Interview

Prof. Paul COOPER

It is our honor to interview Professor Paul William COOPER, Chair Professor of Social-Emoonal Development and Educaon, and Associate Vice-President (Quality Assurance).

Academic careers with “responsive” and student-centered values A key theme of Professor COOPER’s educaonal philosophy is an emphasis on “responsiveness to students’ needs” as an educator and researcher. For instance, he stated “I was always interested in how young children and adolescents perperceive schooling…The concerns that they have about schools are very instrucve,…we can oen learn more about how to improve schools by looking at the schools through eyes of the children.” These values or philosophies have strongly influenced his teaching, research and community services since late 1970s when he started his career in educaon as a school teacher in a mainstream secondary school in the United Kingdom.

Professor COOPER’s second job was as a teacher in a residenal school for children with emoonal and behavioural difficules and simultaneously he did his Ph.D. studies. He has a parcular interest in the ways in which ffeelings of emoonal insecurity affect social and educaonal engagement. In order to deeply understand the causes of the students’ emoonal problems, Professor COOPER always sat down and calmly talked to the students. With this method, he oen found a posive side of these students, as he stated, “…they are oen quite reasonable people, with very real concerns and fears.” Consequently, Professor COOPER susuggests, in his academic output, that the most effecve teachers in schools are less interested in telling students what to do and more interested in learning from their students. This involves discovering their talents, helping them to think about the world they live in and be acve in making a posive contribuon to their communies. PProfessor Cooper admits that it is not easy being this kind of teacher. “Balance is very important: honesty and challenge are no use without support and empathy, and support and empathy are no use without honesty and challenge. Real teaching and learning are difficult and challenging acvies. They are much harder work than simply passively aending non-interacve lectures! They are also much more rrewarding.”

Aer ge ng his Ph. D. degree, Prof. COOPER took a job in Oxford University as a research fellow. He was parcularly impressed by what an interviewee, a twelve or thirteen-year old girl said about her emoonal response to schooling and how it affected her educaonal engagement:“ She said: ‘Well, I used to do that (pu ng up hands in classes) but the teacher either ignored me or would ridicule my answer, so I don’t parcipate in that way anymore.’ ” Professor COOPER found that learning and teaching were always at their most effecve when there was a strong sense of emoonal safety and students felt that they were in a supporve environment. The more supporve the eenvironment the more willing students were to take on learning challenges and stretch themselves socially, emoon-ally and intellectually.

Suggesons to teachers and policy makers on inclusive educaon in Hong KongAs an expert of special and inclusive educaon, Professor COOPER pointed out the current problems in Hong Kong schools with corresponding suggesons. For instance, the teachers are stressed by contradicng situsituaons as they are required to produce high achievements but to include students whose special educaonal needs may limit their achievements. This big contradicon usually causes a very “depressing situaon that makes teachers somemes feel they are not succeeding.” In terms of this situaon, he suggested teachers to seek support from their colleaguesand the edueducaon bureau. Professor COOPER also provided suggesons to the policy makers. As he suggested, “make sure that proper good support and advice is available which are in various forms, for instance, release resources to provide specialist support for inclusive educaon. There is, for example, a wealth knowledge and skills in the special school sector in Hong Kong that should be drawn on to support inclusion.”

Furthermore, Professor COOPER is taking up significant roles in the field. He is not only a supervisor of Ph.D students in HKIEd but also a Vising Professor teaching and researching in the European Centre for EEducaonal Resilience of University of Malta. He is also the founding co-chair of the European Network for Social-Emoonal Competence in Children (ENSEC), and a UK Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the Brish Psychological Society. In 2011 he was honoured by being made Life Long Vice President of the Social Emoonal and Behavioural Difficules Associaon, which is a long established and leading UK charity concerned with children’s social emoonal ddevelopment and mental health needs.

Prolific and significant academic achievementsIn addion to the hands-on caring for students in his teaching, research and community services, Professor COOPER is also competent in these dimensions. He has completed numerous research projects funded by both governments and other instuons as well as publishing in academic journals constantly. He is currently an editor of world-class academic journals such as “Emoonal and Behavioural Difficules” and “Internaonal Journal of Emoonal Educaon”.

3

University vision-oriented administrave jobs of Quality AssuranceApart from being a caring and competent educator and researcher, Professor COOPER is also the current Associate Vice President in Quality Assurance in HKIEd. According to him, a raonale of an educaonal instuon’s quality assuassurance was stated in a responsive and student-centered way “making sure that we are doing the best we can for the students in order to make sure that they are ge ng a quality experience” and hence, “it’s parcular referring to the teaching and learning dimension.” From his point of view, the significance of high quality of teaching and learning is to ensure the instuon’s constant improvement and sustainability. MoMore specifically, the quality assurance is performed according to the university vision: educaon-plus. On one hand, the non-educaonal courses are introduced which have shown a posive feature that the instute is developing; on the other hand, it is emphasized by Professor COOPER that the importance of educaon as a disciplinary domain itself should not be neglected in addion to embedding educaon in relaon to other disciplines, which are also very imporimportant so they have an equal value for contribung to students’ development. “[ QA] is never finished, you have to be constantly finding ways of improving; that’s what real quality assurance is about, it’s connuous self-evaluaon and improvement”, stated by Professor COOPER.

Like many of my fellow Hong Kong citizens, I‛ve studied and worked in the commercial sector for over 10 years, without any real knowledge or experience of the Education sector, so I really don‛t know why I suddenly decided to spend my future life in this unrelated area.

In September of 2009, I attended the first lecture of HKIED‛s Master of Education programme, 90% of my classmates were teachers from Kindergartens, Primary Schools and Secondary Schools. All of the theory, technique and vocabulary were very strange to me initially. Thank God, Professor LO, Sing Kai was my first Lecturer, he‛s a wonderful teacher and he‛s given me valuable support, opinions and suggestions every time I‛ve faced a challenging problem. He totally changed my original concept of suggestions every time I‛ve faced a challenging problem. He totally changed my original concept of Education, teachers and research. According to the “Thank you card” I gave him after my graduation to Master of Education, “The Best Gift” for him was a photo of both of us at “my graduation to Doctor of Education”.

Now I‛m the first year‛s student of Doctor of Education, once again, God arranged another wonderful teacher for me, my principle supervisor - Professor LIM, Cher Ping, who is teaching and leading me in the right direction.

Of course besides Prof. LO and Prof. LIM, other Lecturers, my classmates, my family, my boss and Of course besides Prof. LO and Prof. LIM, other Lecturers, my classmates, my family, my boss and colleagues from Hong Kong, the UK and China, all give me the very important support during this long journey towards becoming a qualified researcher or scholar.

Now that the first year is almost completed, it‛s time for me to put all of my effort into my thesis and the final target point seems to get closer and closer, but “The Best Gift” will be achieved very soon. I would therefore like to express all of my thanks to all of the important people who‛ve helped me on my long journey.

It is my great honor to work for Graduate School for five months right after getting my PhD degree from HKU. As a new graduated doctor, I feel close to our postgraduate students here in HKIEd. The study journey they are undergoing is the right one I have just gone through.

During the past five months, when students passed their qualifying presentations, presentations, when students wrote up and submitted their theses, and when students passed their oral examinations, I also felt very cheerful for them. Before those exciting moments, I know, they must have been worked very hard and overcome various difficulties.

To cultivate a good research environment for supporting postgraduate students, students, Graduate School has recently organized the 3rd Postgraduate Summer School and Research Conference. It is very encouraging to see our students actively attended the seminars, presented their research and exchanged their ideas with other scholars and students. We will try to provide more platforms for postgraduate students to develop their research skills.

Like the process of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly, the academic journeyjourney is accompanied with thorns and difficulties, but more attractively, it is also full of courage and hope. With their persistent efforts on critical thinking, reading, writing and practicing, I believe our students will become distinguished teachers and scholars in the near future.

Maybe many years later, the PhD experience in HKIEd will be the most memorial time of my life.

There is no doubt I love this campus. The school is beautiful which is surrounded with trees and flowers and the teaching facilities and equipments are sufficient. Among all of them, the library and swimming-pool are my favorite.

What impressed me most is the high quality of the staff here. Once I lost my bag includingincluding wallet, ID, money and bank cards carelessly, I could not find it anywhere and finally I registered in the security centre without hope. While two days later, I received a call to get my things back. Some staff found my bag and returned to the security centre. Nothing lost even one penny. The campus gives me a feeling of security.

I have to say the PhD Study is not easy. Sometimes you will feel lonely during the research as you do not know whether what you have done is right or wrong. SometimesSometimes you work so hard only to be told useless. The “pains and gains” seems not work here. Luckily, I met some good PhD friends who can share with me the joys and sorrows.

WheneverWhenever we feel frustrated, upset and lost in the study, we always encourage each other. The usual question we will ask each other is “which decision you will make if you have the chance to choose again?” We all know we will make the same choice. Life without them will be boring. The supervisors are also very supportive. They are like our parents. For instance, once I submitted a paper for a conference but I do not want to take part in for some reasons, I wrote to my supervisor Prof. KENNEDY to express my feelings. I thought such question would be ignored since he had so manymany things to deal with. Instead, he responded immediately, and he did not scold me but kindly taught me the importance of exchanging academic ideas with scholars. What more can you ask for when you have the friends and teachers who cares about you? I would like to express my gratitude to all my teachers and friends in the Institute.
