.

An integrated, comprehensive team approach right from pre-operative planning, theatrical execution and vigilant post

operative care lies in the roots of optimal outcome. Each and every hospital personnel is inherently bestowed upon

when and which act to commence and follow. There are many a things to be learnt from this fellowship programme

right from dealing with patients in outpatients, selecting surgical cases, the tips and tricks of surgery, means and

methods to achieve optimal functional outcome, avoidance of surgical traps, vivid and varied clinical case

presentations and this four weeks time fails too short for these. Shared decision making, functional rehabilitation

programme are the new concepts for any individual as well as any Institution to imbibe and grow upon.

It will be treacherous if my report does not mention special thanks to Mr. Ramesh Pandey, IOA executive secretary and

Mrs. Tracy and Mrs. Kim, executive secretaries with Dr. Sengupta for their unconditional support right from

application to final arrangements, without which this fellowship would have remain a dream for me.

The discipline, respect for the patients and regard for this profession itself are some of the values learnt, which need to

be inculcated, followed and cherished life long.

Hope, I inculcate these worthy values taken from here in my routine practice for a better patient outcome.
