Term 2, Week 8 June 14, 2019
Herman Pushing the car Principal's EditorialIt was a very hot summer day when Herman Trueblood was walking home from a cool dip in the ocean when he noticed a man perspiring profusely as he was trying with the help of his two young sons to push his broken-down car up an incline.
Trueblood looked at the struggling trio and said to himself, "Here is an opportunity for service. You ought to give them a hand." An opposing voice chimed in, "No, it's none of your business. You'll get yourself all hot and dirty. Let them take care of their own responsibility."
Eventually he yielded to the better impulse, put his shoulder to the task and together they pushed the car over the incline and on its way. Before they took off, the father, putting his hand out to Trueblood, said, "I'm very glad that you came along. You had just enough strength, added to ours, to make the thing go."
Trueblood noted, "Years have passed since that hot day, but I can still hear that man saying, "You had just enough strength, added to ours, to make the thing go." There are numerous people around us who are barely making it over their private hill of despair when, with a helping hand, they could make it.
Luke wrote to the early Christians saying, “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, sick, needy and poor, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35
It’s worth a thought.

P & F Meeting
19 June 7:00pm
The P&F have met regularly this year to coordinate events such as Mother’s Day Breakfast. It’s a great way to complete PEP Hours as· The Parent Engagement Program involves an average of 8 hours per term or the payment of $400 in lieu of the participation.
Come along to Meeting on 19th June at 7:00pm as we make plans for the Father’s Day Breakfast and some new fundraising ideas.
Nurturing Young MindsUnderstanding Internet Game Design
What exactly is your child doing in these internet games and why are they spending so much time there?
As internet gaming technology has become more sophisticated over time, they are no longer just ‘games’. They are now ‘virtual worlds’ or computer simulations with layers of game design that do not end. Imagine an incredible exciting world, your child is powerful, maybe famous and all their friends are there too, and where life can be restarted at the click of a button. Why would they ever want to leave?
Red Flags:
• My child has stopped going to school • My child will not join the family for family outings • My child has stolen money to buy online gaming • My child does not have a normal sleeping pattern • My child no longer eats meals with our family • My child’s academic performance has deteriorated • My child has become aggressive when restrictions are placed on their gaming • My child has lied about the true amount of time spent playing internet games • My child has difficulty managing their emotions or dealing with their problems • My child has given up extracurricular activities. • My child only has online friends
Approach 1: DIY - Parents research and experiment to find a solution to extract the child from the game.
Approach 2: Seek help from a professional who can act as an ‘agent of change’- Sometimes the problem requires professional help either with a clinical psychologist or a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
In Australia, internet gaming technology is widely accessible. Increasing your family’s awareness of the effects of internet games on your child’s development will give you tools you need to confidently place restrictions on your child’s time playing games.

Gilson Ravens BasketballThe Gilson Ravens have commenced their second competitive season in the Mill Park Basketball Association. Early grading games have taken place and the team has been pushed up a grade to a higher level of competition.
While the team has played only three games this season, it is looking promising with a big win, a come back win and a close loss on Tuesday as they went down by one point in the final seconds of the game. Great work Ravens and good luck in your next game!

Becoming Historians and ArchaeologistsYear 7 had an incursion with Detector Dave. He has become an urban archaeologist over the past 30 years and loves to share his knowledge with students so they can have a hands on experience with artefacts, coins and exploring with a metal detector to find their own coins.
From looking at coins under magnifying lens that light up, to touching 100 year old relics they learned what continuity and change was by identifying items. Their job now is to research some of these items and try to find more information that helps them learn about progress, eras and living.
In groups, the students were given their own kit with all the necessary equipment to metal detect outside. They really got a taste of what it is to persevere, the excitement of finding treasure and what it is to be a real archaeologist. Over the next few days they will become historians as they research and look more into the 2 artefacts they have chosen to investigate. Thankyou Detector Dave for sharing such a valuable lesson with us.
Casual Dress DayThis Friday (June 21) Secondary students have a Casual Dress Day. The theme; Favourite Sports Clubs.
Students will need to bring a Gold coin donation which will go towards My Mission.
Inter House FutsalWith the final Badminton competitions finishing up, Futsal is ready to take off with our first of four events having taken place this week.
The Senior Boys teams for Barnett and Corliss took to the courts in a nail biting game of Futsal. Barnett took an early lead with Sam C taking advantage of a well placed ball. Corliss however would not go down without a fight and managed a goal later in the second half to put the match into overtime. This overtime period involved a drop off scenario where each minute the teams lost one player from the field. This continued until there were two players left from each team. Randall made the most of an excellent opportunity and nearly secured victory for Corliss however Barnett's key duo of Arash and Melwyn finished of the game with an excellent goal to finish.
Great work teams!
