An Invitation We would like to invite members of the community and past friends of the school to join with us in saying goodbye to Judy Gidzewicz who is taking early retirement at the end of this summer term. Judy has been Head Teacher at Tintagel Primary School since January 2004. She has seen the school through many stages including; the KS1 and office block extensions, building of the Childrens Centre, joining the Moor and Coastal Partnership Trust, establishing our annual St Pirans Day Pilgrimage, forming a partnership with Delabole Community Primary School and recently formation of the Creative Learning Multi Academy Trust. We are holding a cream tea of Wednesday 22nd July from 3:30pm either in the school hall or outside depending on our Cornish summer weather! Please may we ask you to pass the word to people outside the village who you feel may wish to come as there are too many of you to personally invite and we wouldnt want to miss anyone out! Children of all ages are of course welcomeit is after all a school. We would, however, ask if you could notify the school office on 01840 770473 if you intend to come so we have enough scones.

A MESSAGE FROM DAN ROGERSON I should like to thank your readers for all the support they have given me over the last 10 years as Member of Parliament for this wonderful constituency. It has been a privilege to represent our area. I have fought to secure improvements to and investment in our area. Local residents and businesses are continuing to receive the benefits of broadband and I hope that this Conservative majority government will preserve our hard won 50 a year rebate on water bills. Of course there is much unfinished business. While unemployment has fallen we need to continue the investment in better quality jobs and to make good use of European Union funding we receive. Throughout my time in politics I have been motivated by a desire to see a fairer society, our environment protected a greater say for Cornwall over our own affairs. I will continue to campaign on these issues. My Liberal Democrat colleague Councillor Glenton Brown will continue to work for local people and represent you at Cornwall Council, and North Cornwall Liberal Democrats will continue to campaign for a fair deal for people in our area. I congratulate the successful candidate Scott Mann and offer him my co-operation to make sure that individuals cases are smoothly handed over to him. I can only do so with written permission and should anyone be keen to have their file passed on please contact my office at 4 Tower Street, Launceston PL15 8BQ with their written permission. Thank you once again to everyone who voted for me and has supported me and the local Liberal Democrats. Dan Rogerson Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall 2005 - 2015 $ $ $ !

DO YOU REMEMBER THE LUTON GIRLS CHOIR? The Choir was formed in 1936 by Arthur E. Davies and was very popular in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. They still performed on stage and on radio until 1976. There were around thirty ladies who made up the choir and they were all chosen by Arthur with strict conditions. You had to have an excellent voice, all round musical ability and come from the local area. You must not be older than 23 years of age and once that age was reached, no matter what your ability, you had to be replaced!. This would mean that a lady could expect to only be in the Choir for around ten years.

No married women were allowed to take part in the choirs music making either!. The girls may have been only amateurs but Arthur E. Davies was very professional in all aspects of his work and was not only the groups founder, but guiding light, arranger and conductor. It was the determined, professional manner of the Luton Girls Choir that raised them high above any other groups like, the Vauxhall Girls and Dunstable Girls Choirs, who were all active at this time

  • !! 18!

It is difficult to imagine in 2015 any similar choir like the Luton Girls flourishing in the present climate. They recorded for the Parlophone record label and their records were often heard on the radio particularly in programmes like Housewives Choice. Amongst their memorable recordings still available are The Dream of Olwen, Count Your Blessings, While The Angelus Was Ringing (the Jimmy Brown Song) and Break of Day. If you would like to hear them perform why not buy the CD which is still available called The Luton Girls Choir from record suppliers or on the Internet. If you want to actually see and hear them you can also buy a DVD called Old Mother Riley, Headmistress where they sing two of their arrangements Count Your Blessings and Till Your Dreams Come True They were a wonderful choir and when Arthur E.Davies decided to call it a day in 1976 after he became too ill to conduct the Choir, it was decided that they would finish. He died later that year. The choir gave its final performance at a tribute concert for Arthur Davies on 5 November 1977 There is something magical about the Luton Girls Choir. If you have heard them you will know what I mean but if not you have missed a treat and I would advise you to buy the CD or DVD and you will have a very worthwhile experience David Flower

Tintagel Garden Club April 2015 Newsletter Our talk for April was A Trip to Nepal and was given by our club secretary Di Mills and her husband David; this once in a lifetime experience was undertaken in the April and May 2008 Monsoon season, and spectacular storms were part of the itinerary. Their plane landed at Kathmandu airport, where they were met by their guide who drove them to their hotel through streets strewn with rubbish, and full of a chaotic mix of traffic, people and farm animals. The locals all smiled welcomingly at the passing visitors, the ladies wearing brightly coloured saris. This scene, together with a myriad of shops selling spices and local crafts became a common feature their time in Nepal. Their hotel was a different world; a very modern building with every facility and a beautiful garden. The diverse Nepalese terrain makes for a variable climate; and their trek took them through a cold zone on the higher ground, through temperate regions with steaming jungles on the lower lands. In the villages life is geared around producing enough food to survive. Cultivation is by wooden ploughs pulled by water buffalo, with the occasional very old tractor or rotavator. Most of the fields are too small and steep for large agricultural machinery and some very steep ground is terraced, with crops of rice, wheat, jute, millet, maize and wheat. The crops are harvested by hand and collected in long cone shaped baskets slung across the workers shoulders. These baskets are made from bamboo which is very versatile and strong and has a wide variety of uses, from babies cradles to precarious swinging bridges. Ornamental plants are almost always grown in the tourist areas and include Mimosa. Persian Lilac and Cinnamon. The final days of the adventure was spent at Tiger Tops, Chitwan National Park which involved a journey by plane, an ancient Landrover and a dugout canoe. Transport for the

safari was by elephant and they had some scarily close encounters with a rhino and tigers, also plenty of sightings of deer and monkeys. The meeting was finally brought back to earth after being transported to another world; the slides and commentary were excellent, leaving us with a lasting impression of a courageous kindly people living in a fragile world with its breath taking scenery, brooded over by awesome mountains. Our next meetings: Friday the 15th of May: Sempervivums by Howard Wills 7.30 pm at Tintagel Social Hall Saturday the 23rd of May: The Garden Club Plant Sale from 2.30pm at the Tintagel Social Hall. Bedding, vegetable and garden plants at very reasonable prices, all our welcome. Chris Weight Newsletter Secretary. For membership enquiries please contact Di Mills on 01840 770894
