Welcome

We have had a new staff member join our school community. Mrs Michelle Steiner has taken on the role of Teacher Aide three days per week.  Michelle comes with significant experience in the field especially with supporting students with disabilities and learning difficulties and will be a valued addition to our team.

Book Week

Teachers and students alike have had a blast this week as we celebrated Book Week. Story-telling in the Library was a huge hit each lunch break while the rotational activities on Thursday morning proved both educational end enjoyable. Thank you to all the students and their families who went to great lengths to dress up as their favourite book character.

Literacy and Numeracy Week

Next week, students will get to enjoy a range of numeracy activities including challenges to celebrate Literacy and Numeracy Week.

Prep Open Day

Families wanting to know about Prep at Minden can come along to our Open Day on Wednesday 14th September. 2017 Prep children will get to experience a range of typical activities in the classroom while parents will be provided with a brief overview of what our school offers and how to prepare their child for Prep. Our four “Step into Prep” transition afternoons will be held in term 4.

School Rules focus

For weeks 6 and 7, classes have been focussing on “I Am Respectful”.  Adults are looking for children who actively listen (using our whole-body listening approach)

and follow instructions the first time. Do you encourage this at home?

Moderation of Student Work

Last Tuesday afternoon Minden teachers, along with three teachers from Fernvale State School, participated in a professional learning session designed to help teachers grade student work samples in a consistent manner using a criteria matrix or “Guide to Making Judgements.” Feedback indicated this was a challenging but professionally rewarding exercise.

Moderation is an education department process aimed at building teachers’ teaching and assessment ability which ultimately improves student learning.

Attendance

Thankfully, we appear to be over the worst of cold and flu season with many children returning to school.  Our average daily attendance rate is currently 88.8% - well below Education Queensland’s target of 95%. Year 3 have fared quite well and have an average daily attendance of 92.9%.

Camp

It’s almost here! Minden year 5 and 6 students, along with students from four local schools will attend Tallebudgera School Camp in week one of next term. It is essential that final payments are forwarded prior to the end of the term.

Swimming

Minden has booked Woodlands again this year for our swimming program. This will commence in week two of next term and run through to week nine. The next newsletter will have details regarding costs and requirements.

Minden Crossroads Upgrade

In a few weeks’ time, representatives from Transport and Main Roads, Somerset Council, and regional Workplace Health and Safety will meet at our school to discuss the impact of the upgrade on the car park and potential safety hazards. We are hoping the outcome will significantly improve access, short and long term parking as well as traffic flow

School Review

The department of Education and Training introduced performance reviews for Queensland state schools in 2015. The reviews are conducted by the department’s School Improvement Unit. The reviews do not rate or compare schools but provide independent and quality feedback to help schools continue to improve outcomes for students. All schools have a review at least every four years. Key findings for the review are made available to parents and the community on the school’s website. Our school is scheduled for a review form 8 - 12 September.

Many hands make light work!

Year 3

Year Three has been very busy in the last few weeks. Mrs Hingst and Sharon (a lab technician) came out to school to take samples of bacteria and to place Agar plates to be incubated. This was to allow the bacteria to develop so the students could examine it under the microscope at the Meat Processing Plant at Coominya. The year 3's found this quite amusing especially when some of the students were encouraged to take their shoes off or take a swab from their ears or nose. The samples were then labelled and sealed to prevent contamination.

With the help of lots of parent helpers, we were able to start our adventure. When we arrived we were taken out to a patio area where we had morning tea and Sue explained to everyone what we were going to do and all the safety rules. Everyone including the adults had to take off all their jewellery including watches and were not allowed to take pens or anything else with us. We were divided into three groups and were shown through the meat processing factory and the lab. In the laboratory we not only looked at our samples (which were kind of scary) but had a spray put on our hands. We then had to wash our hands. After they turned the lights off and showed us our hands under a special light. This showed how well or maybe not so well we washed our hands.

The factory makes lots of meat patties for MacDonalds and Hungry Jacks –also for lots of overseas companies. When we left they gave us a sample bag.

We then went to a park in Lowood for lunch and a play and walked around Lowood and looked at some of the old buildings.

Thanks to Keystone Foods and parents for making this day possible.

Meanwhile back at school, students are busy learning about timetables and solving time problems and in English are working on their retells for the Lorax. Our blanket is coming along with one square finished and another five in progress. Chess is also becoming a favourite.

Year 5 Science Challenge

Last Wednesday, 17th August, four Year 5 students attended Faith Lutheran College to participate in a science challenge. Kiara, Bella, Zac and Aiden took part in three

science investigations pitted against other schools from within our region. They had to investigate tasks set by teachers from Faith and then report their findings. All four students conducted themselves very well and, although we didn’t win the day, took on their roles as scientist as if they do it every day. It was a great day and we hope to be invited back next year.
