Newsletter #14 2019
18 April 2019
Dear Parents,
„Sleep Matters‟, according to Jared Saletin (Brown University in Boston). Jared was one of the presenters at the conference I
attended in Dubai in the March Holidays.
The first point he made, is that sleep relies on the privilege of being able to do it. He reminded us of a previous speaker, a
10-year-old girl from Alleppo in Syria who had been trapped in the city while fighting had raged around her between rival
forces. She had her „privilege‟ of regular uninterrupted sleep taken from her by the constant noise and fear the fighting
created.
Sleep‟s value to us is in a number of areas. The first being good health. We need sleep to give our muscles a chance to
recover and for children, their bodies a chance to grow. Recent research also indicates that sleep is essential for learning. It
seems to be the time that we process our „memories‟ and bank the things we are trying to remember/learn, and discard the
memories we don‟t need to keep.
Now how much sleep does Jaryd recommend for teenagers? I am sure you will be as surprised as I was, to learn that he
recommends 9¼ hours. He did his research with 40 000 teenagers and concluded that most of them are not sleeping
enough. Teenagers naturally want to go to bed later and should be able to sleep later. However, our school system does not
allow for this and so they may miss a little sleep every night. This adds up to a weekly „deficit‟ which they then try and make
up over the weekend. This is possible by them sleeping later on the weekend mornings, but becomes counterproductive
when they sleep away half the day. This then leads to a secondary problem, namely the disruption of their normal sleep
pattern. What can be done about this? Well Jaryd did suggest that a short nap in the afternoon was found to be valuable.
However, the nap should be short and should not allow for deep sleep as this will again disrupt the normal sleep cycle of the
person.
So what were Jaryd‟s suggestions for teenagers? He said that parents can still help manage a teenager‟s sleep to ensure that
they get enough sleep. The way that they could do this is:
1. Have a regular bed time
2. Keeping the bedroom calm, clean and dark
3. Charge the cellphone outside their bedrooms
4. Switch off all „blue light‟ in their bedrooms
5. Manage children who are involved with late night gaming and put a stop to this on school nights
I am hoping these notes on sleep are helpful in how you assist your child to be well rested and ready for school each day.
Jan Van Riebeeck Derby
We enjoyed a wonderful morning at Jan van Riebeeck Hoërskool last Saturday. Jan van Riebeeck were excellent hosts and we

Under 19C Netball - 14-6
Under 16A Netball - 26-6
Under 16B Netball - 18-5
Under 14B Netball - 8-5.
Well done to the following teams who drew their matches:
Under 19 Girls Hockey - 0-0

Exam Times for Second Term
The exam timetable has been released and you will see that our exams start on 16th May 2019 (for Grades 10, 11 and 12)
and 20th May 2019 (for Grades 8 and 9). This is a few days earlier than other schools in Cape Town. The reason that we
need a few extra exam days is that our large subject choice and subject combinations mean we need to extend the exam
period to avoid clashes in the timetable. Please see the timetable attached. overleaf.

World Book Day, Tuesday 23 April 2019
On Tuesday, 23 April 2019 (the day we return to school next week), we are celebrating World Book Day at Camps Bay
High School. On this day pupils are invited to dress up as their favorite book or comic character (Marvel and DC included).
There will be prizes awarded in cultural slot for the best dressed or most authentic character. Last year I dressed up as
Captain Haddock from the Tintin Series and the year before as Indiana Jones from Raiders of the lost Ark. Sadly my outfits
did not attract any of the big prizes (or small). The focus of the day is to promote reading and we believe this is a fun way of
doing it. Pupils who do not wish to dress up must come in normal school uniform.
French Exchange Video
Our French Exchange Group has produced this fun clip of their time overseas. Thanks to Mrs. Sehnke and Mr. Nyathi for all
they did to make this trip happen. https://youtu.be/Yqy_j97x2Sw
Mrs. Sehnke would like to thank Hannah Fowler and Kayla Kohn for this video, as well as everyone who supplied pics and
videos.
Girls Rugby
Our Rugby Girls played their
first match ever last Friday.
This was a historic moment
for sport at Camps Bay High
School. They played at City
Park vs Spine Road High who
are a big school known for
their sports. Well done to
the Girls for drawing their
match 10-10. Special
mention to Aalia Dramat who
scored 2 tries.
Life Science Experiment
Our Grade 12 Life Science students are hoping to hatch some chickens in this experiment - due date 6 May! Watch this
space!-
ACTA "Cutest Pet" Competition

create QLICKED online learning. They will be offering Maths (Grade 8 - 12) and Physical Science (Grade 10 and 11)
Workshops to help prepare for the upcoming exams. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram or YouTube and encourage your
children to as they offer online lessons on difficult topics. Please see their advert at the end of this newsletter.
First XV Rugby Team Make Top 100
This week, Camps Bay High School had the wonderful honour of making it onto the week‟s top 100 performing Rugby 1st
teams in the country. The top 100 rankings on 16 April 2019 saw Paarl Roos Gym first, Grey College second and Paarl Gym
Third. Selbourne College was 18th on the list and our local Bishops made 24th place. Rondebosch was in 33rd place while
other Cape Town boy‟s schools like Wynberg was on 48th position, above Pretoria Boys in 55th position. Another top Cape
Town Rugby school is SACS who was in 66th position. It was quite a moment to have Camps Bay High Schools first rugby
team make 100th spot on this list. A quick glance down the 100 schools would seem to make us the only co-ed school in
Cape Town on the list. Well done to our boys who have started the season with 4 wins in a row. We know that our
sporting ethos is not one where winning is everything but it is nice when we find ourselves in this position for a moment, to
stop and enjoy it. See the link below for the top 100 ranking list.

We are looking for balls of wool, squares that have been knitted or volunteers to knit squares (see pattern below) to make
up Dog Blankets for Fur Get Me Knot. (https://furgetmeknot.org/ )
Julie Marzio, Josie Hon and their team are embarking on a kennel revamp project in Westlake which the blankets will go to
keep the Westlake animals warm.
Learners and parents may drop off the wool or squares at reception and if you would like to volunteer, please e-mail Michele
Harvey [email protected] .
Is your child struggling to study?
Upon browsing the net and analysing articles on this exact topic, it becomes apparent that there are many
different forms of improving our memory and ability to soak up information. Here is a quick list of a few that I
quite liked:
1. Speak Out Loud Instead of Simply Reading
2. Reward Yourself with A Treat
3. Teach What You Have Learned
4. Draw Diagrams
5. Times New Roman is the Fastest Font to Read
6. Use Apps to Block Distracting Sites
7. Watch a Documentary on the Topic
8. Create Flashcards for Quick Memory Buzz
It is never easy to find what works for us right away, this takes time. My personal favourites are numbers 3 and 7.
Not only does it resonate with what we do here at Qlicked, it's also a key component to allowing our learners to
properly understand. Teaching a concept back to the person who taught us allows us to understand the why and
not just know the how.
Have a great first week back at school with your children. For any help with Maths and Science, tell your children
to subscribe and let the questions fly!
