Principal’s Pen Taking Flight When I was a little boy, a long time ago in a land far, far away, I used to be fascinated by the thought of flying – and not just in rocket ships! I would run through the house at top speed and volume with my arms outstretched (my best imitation of an airplane) – frequently knocking things over, until my dear patient mother had had enough and gently threw me outside – where it would continue. Usually I ended up in the barn where I would put chicken feathers in my shirt sleaves and jump from the loft into a pile of hay (usually flapping my new “wings”). I would do this until I was so tired that I could barely stand, at which point I would slowly “fly” back home, stopping only to watch with envy, the hawk or eagle that happened to be gliding overhead. As I fell through the door, feathers and all, I’d announce to my mum that I was exhausted. Looking back now, it comes as no surprise that my favourite Bible passage is Isaiah 40:29-31: 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint this issue Uniforms Teacher Websites and Blogs School Photos PO Box 775 Grace Court Busselton WA 6280 p: (08) 9754 1144 f: (08) 9754 1142 e: [email protected] w: www.cornerstone.wa.edu.au www.cornerstone.wa.edu.au DATES to REMEMBER Thursday August 22 High School Athletics Carnival Friday August 23 Primary School Athletics Carnival Aug 29-31 Cert II 2A Outdoor Education Expedition Sep 3-6 Year 8 YWAM Camp Perth Thursday September 5 Year 6 Local Government Excursion Wednesday September 11 Free Dress Day Year 7/8 Campfire Evening Thursday September 12 Pre-Primary Parent Assembly Wednesday September 18 Secondary Showcase Thursday September 19 School Photo Day TERM DATES Thurs 25 July - Friday 27 Sept Youth Groups: CORE Youth - Years 7 to 9 Friday night 7-9pm at Cornerstone 0418 833 994 Julian/Karlien Xtol Youth Group - Year 10 + Friday nights 7-9pm $4 entry Busso Bretho campsite 0417 937 238 Margie 0418 216 087 Graeme Band Auditions Have you ever wanted to be in a band? Principal’s PenTaking FlightWhen I was a little boy, a long time ago in a land far, far away, I used to be fascinated by the thought

of flying – and not just in rocket ships! I would run through the house at top speed and volume with

my arms outstretched (my best imitation of an airplane) – frequently knocking things over, until my

dear patient mother had had enough and gently threw me outside – where it would continue. Usually

I ended up in the barn where I would put chicken feathers in my shirt sleaves and jump from the loft

into a pile of hay (usually flapping my new “wings”).

I would do this until I was so tired that I could barely stand, at which point I would slowly “fly” back

home, stopping only to watch with envy, the hawk or eagle that happened to be gliding overhead. As

I fell through the door, feathers and all, I’d announce to my mum that I was exhausted.

Looking back now, it comes as no surprise that my favourite Bible passage is Isaiah 40:29-31:

29 He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

30 Even youths grow tired and weary,

and young men stumble and fall;

31 but those who hope in the LORD

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint

Canteen Helpers RequiredThe Canteen is needing more helpers who are able to help fill the canteen roster. Of particular need are volunteers for Thursdays and Fridays, 11:30 to 1pm. Mrs Shipton has said that; ‘You don’t need to be a chef - just know how to make sandwiches and heat food in the oven and put it into a bag. You do not need to serve at the counter or use the till if you don’t feel comfortable.’ Let her or the office know if you would like to serve our kids in this way.

Uniform MattersMichelle Shipton wishes to advise that she now holds a number of unmarked secondary tracksuit tops, jumpers and track pants in uniform shop that have been taken from the lost property box. They are un-labelled, and if unclaimed in the next week or so, she will sell as second-hand items. See her if you think some of these items might be yours.

Staff Websites and BlogsSeveral Secondary teachers have been utilising the virtual world to extend their resources to students, and have set up websites & blogs as a means of communicationParents can start accessing them as well. Here are the

addresses of several, but more may be communicated in coming editions. http://amudala.weebly.com/http://mrtullyshistorypages.weebly.com/http://christopherpoole.weebly.com/

Secondary ShowcaseThe Secondary Showcase is scheduled for Wednesday September 18, and it’s now time to mark this occasion into your diary. As we only have one Secondary Assembly per term that parents attend, we have stepped up the content of what is presented and made it very worthwhile to view. It will give a good overview of a large range of work students have been completing.

Uni CampsWe have a Uni Camp being organised for week 3 of Term 4 for any interested year 11/12’s. Speak to Miss Needham for more information.

Final Day for Year 11 Students NotificationThis year, the final date for Year 11’s will be Friday November 22nd. This is an adjustment from the past, so parents need to be aware of the change

Lateness and AbsencesWe are wishing to press home the importance of students being at school on time and the need for the College to be advised of absences.This is an area that is increasingly becoming problematic with some families and students, and we need to express strongly that a much firmer approach will be taken in the future on infringements. This is more than just about school operations, but is a legal requirement that the school needs to fulfil. So, simply put, students MUST be at school by 8:35am. Any student who will be absent on the day MUST have advice of this provided to the school via email or phone by 9:30am.

Athletics CarnivalsAthletics Carnivals are scheduled for this week, hopefully with sunshine also on the agenda!Secondary students (7-12) will travel to Bunbury on Thursday, and Primary students (Year 3 - 6) on Friday. The events will be held at the Bunbury Regional Athletics Arena, and all parents and extended family members are encouraged to come and cheer on students. Forecasted weather is looking encouraging at this point in time. See you there!

Primary AssemblyThe Year 1 classes are to be congratulated on a wonderful Assembly last week, acting out the story from Max Lucado’s book, ‘You Are Special’. Well done to Miss Durell, Mrs Sully, and their amazing little actors for a very delightful and entertaining presentation, which reminded us that we are all precious and are worth celebrating.The next Primary Assembly is scheduled for Thursday September 12 at 9:00am. This will be hosted by the Pre-Primary classes.

School PhotosOur annual school photo day is to be held on Thursday September 19. There will be a few classes who will have their photos taken on Friday September 20th, but those affected by this will be advised. All students from Year 1 to 12 are required to wear their full winter formal uniform on this occasion.

Free Dress DayA free dress day is on the way to fundraise for Compassion. Wednesday September 11, $2 to participate. Primary theme is a ‘Book Character’, Secondary students theme is ‘Careers’. We look forward to the colourful creations!
