the result of an optimal cooperation between different departments. Another great example from my point of view: the FG FlowGuard. Even though we still face one or two challenges today, it is also an absolutely innovative product that will enable us to expand our product portfolio for cooling lubricants.

What does that mean at the end of the day? In my opinion, innovation and openness to new ideas are essential factors for a healthy future for the Filtration Group. That is why I would like to take this opportunity once again to reach you as our customers and partners: I hope that I have been able to convey to everyone who has met me personally so far that I am happy to accept any good idea and take a closer look at it as far as I can. I would like to take this message with me on a journey to all those with whom I have not had any personal contact before: the Filtration Group Research and Development department is open to all ideas, in order to work with you to make the world safer, healthier and more productive.

With this in mind, I wish us all a successful year 2018 and an even better 2019! Yours Marco Bautz

Editorial

Dear Readers, The last issue of the FG Newsletter and Christmas 2018 are coming up. Even if this should not be the only thing in the foreground, everyone who thinks about Christmas thinks about presents. This year, I personally made the biggest gift to myself earlier this year: joining the Filtration Group in the area of const-ruction as a professional milestone in combination with returning to my roots in Bretten near Karlsruhe. Some time has passed since I started and I am still looking forward to this step. A great working environment, a motivated team, challenging tasks - what more could I ask for? Within Filtration Group, I have now had the opportunity to partici-pate in numerous exciting projects and to realize my passion for innovative, future-oriented products. Examples? The new Pi 59040 and Pi 59063 return line filters, which are characterized by a fully plastic solution and are currently definitely looking for their competition. At the same time, this design has enabled us to achieve significant weight savings, which benefits both us and our customers. I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to all those involved, because such success is always

Marco Bautz - Head of Research and Development

PRODUCTION OF FREEZE-DIRED FOODS

Freeze-dried fruits are nutritious, tasty „lightweights“ and offer genuine fruit enjoyment. They hardly differ from fresh products in terms of nutritional value, taste and color. Freeze-dried fruits can be used to make cereals or muesli bars a perfect breakfast or a tasty snack and provide a natural taste kick.

Taste, that comes from the cold

HOW DOES FREEZE-DRYING WORK?

Freeze-drying works according to the principle of sublimation: Selected, freshly harvested raw materials are gently removed from the ice after freezing, while the cell structure of the original product is retained. Under vacuum, water has the property of changing directly from the frozen to the gaseous state. The freeze-dried product loses a large part of its weight, but retains its typical properties such as taste, structure and nutrients.

WHAT DOES FILTRATION GROUP CONTRIBUTE?

Our customer is a young and dynamic company that has developed to one of the world‘s leading specialists in the field of freeze-drying. The company offers an extensive portfolio of high-quality freeze-dried products for industrial applications, such as: use in breakfast cereals or muesli bars. After the freeze-drying process, the product is again mixed and refined according to customer specifications.

The freeze-dried product is fed via a collecting container on the 1st floor and a downcomer pipe to a mixing drum on the ground floor. There the product is mixed and subsequently fed to the packaging via various conveyor belts. During transport on the conveyor belts, the freeze-dried products react with the ambient air to form a sticky substance. The sticky dusts resulting from abrasion during transport and mixing are extracted by the FG dedusting unit SFR-09 006 DN-130 S1S S1 SO. The dust becomes free-flowing again through the supply of filter aids.

CUSTOMER BENEFIT

■ The dedusting system supplied by Filtration Group prevents product deposits in the production hall and thus contributes to the protection of the employees. This significantly reduces the amount of cleaning required for the machines

■ The filter material used achieves a very high separation efficiency in the fine dust range

■ Longer element life due to the use of filter aids HI 26 ■ Optimum flow conditions in the filter housing due to the use‚ of conical filter elements

Filtration Group offers technical solutions for the African mining industry

RELIABLE POWER WHEN IT COUNTS

Engines and gearboxes of construction machinery must always reliably withstand extreme requirements under the toughest climatic and environmental conditions. Due to the high ambient summer temperatures in South Africa, it is important to install oil coolers to maintain a sufficient operating temperature so that the viscosity of the oil is high enough to lubricate the mechanical components. In winter, on the other hand, a low temperature can cause the oil viscosity to be very high during start-up, and in some cases up to 2,800 cSt is reported.

Lubetech uses duplex filters for its lubrication systems and oil cooling systems. The lubrication systems used in mills must be fully operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week under difficult mining conditions. The system requires absolute robustness and operational reliability. Filtration Group duplex filters provide the best results with these drastic viscosity changes. With flow rates of 35 - 300 l/min, the filter housings operate trouble-free in the heat dissipation ranges of 10 - 20°C. The filter housings are designed for a high flow rate of 35 - 300 l/min. Filtration Group offers the customer here maximum performance as well as permanently high reliability for the required cleanliness for an extension of the service life of mechanical components as well as effective filtration.

Do you have a smartphone? A computer? Then you use raw materials every day that are mined, among other things, in African soil. About a third of the world‘s raw material reserves are found in Africa. Mining is a profitable economic factor there. Filtration Group ZA has found with Lubetech another partner for the distribution network on the South African market who offers engineering solutions for the mining industry. Lubetech specializes in the construction of lubrication and cooling systems for the mining industry in Africa and South Africa.

Filtration Group defines new focus market - the paper industry

7Newsletter Filtration Group GmbH

Highly efficient, trouble-free production processes are required in order to survive the tougher competition in the paper and printing industry. Filtration Group offers powerful and durable hydraulic and lubrication filters for every requirement to keep production equipment running and protect hydraulic systems from contamination.

PAPER MANUFACTURING

The production of paper is based on a concept that is still valid today, around 2000 years after its discovery: vegetable fibres dissolved in water combine in dewatering on a sieve to form a coherent fibre fleece - paper. After the pulp has been extracted, it is transferred to the paper machine. The main task of the paper machine is to remove water from the applied fibre suspension by filtering, pressing and drying. The main components of a paper machine are the stockpile box, sieve section, press section, dryer section and the roll up section. The paper machines used in paper mills today are technically highly sophisticated production lines.

1. Sockpile boxPaper production begins at the stockpile, where the paper stock is injected into the nip between two high-speed screens. The fibre suspension in the headbox consists of 99 % water and only 1 % fibres and fillers. In the wire section, the fiber suspension is formed into a paper web.

2. Sieve sectionA large part of the water runs off in the sieve section and the fibres are distributed over the sieves. These consist of a fine plastic fabric which causes the water to run off and the formation of a completely even paper fleece. The draining water is collected and returned to the production process. The wire section determines the orientation of the fibres and can also influence the strength, sheet formation and two-sidedness of the paper.

3. Press sectionArrived in the press section, the paper web still contains 80 % water. On a felt web, it is transferred to the wet press, where further water is pressed out of it by roll pressure and sucked up by the felt. This reduces the water content to 50% and improves the fibre bonding of the paper. Specific volume, opacity and smoothness of the paper can be controlled in the press section.

4. Dryer sectionIn the dryer section, which consists of steam-heated hollow cylinders over which the paper runs, further water is removed from the paper web. After this treatment, the water content of the paper is 3 to 8 %, depending on the grade. Drying requires large amounts of steam, which is generated in the mill‘s own power plant. The dryer section can influence the curl of the paper.

5. Roll-up sectionThe last part of the paper machine, the roll-up section, is formed by a rewinder that rewinds the paper web into machine reels (tambours). These reels can have a diameter of 4 m, weigh 100 tons and contain 100 km of paper web. The machine rolls are then transported to the equipment.

FILTRATION GROUP SUPPORTS FROM RAW MATERIAL UP TO PROCESSING

Wood is the basic raw material for paper production. Fibers with a high degree of fines determine the quality rating of mechanical pulp. They ensure that the paper has a closed surface and that the ink does not shine through when printed on both sides. Wood pulp is obtained by mechanically defibering wood. Different processes can be used: the classic process of grinding on a whetstone or the more recent process using a refiner. In the wood grinding process, wood beaters are pressed against a rotating whetstone with the addition of hot water. The rough stone surface frays the wood into fibres, fibre fragments and the finest fibre particles. The balanced ratio between short and long fibres determines the quality of the wood pulp. After the sanding process, the pulp is sorted, ground and thickened. The starting material for the refiner process is wood chips. The wood is boiled in the refiner at high temperature with the addition of water and then defibred between two millstones rotating against each other. Lignin, which causes the paper to yellow, is largely retained in the fibres during this process. With both methods, a very high raw material yield can be achieved, depending on the grinding process.

THE TREATMENT

Pulp is characterized by long, firm fibres. They ensure that the paper is stable and tear-resistant. To produce cellulose, wood - usually in the form of wood chips - is chemically digested in a digester. Heating removes substances such as resins and lignins from the wood fibres. Depending on the intended use, bleaching may also be necessary. In former times bleaching was implemented with elemental chlorine, today with oxygen, hydrogen peroxide or chlorine compounds. While mainly spruce and fir woods are used for the production of wood pulp, both coniferous and deciduous woods are suitable for the production of cellulose. Pulp is also produced from annual plants such as straw, sugar cane and alfagras.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT

The pulp and paper industry is still very water-intensive. In the production of paper, water is used for manufacturing, auxiliary and cleaning purposes, with multiple uses within the production process. Nowadays, carefully purified process water passes through the production process up to ten times. In paper production, approximately ten cubic metres of wastewater are produced per tonne of air-dried paper. Modern pulp mills manage with 40 cubic metres of waste water per tonne of pulp. The FG Backwash Filter AF 8 is specially designed for demanding situations and the toughest conditions.

PVC products provide optimal solutions in the automotive industry

FILTRATION OF HIGHLY VISCOUS MEDIA WITH HIGH PRESSURE FILTER AF 71 H

Due to their variety of properties, plastics are the key to technical innovation in the automotive sector. PVC is the third most important plastic in this application with a share of approx. 10 %. Parts made of PVC are durable or have special protective functions for other materials. For example, PVC plastisols used as underbody protection prevent the corrosion of a motor vehicle. In the automotive industry, the metal egde technology of Filtration Group has been used here for many years.

HIGHEST DEMANDS ON SURFACE QUALITY

Underbody protection is sprayed on, less often painted. Today it usually consists of a mixture of polymer powders based on PVC, a plasticizer, additives and fillers. Underbody protection applied in the factory is hardened again by heating. The underbody protection is applied by the so-called airless process, which permits a relatively high application speed and a large spray width. The aim is to minimize the overspray produced by, for example, adjusting the distance between the underbody and the application system. The application thickness depends on the application speed and the choice of nozzle. Underbody protection is often combined with seam sealing. By using application heads with several nozzles, which are mounted at different angles, even geometrically complex application patterns can be realized.

HIGH-SENSITIVE PROCESSES - NO PROBLEM FOR FILTRATION GROUP

Due to the composition of the PVC media (fillers), filtration is a finely tuned process step. Only then can the vehicles be optimally protected and meet the high optical requirements of the paint shop. Filtration Group has selected an metal edge filter for the filtration and homogenization of highly viscous PVC. Here the PVC pastes range between approx. 5,000 - 30,000 mPas at 40°C.

Newsletter Filtration Group GmbH

Marcus SchneebergerRegional Sales Manager Southern Germany [email protected]

Underbody protection is achieved almost exclusively with PVC-based material, which is applied in an airless process with layer thicknesses of 500 to 800 µm.

CUSTOMER BENEFIT

■ Cleaning can be done during the process, thus less downtime due to element change

■ No consumption of filter material and associated reduction of perating costs

■ Low initial differential pressure due to optimized flow characteristics

■ Compact design ■ Low maintenance requirements

ISO 16890 comprises four parts:

Part 1: Technical specifications, requirements and efficiency classes based on particle efficiency (ePM)Part 2: Measurement of fractional power and airflow resistancePart 3: Determination of the separation efficiency and the flow resistance with the addition of test dustPart 4: A conditioning method for determining the minimum fractional test efficiency.

Filtration Group International - Filtrair Talk

NEW ISO 16890 FILTER TEST STANDARD IS ACTIVE

Since December 2016, the new standard ISO 16890 became active and after a transitional period of 18 months, ISO 16890 finally replaced EN779:2012 at the end of June 2018. The new ISO 16890 standard is more realistic for the actual performance of a filter. Instead of classifying only 0.4 µm particles, the ISO 16890 standard uses the range from 0.3 to 10 microns. The separation efficiency is divided into the classes ISO Coarse, ISO ePM 10, ISO ePM 2.5 and ISO ePM 1. Our in-house test bench has been rebuilt for the new ISO 16890. Now it is possible to test our filters according to the new ISO 16890 standard in the Filtrair laboratory in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Filtrair is ready for the new ISO 16890 standard for filter testing and classification.

NEW ISO 16890 IS CLOSER TO REAL PERFORMANCE

The fine dust concentration of the ambient air, the fine dust particles PM10, PM2.5, has been measured for several years at measuring stations of the Federal States and the Federal Environment Agency as well as at public stations in other EU countries. Current values for the particulate fractions PM10 and PM2.5 are published on the website of the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). The PM1 fraction is respirable dust and is also considered, but not explicitly measured everywhere. If the assessment of air quality is based on the concentrations of particulate fractions mentioned above, it seems logical to evaluate air filters according to the same criteria. The current ISO 16890 standard consists of 4 different parts. The test procedure differs significantly from the old standard EN 779:2012. Both standards can only be compared to a limited extent.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ISO 16890

■ An international guideline ■ The ISO16890 covers the performance of the particle size in the range of 0.3 to 10 microns (the test evaluation according to EN779 was only considered for the particle size of 0.4 microns).

■ The filtration degree is measured before and after an electro-static discharge.

■ Now it is possible to select filters according to performance and intended use.

13

Filtration Group International - Filtrair Talk

ISO CLASSIFICATION 16890

The old filter classification according to EN779 (G1-F9) has expired. According to the new ISO 16890, filters are now only divided into four filter classes:

■ ISO Coarse

■ ISO ePM10

■ ISO ePM2,5

■ ISO ePM1

The filter classes are displayed in connection with the group name as class evaluation. For the reporting of the ePM classes, the class scores are rounded down to the next multiple of 5% points. Values greater than 95% are reported as „>95%“. Examples of class evaluations are ISO Coarse 60%, ISO ePM10 60%, ISO ePM2.5 80%, ISO ePM1 85% or ISO ePM1 >95%. With the exception of filters of the ISO Coarse group, dust loading according to ISO 16890-3 and measurement of initial gravimetric separation are optional. ISO coarse filters can only be classified based on initial gravimetric efficiency, so in this case measurement of ePMx values is optional.

Newsletter Filtration Group GmbH

Table 2: IGS = Initial gravimetric separation

The filters are classified according to their filter performance in relation to the particle fractions PM10, PM2.5 and PM1. A prerequisite for each group is that the filter retains at least 50% of the particles from this group. For example, if a filter removes more than 50% PM1 particles, it is classified as an ISO ePM1 filter. The new ISO standard also evaluates filters for coarse dust in addition to particle filters. These filters are classified as ISO Coarse.
