As new Principal of the school, I can honestly say that I was very proud of the young people and the commitment of my staff and the way it all went so well. We were most delighted to have with us Simon Weston OBE, Falklands War Veteran, who very kindly agreed to present the prizes to our outstanding youngsters. He gave a very inspirational speech and captivated the audience; you could have heard a pin drop. We have a lot of wonderful support here at George Green’s and we were very lucky to have the following people present prizes for us. The Prime Warden from The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, Mr Simon Robinson, presented our newly adapted award the Maritme Art Award, this was presented to Hong To along with a cheque for £100. Mr Chris Seow from the Honourable Company of World Traders presented the World Traders Award for Business to a very happy Keegan Canning, his mum and dad were very proud as well. This year we added a new award to represent the hard work that Kenny Frederick undertook: this was called the ‘’Kenny Frederick – Rights Respecting Champion award, this was presented to Jordan Barker by our Chair of Governors, Captain Philip Wake, who congratulated him on his achievements and I think may have shed a tear! Ms Cientanni made an excellent job of presenting the evening as usual. We had some wonderful performances, all put on by the music department; these were spectacular as usual and the final piece by the school choir was mind blowing. The Tall Ship Company were thanked by the pupils who sailed with them for 7 days. Mr West made an excellent video and this was shown for the audience to appreciate the fun they had aboard the brig ‘Stavros’, a beautiful sailing ship. A very special thank you to, Joanne Taylor and the team from The East Wintergarden who made us so welcome and made the evening run so smoothly. Thank you also to all the parents /carers of those receiving awards, we thank you for the support and encouragement you give them, they are a credit to their families and themselves.

1Issue 10 - November 8th 2013

Principal’s WelcomeGEORGE GREEN’S SCHOOL - PRIZEGIVING EVENING 24th October 2013

On the 24th October it gave me great pleasure to see the George Green’s School staff, students, family and friends joined together at our 10th annual Prize-giving Award Ceremony held at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf.

The Prime Warden from The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, Mr Simon Robinson, presented our newly adapted award the Maritme Art Award, this was presented to Hong To

along with a cheque for £100.

We had some wonderful performances, all put on by the music

department; these were spectacular as usual and the final piece by the school choir was mind blowing.

Hello SAM LearnersDrums roll please!

The best SAM Learner in Year 7 is Tuslima Miah. 100% of the homework done online and 100% correct!

84% of the Year 7 students made an attempt at completing their SAM Learning homework and 78% of the Year 7 students did 100% of the work set for them.

Well, well, well... Do I have to understand Year 7 are better learners than Year 8? I do not believe this - all different, all equals... and everybody should try harder at completing their homework

I would like to congratulate everybody who took part in the learning journey. Remember, if you have an issue using SAM Learning, please come and find me after school in room 322

Happy learning journey

LRC CORNERWelcome back. We hope your first week back has been a good one.

We have been very busy getting lots of new books ready for you, so remember to look out for all the exciting new fiction that will be on the shelves very soon.

This week’s special mentions are:-

Mr Harris’s 8.4 Accelerated Reading class. The whole class is absolutely fantastic, especially, Christopher Barth, Kirsty Goodwin, Samia Islam and Anisur Mohammed Rahman. These pupils are going ‘quiz crazy’. Well done to all. The boy verses girl battle goes on between Mohima Begum who has passed 16 quizzes and Mizan Mohammed who has passed 19. This is truly amazing so well done both of you.

Ms Dann’s 8.6 Accelerated Reading class are making fantastic progress too. A special mention goes to Jason Lam who has taken 8 quizzes and passed all of them. And to Larry Simmons who has taken 6 quizzes and passed all of them.

A special mention must also go to the following group of girls:- Shannon Clark, Emily Houlding and Deanna Korotkova - who, in their last lesson had a fantastic conversation with Pat about their books and have become really serious readers. Pat has been really impressed with their maturity and enthusiasm. Well done girls, way to go!!

This week we have a book review for you from Suneha Aktar in 7T

I recommend the book Butterfly Summers by Anne-Marie Conway. This is because when you read the blurb, you can tell that something bad is going to happen when Becky finds out she has an older sister and that her Mum has been lying to her. Becky shouts at her Mum and then runs upstairs. When Becky comes down stairs later, she finds her Mum collapsed on the floor. After Becky’s Mum gets better, Becky finds out that her older sister had died in a lake when she was just 2 years old and would have been 24 if she was still alive. Becky realises that her ghost friend, Rosa-May is her dead sister. Becky tells Rosa-May that she didn’t know that they were sisters, but Rosa-May pulls Becky into the lake and tries to drown her. Becky’s Mum shouts and screams for Becky.

This book is a heart warming and unforgettable story and I rate it 5 stars. It is my opinion that pupils in years 7 – 9 would love it too so should read it.

Thank you Suneha Aktar that was a lovely review and it was very good of you to share that with us.

Anyone can have a book review printed in the Newsletter. All you have to do is write one out and give it to Pat before Wednesday and she will put it in for you. Why don’t you have a go at writing a review too.

That is it for this week. Have a lovely weekend and remember…read, read, read…….

World Marathon challenge 2013On Tuesday October 22nd, Miss Awoberu and Mokbul Hussain went to Lea Valley Indoor Athletics Centre to take part in the World Marathon Challenge. The aim of the challenge was to, in our teams, run 211 laps in total in an attempt to beat Paula Radcliffe’s world record of 2.15.25. It sounds easy but let us tell you, we are still sore today. As well as trying to break Paula Radcliffe’s record, we were running against teams all over the world at the same time. We didn’t break the record unfortunately but it was an amazing experience, raising funds for Save the Children.

We will be doing it again next year and we hope more of you will join us!

Miss Awoberu & Mokbul Hussian

MAT CornerOn Tuesday, I went on a trip to King’s College, London as part of the Brilliant Club. I went, along with other students from Year 7 and Year 8, who had been specially selected, and we got to meet our PhD mentor. This tutor will be teaching us over the next few weeks. We were also given lectures in which we learnt more about University, what it can offer and what the learning environment is like. I think the best part was when we had a tour around the campus. I loved looking at the historical buildings. One of the things I learnt on the trip was that even with a certain type of degree, it can still open doors for you. For example, if you did a degree in History, you also gain good people skills and improve on talking to a big audience. This can also open many doors like becoming a teacher, researcher, or a kind of recruiter.

Look out for me as I will be coming round the school to introduce myself. Special mentions from Ms Dalling, EnglishFor the last few weeks, Room 512 has transformed into a mini-amphitheatre for 10.1’s show-stopping performance of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge. Rising stars treading the boards included: Mikon, Henry, Ellise, Lauren, Lurelle, Nouhaila and cameos from Nahid, James and Iqbal. (Props courtesy of Subiata and Fahim.) It’s been an absolute pleasure to read one of my favourite plays with you all. You all surpassed yourselves putting characters and themes on trial on Tuesday in terms of forwarding arguments, active listening and group work. Simply amazing.A very special well done to Tahmid Khan in 8U (English 8.3) for crafting a superbly sinister tale: The Hairhanger borrowing ideas about character and motif from Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected. It was so brilliant that even the class were mistaken into thinking it really was a Roald Dahl story. Thank you Tahmid; you are a very talented storyteller and we really look forward to hearing more of your work.
