PUMPKIN:

by Adreana Garcia

Fall is quickly approaching and

with it comes cooler temperatures,

the leaves changing colors to

beautiful shades of reds, oranges

and yellows, and my personal favorite

is the smell of pumpkin.

Pumpkin is so prevalent during the fall season; we

enjoy pumpkin flavored coffees, pumpkin pies,

pumpkin breads, donuts and other desserts and a

personal favorite of mine is pumpkin carving for

Halloween. Why should humans have all the fun? It’s

very exciting to also share this wonderfully tasty and

healthy fruit of the season with our beloved pets!

Pumpkin is an amazing digestive aid; it offers

enormous amounts of nutritious benefits such as

Vitamins C, E, K, and pumpkins are not only rich in

Fiber, Alpha and Beta Carotenes, but they’re also

high in iron. Pumpkin Latte, made by Super Snouts,

is handcrafted with pumpkin and whole goat’s milk

from grass fed, pasture raised goats.

This fun, nutritious treat can be shared with both

dogs and cats. Whipping up a delicious Pumpkin

Latte for your best friend is quick and easy. All you

need to do is mix a tablespoon of the powder with 3

oz of warm water and serve as a nutritious drinkable

treat or serve over their food.

With so many great ingredients such as whole

dried goat milk, apple fiber, organic agave inulin and

Ceylon cinnamon, you can feel great about

incorporating this into what they consume daily.

Our furry babies deserve the very best that life has

to offer. They not only warm our hearts and keep us

laughing, but they also keep us finding joy in the

littlest things; without them, our lives would be dull

and lackluster. Enjoy a safe, healthy, tasty and fun

fall season with your furry sidekicks!

Feeding healthy food and treats maintains their

health from the inside out. Adreana's Latte is

another tasty ‘pumpkin’ recipe for dogs:

Adreana's homemade latte recipe

Add ice, chicken broth and pumpkin into a

shaker and shake slightly. Separate egg white

from yolk and dump into a bowl. Open shaker

and add yogurt and egg white. Shake vigorously

until frothy. Pour into bowl or cup and top with

spoonful of yogurt and a pinch of cinnamon*. If your dog does not have any dietary issue

with dairy, feel free to top this off with a small

swirl of whipped cream. Avoid sugar-free

whipped cream – caution: it may contain Xylitol, which is very dangerous for dogs.

My two Pitbulls devour this nutritious treat.

Pouring it over their food adds another layer of

flavor, keeping them excited about their meals.

I’ve also given it to them in between meals, as

a treat, and they lap it up with delight.

Remember that our pets can get bored with

the same tastes day in and day out so, by

incorporating new tastes keeps it fun and

exciting for them too and you’ll have a happy

and healthy dog or cat. They bring so much joy

into our lives, being able to offer something in

return that contributes to their overall vitality,

health and wellness is the least we can do.

* Replace spice with essential oils such

as Cinnamon or OnGuard protective blend for

a boost of flavor with health benefits –

Substitute dry spice with essential oils in our

Latte recipe (for dogs only). Just a drop* of

Cinnamon or OnGuard, the protective blend, added to the pumpkin mixture for a boost

of flavor with health benefits including:

Tip for adding Essential Oils (for Dogs)

helps improve circulation,

regulate blood sugar,

immune support

protective blend supports healthy

immune function, and protects

from environmental threats; may help

with intestinal worms and parasites

when diffused or added to water*

*Be careful not to use more than a drop. You can

dip a clean toothpick in the essential oil bottle,

then swirl the toothpick, and taste. Add a bit more

by repeating with a clean toothpick.

Safety w cats: Do not add to drinking water if cats

are able to access the essential oils.

DIY No-Sew Pet Bed

What you will need . . .

Anti-pill fleece fabric

Rotary cutter and cutting mat (or a

sharp pair of scissors)

Polyester fiber fill material

Start by determining how much

fleece you’ll need

Here are some general recommendations based on pet size . . .

Place the two sheets of fleece material on top of on

another, lining the edges up evenly. Beginning at

the bottom left hand corner, start cutting 3 inch

strips about 1 1/2 inches apart through both sheets

of material until you reach the bottom right hand

corner.

Cut and remove three strips from each of the

bottom corners. Rotate the fleece material and

continue cutting 3” strips along the rest of the side,

cutting out the corners as you go.

Now it is time to assemble the no-sew pet bed

and we are going to do that by knotting the pre-cut

strips together. Again, start at the bottom right

hand corner and grab the top and bottom piece of

a cut strip and very gently, tie a double knot. This

part takes some care, as fleece is very elastic and

can be stretched out of shape easily. If the knots

are tied too loosely, it will leave gaping holes and if

the knots are tied too tightly, they will bunch.

Continue knotting the strips on all four sides,

taking care not to leave any gaps, until you are left

with a 6 inch opening. Grab some polyester fill and

stuff the insides until it is the desired thickness you

choose. You may have to reach in and re-arrange

the stuffing with your hand to even it out and

remove any bulky areas. When you are happy with

the arrangement of the polyester stuffing, close up

the bed by finishing knotting the rest of the strips.

The only thing left to do is introduce your furry friend to his brand-new, made with heaps of love, no-sew pet bed.

National Pitbull Awareness Day 2017

National Pitbull Awareness Day is a day of

appreciation and education designed to change

perceptions and stereotypes about Pitbulls and

their responsible owners.

NPBAD was established to educate and foster

positive communications and experiences in the

communities in which we and our dogs live, and it

is an initiative dedicated to restoring the image of

the American Pitbull Terrier. The ultimate goal is to

promote the truth about Pitbulls.

Knowledge is power, and with education and

advocacy, the truth will save lives in terms of

negating the fear and bias generated by the media,

circumvent knee-jerk reactions such as breed

bans, and the truth will result in fewer Pitbulls

ending up in animal shelters.

How you can help . . .

Adopt a Pitbull. Pit Bulls are devoted, affectionate

and joy-inducing pets with as great a range in

personality as any other breed. As with dogs of any

breed, not every Pit is perfect for every family.

Read more about things to think about if you’re

thinking of adopting a Pitbull.

Volunteer with Pitbulls. At many city shelters,

Pits and Pit mixes make up the overwhelming

majority of the canine residents, and because Pits

have been bred to bond closely with humans, the

isolation of shelter life is particularly hard for them.

Please check in with our local Santa Fe Humane

Society and other organizations like Woofaste; To

learn more about how to contact them by visiting

the Cheeky Friends section of our website at

cheekybubbles.com/cheeky-friends.html.

Educate others about Pitbulls. Once you’ve

fallen in love with a Pit (and to know one is to

love one), you’ll start to notice how many offhand

Pitbull stereotypes people throw around in

everyday conversation.

"As an intern, she worked with our director of

marketing, Joan Lucci, to assist with

communications including: event planning and

production, publication of newsletter, website

review and content, outreach to our clients, and

photo-journaling.

We are grateful for her many contributions and,

most of all, for the opportunity to get to know

Adreana -- personally and professionally. On

behalf of Joan, and the Cheeky Bubbles team,

we wish Adreana great success as she

completes her degree at the Santa Fe

Community College."

A special thank you to . . .

You can visit the shelter to help exercise and socialize

the dogs; open your home to a foster dog; photograph

and write bios for local adoptable dogs’ Petfinder

profiles; start a bedding drive at your office to collect

old blankets and towels to donate … the possibilities are endless.

Learn the facts about Pits and you’ll be able to

shoot down the myths (no, they do not have

locking jaws).Some great resources include
