UP – Manila Chancellor,
Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla and PGH
Director, Dr. Gerardo D. Legazpi led the
inauguration of the new Intermediate Pedi-
atric Intensive Care and Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Units on December 17, 2018 at
the Pediatrics Departmental Complex of PGH. The momentous event was also at-
tended by Dr. Juliet Sio - Aguilar, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. The iPICU
and P-PDU facilities were donated by Sytengco Group of Companies (SBS Philip-
pines Corporation) thru Mr. Necisto Y. Sytengco II and facilitated by PGH Medical
Foundation, Inc.
A 7-bed unit, with two isolation rooms, the iPICU is fully equipped to
provide optimal medical and nursing services to critically ill patients, who, other-
wise, have been managed in the pediatric wards due to the limited bed capacity in the
main Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The P-PDU, on the other hand, will accommo-
date Pediatric Patients with chronic kidney disease in dire need of Peritoneal Dialysis
while awaiting kidney transplant. Patients with end – stage kidney disease can now
get their much needed dialysis and be taught how to do dialysis at home.
The construction of the twin facilities serves as confirmation with painstak-
ing efforts, commitment, and team work of the PGH Medical Foundation, Inc., and
the Department of Pediatrics towards the realization of the PGH noble vision of
service to the Filipino children.

invocation.
Mabuhay! 2018 was indeed a very good year for the PGH MFI. We had very success-ful fund raising events like our Art Auction and our Golf Tournament. We have also expanded the coinbank program. We have received corporate donations that allowed us to finish various projects of the PGH, like the Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit, the
Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Unit, the Human Milk Bank and many other smaller projects. One of our most successful projects was the Hygiene Kits we give to each and every admitted PGH patient. The Foundation wishes to expand the assistance to the PGH patients further but to be able to do this, we need to improve our fund raising activities, corporate and individual solici-tations, and rely on the spirit of volunteerism. The Foundation had a Strategic Planning Work-shop last March 14 & 15, 2019 to map out our future direction. We are tempered by our desire to give more help to more people and our concern for the continuing survival of the Foundation. 2019 Should be a better year. More thanks to our very generous sponsors.

I am truly very humbled to be given the opportunity to serve as the Vice President of the PGH Medical Foundation (PGHMFI). I take on this role with a grateful heart knowing that I will be able to help our poor brothers and sisters who are in dire need. All of this for my love to God and for His greater glory. As we start 2019, we will
continue to pursue to get more members to help us in our charitable cause. We have also started reaching out to the corporate community to look for more donors to help us raise needed funds to service the needs of the charity patients of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). I am very confident that with our planned activities for 2019, including the expansion of the coin bank program and PGHMFI Golf Tournament to name a few, we will be able to help more patients at the PGH. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest gratitude to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee Officers, and Members of PGHMFI who have entrusted this task to me. Peritoneal Dialysis for Children: A Dream Come True for PGH
By Dr. Dolores D. Bonzon
Section Chief of Pediatric Nephrology
Kidney failure can affect chil-
dren of all races and age groups from
infants to adolescents and can have a
significant effect on a child’s growth,
development, and quality of life.
Worldwide, the incidence of end-
stage renal disease in children is in-
creasing. In the US, approximately
1,300 children are likely to develop
permanent kidney failure or End-
Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) every
year. The main causes of kidney fail-
ure in children are birth defects of the
kidney, blockage or reflux of the uri-
nary tract, genetic kidney diseases,
and Focal Segmental Glomeruloscle-
rosis (FSGS). The incidence of end-
stage renal disease in the Philippines
is at 120 per million populations for
both adult and pediatric patients and
the most common causes of End-
Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) among Filipinos are diabetes, hypertension and chronic glomerulonephritis.
When a child develops ESRD, he or she must receive Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT). RRT replaces the
work the kidneys do for the body, removing excess fluid, waste removal, and regulation of electrolytes. There are two main
types of RRT for ESRD, dialysis and a kidney transplant. A kidney transplant is usually the best treatment because it is the clos-
est thing to having normal kidneys, but sometimes it is not possible for a kidney transplant to happen right away. Therefore di-
alysis is often necessary before getting a transplant. There are two types of dialysis treatment available, either Hemodialysis
(HD) or Peritoneal Dialysis (PD).
HD is when blood is taken out of the body through a tube and cleaned by an artificial kidney filter that is attached to a
dialysis machine then returned to the body. Children undergoing hemodialysis have to receive dialysis treatment at a hospital or
dialysis center. Treatments last about 3-4 hours, 3-4 times every week.
PD is performed by surgically placing a special, soft, hollow tube into the child's lower abdomen near the navel. After
the tube is placed, a special solution called dialysate is instilled into the peritoneal cavity. The peritoneal cavity is the space in
the abdomen that houses the organs and is lined by two special membrane layers called the peritoneum. The dialysate is left in
the abdomen for a designated period of time that is determined by the child's nephrologist. The dialysate fluid absorbs the
waste products and toxins through the peritoneum. The fluid is then drained from the abdomen, measured, and discarded. The
tube is repeatedly filled with the dialysate and drained several times a day to complete the cleaning process. A child will be hos-
pitalized for a few days when starting PD to make sure the tube and treatment are working properly. There are two different
types of peritoneal dialysis: Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Continuous Cyclic Peritoneal Dialysis
(CCPD).
CPD is the most common dialysis treatment modality used to treat pediatric patients with ESRD, particularly, HD in
children less than five years of age.
CPD offers several advantages over HD that are beneficial for children. PD has fewer side effects than hemodialysis
because it is a more gentle type of treatment done every day as opposed to hemodialysis, which is a relatively quick treatment
done over short amount of time. Children on PD are less likely to experience headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue, which
can occur during and after hemodialysis treatments. PD also tends to be better for young children and infants, who may not be
able to tolerate hemodialysis due to their small size. All children on dialysis have to follow a special kidney diet, but the diet is
less strict with PD compared to hemodialysis. PD allows fluid, electrolytes, and waste to be removed daily, so those on PD do
not have to restrict their fluid or protein intake as much.

PGH strongly adheres to
Executive Order No. 51 (The
Milk Code) as well as Republic
Act No. 7600 (The Rooming-In
and Breastfeeding Act of 1992).
Breastfeeding is pro-
moted and protected, and the
provision of human milk is made
a priority as the unequalled
source of immune protection and
nutrition for sick premature and
full-term newborns even if they
are separated from their mothers.
The new pasteurizer is a
big step towards improving the
efficiency of the operations of
the Human Milk Bank. It is ex-
pected to help sustain the needs
not only of the infants delivered
at the PGH OBAS-NICU com-
plex which amounts to around
7,000 live births each year, but
also to those delivered outborn,
as well as victims of national
emergencies, such as of
Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) and
the Marawi crisis.
This photo was taken on April 30, 2018 during the turn over ceremony of Human Milk Pasteurizer donated by Rotary Club Daechon, Mr. Lee Kyoung Hwan, Rotary Club of Makati
Jose P. Rizal and Ms. Caroline Siy to the PGH Department of Pediatrics through the effort of PGH Medical Foundation, Inc.
Mother and Child share joy in
breastfeeding
PD treatments can be done at home, which is a ma-
jor advantage over hemodialysis. It can also be done at
nighttime while a child is sleeping. This allows children on
PD to go to school regularly and do more normal activities
during the day. It can also accommodate parents who work
during the day. Children on PD can swim and play most
sports as long as the tube is taped properly and carefully
protected. Although it is not a cure, a kidney transplant is
the best form of renal replacement therapy and the closest
thing to having normal kidneys. However, when a kidney
transplant is not possible right away, PD is a good option
and offers several advantages over hemodialysis, including
better school attendance and normal social interaction for
the child, more flexibility of treatments, and fewer side ef-
fects. A child’s kidney doctor (nephrologist) can provide
more information about the different types of renal replace-
ment therapy and will recommend the best treatment for an
individual child with ESRD.
The Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Unit of the Philip-
pine General Hospital (PGH) was inaugurated last Decem-
ber 2018. It is the first dedicated Peritoneal Dialysis Unit
for pediatric patients in the country. This is a dream come
true that was made possible through the generous donation
of SBS Philippines Corporation which was coursed through
the PGH Medical Foundation, Inc. It is expected to serve
as many as 20 to 30 patients a day.

From Wish List to Reality
All set for home. All Maria needed was
an oxygen tank to aid her in breathing while her
weak lungs recovered. With more than two grueling months spent in the hospital,
the resources of Maria’s family were exhausted, making it very difficult for them
to procure home needs. It was the PGH Medical Foundation that enabled Maria to
pursue the roadmap to home. With the funding from this charitable institution, her
family was able to purchase needs for the care of a patient with respiratory failure
at home- an oxygen tank, suction machine and tubings, and an eggcrate mattress.
Though Maria is debilitated by a chronic illness, the future is not ultimately bleak-
recovery may be slow but, is indeed, a worthwhile pursuit, and this oxygen sup-
port at home equated to a renewed life with her family.
Maria is not a lone patient who was given a ray of hope by generous souls
who share in the cause of the PGH Medical Foundation. For the past fifteen years,
the PGHMFI has given thousands of patients another shot at life in so many ways.
For some patients, the PGHMFI already reached out a helping hand even as they
were just starting the battle against their disease. The Section of Hematology of
the Department of Medicine has so many patients in need of bone marrow and
molecular studies for the diagnosis of their illness. In this age of targeted therapy,
obtaining the definitive diagnosis of the disease is the first step in pursuing treat-
ment. Through the help of the PGHMFI, in partnership with other agencies, these
patients benefit from bone marrow and molecular studies, which are critical in
giving them a chance at cure.
Even for patients who seem very debilitated with their chronic diseases,
wheelchairs provided by funds from the Foundation have enabled them to move
away from the confines of their bed and experience the world again. Indeed, the
PGHMFI is a generous ally of patients in all stages of their disease- from diagno-
sis to treatment, to long-term care and rehabilitation.
On its 15th year anniversary, the PGHMFI, together with its growing pool
of donors and generous supporters of the cause, celebrate their unfading commit-
ment to the underserved, living by the institution’s mantra, “giving hope to those
who have none.” Growing stronger through time, not even the most aggressive
illnesses has stopped this remarkable foundation from enabling struggling patients
to live their humble dreams.

For the past three years
since its creation in 2015, the grow-
ing number of members of the PGH
MFI Century Club led by both
Dr. Gregorio T. Mariano, Jr.
( US - Based) and Dr. Gregorio T.
Alvior, Jr.(Local - based), contin-
ues. However, the pioneers of this
organization diligently exert more
efforts in encouraging other people
to join the club considering the
increasing demand of the number of
charity patients seeking medical
assistance through the purchase of
medicines and special laboratory
tests which are not available in the
hospital but can be readily access
outside the PGH.
The unwavering support
from the members and their friends
ensure that the purpose of the or-
ganization is carried – out relent-
lessly for the benefit of indigent
patients of PGH.
We enjoin the UP Manila and
PGH Communities to be part of
PGH MFI Century Club
