DIARY DATES 2021

We will continue studying the value, Confidence, next week. I was very impressed with the way our Student Leaders took part in discussions with the Review Panel last Monday. The confidence and the eloquence they displayed during these discussions were excellent. Our Parks and Gardens SBAT students conducted a presentation on the latest project with poise and dignity. Students and staff from SSF catered for the panel’s lunch. The food was expertly presented and tasted delicious. I was very proud of everyone who took part in the proceedings. The confidence and positivity demonstrated by both students and staff, along with their genuine respect and gratitude for our school, left me in no doubt that Emerson School continues to leads the way in the provision of quality education programs for our students.

When-we-go-walkabout (Yirruwa-yirrilikenuma-iangwa) is an Aboriginal story that JSH is reading.

The photos show how we are using our senses of touch and sight to understand more about deserts. We heated the sand

and made imprints with our hands, describing how the sand feels and the texture of it. We compared the colour of sand

with some of the animals, such as a green frog and discussed the lack of water in deserts to help with a sorting activity.

We used a column table to sort out which of the animal pictures we found hiding in the sand 1) live in the desert, 2) don’t

live in the desert and 3) may visit the desert at times. The students were focused, engaged and prompted to explain why

they made their choices.

Next week we will re-visit the topic and start making are own ‘walkabout’ book. It would be great to visit a local animal

sanctuary and use our other senses to support our understanding of habitats.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTIST OF THE WEEK

Maria S. Anime Portraits (2021)

Pencil, copic marker, and watercolour on paper. 297x 420 mm.

Maria’s artworks form a series of portraits of female anime characters. Her skills have

improved significantly with the practice of tracing images. She can accurately follow lines,

and apply the correct pressure to create thick and thin, dark and light lines.

To begin, she uses the internet to search for the image of a character. After printing the

image of her choice, she carefully traces their features -face, hair, and eyes. To finish she uses

a wide range of materials including coloured pencil, watercolour, and copic markers. She has

been practicing and learning how to use copic markers to make light and dark shades.

Anime is considered a Japanese style of cartoon. It is

hand-drawn animation and computer animation that comes

from Japan.

Anime is not to be confused with manga, which are comics

and graphic novels that come from Japan.

It is great that more females are appearing in anime today with interesting and complex backstories

that explain their character and personality.

HOUSE POLO SHIRT ORDER FORM

Students at Emerson School participate in a House Program (or ‘Houses’) every Wednesday morning. The

House program provides an opportunity for cross age tutoring of students, development of leadership skills

and an emergence of a ‘big sister/big brother’ mindset. Students look towards nurturing and encouraging

the younger members of their House like a family. Students are given a House group when they enrol. Each

House group is designated by a colour and House polo shirts are worn by each student. House polo shirts

can be ordered through school office using this order form. Only house polo shirts, in the appropriate house

colour, will be allowed to be worn on Wednesdays. No other clothes, regardless of colour, will be accepted.

If students do not wish to buy a house polo shirt they will need to wear their correct school uniform to

Emerson on Wednesdays.

The cost of the polo shirts have been heavily subsidised by the school and will cost $10 each.

Please fill in the form below and return it to the office with the money by 28TH MAY 2021 to purchase a

house polo shirt for your child.
