Intensiying its research capabilitiesand linkages, the university hostedthe South East Asian Association orInstitutional Research 10th AnnualConerence at the Summit Ridge Hoteland Promenade in agaytay City.Temed “owards Global-ASEANInstitutional Research Strategic Alliances,” the conerence gatheredmore than 100 participants romPhilippines, Tailand, Malaysia andIndonesia.

Te theme, according to SEAAIR President eay Shawyun, “is timely and highly tting given the continuouschanges, competition and challengeshigher education institutions areaced with today.” Tese changes were also refected upon by DLSU-DVice Chancellor or Academics

and Research and 10th SEAAIR Conerence Chair Olivia Legaspi in hermessage, “changes in education are ona ull and high gear. It is imminent onour parts that we remain on track o the latest developments in technology, competitiveness and resea rch.” A pre-conerence seminar on “AppliedQuality in Education” was also heldat the university’s Severino de las Alas Hall Auditorium with Shawyunand Pro. De La Salle University-Dasmariñas:

Situated at the heart o Cavite, with

27 hectares, besieged with lush green

trees, De La Salle University-Dasmarinas

(DLSU-D) has always been a true steward

o nature. For over thirty years o existence

as a Lasallian Institution, the university is

continually exerting eforts in initiating

projects or protecting the biodiversity

through its Environmental Resource

Management Center. Among the various

projects initiated were the Green or Lie:

One Million Trees and Beyond (OMTB)Project, a project under the Lasallian

Institute or the Environment or LIFE that

addresses environmental problems through

tree planting in various areas in Cavite such

as Mt. Palaypalay, Ternate and other near

provinces such as Calatagan and Batangas.

Through the unied eforts o the academic

community, a total o 20,698 seedlings have

been planted or this year alone.

Creating possibilitiesor the

environment

DLSU-D has taken numerous initiatives to help in conserving and

preserving Mother Nature. Various agencies and institutions have

recognized the university’s environmental eforts, thus, receiving

awards such as the Dark Green #1 Status in the Philippines by the

Environmental Education Network o the Philippines.

Solid waste management has been one o the major concerns o DLSU-D, it paved the

way to the construction o a new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) recently awarded

as the Model MRF in the Province o Cavite, this acility reduced solid waste throughthe process o resource, recovery, recycling and composting. Recyclable materials even

generated unds to support more projects on waste management.

On campus waste management

Currently, the university is strengthening ties with other organizations and

institutions sharing common goals o protecting the biodiversity. For the OMTB

project, a memorandum o agreement has been inked with the ollowing:

Tenured Migrants o Mts. Palaypalay Protected landscape and Seascape,

Philippine Marines, Samaka(Calatagan Batangas), The Orchard Gol and CountryClub, Dasmarinas City Local Government and Jabez School.

Tying bonds

To urther strengthen its campaign or environmental program, the university took a

step to even ignite students’ involvement during the summer o 2010 where student

leaders rom the university actively participated with other students rom diferent

La Salle schools in the ormulation o action plans during the 4-day eco-camp.

With the goal o achieving another level o being “green” – that is to create a “green”

educational network that is carbon neutral, the Lasallian Institute or the Environment or LIFE

spearheaded the Project Carbon Neutral (PCN). This project seeks to assess the De La Salle

Philippines (DLSP) schools’ carbon ootprint. Undoubtedly, DLSU-D is more than willing to

take part in this worthy endeavor, ormulating its action plan on how the university can help

LIFE create a better lie or the uture generations.

First of, DLSU-D organized its own PCN Team in June

2010 with the Environmental Resource Management

Center (ERMaC) as the lead unit or the DLSU-D Carbon

Neutral Champion. The center is also tasked to ensurethat PCN plans and projects are implemented according

to schedule and to represent the university in the

DLSP PCN steering committee. The DLSU-D PCN Team

members include all the sectors and select oces o the

DLSU-D community: the students led by the University

Student Council; the aculty with the Faculty Association;

the support staf as headed by the KABALIKAT; the

Parents Organization o La Salle Cavite; the De La Salle

University Alumni Association-Dasmariñas Chapter, Inc.;

the Lasallian Community Development Center; and the

Housekeeping Departments.

With everyone on board, through

the assistance o LIFE as represented

by DLSU-D Biological Sciences

Department aculty and LIFE

 Technical Programs Director Marlon

Pareja, several orientation seminars

were conducted or the DLSU-D

PCN Team. These orientation

seminars covered the scope o work

that needs to be accomplished

including the time rame or the

continuity and completion o the

project.

Based on the DLSP PCN Team’s

project implementation plan, there

are our phases geared towards

the completion o the project:

Phase 1-Carbon oot printing and

sequestration activities;

Phase 2-Energy Auditing;

Phase 3-Curriculum Integration; and

Phase 4-Extension and Trainings.

As part o the plan, ERMaC

conducted an inventory o treesin the campus on August 2010 –

covering the tree species, number,

diameter in breast height (DBH)

and height – thereby gathering

inormation or the computation

o the carbon amount sequestered

by the university. By September

2010, the DLSU-D PCN Team

began its data gathering or oot

printing on energy and lighting.

For starters, they gathered

inormation on number, type

and wattage o lighting systems

and appliances in the university

buildings. The team also gathered

the Electric Consumption Reporto all departments and buildings

rom January 2008 up to present

through the Accounting Oce, as

well as the uel and oil usage o the

transportation rom 2008 until May

2010. These steps were taken or the

ormulation o recommendations

and measures to be taken to ofset

the university’s carbon emissions.

DLSU-D continues its tireless

eforts to help not only or the

ulllment o this project, but,

ultimately, or the conservation and

preservation o the environment.

With the university’s battle cry o

“creating possibilities,” this is a clearmaniestation that possibilities

created are not solely or academic

excellence or the goal o producing

globally competitive graduates.

We also create possibilities or

the environment – or the uture

generations to still enjoy resh air,

eel the grass on their eet and the

cool breeze when climbing a tree.

Br. Nicodem visits DLSU-D

Ater the warm welcome at the airport

by Br. Rey Mejias FSC and University Linkages Oce Director Wilson Jacinto, Br. Nicodem went straightto the campus to meet the university president and vice chancellors. Br.Nicodem then met adult lay Christiansrom DLSU-D who has been calledby God in a special way--the SignumFidei members. Select aculty, sta, andstudents were given the opportunity to have a small group sharing with theBrother as well.

Br. Nicodem was toured in the campusater the dialogues with the variousgroups despite the little rest romhis long fight. He was treated withglimpses o university landmarks

like Museo De La Salle, Antonio &

Victoria Cojuangco Memorial Chapelo Our Lady o the Holy Rosary, Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo, and Bahay Pag-asa.

In one o his dialogues, Br. Nicodemchallenged the community to touchothers’ lives in concrete and practical ways—through their job, their words,or whatever it is entrusted withthem. According to him, these willbe undamental contributions to the

Lasallian mission. And through theGeneral Councilor’s short visit in theuniversity, he did exactly that—hetouched the lives o the DLSU-Dcommunity.

“o be ready to work in their ministry anywhere they are asked to go.” Tis is one characteristic o a Lasallian Brother.Tus remaining unazed despite the recent bad news about the country, Br. Edgar Genuino Nicodem FSC, General Councilor orRELAL (Région Latinoamericana Lasallista) visited DLSU-D or a dialogue with the community last Nov. 23.
