I have been out of the school for two

days this week assisting with a project

at the request of one of our area

directors. Fortunately, we have a great

team that soldiers on in my absence

but it certainly puts the pressure on

when I return to catch up!

On Monday evening, we had the final

centenary committee meeting! At

the meeting, we reviewed all centenary

events and activities and, of course,

the feelings were very strong that our

centenary was a resounding success.

One of the best outcomes for me was

the way the centenary drew together

members of our current and former

school communities. I learned a lot

about the history of the school and it

gave me a clearer understanding of

the many factors that make Maroubra

Junction such a wonderful public

school. My thanks again to all who

contributed to our celebrations this

year.

We are currently very busy planning

for 2014. A critical activity for us is

ensuring continuity of programs,

particularly for children with additional

learning needs. During week nine, a

series of handover meetings are

being planned between 2013 and 2014

class teachers. For children with higher

level additional needs, the meetings

will involve a chairperson, parents,

class teachers and support staff as

required. For other children with lower

level needs, the meeting will take place

between class teachers only and

parents will be informed and given the

option of being present. We will have

letters out to parents later this week or

purchase your child’s contribution to

our Art Show, there is still time.

Please send $5.00 in an envelope

clearly marked Art Show with your

child’s name and class to the office.

Works of art will then be sent home

with your child.

Languages Program 2014 The school will be offering French,

German and Spanish classes before

and after school in 2014 at a cost of

$22 per session. Please register your

Petition - Zebra Crossing We have been approached by a group

of parents from the French School who

are petitioning Randwick Council to

provide a permanent crossing on

Moverly Road. This has been endorsed

by the principal at the French School.

If you would like to sign the petition, it

is located in the school office.

Kiss & Go Helpers A number of parents who use Kiss &

Go have complained about others

parking in zone or leaving gaps,

limiting the amount of available space.

To assist with managing this situation,

we are requesting that we have a few

parent volunteers to patrol the zone

from time to time. If you can help out a

few times per term, we will provide a

yellow vest and instructions. We don’t

need supervisors every day, just on

random days to provide timely

reminders. If you can help, please

email the school at

[email protected]

Disco Rules Please check the next page of today’s

newsletter for updated disco rules.

It’s very important that parents

understand and support conditions of

attendance.

Stewart House Handballs Stewart House is supported by the

teachers and students of New South

Wales Public Schools and provides

opportunities for children who are in

need of a break from their everyday

life. During their stay children are

provided with optometric, dental and

medical treatment as well as emotional

and educational support. We still have

Stewart House handballs to sell!!

Christmas is REALLY really close and

they make great stocking stuffers. Eke

out that present with a Stewart House

Handball! Your child may need a

supply for next year – no tears when

one is lost, simply produce a spare.

These wonderful high bounce balls will

be on sale each morning from 8:30-

9:00am in Ms Batzakis’s room from

tomorrow (the classroom closest to the

office.) Don’t miss out! Only $3.00

each!!

Interrelate Notes were sent out with all children in

Years 3-6 regarding the Interrelate

program that will be offered at our

school on Tuesday, 26th November.

The program runs over two sessions

Where did I come from? and Preparing

for puberty and families may attend

either one or both sessions.

Year 6 Mini Fete Year 6 will be hosting the annual

Maroubra Junction Mini Fete

fundraiser on Tuesday 3rd December

from 12 noon until 1pm. Students from

Kindergarten to Year 5 will be invited

on this day to visit the 16 exciting stalls

Year 6 has created. There will be many

things on offer to purchase so please

don’t forget to provide your child with

money on the day! Prices for items/

games range from 50 cents to $5 per

stall. All the profits the Year 6 students

make from the stalls are used to buy

the school a gift on behalf of Year 6

2013. Thank you for your anticipated

support!

Requests for Class Placement in 2014 We will soon be considering formation

of classes for 2014. If parents have

particular requests, especially regarding

friendships and social groupings,

please click on the link below:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/

s/92KK5PX

Please be aware that many factors are

taken into account when forming

classes and we may not be able to

satisfy all requests.

Late Arrivals The number of children arriving 5-10

minutes late to school is increasing.

Please be aware that coming late to

school can often be very unsettling for

a child and they can miss out on

important information and learning

time. All late arrivals should report to

the school office to get a late note.

Even short periods are regarded as

partial absences on our attendance

register.

A separate undercover area will be set up just outside the hall for parents with tables and chairs with coffee and cakes

available. Parents are asked to stay outside of the hall. The large door at the back of the hall will be raised so parents

Student Banking At the beginning of the year we set a goal of raising $1000 dollars for our

school from student banking commissions (after hearing that some schools of

similar size raise $4000 per year). An educated guess puts us VERY close to

achieving this goal! But, we need to be consistent savers to the end of the year

and ultimately it's the amount banked each week that will tip the balance. Next

Tuesday is your last opportunity to bank before the draw closes on the term 4

competition. Good luck everyone!

Are you interested in becoming a Student Banking Coordinator? If so, please join

us for morning tea after school drop-off on Tuesday 26th November at The Verge

Cafe. Do you receive our email updates? If not, email your details to

Resource Allocation Model In 2012, the NSW Government

announced its Local Schools, Local

Decisions (LSLD) reform for NSW

public schools. This reform places

students at the centre of school

decision making. It gives principals

and school communities a greater say

over how they allocate and use the

available resources to best meet the

needs of their students.

To enable the shift of resources to the

school level, a new Resource

Allocation Model (RAM) has been

developed. The RAM is designed to

achieve a simpler, fairer and more

transparent distribution of

government school funding and

change the way resources (staff and

finances) are managed in our school

system.

The RAM provides many benefits to

schools by allocating most funding on

a per student basis. The new RAM will

ensure funding is provided to schools

based on the characteristics of those

schools and the students within them.

This will result in additional schools

receiving funding to support students

with identified needs.

S M AR T P H O N E A P P

To download the smartphone app,

search Maroubra Junction

in the app store.

Username: community

Password: maroubrajnps

In addition, schools identified as having students with the highest

need will be funded at a higher rate. We are shifting from the

current funding model where schools manage 10% of the total

public school education budget to more than 70% being managed

by schools.

This will potentially allow for more flexibility, innovation and

decision-making in schools to meet student needs.

In 2014, all schools will receive funding based on the first two

components of the RAM: the targeted (individual student) funding

and the equity funding (low level adjustment for disability,

Aboriginal background, English language proficiency and socio-

economic background).

Band News Junior Band

I would like to congratulate all junior

band members for a very focused

rehearsal last week. We sight read with

confidence two new pieces,

Huckleberry Hedgehog and Power Rock,

and students followed my conducting

cues like professionals. Look out senior

band. You have some fantastic

musicians joining you next year!

- Ms Wilson

Senior Band

I was also incredibly impressed with

the focus that was maintained by

Senior Band throughout last week's

band rehearsal. As an ensemble, we

discussed and explored the process of

tuning our instruments and playing

with good intonation. Intonation is the

adjustment of pitch while playing, in

order to be in tune with other

instruments. This means that students

must be continuously listening to their

sound and striving to blend with those

around them. This is a large part of

making a great sound as a band!

At home, all brass and woodwind

students should play each note of their

warm up scale for as long as possible,

while experimenting with factors such

as air support, body posture, and their

mouth/lip shape (embouchure). These

factors will all influence the pitch

(intonation) and the sound quality

(tone).

-Ms Talese

Practice

All band students received their

concert preparation practice charts

today. These will help students focus

on what to practise in each

performance piece leading up to our

concert.
