From the Principals Desk

Welcome to Term 2

We would like to extend a big welcome to new students and families who have

joined us this term. It is great to see our school continually growing.

As always, please contact the classroom teacher regarding an issues or

concerns about your child’s learning. Myself and the deputies are also available

to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have. We are always out on

duty, so feel free to come and have a chat with us.

This term we welcome a new staff member, Mrs Kathryn (Kate) Verryt, who will be

taking over the year 1 class in room 4 as Ms Haley Langman is currently on sick

leave. Thanks to our parents who attended our Anzac Day ceremony to support our

students in learning about the ANZAC spirit. Thanks also to Cullyn Kentish and

Cherise Edwards for being our wreath bearers for the Geraldton ANZAC

ceremony on Saturday. Well done!

Australian Early Development Census

Parents of students in Pre-Primary, will receive a letter outlining what the AEDC is

about and how this will impact on your child. The AEDC asks survey questions

about students to determine state wide what our needs are in the Early

Childhood area. Teachers are asked to complete these surveys which will then

support government in making decisions about improving policies and programs

for young children.

NAPLAN

This term our year 3 students will be involved in the National Assessment Program

in Literacy and Numeracy from 12th May to the 14th May. This year, our school is

involved in the NAPLAN online project, where our students will be completing

their NAPLAN test ( except for writing) online. As a school, we will be required to

give feedback to the department on how this process works for our students.

As parents, we need to remember that NAPLAN testing is only one moment in

time. When NAPLAN results are used together with other evidence that teachers

use to determine student grades for reporting, this information can provide

parents with an indication of how a child is achieving in relation to their peers

within the school and across Australia. It is important that if your child is

achieving below the National Minimum Standard, you have a conversation with

your child’s teacher to discuss what is being put in place to support them in

making continued progress. Our school has many processes in place to support

students in small group and at an individual level. Principal : Di Miller - Deputy Principals: Sue Ashworth - Michael Ostazsewskyj - Phone: 08 99234 200 - Fax: 08 99234 222 - Email: [email protected] - www.wandinaprimaryschool.wa.edu.au

Maths at Home

Everyday life is full of opportunities to help children learn

about maths. Here are some ideas to help you bring maths

to life for your children when you are at home or out and

about.

At home:

• Talk about shapes in the home

For example rectangle tables, oval

placemats and

triangle sandwiches. Point out the

number of sides

of each shape.

• Tidy up time

When tidying up, talk about positions such as in, on,

under, in front and behind. For example: Let’s put all the

toys in the toy box or Let’s put your teddy bear on the bed.

• Bath time

Count how many mugs of water fill a plastic jug.

• Using money

Let your children handle money. Help them count

out how much money they have saved. Ask them to

sort and order the coins and notes according to value

and then count them. When they receive money as

gifts, use shopping catalogues to help them plan how

they might spend their money. Talk with your children

about saving up for something special.

• In the garden

Count and space out seedlings and measure the

height of plants.

Nut Free and Egg Aware SchoolNut Free and Egg Aware SchoolNut Free and Egg Aware SchoolNut Free and Egg Aware School

We have a number of students who have mild to

severe allergies if food is shared with Nuts or eggs. It is

important that you are aware of this. We encourage

you not to send foods such as muesli bars with nuts in

them. The egg allergies are raw egg related and are

therefore something that needs to be considered

when cooking. We discourage the sharing of food

due to these allergies.

If there are children in your child’s class with these

allergies. Please check with your child’s teacher

when bringing cakes etc. for birthdays. A poster will

be displayed on the classroom window to let parents

know that this is something they need to be aware of

for their child’s class.

IGA Supporting Schools ProgramIGA Supporting Schools ProgramIGA Supporting Schools ProgramIGA Supporting Schools Program IGA Queens and Wonthella are supporting schools by

giving points to shoppers every time you purchase

items from their stores. Please ask the checkout

operator to give your points to Wandina Primary

School before you pay your bill. At the end of the

financial year, we will receive a donation from IGA in

the form of a cheque. Please support our school by

putting your IGA shopping points to our school.

Parking Thanks to all our parents who are taking the time to

reverse park in the carpark and driving slowly around

the school to watch out for our students.

We are not asking you to do this to be mean. This is

about the safety of our students as they are still

learning about road safety. It is also not appropriate

for parents to have a go at others about parking. If

someone asks you nicely to reverse park, please do

so for the kids, it is not about you…If we all do the right

thing, we won’t have an issue.

A reminder that the Blue Dots in the front car park are

designated for staff parking. Parents are only able to

use the parking bays at the end of the car park near

the ECE playground if available.

The Kiss and drop bays are not for parking, they are for

parents who are dropping off their children and then

moving on, or picking up their children. If children

move to the front of the school, near kiss and drop,

they will be supervised whilst waiting for their parents

to park and move off. I am sure that the kiss and drop

area will be used more so in winter.

Thanks for your support in ensuring the carparks and

roads around our school are safe for our children.

P&C Meeting The next P&C meeting will be held on the 7th May

In the school staffroom.

The P&C really needs your help to ensure they can

continue running the canteen and support the school

through fundraising for our future nature playground.

If you are interested in being involved (many hands

make light work..) please join us at the meeting on

Thursday next week.

Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness (PA) is the ability to hear and create rhymes, clap and count syllables,

blend, segment and manipulate sounds. Children who have strong PA skills usually have more success with reading, writing and spelling. Our

students in Kindy and Pre-Primary are assessed to determine how they are progressing with these

skills. Students are involved in many different activities in class to support their learning in this area. Ask your child’s teacher if you would like to

know more.

Library Book Reminder Could all parents/guardians ensure that ALL library

books are returned on time? If your child has

outstanding library books at the moment could you

please return to the library as soon as possible?

Parents will be invoiced for books that are missing.

after an extended period of time. Thanks
