Hi everyone, If you made it to the NEC convention this year, I hope you had a great time, I did! I would really like to thank Convention Chair Leslie Dick for putting together a great lineup of speakers. I was able to see a number of talks; not as many as I wanted to, but every talk I saw was interesting and I learned a lot. Thank you to all the speakers who came and gave presentations. The Vendor Room was great again and I would also like to thank Nancy Villars, our Vendor Room Chair. She does the organization and keeps the vendor room running smoothly. There are many other people who also do a lot of work before, during and after the convention: too many to name here. I am not going to try because if I do I will forget someone. Everyone you see working: from the moment you check in at the convention, working at the fish show, working the conservation table, working in the Hospitality Room, introducing and recording the speakers, and working at the auction and doing all the other things it takes to put on the convention are all volunteers without whom the convention would be lessened. Finally, I would like to thank the people who attended the convention and the auction. Without you and your interest, the convention would not be possible. Out of all the aquarists, aquatic gardeners and pond keepers in the Northeast, your interest and energy keeps these conventions going and fun. If you are reading this and you have never been to a convention, what are you waiting for? Most of the people who go to a convention, any convention, will go again. The three big national club conventions are coming up in the next couple of months: the American Livebearer Association, the American Killifish Association and the American Cichlid

Association. I have been to all three and they are all fun and worthwhile. Each has a different vibe and they all have fish you may have never even heard of before. Unfortunately I have to chose each year to go to only one (unless another is in the Northeast), but if I won the lottery, I would go to each as well as the Catfish Convention and most of the regional conventions. One of the great things about the NEC to me is that it allows you to be part of a larger community of fish nuts. For most of us, our spouses or partners are not into the hobby. Our kids are also probably not into aquaria. That leaves the guys hanging out at the Local Fish Store, if you still have one. Who else understands the importance of pH? Who else knows that when you cycle an aquarium you don't ride somewhere? Once a month you may meet at your local fish club and the NEC lets you find out when and where the other clubs' auctions and meetings are. I just returned from the New England Cichlid Association meeting. Guest speaker Kim Pederson from Denmark (which I learned is the Capitol of Germany) gave a great talk with lots of nice photos of cichlids from Lake Victoria and surrounding lakes. Some of these cichlids are almost as colorful as killies! I actually came home with a bag of cichlid fry! Kim's photos made the fish just too tempting and the ones I bought are only supposed to get to 3-1/2 inches long. Also in the room were Les Kaufman and Paul Loiselle and we saw photos of fish than they all agreed were undescribed species. Only a few people have ever seen these fish and even fewer have had the chance to keep them. Kim brought some of these fish with him and some were available at the meeting. Les also brought one of his students who grew up next to Lake Victoria. He seemed moved by the interest and passion of the people in the room for fish from his home, and expressed the important role that we play in preserving these fish, not just for our children but for his. And if you want to know how Denmark became the capitol of Germany, ask someone who was at the meeting, but we are all sworn to secrecy! Best wishes, Rich Pierce, President

NEC Convention Update Our 2018 convention and Sunday auction were great successes. Thank you to all the committee members and volunteers throughout the weekend, the speakers and vendors, and for all who attended the weekend. We had about two-thirds of our member clubs represented and over 40 first-time NEC convention attendees. NEC Convention 2019:

DATE and NEW VENUE! The NEC convention will be held from April 12-14, 2019 and the newly-branded RED LION HOTEL, at 100 Berlin Rd, Cromwell, CT 06416, off Exit 21 on I-91.

We held our last convention there in 2015 when the hotel was the Crowne Plaza. I’m already working with speakers for the 2019 convention, and expect to begin announcing them later in the summer as they and their presentations are confirmed. Convention Survey: The survey for our 2018 convention can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3TJ9PJV. This is a 10-question survey that you should be able to complete in about 10 minutes. Your critique of this past convention and Sunday auction assists the committee as we begin working on the 2019 event. Please take this important survey today. Have a great summer, and see you at the 2019 Convention! Leslie

Boston Aquarium Society Our next monthly meeting on April 16th will be our Spring Breeder's Auction. The split is 30/70 in favor of the seller. This is a great opportunity to share the fish you may be breeding with other

hobbyists, while also seeing what other hobbyists are breeding, possibly something that you would want to try you hand at keeping/breeding yourself! The auction is free and open to all. There are no fees besides the split, and all monthly meeting auctions are cash and carry. Minimum bid is $3 per lot. As usual, we will be meeting at the New England Aquarium's Harborside Learning Lab. Doors open at 7:30PM, and the meeting begins shortly after 8:00PM. As always, meetings are free and open to everyone. There will be refreshments available. Parking is free at city meters after 8PM, and we can validate parking tickets for the parking garage for a discounted rate.
