I am so excited to meet all of the new faces who will be in kindergarten this year. We have a lot of special

activities planned for this year. In September and into October we will be focusing on the changing of the

seasons. For the first two weeks, our theme stories and activities will be about how we change seasons and

specifically the transition to autumn. Then we will start activities that involve apples.

As part of language development I want to have the children use letters and sounds to begin “making

words.” For this reason we will be introducing two letters per week. The letters will not be introduced in

alphabetical order. They will be introduced using a format that facilitates “making words.” For the weeks

in September we will be looking at the letters Mm/Tt, Ff/Nn, and Hh/Aa. By the beginning of October the

children will use these letters for “making words.”

Each week I will also be introducing the children to common sight words. These words will be words that

are found often in early reading materials and are often words that children have difficulty sounding out.

Our first set of words will be I, me, see, like. We will also be working with the word family “at.”

Numbers and Shapes are the basis for math concepts. For the beginning of the year, we will be exploring

early number concepts and making sure that the children have a solid grasp of shapes. In September we will

be looking at the numbers 1 through 6 and the shapes circle, square, and triangles. As we get beyond re-

viewing the numbers and shapes, we will transition to activities such as grouping, ordering, and patterning

with numbers and shapes.

Our writing focus for the month of September will be student names. It is important that the children

learn to write their own name early in the year. We will be printing names using the capital/lowercase for-

mat. It is helpful if you have practiced this at home as well.

We will have a time of sharing each week. On the first week of each month, except for September, the

children will be allowed to bring any item they want to share. They can also tell about something of their

own choice on the first week of the month. On the following weeks, all children will have an opportunity to

share, however, this will be guided sharing. By this I mean that I will be giving you topics for these weeks,

and I encourage you to help your child find something to share that fits this topic. In September sharing will

be as follows:

Sept 5: Summer memory (ticket stub, souvenir, shells, etc.)

Sept. 12: What I love about fall (football, sweaters, fall foods, leaves, etc.)

Sept. 19: My Favorite book (we won’t be reading, but compiling a list to share)

Sept. 26: One apple

Hello everyone! We have had a great summer with many of the FA students coming to the studio and going

up a belt or two. We are looking forward to meeting all the new students on Teambuilding Day! On Team-

building Day we will have a table set up for uniform sizing (full uniform $21.20 and pieces $10.60 each) and

welcome packets. In your welcome packet you will receive a handbook, test questions, and several other in-

formative pages. Also at the table we will be talking to families who have blue belt students about getting

sparring gear. If you are below blue belt level you don’t need to worry about this.

Returning students who tested in June will be testing in November. All new students will be testing in

March and high school students will be in April or May. If you have any questions, please come and talk to us

on Teambuilding Day!

Upcoming Event at the Studio!!! On Wednesday, September 10, we are having Dallas Deli serving hamburgers, hot dogs, chili dogs, baked

beans, and chips from 5-8pm. Love donations are welcome. Also, The Conquerors Strength Team will be per-

forming on the same day at 6pm. We are also hoping to have Safety Kids come and the Wyoming Police Dept.

come on Wednesday to talk to everyone and inspect car seats for free. Everyone is welcome to come and en-

joy the food and presentation.

So….. What does an Instructor Make? By Dojunim Bill Church

In today’s world of money orientated thinking, many people have a set response to us when they find out

we are martial arts instructors. There response is usually, “What do you make doing that?” This has happened

to me more times than I care to think about. So I would like to offer this as a response to all students that are

thinking of someday becoming instructors.

What do we make? Take your pick….

We make students work harder than they ever thought they could.

We make students learn to be safe.

We make students learn to use mental and verbal skills to avoid conflict.

We make parents confident that their child is maturing and able to handle conflict.

We make students honest, courteous and respectful.

We make students understand and fight for the end of prejudice.

We make students responsible for their actions.

We make students have courage and commitment.

We make students learn and apply manners.

We make students learn to treat others like they want to be treated.

We make students learn to not waste time.

We make students take care of themselves so they stay fit.

We make students learn to be kind and understanding towards others.

We make winners in life.

Most of all we make students that can apply new skills to walking and growing stronger with God.

What do we get from this? The rewards are great, but a few of the ones that mean a lot to me are respect,

honor, love, friendship and, of course, a greater walk with God. But the most important reward is a feeling of

accomplishment that we have made a difference. A difference that will last a lifetime and into eternity. No

amount of money can equal that.

Welcome to First Grade!

I can’t wait to meet all of you! We are going to have fun learning, creating, exploring, discover-ing, and playing together this year.

In September, we will be learning about being attentive, obedient, teachable, and kind during our Bible time. Our first lesson is an important one! The kids will learn and practice how to be attentive through “Give Me 5.” The first day they will bring home a booklet to share with you.

Before we begin our world travels on the continent of North America, we will spend two weeks becoming familiar with the 7 continents and oceans. We will stay close to home with our first stop in Michigan and then the United States as a whole.

Animal Classification (mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and insects) is this month’s science theme. Since we are going to be meeting many different animals on our world travels, it will be interesting to learn what makes these classes of animals unique.

We are starting the year off in math with graphing. The kids are going to learn more about each other by tallying and graphing information each week.

In language arts, we will focus on reviewing short vowel sounds with word ladder activities.

See you soon!

7th grade

Grammar this month covers prepositions, direct objects, verbs, and period usage. Rules are discussed in class, and stu-dents will complete several pages during the week. The literature text introduces the students to several excellent authors through various genres: poetry, short stories, selected chapters from books. Our writing will involve note taking and then writing paragraphs from those notes. Students will also need to retell outline notes before writing. Parents, be ready to lend an ear! Journal writing is to be done on four separate days. Topics are provided, but students may write on anything that they wish. Each week a list of assignments will be sent home. In order to help students pace themselves, the work is di-vided into four days. These day divisions are only a suggestion.

8th grade

The grammar text contains 180 days of work. We generally complete one day in class, and the students will do five more days during the week. During class time, we will discuss any questions regarding the previous week’s assignments. Our writing will involve note taking and summarizing. We will be using various techniques to “dress-up” our writing. Story writing from pictures is also introduced. Journal writing is to be done on four separate days. Topics are provided, but students may decide to write about something else. Each week a list of assignments will be sent home. In order to help students pace themselves, the work is divided into four days. These day divisions are only a suggestion.

GWL High School

The grammar text contains 180 days of work. We generally complete one day in class, and the students will do five more days during the week. During class time, we will discuss any questions regarding the previous week’s assignments. In Brit-ish Literature we start with the Venerable Bede and the folk epic Beowulf. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Old English po-etry (in the form of riddles) is also covered this month. Journal writing is to be done on four separate days. Topics are pro-vided, but students may decide to write about something else. Our writing lessons will cover properly understanding a prompt, note-taking systems, avoiding plagiarism, and citations. Each week a list of assignments will be sent home. In order to help students pace themselves, the work is divided into four days. These day divisions are only a suggestion.

Human Anatomy:

Our course work begins with a review of cell biology (structure, organelles, protein synthesis, & mitosis) and an overview of the or-gan systems in the human body. Then we will study the details of different types of tissues (epithelial, connective, cartilage, etc) and glands. We'll also discuss the ability of tissues to be repaired. By the end of the month, we will be learning about our skin, hair, nails and view samples under the microscope.

8th Grade Science:

We begin the year with a history of science, learning about some of the important people who have advanced our knowledge in this important subject. Then we will spend some time learning about the scientific method (making observations, forming a hypothesis, etc.) We'll also discuss some of the limitations of science.

I am so excited to start teaching Spanish this year. Growing up in Costa Rica and having Spanish as my first language will let me share my culture and knowledge with your children this year. My desire for this first semes-ter is not only to encourage them to learn Spanish but also have them “taste” a little of my culture. I know learn-ing a new language can be hard, but I will try my best to teach your children a way to learn in a fun, dynamic, practical and interactive way. My idea is to review first what they have learned and find out where they are. From there I will start teaching them new vocabulary, songs, verses, concepts, questions and sentences that will pro-vide them with the basics in order to have a conversation in Spanish. Some of the activities I will be doing with the kids this first semester include games, crafts, my own Spanish Dictionary, My passport, memorizing songs and verses. Also, once a month we will have a “cultural day” including guest speakers, movies, Hispanic food, exploring other cultures etc…

In order for me to make this year a huge success I will need your help. Keep motivating your children in this learning process. Please speak with me if you have any questions or concerns. I would love to make this class the best experience your kids will have in learning a new language.

LYNDA LEUSCHNER—ANATOMY/8TH GRADE SCIENCE

MARIA QUESADA—SPANISH

LISA LUURTSEMA—PHYSICAL EDUCATION

I'm excited about starting a new year of physical education. Each week will include stimulating, well-balanced physical education activities for the students. Our introductory activity will produce a general warm-up, increasing blood flow to the major muscle groups and usually involve running, tagging, dodging, but also include a variety of locomotor skills (jumping, hopping, skipping, shuffling, galloping) and manipulative skills (dribbling, catching, throwing, kicking trapping, and striking). Our second activity will focus on developing overall fitness with emphasis on cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength and endurance. Lastly, I will introduce activities to develop the abilities the children need to participate in most traditional games such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, bad-minton, and hockey as well as more innovative games such as parachute play, scooter play, and rope play. My area of expertise is fitness and sport, but I do plan on asking other instructors to come and to teach dance as well as gymnastics throughout the year. My primary objectives this year are to foster in children a love of physical ac-tivity and play, to give children as wide a skill, games, and dance experience as possible, and to provide experi-ences which will develop initiative, self-worth, loyalty, honesty, kindness to others, fair play and cooperation.

This is my first year teaching here at Friday Addition, and I am very excited to get have an opportunity to get to know your kids and start building some relationships with them. Because I am new to the Difference Class, things will be a little bit different from last year. We are still going to be incorporating some local missions service opportuni-ties, but much of our class will be focusing on Christian Leadership, what it looks like to be a teenager in today's world, and how we can be an example of Jesus to oth-ers. I'm looking forward to what this school year holds for our class!

2nd – 6th Grade Science

Welcome back! I look forward to seeing all of you at Team Building Day. We

will start our year off with the study of Botany….specifically seeds and leaves.

Some of our experiments will be to dissect a seed, dissolve the flesh off leaves so

we that we can see the skeleton, and discover how leaves are classified. Our 5th

and 6th grade classes will be working on a science notebook to document their

experiments and observations. 2nd – 4th will do activities and experiments but will

not complete a science notebook.

7th Grade Science

Our year begins with learning about the International System of Measure-

ment, commonly called the metric system. We come in contact with the

metric system daily (you may purchase a 2 liter bottle of soda or take a

200 milligram tablet for a headache), and it is used by scientists worldwide.

In class activities will include using units and divisions of the metric system.

As we learn the metric system, our principal objective will be to teach stu-

dents how to use their Science Notebooks. Students will use their Note-

books to record information from the text and what is presented in class.

They will then use this information during processing assignments that challenge them to really

think and apply what they have learned. Homework will be divided into three parts – the Pre-

view (picking out the key points), the organized Reading Notes (recording notes on the reading

they do for each lesson) and the Processing assignment (actively doing something with the in-

formation).

Communication through writing is a gift from God, and I’m looking forward to sharing the gift of writing with all the 5th and 6th graders at Friday Addition this year! In September, we’ll start the year off by developing a “Reasons for Writing” list, introducing the IEW (Institute for Excel-lence in Writing) program, and talking about how spoken and written language can be used to glorify God. In our writing, we will be focusing specifically on “ly” adverbs, strong verbs, and clauses using who/which and because.

All students should come to writing class with the following supplies: a 2” three-ring binder with three divider tabs, marked Resources, Classwork, and Homework; a generous supply of loose-leaf notebook paper (wide-ruled is best); and 2-3 freshly sharpened pencils.

There is no textbook required for the class, and all source materials will be provided. The 5th/6th grade writing class is an academic class, which is new for this year. Writing assign-ments will be evaluated based on a very clear checklist of required elements, and students will earn a number and letter grade at the conclusion of the year. Please remind your student that homework will be assigned each week, with a goal of 15-20 minutes of writing at home, 4-5 days per week.

Whether students claim to love writing or hate writing, our ultimate goal this year will be to learn to write effectively as we seek to achieve personal excellence in our daily lives. See you soon!

LUCY SEAY—5TH/6TH WRITING

MARK SOOY—MUSIC/WORLDVIEW

MUSIC

I'm looking forward this year to teaching the 2nd through 4th grades, since these students are so close in age and musical experience! We will approach the class with a broad focus on Mu-sic Appreciation. This means we study composers, different eras of music, different styles of music, how musical compositions are developed, and other aspects of the musical world. We listen to great music, watch videos of musical performances, participate in mu-sic related activities, and generally learn how music impacts us and the world around us.

Christian Worldview

I've heard some great stories about the impact of clear Christian worldview thinking from stu-dents who have been through this class and other similar training. The course will really focus on giving students a foundational perspective on life as viewed through the Truth of Scripture and the metanarrative (the "overarching story") of Christian Worldview.

Looking forward to an exciting year in Biology! During the first month, we will be-come very familiar with the microscope. Students will learn about the biological classification system and how to use a biological key. We will be discussing the definition of life: what qualifies something as living. Towards the end of the month, we will be discussing our first kingdom Monera. This kingdom is composed of pro-karyotic bacteria (both good and bad). The majority of class time will be spent in laboratory exploration. My prayer this year: as students study this incredible world God has made they may see Him more clearly. Pray for us this year that He would be made known to many students!

I hope you have had an AMAZING summer, having lots adventures and spending time with your favorite people. What great experiences to pull from as we tell stories through art this year in class!

I am SO excited to get started this year teaching the kids about the part of them that is a reflection of God the Creator! To begin on the right frame of mind, all grades will be hearing the story "The Beautiful Oops!" by Barney Saltzberg. Though this is a young children's book, its themes on using creativity to solve problems in art and creating without shame or

fear are good ones for all ages! The kids will respond to the story by solving problems such as turning rips, spills, drips, and "mistakes" into fun and beautiful things.

BARB VANDER PLOEG—MARKET DAY

Hello Grades 2 through 7. I am excited to be bringing Market Day back to Friday Addition. This will be the third time Market Day has been taught at Friday Addition, and it has proven to be a fun and exciting way to introduce Economics Education to our elementary and middle school students.

We will begin the year exploring what the Bible says about Economics and how we are called to use our talents to honor God and serve others. As we learn these principles, we will simultaneously be putting them into practice by preparing for our culminating event “Market Day.” On this day students will take on the role of young entrepreneurs as they sell products they have designed and made themselves. They will then be given the chance to use some of their profits to support “real life” entrepreneurs in the third world.

Keep your eyes open for information coming home regularly since the task of preparing for Market Day will be broken down into small segments. Many of these assignments will need to be completed at home. Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

For now, grab your briefcases and creative thinking caps…we are in for a great year!!

September in Art Exploration will set the stage for the year to come as we talk about the elements of art. The elements include line, shape/form, color, value, texture, and space/perspective. The lesson plans are filled with line play, silhouette exploration, and working in positive and negative space. Think of shapes set against colorful swirling backgrounds and winding lines and fun critters hanging out in beautiful scenery.

Throughout the year there will be structured assignments for the kids to complete, but there will also be times for them to respond to the class through free art. Free art is structured as well, but within the structure there are opportunities for the kids to select their own subjects and mediums, using those that speak to their hearts and abilities. This idea is based on my previous experience using the TAB method, Teaching for Artistic Behavior. If you would like more info on this method, visit their website teaching-forartisticbehavior.org. Our class at Friday Addition will borrow some concepts from this method while also using some traditional methods. You are also welcome to contact me with any questions you might have.

I have lots of fun and interesting things planned for this year. I really hope the kids enjoy their art class experience and learn to love exploring the world of art AND creativity in ways that bring God all the glory! See you in September!
