Headmaster’s Message

I spent the start of the week at Friends’ School, Saffron Walden at the summer meeting of Quaker Heads. It was a great opportunity to meet and to discuss matters of mutual interest. I was struck by the wide range of schools represented within Quaker education; there were colleagues from schools in Ireland, Northern and the Republic, as well as those from Yorkshire, the three other schools in the South as well as ourselves. All schools are different and unique in character, yet share a common bond through the Quaker principles that organise and influence their ethos and character.

All schools are about people: their interactions, multifaceted personalities and varied gifts. Yet Quaker schools seem to me to put people at the very heart of what they do and value the rich tapestry of individuals that make up their school communities. I am delighted that this week’s newsletter focuses on the people that have punctuated the events of the week and even more impressed by their diversity.

All-Weather Pitch News

We need your help with the planning application for the all-weather pitchIf you live in the South Area of North Somerset it would be really helpful if you could contact your ward Councillor before the 20 June and reiterate how important the all-weather pitch is for the school.

You may like to remind them:

• hockey is now played on all-weather pitches so our pupils really do need it to take part in the sport • it will give opportunity to play sport outside the normal school day • most other schools have an all-weather pitch • the Winscombe community survey in 2010 identified the community desire for an all-weather pitch on the sports fields • the proposed location is convenient for both school and community

For your convenience the following link will take you straight to the list of Councillors on the South Area Committee: http://tinyurl.com/l4w7vgh

You are probably aware the South Area Planning Committee of North Somerset Council met on 23 May to consider the planning application. Unfortunately there is an extremely vocal minority, within Winscombe, who would prefer the pitch not to be constructed. They have utilised the planning process to the maximum effect to dispute the planning application with many issues being raised, which have required us to respond. As a result of this the South Area Committee voted to defer the decision until 20 June 2013. At the May committee meeting it did not appear that there were many Councillors speaking in favour of the project. However we know that a number of them quietly support the project but are possibly intimidated by the opposition. So your support would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Blast from the past! The weekend before half-term, Sidcot was visited by three young men from the past! Varut Dechpokket and Raymond Ho were making their first visit to Sidcot since they left in 2002 whilst Jacky Wong was here for his second trip since he left, also in 2002.

Varut, or Art as he was generally known at Sidcot, works for Bank of America / Merrill Lynch in London. He arrived in the West Country in April 1996 and moved into Combe House. During his time here he also lived in Wing House where he became a good friend of the Coates twins, Victoria and Emily. He left Sidcot in July 2002 and attended Imperial College, London, studying Mechanical Engineering for his M. Eng. Degree. On graduating in 2006 he was employed by Credit Suisse as an FX Options Trader - prior to a move in 2010 to Bank of America. Art married Prangchira Kewcharoenwong, who also studied with him at Imperial. They live in Canary Wharf but plan to move out to West London, according to Prang!

Raymond Ho joined Wing House in 1997 moving to School House Boys for his Sixth Form years. After school Raymond studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s - one of the world’s leading centres for art and design education. Raymond lives in Battersea, London and is a Graphic Designer for a leading Retail Design Consultant in Knightsbridge. Raymond has also worked in Sweden.

Jacky Wong arrived at Sidcot at the same time as The Coates Family, in September 1996. Jacky lived in Wing through the Lower Fourth to the Upper Sixth being Head of House in his final year. After school he returned to Hong Kong to study for a degree in Law Enforcement and Security Management. Jacky came back to Sidcot in 2007 and visited the Summer Festival with his partner Gloria, who became his wife in 2011. Jacky is now a National Fitness Manager for Fitness First Hong Kong

Mikki and I were delighted to be able to take the young men and their wives around the Campus. They were all taken aback by the grandeur of the Arts Centre and were pleased to see that they could still recognise their bedrooms in Wing hadn’t changed that much. They were really impressed with the Lunch menu and that they were remembered with so much affection by the Resident Staff.

It’s always lovely to see Old Scholars return and a real thrill to see how well they have grown up and how they have made such choices in their lives.

Another visit from an Old ScholarWe were pleased to welcome Alison Josenhans and her daughter Jennie to Sidcot last week. Alison, daughter of David Lindley, was at Sidcot from 1963-69. She grew up at Combe House and has fond memories of the boarding house. Her father David was housemaster of Combe and taught geography. Alison visited school while in the area sorting the estate of her mother Joyce (Tasker). Alison now lives in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia.

Quaker News

Visit by Quaker Pastor Patrick Muganda from KenyaPastor Patrick Muganda is General Superintendent of Kakamega Yearly Meeting in Western Kenya - a yearly meeting of around 12,000 members - which also supports an orphanage and a number of Quaker schools. Kenya has over 200 Quaker secondary schools and about 1,000 primary. The first schools were founded early in the twentieth century. There are more Quakers in Kenya than anywhere else in the world and so when Patrick Muganda expressed a wish to visit a Quaker School in the UK, we were delighted to welcome him to Sidcot.

Patrick addressed the Senior School at morning assembly telling us about his background in Kenya and how their many Quaker schools operate before going on to attend the Junior School Meeting for Worship. During the course of the morning he spoke with many members of staff and students and spent time with our Quaker student elders, Jess and Nic. It was particularly enjoyable for our Year 10 students when he joined their class for an REP lesson where he was able to describe the Quaker worship that takes place widely in Kenya.

Patrick’s wish is to set up some exchange opportunities between Sidcot and Quaker schools in Kenya. We are all very excited about this proposition and will be staying in contact with Patrick to enable this to happen. Plans will be underway shortly.

Careers & Work Experience News

University Applications Workshop, Tuesday 11 JuneOn Tuesday students in the Lower Sixth attended a workshop on how to make a successful university application. This was led by Jonathan Hardwick who is the South West Director of ISCO (Independent Schools Careers Organisation). Students found out about how to choose a course and an institution and then looked critically at some sample personal statements. They also enjoyed two short role-plays acted out by fellow students to illustrate the pitfalls of the university interview. The students are now embarking on the detailed research they need to do before choosing their courses, drafting personal statements and many will be attending university open days over the summer.

Introducing Sidcot’s Board of Governors

I was at Sidcot from 1949-1954 and am the daughter, niece, cousin, aunt and mother of other Sidcotians. Since leaving I have missed only two Easter Reunions of the Old Scholars; when I was living and teaching in the Middle-East, and when I was President of the Association in 1990-91. Many Old Scholars have a continuing interest in the school and I represent them on the Governing Board, passing on news of the various happenings in present-day Sidcot.

After leaving, I went to Homerton College, Cambridge and trained as an Early Years teacher - retiring after 45 years full-time teaching - as Deputy Head of a large Infant School.

Since retiring I have travelled the world as a Sighted Guide, enabling blind and visually impaired people experience some of the things that we sighted people take for granted. I have sailed, skied, swam, white-water rafted, and ridden horses, camels and elephants - encouraging Vis to enjoy these physical activities too. I have touched the Terracotta Warriors in China, walked part of the Inca Trail in Peru, and watched turtles lay their eggs in Borneo. On one recent trip, a blind lady said: “Do you remember when we saw the snake curled up in the tree above our head, when we were in the canoe?” She hadn’t actually ‘seen’ the snake, but in her ‘mind’s eye’ she had, because I had described it to her some years before. Moments like this have made the last 18 years since retiring so rewarding.

Apart from these wonderful travel opportunities, my hobbies include: acting, singing, riding my (electric) bike, playing badminton and table tennis, and walking my dog and riding my horse in the New Forest where I live.

Seeing Sidcot from the ‘other side’, as a Governor, I realise how much time and effort the Governors put in to help and support the teacher and other staff of Sidcot to enable the present pupils achieve to their highest potential.

I envy those pupils the learning experiences they have, the life-long friendships they will make and the opportunities the school provides to help prepare them for their chosen lives in the future.

Year 7 pool party & barbecue, Thursday 6 JuneYear 7 enjoyed a pool party and barbecue last Thursday after school to celebrate the end of their exams. The inflatable in the pool was a great hit, with everyone enjoying trying to get to the end without falling off! Afterwards we had a delicious barbecue on the terrace. One of the sixth form helpers could not believe how much food the Year 7s ate! The weather was gloriously hot and sunny! Everyone had a fabulous time. Thank you to Sixth Form helpers at the poolside and barbecue, to Year 7 tutors, Mrs Knevett and Mrs House, and to Mr Bateman for running the barbecue.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme News

The Year 10 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award final expedition took place last weekend and the students enjoyed the best possible weather - warm and sunny with a lovely cooling breeze. On the first day, the students traversed Dunkery Beacon (pictured), the highest point in Somerset, and camped in Porlock, near the coast. Given the time of year, there was no rush to get to the campsite, which one group took rather too literally, almost missing the gorgeous sunset over Bristol Channel.

The second day saw a very early start and a walk over Selworthy Beacon, finishing on Minehead seafront. This year’s students managed a record early completion, so well done to all who took part.

To complete the Bronze Award, the students need to get their Skill, Activity and Service completed and signed off as soon as possible and they are warmly invited to continue to Silver Award in September.

Year 7 Eco-treasure hunt, Tuesday 11 JuneYear 7 enjoyed another event on Tuesday after school. With the sun shining on them yet again, Year 7 took part in an Eco-treasure hunt looking for eco sites around the school by identifying photographs of eco places around the campus. Having discovered and collected treasures, back at the Small Meeting House, the Year 7s discussed the Quaker testimonies and talked about Meeting for Worship and other issues relating to the Quakers. This event was kindly organised by members of the Quaker meeting - my thanks to them for a successful event.

Charity News

The Wessex Half Century, 22 June A group of Lower Sixth students are riding a 50-mile loop starting and finishing at Sidcot on the morning of the Garden Party. This is an effort by the students to raise money before going to Tanzania this year and all funds will go to the local community that Sidcot work with there. The students have been training extremely hard to build up to this event and it will be a considerable achievement to cover 50 miles over what is very demanding hilly terrain. Any donations would be most welcome either to the students directly or there will also be an opportunity to donate at the garden party itself.

Textiles Department News

The Textiles department are very pleased to have purchased an eyelet press having received a contribution from the SCPTA towards the cost.

Students have been designing garments which fasten with eyelets and we have struggled with eyelets, eyelet holders and hammers for some time; bruising a few thumbs along the way! Nicky Corbett, Food & Textiles Technician, researched and found an eyelet press, which I know will be in service by the students very shortly. Many thanks to the SCPTA for their contribution.

Edinburgh Festival FringeOur big Death by Shakespeare banner is now adorning the fence by the Sidcot refectory as a constant reminder that we are very close to the performances in Edinburgh. The banner will be accompanying us to Edinburgh as part of our marketing campaign while we are there. The Royal Mile will be crammed with people who are looking and deciding which performances they want to go and see and we are hoping that this banner will help to literally make us stand out from the crowd!

This Saturday marks a real countdown, as most of the cast will assemble again for a full day rehearsal. We will be casting and scripting as well as trying on some of the costumes that have already been made.

LAMDAThis week we awarded yet more LAMDA certificates and medals at a ‘distinction’ level. The results this year have been fantastic and are a testament to the hard work of both Marylin Johnstone, our LAMDA teacher and the participating students. On this occasion, April Barrett and Millie Humphries gained their Level 6 (Bronze) awards for acting, having tackled some very challenging pieces. We are looking forward to the next set of results from more of our students in a few weeks. Good luck to all of them.

We are now recruiting for new students to start LAMDA in September. Students can work individually or in small groups and can gain LAMDA awards in areas such as acting, public speaking and devising. For more information please see Mrs Resuggan or email on [email protected]

Nose to nose with Art! (Year 10 student, Tyus Shattock, works on a large sculptural head)The end of year Student Exhibition is being mounted as I write, and will be spectacular. The exhibition will open on Tuesday June 18, 6.30pm - 8.30pm; with catering by current Year 10 students (as part of their exam work), the fashion show at 7.00pm, and work from DT and Art students on display. It would be wonderful to have lots of visitors at the opening and I am hopeful that the creators of the works on show will also be there for the opening, to talk to visitors about their work.

If you can’t make the opening, the exhibition will be open to the public at selected times over the festival weekend and following week, please see the festival brochure and arts centre publicity for times.

Message to all examination students in Years 11, 12, 13 & SFFOur art technician Claire Settle is putting the work up now. As the work has already been moderated, we are making a selection of the best work for this show, but planning that all students should be represented by one work of art at the very least. If you have works that you really want exhibited, please write your name and the art works on the list, which is with Claire, and she will endeavour to get them mounted, hung, or otherwise displayed.

If we neglect any works, I apologies in advance - we suffer from constraints of time and space.

Year 9 Drawing exerciseThe images here are by Catherine Pink’s Year 9 art class, a wonderfully surrealistic drawing exercise. Sadly they will not be in the exhibition, but if you poke your head into the painting and drawing studio upstairs, they may well be on display in there - along with other work from KS3 students.

Maintenance Department News

A lot’s happened at the allotmentI first got the go ahead to maintain this piece of land in late February, so I only had a few weeks to turn what was effectively a piece of wasteland into an area ready for cultivation in spring.

The first job was to dig over the grass and level the whole area; this was quickly done with the aid of a mini digger. Next came the erecting of the greenhouses and sheds and creating the paths. Electrical cables were trenched in to provide power for the buildings and a water capturing system was set up. The whole area had to be thoroughly rabbit proofed and several loads of manure were dug in. It was a bit of a rush, but I now have a fantastic base to work from. Having established the area this growing season, the plan from next spring is to hopefully get the pupils involved in cultivating the area with me. I already work with a group of senior pupils on the Green Hill garden vegetable plot but this new area will give us scope to grow so much more.

I plan to provide some fruit and vegetables for the school kitchens and hopefully lots of cut flowers for the school as well. The area also allows me to cultivate all my summer and winter bedding from seed or small plug plant and to grow lots of new plants from cuttings.

In sweltering heat the cycling club ventured out for another ride this week. We had two major climbs; Shipham and the category 1 Cheddar Gorge. Pictured are the lads on top just after cresting the gorge.

After Cheddar we continued to the top of Burrington Combe and negotiated the super fast decent to the bottom and headed back through Langford on to the A38 towards Sidcot. This week, David Cuthbert delivers the last in the current ‘ArtTalks’ series. His talk, titled: Eva Hesse 1936-1970, provides an insight into one of the most influential, ground breaking artists of the mid 20th century. She is celebrated as a pioneer of ‘feminist’ art, despite her career being cut so short by illness. Her innovative use of materials, questioning of what it is that makes ‘sculptural’ value, complete immersion in the business of exploring and cultivating the physical properties of string, wire, latex, fibre glass, textiles, and paint has left us a unique and inspiring body of work.

David’s talk is free to attend and begins at 7.00pm on Thursday 13 June. Whether you are new to art or want to further your knowledge, this is a great session to come along to.

Year 9 Rounders v Kings of Wessex, Thursday 13 June - Sidcot 7 - Kings 6½This was a competitively fought return match against Kings, following an away encounter earlier in the term. Kings went into bat first and Sidcot immediately demonstrated a determined eagerness to win. Fielding was sharp and alert and Kings chances of scoring even half-rounders were minimised by deft ball handling and quick decision making. Katie Withers fielded well from backstop, Emmy Goddard Watts proved very effective on second post and was ably backed up by Yanna Simmons and Genevieve Lane in the deep positions. Despite some good hitting from Kings they only managed a score of 4 by the end of their batting innings. Sidcot also batted well but Kings fielded with a similar quickness and skill to Sidcot. Our girls, however, proved the better side at sneaking the halves to 2nd with fast running between posts. The score at the half way stage was 5½ - 4 to Sidcot.

In the second innings Sidcot fielded equally well. Kerenza Dickie moved onto 2nd post and took some really good catches and ‘stumps’. Genevieve and Emmy looked after the deep field really well, covering the gaps, moving to position quickly, making good catches and throwing accurately in to appropriate posts. Kings were successfully held to a final total of just 6½ rounders - a score that was surely easily surpassable.

Our girls came in to bat looking confident. Kings, however, were not to roll over and be beaten easily. They fielded superbly and Sidcot were forced into taking big risks to try to secure half-rounders and time after time players were stumped out. With good balls ticking away and only three players left in, Sidcot found themselves still chasing the game! Just an elusive half was required. With just two good balls remaining and the score at 6½ each, Charlotte Dolman managed to strike the ball sufficiently to have a chance of getting to 2nd post. She took the chance marvellously, using her speed to reach the post and win the game. This was a super performance and a lovely game to umpire. Extremely good natured and friendly, good skills on show and great sportsmanship to boot.

Well done to all.

Year 10 Rounders v Kings of Wessex, Thursday 13 June - Sidcot 6 - KOW 9½This was an excellent game of rounders on which to finish the season - both teams saving their best performances for this their last game. Putting Kings into bat, the Sidcot girls worked hard to suppress the good hitting and fast running between the posts of their opponents. Limiting Kings to just 4½ rounders encouraged Sidcot into thinking that this was a game they really could win. However, Kings had other ideas - putting on a superb display of sharp and decisive fielding. With many batters either being caught or stumped out at first, Sidcot did well to reply with 2 rounders.

During the second innings the game continued at the same furious pace with both teams showing great skills and vision in their play. Sidcot however, very nearly stole the game with their own terrific display of fielding, which started with three reaction catches at 3rd post by Diana, followed by a super backstop catch by Katie Morris. Charlotte Pittaway and Anna Edis were kept busy out in the field, as was Caroline Green at 2nd post. If Sidcot could have just started as they had finished then they surely would have won this match, but this was a lovely game of rounders to umpire and hopefully it will instill some much needed confidence to the girls, as they now prepare for their tournament at the end of the term. Cricket: Sidcot v Warminster - Sidcot lost by 180 runs // Sidcot v Clifton High - Sidcot won by 8 runsThis has been a week of ups and downs for Sidcot Cricket Club. The less said the better about the game against Warminster School on Saturday as Sidcot came up against a side with no less than six county players. Suffice to say that this was far too strong an outfit for us to take on and the result rather speaks for itself. On a happier note, largely the same side took on Clifton High School on Tuesday and in an exciting contest came away winners by 8 runs. Sidcot batted first and openers MacArthur and Fletcher once again both made starts but failed to really capitalise on the opposition’s inexperienced bowling. Of the eight who batted all contributed to the score line of 59 runs at the end of our allotted overs; MacArthur and Elkins top scoring with 15 and 10 respectively. With a below par score accurate bowling was the order of the day and we were not to be disappointed. Joe Jonas continues to show what a prospect he is by collecting 4 wickets for 14 runs. He was ably supported by Piers Langford who took 2 and captain Fletcher who returned with 1 wicket, as did MacArthur. All bowlers were supported by splendid fielding and the old adage that catches win matches was certainly proven in this match. Elkins, MacArthur, Oxley, Fonseca and Rogers all took great catches. The final Clifton wicket fell on the last ball of the day to give Sidcot a victory by 8 runs.

In baking hot sunshine, Sidcot took on a side from Bristol Cathedral School on Thursday. Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, a decent BCS batting outfit were kept in check in the early overs by openers Sascha Schlatter and captain Will MacArthur. However, the quality of the bowling deteriorated as the innings progressed as far to many wides and no balls were delivered, gifting the opposition runs. Wickets from Saul Fonseca, Finn Finch and a brace from Joe Jonas reined the batsmen in a touch but the closing score of 60 was always going to be challenging. MacArthur looked in fine touch with the bat, ably supported by Adam Elkins and it looked very much as if we would chase down the runs with overs to spare. However, a needless run out accounted for Elkins and a poor shot saw the captain back in the pavilion. This slowed the run rate somewhat and left the chase for victory in the hands of the inexperienced Langford and Jonas. These two looked comfortable but with their departure things looked ominous. However, enter the swashbuckling Schlatter who proceeded to dispatch the bowling to all parts of the ground. Once again we were in the hunt but unfortunately Sascha ran out of overs and batting partners and the game was lost. Nevertheless, this was an entertaining afternoon.
