I had the absolute pleasure last week of attending the Senior School play, The
Servant of Two Masters. I had seen this play some years ago at the Perth
International Festival of the Arts and I can honestly say that our students held
their own – a fantastic effort from all involved, and my first opportunity to
address a gathering of College families.
I attended my first assembly at the Wodonga campus last week – delightful
students, and a very welcoming staff. I plan to spend a half day every fortnight
here, and I look forward to doing some exciting things and helping staff where
possible.
Last weekend I was at the Queensland Anglican Schools Conference. The
theme was ‘Through Their Eyes’ which reminds us of our purpose in guiding,
supporting and challenging our young people to be ready to make a positive
difference in the world. Father Peter made a similar connection in his sermon
at St Matthew’s a couple of weeks ago when he was speaking about the
concept of remembrance – it is all well and good to remember, but if it doesn’t
From the Principal
change our actions or behaviour then it can be a somewhat hollow gesture. I
am reminded of the words of Mahatma Gandhi who said “Be the change you
wish to see in the world”. I see things happening on a daily basis at TAC that
would indicate to me that our students are being well guided and supported by
the fine staff on both campuses, to be the instigators of positive change.
Sunday 22 May is Trinity Sunday and will be celebrated at St Matthew’s at 9am
that day. On Trinity Sunday, Christians remember the eternal God who is made
up of the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. It would be terrific to see
TAC students, their families and friends at this service.
Staff start each week with a briefing and reflection. Mrs Bennett shared this
prayer with us on Monday and I would like to share it with you.
God of a thousand names, You come to us in many forms – manna to the
hungry, water to the parched, embrace to the grieving, rainbow to the
despairing, champion of the oppressed, defender of the exploited, friend to the
lonely, rescuer to the lost, shock to the comfortable, peace to the restless,
mystery to the knowing, revelation to the seeking.
God of many names, You reveal Yourself to us in our time of need, yet remain
beyond our control or understanding. You are not to be categorised or shaped
to suit our small minds.
You are God and we are Your people.

Peter O’Neill Deputy Principal
As the Church calendar turns around to the season of Pentecost once more,
there is opportunity to meditate on the gift of Spirit. We are ‘spirited’ people.
At some level we are aware that we are more than just our thoughts and
emotions. The very ability to name our thoughts and feelings suggests that
part of our self exists outside them and observes. The Christian tradition says
that this place is our spirit or soul – the part of us that connects with what we
call God. The contemporary mindfulness tradition calls it ‘being in the
moment’. In the world of our thoughts and feelings we are acutely aware of
time and we often get caught up in dwelling on the past or the future. When
we touch on the place of spirit or ‘being in the moment’ we discover that the
usual rules don’t apply: time seems to stretch and we are able to watch our
thoughts with curiosity as they drift across our inner screen. The Pentecost
story assures us that God freely pours out the Spirit on all. Inner strength,
peace, healing and importantly connectedness result when we welcome the
Divine Spirit into our lives. So we gladly pray: ‘Come Holy Spirit! Come!’
PS. Students family and friends of Trinity are invited to attend St Matthew’s on
Trinity Sunday at 9am Sunday 22 May.

Positive Education Update
This term has commenced with staff taking part in a Positive Education
professional development workshop with Daniela Falecki from the Positivity
Institute. This workshop included evidence based information around
strengths and Positive Psychology. Enhancing our student well-being will have
a positive impact on academic achievement. Our next step with this approach
is to create our own unique positive education approach for the Trinity
Anglican College community. A well-being committee has been established
which will work with the Positivity Institute in developing our approach. We
will be spending time this term reviewing our current programs and
investigating PERMA, which was designed by Martin Seligman:

A parent information session will also take place later this semester to discuss
this exciting model. For further information about positive psychology:

Study Skills - Starting Assignments Straight Away
Ever leave your assignments until the last minute? Well here are five reasons
to start work on your assignments immediately:
• GET YOUR BRAIN THINKING ABOUT THE TOPIC: At the very least, read
through the requirements of the assignment on the day you get your
assignment. Even if you are not thinking about it directly, your subconscious
will be hard at work.
• FIND LIBRARY RESOURCES: Although the library may not be your main source
of reference, you should drop in soon after receiving the assignment.
Reference books, resources and magazines will disappear quickly. It is not a
good idea to only use Google.
• DISCOVER OTHER RESOURCES: You could also ask your local librarian for any
additional direction on where to look for resource material for your
assignment. Librarians know how to help people access relevant information,
in books, journals and in computer based references.
• STARTING EARLY MEANS MORE TIME TO EXPLORE & ASK FOR HELP: Your
initial research might be on assignment points you’ve identified through the
library, references your teacher may have given you, school textbooks, and/or
general internet search engines. If you start this early, you could discover that
you don’t actually understand important concepts and that perhaps you need
to speak to your teacher to get further clarity.
• CREATE A SAFETY NET: Starting your assignment immediately will give you a
safety net in case you get sick, or something unexpected happens. You should
always have a schedule that allows for the unexpected.
You can learn more about being more effective with assessments in the

Tuesday 17 May. Only students who returned their forms last term will receive
the vaccinations.
Year 12 Parent Teacher Interviews
Year 12 Parent Teacher interviews take place on Wednesday 18 May. As Year
12 students have now completed over 50% of their HSC Course, this is an ideal
opportunity for parents and students to discuss their progress with the Year 12
teachers. Details for bookings can be found in Mr O’Neill’s article.
A Servant of Two Masters
Congratulations to all students who were involved in ‘A Servant of Two
Masters’. A special mention must go to the Year 12 students who have
managed to juggle rehearsals and assessment tasks. Mr Mancer did a fantastic
job in getting the students prepared for what was a genuinely funny
performance.

Relay for Life update
Well done to Ella Inskip and Bella Warner who organised a BBQ fundraiser
outside the IGA in East Albury recently. With the assistance of their families
they made a total of $117 for our team. Thanks also to East Albury IGA who
donated the sausages and bread for the fundraiser.
Year 11 students also raised $550 from the breakfast café that ran a couple of
weeks ago. Students arrived early to prepare breakfast for staff, students and
parents under the supervision of Mrs Pearce, Mrs Kelb and Ms Millan.
Congratulations to all students who were prepared to set their alarm early and
support our fundraising efforts.
Bus Passes
A reminder from the bus companies that all students need to present their bus
passes when they enter a school bus. Students who have lost their pass are
required to organise a replacement as soon as possible.
Malcolm Thomas Head of Senior School
The 3 R’s
At a number of Assemblies and Chapel services the Junior School has been
made aware of the importance of these to our learning. Respect for Self,
Respect for Others and Respect for our Environment. It is interesting to reflect
on these each week. Given that we have a very strong focus on the importance
of respecting our Environment in the SHINE program which takes place in
Week 6 the students are living these aspects as part of their learning. Respect
for others is at the core of living in community. To be able to recognise and
celebrate the strengths that individual difference brings to our understanding
is the core of creating a fairer and more resilient society. The first and
foremost though is to respect Self. To value our contribution, to take pride in
our involvement and, when things do not go well, to forgive ourselves these
mistakes and to improve.
From the Junior School
It is an exciting time at the College with a number of events occurring over the
semester.
Mothers’ Day
A big THANKYOU to Letitia and Natasha Harrington and the other helpers for
the setting up and organisation of the Mothers’ Day Stall. The students and
their mothers really appreciated the opportunity.
Rugby: Steamers Cup
The College was the last school standing for the day and a training session and
practice matches took place last Friday to select students for the two teams to
travel to the next stage at Wagga. It was a great morning with all students
showing good skills and relishing the challenge (for many) of playing a different
game.
Public Speaking
Week 5 sees the start of the Public Speaking Competition. The staff are looking
forward to hearing these speeches as the end product of much hard work.
BIPSA Cross Country
This is occurring on Friday 13 May. The College has had a very successful run of
success and the students are looking forward to giving their all under the
leadership of George Flanagan and Zarlie Goldsworthy.
SHINE
As mentioned this takes place in Week 6. It is a very interactive day aimed at
raising awareness and enhancing skills under the auspices of sustainability.
Life Education
The Life Education Van will be visiting the College to work with students over
Week 6 and 7.
Steven Armstrong Head of Junior School
Welcome
The Campus welcomed our Interim Principal, Mrs Susan Shaw, at an informal
gathering last week, and I am sure we will see her around the school just as
often as she is able. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Shaw to the important
occasions the College has planned over the next term or two and to meeting as
many of our students and parents as possible.
ANZAC Pics
Thanks to everyone who marched in the Anzac Parade at Wodonga and
represented the College with pride.
Mothers’ Day Stall
Our Mothers’ Day stall was an outstanding success, thanks to everyone who
donated items and to our wonderful parent helpers for their efforts in
wrapping, pricing and organising everything. The lucky winner of the raffle was
Donna Calagas and thanks to Annie Stefaniak (from Lakeside Skincare in
Beechworth) for her donation of a Massage and Makeup, Natalie Pirkola (NP
Hairdressing) who donated a Hair Care package, and Karen Plested who
donated Personal Training sessions.

Co-Curricula Activities
Co-Curricula Activities of Cross Country (Monday), Art & Craft (Wednesday),
Cooking & Gardening (Tuesday), and Netball (Saturday) are going strongly. A
bit of rain recently caused our zucchinis and tomatoes to put on a late spurt of
growth, and here is the result. Thanks to Mrs Billington and Mrs Armstrong for
all their efforts.

Sport Report
No doubt there have been some weary students seeking some well-earned rest over the
last fortnight. It has been a busy two weeks with the College proudly represented by many
enthusiastic students.
CIS Senior Swimming Championships
Trinity was represented by a handful of talented swimmers at the CIS Senior Swimming
Championships, over Week 3. Our small, but successful team out-performed all previous
attempts against the strong CIS competition.
Of the 31 events Trinity was represented in, more than half were in the top ten.
Congratulations to Sarah-Jane Male, Blaynee House, Mackensey House, April Monte, Teigan
Shirley and Paddy Duggan!

RAS Netball – Senior School
With the winter sports enjoying a fog-free start to the season, College students have made
the most of their opportunity to trial for the Riverina Associated Netball team. The Under
15 (Chloe Wise-Chalker, Mackensey House, Zali Spencer) and Open (Maggie St John, Molly
Goldsworthy, Shaylah House) teams will now come up against all other CIS Associations
later in the term.
In 2015, the RAS teams were the most successful they have been and we wish them luck.
RAS Netball – Junior School
Trinity was represented by Alice Male, Latia Rawaqa and Lana Heer as part of the Primary
RAS team. By all accounts the girls had a great day competing at Netball Central,
Homebush, on Friday, 6 May. The team was made up of the best Independent School
players from throughout the Riverina and played seven games against fierce opposition
from all over the state. RAS proudly finished fifth overall, losing some close games.
Senior School International Netball Tour, New Zealand 2017
Students have the opportunity to express their interest in participating in an International
Netball tour to New Zealand. The week-long tour is planned for the 2017, Term 2 break.
Whilst details have not been finalised, it is anticipated that the cost will be in the vicinity of
$2500.
It is anticipated that the College will send a minimum of two teams (2017) Open - Years
10/11/12 and 15 Years and Under (Years 8/9).
A parent information night has been scheduled with the Travel Director of NPIRE, Natalie
Porter, for Monday, 20 June 2016 at 5.30pm in the College Library. Initially, parents are
asked to confirm their daughter’s interest by emailing me by Monday, 30 May, 2016.
Senior Girls Footy - 'Do not accept the score'
Aussie Rules footy continues to attract a huge amount of interest amongst our senior
school girls. With around forty students interested in trying out for the team taken to the
recent gala day at Scots College, it is clear that our young women are highly motivated to
play this great game. Captain Mon Schollick, playing ruck, was an exceptional performer
and provided useful direction and leadership on the field. Stand out performers also
included Kate Grunow with her ability to read the play and confidence in directing the
back line, Laura Chase and Maggie St John in their ability to create opportunities on the
wing and Paige Evans who capitalised on opportunities in the forward line by scoring two
16 Newsletter 7, Week 3, Term 2 13 May 2016
goals. All players demonstrated high levels of effort, sportswomanship, respect and
passion for the game on the day.
Football continues to be hugely popular amongst our senior girls as it is viewed amongst
the players as an opportunity to challenge attitudes surrounding the roles that girls play in
community both on and off the sporting field. Player reflections on the gala day include
that they were thrilled to have the opportunity to show that sport isn’t just for boys, that
they want to be role models and leaders for other young women and that the phrase ‘kick
like a girl’ is something to be proud of, rather than an insult. The squad is determined to
improve their skills and continue to enjoy the fun of footy by playing and mentoring
younger students at training sessions that will take place throughout the rest of Term 2.
Any girls interested in playing Aussie Rules footy in a girls U18 competition can do so by
attending Wednesday night training for the Lavington Panthers.
Lunch time footy sessions will soon follow at school for any senior school girl interested in
playing football for fun during school time.

Senior Boys AFL – Bill Taylor Shield
Last Tuesday 3 May, the Senior School boys AFL team took part in the Bill Taylor Shield at
Xavier High School. Other schools competing in our pool were James Fallon, Corowa High
and St Paul’s College Walla Walla. The most consistent performers throughout the day
were Jeremy Smith, Jacob Pargeter, Will Evans and Kyle Magee. Our most dangerous
17 Newsletter 7, Week 3, Term 2 13 May 2016
forwards were Jaret O’Neill and Hamish Cameron, both kicking multiple goals over the
course of the day. Trinity finished third however it was the boys’ professionalism and
attitude that were extremely pleasing to witness.
Kade Stevens
Under 15 CIS AFL
After travelling to Sydney, Trinity students Darcy Harrington, Sam Cavanough and Mitchell
Scott were successful in being selected for the CIS Under 15 AFL team. Over the past few
years CIS has been very successful against the Catholic and Combined High School Regions.
We wish the boys and their Assistant Coach, Mr Dicketts, all the best.
RAS Soccer
While the girls were competing for positions on the RAS netball team our soccer players
were across the road trialling for the RAS Soccer team, with the following boys being
successful: Oliver Bradford, Joshua Holland, Sean Nielsen and Bailey Waters. The RAS girls
will team up with another CIS association, and Trinity will be represented by Molly
Goldsworthy and Caitlin Bishop.
CIS Tennis – Primary
Congratulations to Ella Brown and her CIS Primary Tennis Team members on achieving the
title of NSWPSSA State Champions and the winner of the Don Moon Trophy! Sue Watts,
The Hills Grammar School and CIS Team manager guided the team through four days of
demanding competition to a hard fought victory. Congratulations to all players in the CIS
team. By all accounts Ella played exceptionally well as she was undefeated until the final in
doubles and only dropped two sets in the singles; a tremendous effort!
College Cross Country
With a late change of date, the College Cross Country carnival still proved to be a big
success. Pleasingly, all students attempted the longer, more technical track with the goal
to help see their House succeed. Congratulations to Kimball who proved to be too
competitive in the Junior School and Rosborough who added another title to the many it
already has in the Senior School.
The College will be represented by two very strong teams in the BIPSA and BISSA Cross
Country events. I look forward to sharing their success later in the term.

It is exciting to be part of the process organising the first ever Trinity Year 10 Careers
Week! The week will involve a range of presentations and student activities focusing on
providing information relevant to students at this stage of their secondary schooling. It will
also include sessions where students will be assisted to complete their own careers
related research.
Information about a wide range of interest areas and occupations will be incredibly
beneficial to our young people. Therefore, as part of Careers Week, I am asking for
volunteers to be involved in presenting information about their occupation to small
groups of students. Please contact me by email on [email protected]
if you are interested in assisting.
Alternatively, if you are involved with the recruitment of young people, we would love to
hear from you! It would be fantastic if we can offer insights into the employment process
which will give our students a better understanding of the skills required for both
permanent and casual positions. If you are available to deliver a presentation, please
contact me at the above email address.

Film night – ‘Most Likely to Succeed’ screening at The Cube in
Wodonga on 18 May
The Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship (ACRE), based in
Beechworth, is pleased to present ‘Most Likely to Succeed’.
If you are interested in new approaches to education that prepare children for the changing face of
employment, then this film is for you.
This film documents the history of education in the US (much of which is equally applicable to Australia)
and challenges the status quo by highlighting new approaches that use project-based learning.
They encourage the critical and creative skills of children to better prepare them for advances in
technology, automation and the future of work.
It’s an inspiring film aligned with ACRE’s role of moving young people from job-seekers to job-creators.
It will be screened across north east Victoria in May and you can book your ticket by visiting ACRE’s
