♡ SPEAKING FROM THE HEART ♡

Spring is announcing its presence with its brilliant blue sky and radiant sunshine, helping to provide the impetus and motivation to rediscover our forgotten passions, desires and inner truths. During spring’s early days, as we recover from the relative isolation of this past winter, we may be reminded of that forgotten plant which abandoned and untended during the colder weather has curled its leaves up tightly seeking solace and comfort from within. Undernourished and devoid of warmth, the once green leaves lay brown, withered and

drooping in the parched earth. Upon removal of the dried and shriveled leaves, one sees evidence of new growth and the possibility of new life.

The lessons from that shrunken lonely plant apply to human relationships. Isolated and alone in a quiet house allows a blanket of sadness to envelop us. Loneliness can darken our world – or, like that emerging new leaf – we can begin to uncover the delight of daily connections with others. Each newly unfolding day offers untold opportunities to celebrate life and ourselves. The exploration of new landscapes can open the door to novel experiences that we only previously had imagined…if we allow ourselves to risk enough and take that leap of faith. Let us not postpone openings for happiness. Join a group that stimulates your mind, stretches your body, soothes your spirit, and allows you to feel joy in that process. As we begin to peel away the outer layers of winter’s clothing, we likewise begin to shed the doubts and uncertainties that shield us from new experiences. There is no better time than today to take that step towards a new adventure.

A rich happy life necessitates reaching out to really listen and hopefully, to be listened to; to give and receive affection, support and understanding; and to be an active participant in the daily nuances of an ever evolving life. May we each find our way to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our own special and unique qualities, and experience the satisfaction and fulfillment of our previously unexplored dreams. Let us dance together in the sunshine of life and plant new seeds of potential and vision in the fertile ground of human relationships.

With love, Marian

Please enjoy an extra slice of whole wheat bread with a serving of peanut butter and grape jelly with your lunch today (Monday, April 4th)

Monks baked thin strips of dough into the shape of a child’s arms folded in prayer. Add a little salt, and Voila!....the pretzel industry was born. So have a pretzel….dip it in mustard or eat it soft and warm. Share pretzel stories with your friends. Or just enjoy!

MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR Center Director's Message

Spring has finally sprung! We get to enjoy daylight a little longer, the days are a little warmer, and the sweet sounds of birds chirping outside our windows. SPRINGTIME! What does it mean to you? Just image the sweet fragrance of flowers blooming and the sun lightly kissing your skin while enjoying a delightfully nutritious meal here at SNAP! There are so many reasons why spring makes people happy. Here are a few more reasons to enjoy spring while it lasts! The warmer weather allows us to stay out longer so we get more fresh air which is known to boost energy levels and lower stress levels.

1. We can exercise outdoors! We are no longer confined to a stuffy room. We can have some of our exercise classes outside. Now here’s your chance to join our Walking Club! (Please see Nina or Mindy for details)

2. We can eat straight from the source! Spring time brings lots of fruits and vegetables to our gardens and local farms.

3. Time to shed those layers! You can trade in your winter coat for a light sweater or jacket. (Who wants the extras bulk anyway?) Whatever it is about spring that brings a smile to your face, enjoy it! We only have a couple of months before it’s summer. Warmest Regards - Nina Bhola

A MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD

At the Advisory Board meeting held on March 21st, we had hoped to discuss the new building and a possible opening date. We spoke about the Go Fund Me page now up online and hope to institute interest in it from others. The money is needed to complete construction of the new center. About $950,000 is needed to finish the center with state of the art equipment.

As chairperson for the Fundraising Committee, I thank those who assisted at the last jewelry sale. Board members Elsie Grossman, Nancy Schwarz and I, as well as Kiki and Lori from the jewelry class volunteered time to help out. The Thursday Jewelry class had voted for all of the proceeds to go the SNAP building fund. Thank you all for your generosity. We donated over $600 to the building fund. We will have another jewelry sale on May 2nd, the Monday prior to Mother’s Day.

We also discussed Linda Nadel’s semi-retirement. Linda is working part time in the month of April. We will miss her and the board wishes her well in her future endeavors.

Nina is working hard to please everyone with new programs and ideas. Please attend as many programs as you can to learn new things. Coming up on 4/15 is a Paint Night for friends and family to attend and the cost per person will be $20. It will be a fundraising event.

We discussed suggestions and ideas presented to the board members and will seek resolutions to any current items discussed. Any new center members having problems adjusting to the activities at the center, please feel free to ask the board members for guidance. We welcome your input.

Carole Vahey, President

Something new, exciting and very innovative is coming to SNAP in the coming weeks. It’s called VIRTUAL SENIOR CENTER! SNAP’s homebound seniors, as well as senior center clients will be able to participate in classes all over the globe via computer and television. Already in use at Self Help’s Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center, SNAP will be partnering with them to bring this 21 century program to SNAP. Watch for details!

SNAP SAYS THANK YOU This space is reserved for those people wishing to give their warmest and most sincere thanks to their friends, family members or anyone you care about. Perhaps you would like to wish someone a special birthday or thank them for a thoughtful gesture. For a donation to SNAP, tell us what you’d like to say. Linda Nadel – Just a note of thanks to all of you at SNAP for

your well wishes and thoughtfulness. I retire from SNAP with a heavy heart after almost 22 years. Please know that I will miss our day to day contact, but I have a lot of wonderful memories of my time here. You haven’t seen the last of me! I expect to visit and to be of help for the move to the new building. Thank you again.

PLEASE REMEMBER SNAP IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST

There are many ways to give to charity and good causes. Bequests can serve as a memorial to honor the memory of a loved one, or establish a fund for a particular aspect of SNAP. Bequests are often a final communication one has with descendants, a way of demonstrating your values and setting an example for your heirs. A planned gift or bequest to SNAP helps you to determine your legacy in a truly meaningful way and have a profound impact on the future of the organization. Please remember SNAP so that we can continue to provide important services to others in our community. If you have any questions, you may call Ronald J. Schwartz, Elder Law Attorney at 718-347-6100.
