This week we had an afternoon in the computer room. We used Splosh to create our own dinosaurs. It took a lot of concentration, control and perseverance to use the mouse effectively.

Class Two

We have been reading a story called ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’. It is about a journey of a plastic bag in the ocean and how it puts the animals in danger. We have written a news report to inform the

rest of the school next week.

Class Three

This week in our English lesson we wrote a recount based on our trip to Cadbury World. We created a timeline of the day

to help us remember the key activities.

Class Four

We have been learning about addition using the column method. We had to play a game rolling two multi-digit numbers and adding them together to get near a target number. We had to use our knowledge of place-value and addition.

On Friday (5th October) we had stay and play. I liked showing Mummy the rice, mud kitchen and all of my work on the walls. Mummy really liked looking at all of my work in my book. Mummy was so proud of how hard I am working. Mummy liked meeting the other parents. I had so much fun showing Mummy how much fun I have with all the toys in my classroom. Written by Betsy – age 4.

Page 5 – School news David Smith

On the afternoon of Monday 8th October, David Smith came into school to work with the children. David is a young Scottish high jumper who has represented Scotland in The Commonwealth Games. His proudest moment came when competing in front of friends and family in his hometown of Glasgow in 2014. He hopes to represent GB in the next Olympics. David and Mr Green, ably assisted by their runner Hattie (sports lead for the School Parliament), helped all of the children work on their fitness. They completed a series of sponsored challenges including star jumps, sit-ups, press-ups and bench presses. Afterwards, David gave a whole school assembly talking to the children about his lifestyle, daily routine and diet, hoping to inspire the next generation. Thank you everyone for your sponsorship donations, your generosity raised a fantastic £642 for Team GB athletes.

On Friday 12th October Mr Wong gave a maths mastery presentation to parents. The session covered some of the changes we’ve made at St. Mary’s in our maths curriculum. We explored the use of resources and discussed ways in which parents can help their children with maths at home.

On Monday 15th October Class 3 went to Cadbury World. The day was fun and exciting, there was so much to do! We learnt about the history of chocolate and even got to have a go at making some ourselves. There was also chocolate tasting, chocolate writing and chocolate games. Our favourite part of the day was the amazing 4D experience – we felt like we were on a real roller coaster. Written by Ava age 6.

Page 8 – School news Canopic Jars

At the end of September, Mr Walker set Class 4 a mini homework project. As part of their current topic on Ancient Egypt, the children were asked to research canopic jars. The deadline for the project was this week and the work that has been brought in is phenomenal. There were clay models, posters, videos, masks and power point presentations. Mr Walker loved the variety of the children’s interpretations and could see they have enjoyed and fully understood the topic. Mr Walker is unable to choose a winner from all of the fantastic entries and has declared the whole class a winner! Thank you for all of the time and effort that has gone into this homework.

Pudding is a choice of Christmas ice-cream or a festive biscuit. The cost per lunch is £3.50. Children in key stage two (years 3 – 6) need to pay £3.50. Children in key stage one (years R, 1 & 2) only need to pay £1.25 as £2.25 is funded by the government. There are four options in ParentPay, please select and pay for only one of the following options by 30th November: Red 1 Turkey and Christmas ice-cream pot Red 2 Turkey and festive biscuit Green 1 Vegetable parcel and Christmas ice-cream pot Green 2 Vegetable parcel and festive biscuit Please note there will be no jacket potatoes on the day.

As always, the day we have our Christmas lunch will also be Christmas jumper day. Children are invited to wear non-school uniform on this day including a festive jumper or festive colours. In return, we ask each child to bring in £2. All of the money raised will be sent to St Michael’s Primary School in Nanka, Nigeria, which is the primary school Father

Damian attended as a child. This money helps them buy necessities such as blackboards, chalk, pens and paper which they are seriously lacking.

Christmas Lights

The Henley Christmas Lights working party is again running a competition for three local schoolchildren (one from each school in Henley) to turn on the Henley Christmas lights. Children are invited to draw an A5 picture of a Christmas scene (no computer generated designs please) and return to school by Thursday 15th November. The winning entry will become the cover of the Christmas carol sheet 2018. In addition, the child who designs the winning entry chosen by the Henley Lights committee will be asked to switch on the Christmas lights on Sat 1st Dec 2018 at 5pm. Please do not enter if you are not free on this day. We are asking children to draw their design at home (ideally over half-term) and to help them, each child will be given a piece of white card next week.
