MUSEUM

OF ARCHITECTURE

PORTO HAS A SERIES OF TRAJECTORIES THAT RESPOND ACCORDING TO THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE TERRAIN. LEADING PEOPLE THROUGH A

SERIES OF INTRICATE STREETS THAT CREATES THE URBAN FABRIC. WITH THIS TYPE OF ORGANIC PLANNING, THE MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE WILL HAVE ITS OWN SERIES OF BUILDINGS

WITHIN A CONFINED AREA DEFINED BY THE URBAN CONTEXT. THE FORMS WILL COMPLETE TRAJECTORIES OF THE PEDESTRIAN PATHS AND CONTINUE THE NATURAL INTRICACIES IN THE

INTERIORS. THUS PRODUCING PARTICULAR VIEWPOINTS THAT GUIDE THE USER TOWARDS

THE RIVER, GARDEN, OR SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD.

Local material in Porto are mainly granite, marble, and concrete. A majority of the older part of the city is constructed of large thick slabs and boulder pieces of granite. It has remained a traditional material

for the region and is still highly used today in newer construction. Because the material is readily available and labor is inexpensive, granite is a key material that will integrate the museum more into its context. Allowing for a consistent dialog with neighboring structures. Concrete also plays a pivotal role in the vernacular. A majority of all new construction is made of reinforced concrete. Due to the regional weather and site restrictions, concrete is the most practical material.

Traditionally granite, marble, concrete, and wood have been utilized for interior finishes. The museum uses these same materials to

emphasize familiarity within the space. All of the main public access ways will have a honed carrera marble flooring. This material can with stand the heavier traffic and also has a longer life span. The wood

flooring will be used in all of the exhibits, restaurant, bookstore, library, classrooms, auditorium, and private spaces. The walls will have either exposed white concrete or a clean white drywall for artwork. These

materials combined give a clean atmospheric presence that is reminiscent of a typical museum space.

LA JOLLA HAS A VERY DIVERSE COMMUNITY. THE AREA IS INHABITED BY SCHOLARS,

SCIENTISTS, DESIGNERS, BUSINESS MEN AND WOMAN, THRILL SEEKERS, AND SO MUCH MORE.

SUCH A UNIQUE CITY DESERVES A PLACE WHERE THE COMMUNITY CAN COME

TOGETHER AND ENJOY THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS. THE LA JOLLA GLIDERPORT HAS THE BEST VIEW OF THE

ENTIRE CITY. PERCHED ATOP THE CLIFFS WITH 360 DEGREE VIEWS, THE GLIDERPORT PROVIDES

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO EMBRACE THE LOCALS AND GIVE THEM A PLACE TO RELAX. I AM PROPOSING A NEW STRUCTURE THAT CAN HAVE MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS AND CAN BE UTILIZED ANY TIME OF THE YEAR. A PLACE OF SOLACE AS WELL AS FUN FOR THE LOCAL

FLYER’S. BRINGING BACK NATIVE PLANT SPECIES AND INTRODUCING NEW NIGHTLIFE

ENTERTAINMENT WILL APPEAL TO ALL OF THE DIFFERENT USERS IN THE AREA. A PLACE THAT

WILL HAVE A LONG-LASTING POSITIVE IMPACT ON ITS COMMUNITY.

THE DESIGN OF THE GLIDERPORT IS MODERN WITH HINTS OF MID-CENTURY DESIGN AS WELL

AS CONCRETE ELEMENTS THAT REFLECT THE DESIGN THE SULK INSTITUTE. A RESTAURANT THAT

CAN OPERATE AT ANYTIME DURING THE YEAR WILL KEEP THE AREA ACTIVE AND A MAIN

DESTINATION FOR VISITORS.

Negotiated MovementDynamism / Progression / Proportion / Fluidity

A multifaceted outdoor experience that will engage pedestrians, both visitors and locals into an inviting entry space of the Roman Forum. A semi forced perspective in the architecture will allow the space to have the same type of monumentality as its surroundings. Demanding a presence that will then dene its own typology as a civic space. Maneuvering elements such as the landscape will aid in the manipulation of the spaces to have particular uses. These spaces will have a uidity into one another to allow for an overall cohesion. The landscape will grow and form into moments of various levels that can be occupied and allow for views of the surrounding Monuments. With distortions in larger geometric forms, the architecture will have an appearance of grandeur. The dynamism between the architecture and the landscape will be metamorphic in changes that will expand the horizon line of the viewer and user.Simple aesthetics that help in the progression from street to entrance will guide the pedestrian through the various spaces seamlessly. The path of travel should feel eortless to its users. In an entrance to a very important archaeological site, there should be no guess work.
