It wasn’t going to be some kind of leisurely hobby. He’s lived up to his word. In 2014 Duke went on to become only the second play- er to earn PBA50 Player of the Year and PBA50 Rookie of the Year in the same season, win- ning two titles including the Senior U.S. Open. young Guns dominate Pba Jackson rancheria casino resort championship

SUTTER CREEK — PBA Touring Pro Josh Blanchard, 27 from Mesa Arizona, barely defeated 17 year-old junior amateur Wesley Low, Jr. in the West Region PBA Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort Championship held February 21-22 at Gold Country Lanes in Sutter Creek California. The final match score was 235 to 225. This was Blanchard’s seventh career title, and a $2500 payday. Blanchard thanked his sponsors, ―Turbo for making the Switch Grip and Ebonite International; the Code of Honor ball was the best this weekend hands down! Later Blanchard Tweeted, ―Great bowling kid. Thanks for letting the old guy win one before you win them all.

Low, a high school senior from Palmdale California was eager to capture his second PBA Re-gional Title. In 2013, at the age of 15, Low became the youngest bowler to win a PBA Regional Championship — breaking a 34-year-old record set by PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber in 1979 — when the two handed left-handed competitor won the PBA Non Champion West tournament at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas. Low, gracious in his loss to Blanchard posted, ―Great bowling to Josh. On a bright note, I threw my first 300 in a PBA Saturday during the qualifying round. Low’s perfect game, the only one of the two-day tournament was accomplished on the Viper pattern. Not yet a PBA member and maintaining his amateur status, Low’s earnings will be depos-ited in his SMART scholarship account.

A total of 78 bowlers entered the tournament. Local Gold Country Lanes Pro Robert Harmon, won $400 as he finished in 24th place, just ahead of PBA Touring Pro Michael Haugen, Jr., from Phoenix Arizona. Haugen holds four national PBA Tour titles. ―This event is a great event for Sut-ter Creek and Amador County, said Proprietor John Swift. ―The Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort has built an event that fills hotels and restaurants over the weekend, and we are really pleased to partner with them and the PBA. It’s made even better when you see a touring-pro like Blanchard taking on up-and-comer Low in the final match. You’ll see them both move on in their careers — and all the competitors will certainly remember Amador County and the good times and competi-tion that played out here.

THE ARMSWING 41

The armswingRoll!

That’s a good shot!

natural instincts to apply additional power to your shot. The ball is still behind you and the consciousapplication of additional power, at this point, will pull your shoulders out of alignment. This will cause your shot to go off -line.

Developing your approach is like learning a new dance step. Call it, “Bowling Ball Ballet” if you like. The motions should be just that fluid and precise. Unfortunately for fans of that fine art, the description of those movements are more akin to a country music ballad. The lyrics go something like this:

BOWLING BALL BALLET BALLAD Grab my partner, assume my stance; Face my target, it’s time to dance. Toward second arrow I take a step, But nothing else can happen yet. Posture set, my aim is true, I keep going and take step two. As I move, I check my grip Then push that ball away from my hip. Right foot moves, it’s now step three, That ol’ right arm is swinging free. “Drop-stop-roll!,” is what I think, As step four takes me to the brink. Step five ends this short dance story, I release the ball, it goes for glory. Watch it roll, what will it do? Yahoo! It hit arrow number two!!!

Now be honest. Do you still want to take up this sport? You do? Well then, enjoy a long and glorious career. You still have much to learn and challenges to face. If I’ve done my job, you’re ready for them.

CommentaryThe transformation from novice to casual, then competitive bowler is like the story of, “The

Ugly Duckling.” The awkward novice develops graceful ability. A once-shy youngster becomes a confident and competent competitor. A wall-flower becomes a champion. You get the idea. It takes a bit of effort, but it’s worth it.

chapter I am assuming you have chosen the better tech-nique, the controlled backswing.

The Perfect Game by Steve Felege

HELLO TO BOWLING: Part VIf you’ve read the prior lessons, you know more about bowling skills than most beginners. But when you pick up a ball and try to

use those skills, everything will fall apart. You’ll feel awkward and clumsy. What you’ll be feeling is a lack of coordination between the swinging ball and your footwork. Don’t be discouraged; all bowlers go through this.

Lesson #4: Making it all work together.Coordinating the push-away, arm-swing and release with footwork is referred to as “timing.” The posture created by the prescribed

stance and the moment you begin the push-away are the critical elements. With perfect timing you and the ball will arrive at the foul line in unison. With a five step delivery, you begin the push-away (A) at the same time you begin the second step of your ap-proach, (B) during the second step of your approach, or (C) at the end of the second step. You must experiment a bit, but the awkward feeling will quickly disappear once you find the right time to initiate your push-away skill.

Is there some tip that will simplify the process? Of course there is! Use the most powerful muscle in your body: the brain. Like everything you do, your brain is in charge of it. That includes your ability to deliver effective, well-timed bowling shots. So now we have to train the brain.

Trying to explain the mental process will do little more than put you to sleep, so I’m going to rely on the ancient Chinese proverb, “One picture is worth a thousand words.” Pay close attention to the commands the bowler uses in the following illustration. Mimic that mental process; it knits everything together.

shots and raced away to a 201-168 win as Pittsburgh was unable to roll back-to-back strikes. The Jack Rabbits figured out the lane conditions in game two, however, with Bryon Smith, Dan MacLelland, Ryan Ciminelli, Osku Palermaa and anchor bowler Wes Malott finishing the game with nine consecutive strikes to run away with a 270-208 victory to force the roll-off.

In the roll-off, Malott gave Dallas anchor Shawn Maldonado a chance to win when he left a 10 pin, but Maldonado’s shot was light in the pocket, leaving the 2-5 and handing Pittsburgh a 9-8 victory.

“I got my shot inside a little and fortunately had enough roll on the ball to get nine pins,” Malott said. “It looked to me like Shawn did the same thing and only got eight pins. We were com-ing off a big game, but you still have to make quality shots in the end.”

Malott and his teammates also embraced the non-stop roar of the crowd.

“Who wouldn’t like it?” he said. “It’s a little different kind of atmosphere, but we could get used to it. When the money’s on the line, it’s still about making shots, but it’s also about hav-ing fun with your team. I hope we come back next year and do it again.”

L.A. X had game one in hand in the second match against the Barbasol Motown Muscle, despite both teams having difficul-ties finding the pocket. Trailing by 11 pins after eight frames, Motown anchor Ronnie Russell was unable to convert Mike De-Vaney’s ninth-frame strike into a double to take the lead when he left a 10 pin on his first shot in the 10th frame. Russell converted the spare, forcing L.A. X anchor Jason Belmonte to get a mark for the win, Belmonte left the 2-4-8 and missed the spare to hand Motown a 182-179 win.

Both teams battled for the lead in game two before L.A. X broke it open with back-to-back strikes by Andres Gomez and Martin Larsen. Belmonte’s three strikes in the 10th clinched the 228-192 decision to force the roll-off where Belmonte threw a strike and Russell left a 10 pin.

“In the 10th frame of the first game, my left hand slipped off the ball in my backswing,” Belmonte, a two-handed player, said. “I should have stopped, but I figured we had a second game and if it got down to one shot, I’d redeem myself. When you perform as badly as I did the first time, you’d better make sure when you get a chance to make up for it, you throw the best shot of your life.”

Next Sunday’s Elias Cup semifinal round matches will also be decided in best-of-two-game Baker format team matches. The two winners will advance to the Elias Cup finals on ESPN on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m., where the title will be decided in a single, alternate-ball doubles, Baker trios and Baker team competition. The singles, doubles and trios matches each will be worth one point, and the Baker team match will be worth three points.

would make sure the picture of Tom was clearly seen by the officer and most of the time, it did keep her from getting a ticket.

In her 40’s she bowled at Alhambra Valley Bowl (with me) and three other red head-ed gals in a Men’s 925 scratch league as well as in the San Gabriel Valley Women’s Trav-eling League. She worked as a bartender at the L.A. Athletic Club where she met Keith, who became the love of her life.

I remember a lot about Bert including the 25 years she was head of the Donkee Tourna-ment Club and the years when she loved and collected clown figurines. But there are a few things that Bert doesn’t allow me to talk about. Although she doesn’t have red hair anymore she is still absolutely beautiful inside and out and loves talk-ing and joking with her numer-ous friends of all ages. Give a warm hug and a big hello smile when you see her.

Jackie Picked Up The Phoneby Jackie Henney

NORWALK — Carol Mancini wrote in the last issue of the California Bowling News to pick up the phone! I did!

I’m sorry about all the lovely people in bowling that are gone. After being around bowling for almost 60 years I too feel bad about our losses.

I’m still here at 90 years old and still take care of our Action Lanes Seniors. I was mainly at Santa Anita Lanes for 30 years until they closed.

I still love bowling and love putting this league together. It is a No-Tap Mixed 4 league. All are welcome and we start again on June 11th Thursday at 1 p.m.

We bowl for 23-24 weeks then go to the Orleans in Vegas. This is a friendly group of men and women 50 and above in age.

On April 9th at noon we are having a Rummage and Jewelry Sale. You are invited and all proceeds go to the league members plus they receive their prize money and trip at the end of the league. Please call me at 626-294-9074 if you are interest in joining or just to say Hello.

Editor’s Note: Santa Anita Lanes was one of the busiest centers in So.Calif. ‘til their lease was up. Jackie had a reputation....”No bowler could say “NO” to her”!!. You were the best Jackie, Thanks for picking up the phone. Keep those seniors bowling.

have been around a long time can’t compete with the players of today using the power game, so we have become what I like to call ‘craft players,’” Duke said. “Through all the years you develop your ability so much that it becomes a craft where you take your experiences and techniques and draw on them to stay competitive, rather than just being able to rely on one particular dimension of your game. It’s something that has just naturally prepared me well for the PBA50 Tour.”

Once again Duke will be among a field of PBA legends com-peting in New Port Richey who compete full time on both the PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour. They include fellow Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr., Pete Weber, Parker Bohn III and Pasco County Open defending champion Amleto Monacelli.

“I’ll say one thing, on both Tours there’s no “just getting by days,” Duke said. “You need to be strong day in and day out if you want to be successful.

“When I was young I never saw myself competing on the PBA50 Tour but now I’m embracing it,” he added. “I’ve accept-ed that this is another stage in my career and I need to build on that.”

The Pasco County Florida Open begins on Sunday, April 12 with qualifying rounds at 10 a.m. Qualifying continues on April 13. Match play rounds will take place on April 14 with the step-ladder finals getting underway at approximately 7 p.m. Practice and pro-ams will be conducted on Saturday, April 11.

The Pasco County Open will be covered start-to-finish on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame. Fans can follow PBA action through the entire PBA Network which includes wall-to-wall coverage of an expanded schedule of live events on Xtra Frame, player interactions through Facebook and Twitter, mobile gaming, original programming, archived events and immediate news updates 24/7 on varying communications devices any-where in the world. BURBANK — Surely, by now, all are aware of the sad news of another bowling center being shut down. This is unfortunately a trend that is rearing it’s ugly head. For those who do not know, Mission Hills Bowl will be closing it’s doors for the last time on May 31st.

Mission is a center, along with Pickwick, in which I have spent many pleasurable hours of bowling with friends and family. It’s closing is not a matter of lack of leagues. The house was full almost nightly. However, low league pres-ence is the common cause of bowling center closures. Very often, the addition of parties, etc is just not enough to keepthesehighmaintenancebusinessesafloat.

As Pickwick bowlers, this should give us pause to think. If we want our center and leagues to thrive, we need to pro-mote our leagues from the inside out. Yes, Pickwick will do all it can to advertise and bring new people into the center but the best advertising of all is word of mouth.

It is up to us as league bowlers to let others, who may be interested, know how much fun we have. How much we value our friendships made through our leagues and how they can become a part of it all. Committing to a league is tough, no doubt. But there are some awesome rewards to doing so. Give those ‘other’ friends in your life a chance to become ‘bowling’ friends as well!

DOWNEY — It was a HUGE change from last round as we had 6 Perfect games and 2 800 Series shot tonight as the lanes played a little more favorable for the bowlers. Leading the way was Eric Snow with 300/824, but despite his hero-ics, his team was taken down 4-1 by The Pro Approach as there were plenty of honor scores shot. The Professional Ap-proach was led by Jared Lawrence who also shot 300 on his way to 791, part time teammate Frank Barefoot contributed 706. Blizz Yogurt blended their way to a fruity sweep job of Linder Insurance as Greg Neuer paved the way with 699. Lots of high scores tonight so IF you don’t shoot 700, don’t ask me to be impressed!!!

The Pro Approach and Blizz Yogurt square off next week, both at 13-2. Next up is Pino’s Pizza who swept past Tifco Industries to move to 11-4. Pino’s was led by Leonard Ruiz Jr. who posted 300/772 and Ramon Torres wit h723, while Tifco’s top gun was Albert Chen with 719. Power House Video Games remained in contention, going 3-2 over Team DV8. Eddie VanDaniker and Lee Liu once again led the winning Power House team, shooting 731 & 704, how-ever it was Brent Ilagan gaining top honors for the pair with 300/775 to lead DV8.

Another perfecto was turned in by Buddy Lucas, he shot 300/736 to lead his Los Altos Trophies team to a 4-1 win over a struggling J.A.T., who were led by DeeRonn Booker with 641. Paced by the great bowling of Jonathan Gale, Her-zog Insurance edged by CASAMIGO’S Tequila 3-2 to end the night at 9-6. Jonathan shot 758 to dominate the pair, as he ended over 100 pins higher than Vernon Adams who was tops for Tequila for 654.

Alhambra Coin Center didn’t have any honor scores, but did manage to shoot the Team High Series for the night, combining for a huge 2862, or an average of 238 a game per

man. T. J. Abahazy 781 and Steven Gaucin 733 led the way, while Matt Schermerhorn shot 759 to lead Cook’s Bowl-ing Supply. BOWLIUM took down GJC Services 4-1 as Christopher Sutton led the way with 668. Joey Hanna shot 698 as the top scorer for GJC to lead his team and the pair. American Harvest Vodka pulled out 4 wins as Mike Mellick led the way with 695 and helped move his team out of the basement. In a matchup of the Top 2 seeds, nobody man-aged to shoot 700, but Bobby Campagnale went one better as he finished with a perfect 300 game to end the night with a second honor score of 800 series to lead Erickson Foods to a 4-1 over Keystone Lanes. Arnold Cheesman topped the Keystone crew with 681. Our last match featured the #3 & #4 seeds going head to head, with SYSCO coming out on top 4-1 in a close match, as Charlie Kinstler led the way with 707. Topping Forest Lanes was Mike Nakunz with 668.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Leonard Ruiz 300, Game 2 –Eric Snow 300, good for both 2nd Game and 1st in Financial Advisor’s pot. Matt Schermerhorn got 2nd for $100 with 279. Game 3 Super Pot went to Bobby Campag-nale with another 300, as all sidepots took perfection. The TRUE ANCHOR award once again goes to Ricardo Baca with a respectable 540, as he was low “man”. Tiana Tipton struggled to 527, to be low for the ladies…

I told you right here last week, if you are a fan of Honor Scores, you needed to come down to Del Rio. Last night provided plenty of strikes as we had a record tying 6 Perfect Games shot along with two 800 series. There was plenty of action all around, as the whole league averaged 218.7 as only 7 bowlers failed to reach 600. Next week we will try to break the record and have 7 different bowlers hit the coveted 300, come down to Del Rio in Downey next Monday and see if we get it done. Have a blessed week everyone!
