LAUDERDALE SMALL BOAT CLUB NEWS & VIEWS
October 2018
I’ve Learned If someone says something unkind about me, I must live so that no one
will believe it.
You can make someone’s day by simply sending them a little note.
Motel mattresses are better on the side away from the phone.
Regardless of your relationship with your parents you’ll miss them when
they’re gone from your life.
Making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life”.
Life sometimes gives you a second chance.
You shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You
need to be able to throw something back.
Whenever I decide something with kindness, I usually make the right
decision.
Even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one.
Every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love human
touches – holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
I still have a lot to learn.

SECRETARY REPORTS Danielle Landi
Minutes of the Board Meeting October 1, 2018
Roll Call: Secretary has an excused absence, all other
Board members present
A motion was made and passed to approve the minutes
as published in the September, 2018 newsletter for the
Board Meeting of September 10, 2018.
REPORTS:
Treasurer: With our Board Meeting being the 1st of the
month, there is not enough time to generate a financial
report, there will be a report at the October General
Meeting.
Docks & Grounds: There has been 2 Acmes, the 1st Acme
we formed up the pattern for the concrete on D Dock.
The 2nd we formed up the rebar for D Dock and are
almost ready to pour the concrete. We are remodeling
the stage and as of today we are about 90% completed.
We have been able to make use of most of the material’s
needed from items already on the property. We have
spent approximately $642 on sealer, paint and wood.
Vice Commodore: Thanks to Chuck, Docks & Grounds
and Del. Pool tables have been completed. As for the
registration compliance of the boats, I found 6 boats on
trailers that are not in compliance and I will be giving
them a courtesy call. If I get no response from my
telephone calls, we will be sending out letters to those
owners. A question was asked to the Board that if a boat
is up to date but registered in Michigan, is it still in
compliance. Treasures answered that he thoughts so,
but will look into it. A discussion also ensued as to
Members residency at the time of joining the club and a
then a member moving out of state. Bill Hackett also
responded that there is a non resident sticker required
by the State of Florida if the boat remains in the state of
a period of time.
Social: Thanked Docks & Grounds for the work on the
stage. The Steak Fry that had been scheduled for
October 6 has been rescheduled to November 10. The
reasoning, in part, is the cost of the tickets to support
having a band. It has been decided to have a DJ and
lower the cost of the tickets. Also members feel it will be
a little cooler in November. Tickets will not be $15 in
advance. If you have already paid $20, please see the
person you purchased the ticket from and you will be
given a refund of $5. The Board agreed with the
proposed changes. October 20 there may be a private
party in the Club House but it is not definite, I will have a
firm answer by the General Meeting. Doug Fordon will
Co-Chair the October 27 Halloween Party, please bring a
covered dish and I am working on having a DJ. October
29 we will be going to Shooting Straight, the gun range
on 441 and Riverland Road. Monday night is ladies night.
Men’s price is $20. A special thank you to Joe Noble, for
all his work in the Pit. Friday night we had ribs, thank you
Linda.
Planning: Saturday, December 1st at 5 p.m., we will have
a 70th Anniversary party for the club. It is invitation only,
however, all members are invited but RSVP is necessary
for a head county. We will have a band from 5:30 p.m. to
9 p.m. This will be a free event. The Rodeo is in
November.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Docks & Grounds: Still waiting on the airport regarding
cutting the trees behind the Clubhouse. We are waiting
on a response for the floating dock completion on either
Thursday the 4th or Friday the 5th.
Vice Commodore: Waiting on a 3rd estimate for the tiki
hut. We have Alex from Seminole Tiki Huts to do a 20
foot by 40 foot and 2 side huts will run about $20,000.
Planning stated that a member told her that we will not
be doing pavers or tiki huts. Vice Commodore stated it
was inappropriate for members to be making
recommendations and rules. Membership asked if the
electrical lines need to be placed under ground before a
tiki can be put in. Docks & Grounds stated that was
correct. Seminole Tiki Huts stated we do not need
permitting. Upon receipt of final plans, they will be
presented to the Board for review.
NEW BUSINESS
Docks & Grounds: We will be scheduling another Acme
by the end of the month. We will be pouring concrete at
D Dock and other locations around the Boat Club.
Planning: We are going to tone down the previous Long
Term Plan. One of the items will be renovating the
bathrooms. I have obtained a couple of estimates, one
being $9400, part of that is to be ADA compliant. I have
also looked into the Message Board
A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn.
SECRETARY REPORTS Danielle Landi
Minutes of the General Meeting October 8, 2018
Roll Call: All Board Members present.

General of Meeting of September 10, 2018.

Treasurer: Revenues for September, 2018 were $71,381
and Expenses were $64,644. There is a gain of $6,737
over expenses for the month of September. 2 members
resigned in good standing, Alain Balcarzar, a member
since 2010 and Jonathan Baruch a member since 2017.
We had two members pass away, Carl Pasiak and Charles
Langley. They will both be missed.
Docks & Grounds: We have had 2 Acmes. D Dock is
ready to be poured with concrete, thanks to the Acme
guys. The stage is 90% completed and have spent
approximately $642 on that project.
Vice Commodore: Thank you to all of the people that
have put their time and effort into the stage project. Gus
Escobar, a professional painter, Brian McCarraher, Odie
McCloskey, Nick , Del Dickerhoof and of course, Chuck
McIntyre.
Social: Thank you Joe Nobles for feeding the guys doing
the stage. We had the Celebration of Life for Carl, Jen
catered it. This Wednesday, October 10 is the Birthday
Bash, starts around 6:30 p.m. This Friday, the Pit will be
open at 6 p.m. October 13 is our Dinner Cruise at
Rendezvous’ starting at 7 p.m. October 27 is the
Halloween Party. Co-Chair, Doug Fordon, Roseanne, Jody
and Linda did a great job decorating. There will be a
prize for best costume, a DJ and karaoke. Bar opens at
6p.m. and the party begins at 7 p.m. Please bring a
covered dish. This is adults only. We have a private
party on October 20th from 5 p.m. until about 10:30 p.m.,
please respect that a member booked the Clubhouse.
October 29th is target shooting at Shoot Straight. Please
do not drink beforehand. Monday is ladies night. Pit is
open, every Friday night. Breakfast and lunch is served
every Saturday and Sunday morning. Thank you Linda for
our recent rib night.
Planning: The Bergeron Rodeo is November 8, 9 and
10th. I can usually get discount tickets and possible get
you into the VIP Room. December 1st is the L-S-B-C 70th
Anniversary Party. The band will start at 5:30 p.m. and it
will more than likely be a catered event. Details to come.
Membership: Total membership 465 and there are 3
water slips available. The following new members were
presented to the membership and inducted into the club:
Aaron Taliercio, sponsored by Angel Wengerd and
Jerome Smothors, sponsored by Bart Zwerver.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Docks and Grounds: We requested that the airport
provide funds to trim the trees behind the Clubhouse but
we were informed that that is not their policy, so, it will
be an expense of the Club’s to do the structural pruning.
We are ready to pour the concrete on D Dock, the truck
will be here on Friday, October 12th. Acme help is always
needed and appreciated.
Vice Commodore: We have made our first review of all
of the boats on trailers and we have 6 that are not in
compliance. After tonight’s meeting, I will be making
telephone calls to those 6 boat owners. If we do not get
any response, it will be brought before the Board for
further action. Next round will be going through the
marina to see if boats are running or movable and in
sticker compliance. When you became a member, you
agreed to follow the By-Laws.
Social: The Steak Fry scheduled for October 6th has been
postponed until November 10th due to October still being
too warm and members were complaining about the
price of the tickets. It will start at 4 p.m., we will have a
DJ in place of the band, and tickets will now be $15.
Please see Sheila Rounds, Tom Mayor, Dean Freeman or
the Social Director. If you have already paid $20, please
see the person you purchased your ticket from and you
will be refunded $5. Please bring your ticket at that time.
Docks & Grounds asked that some tickets be given to the
Assistant Dock Master at the Pilothouse and Social
agreed.
Planning: Long Term Plan. We will be looking into
renovating the bathrooms at the Clubhouse, update the
water supply, installing the auto flush toilets and urinals,
tiling the walls and updating the message board. The
quote for the bathrooms was around $9,300 and $600
for the message board. If you are still owed Acme hours,
please see myself or Sandra.
NEW BUSINESS:
Treasurer: It’s finance time and we need to have a
finance committee meeting to put the budget together
and the meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23rd
at 7 p.m. all Board Members must attend. If any
members would like to attend, please send an e-mail and
we will reserve you a seat.
Docks and Grounds: We will be having Acme, October
13th, we will be demoing the rest of the courtesy dock
and try to have it completed by November 10th for the
Steak Fry. Thank you to Richard Fallon for paying out of
pocket and repairing the Lighthouse.
Commodore: We need to elect an Election Committee
Chairman. Doug Fordon – 1670, nominated Frank
Yanocha – 1673; Dean Freeman – 1019, nominated Jim
Barker – 170, Jim respectfully declined. Frank Yanocha
will be the Election Committee Chairman.
Vice Commodore: During the raffle prize giveaways,
50/50 and the card game, we will also have 2nd and 3rd
place prizes. All new members should get a name tag
when they become members, and I will try to get blank
name tags, with our logo, and I can provide a label maker
to add your name. The expense for this will be coming
out of the Vice Commodores budget. As for part of the
beautification Plan, there has been discussion of tiki huts
and contemporary canopies. Electrical is our issue and
Damon Carroll has agreed to assist in this process.
Planning: Commodore requested that Planning restate
the Long Term Plan for the members to vote on.
Renovate the bathrooms at the Clubhouse, update the
water supply, install auto flush toilets and urinals, tiling
the walls and updating the message board. The quote
for the bathrooms was around $9,300 and $600 for the
message board. Projected price would be $9,300 for the
bathrooms and $600-$650 for the message board. Thank
you Bill Hackett for all your hard work.
Member Discussion:
Tom Freehling – 1848 Questioned that the Board is
representing the Long Term Plan budget would not
exceed $10,000. Board answered in the affirmative.
Planning also stated that she had bids from last year and
spoke with the individuals and they updated their bids to
the current numbers being presented. A discussion
ensued regarding the pricing. Commodore clarified that
this was a long term plan, it’s not immediate and
additional updates to the pricing will need to be
obtained.
Tony Carruba – 1717 – Offered to do the labor in the
bathrooms for the good of the Club. Commodore stated
that again, this is a Long Term Plan and numbers may
change.
Dean Freeman – 1019 – Questioned if this was a Long
Term Plan and asked if we are still planning for ADA
compliant bathrooms. Planning stated no, not for that
price, Dean stated that you then don’t do the bathrooms
until they can be ADA compliant. Planning stated we
were going to go with a standalone building for ADA
compliance. Docks & Grounds is working with Del to
figure it out.
George Lewis – 1577 – Docks & Grounds already has a
committee, the bathrooms have already been talked
about, this is a last year plan and there is already a plan
in place. This is not a planning position place to go out
and look for estimates. We have qualified members
here, this was last year. There is a plan in place to redo
these bathrooms and bring them up to code. A lively
discussion ensued. Commodore requested the Long
Term Plan be published in the Newsletter for member
review.
Jim Barker – 170 - Questioned if the Long Term Plan was
discussed at the Board Meeting the week prior. A
discussion ensued regarding the subject.
Planning – Stated 3 weeks ago she had a CG come out for
an estimate to repair pavers and for a canopy top. She
asked 2 of the members in the Clubhouse to walk outside
and speak with the individual and was told due to power
issues there will be no canopy or tiki, this is why she went
back to the bathrooms as part of her Long Term Plan.
Tom Terwilliger – 1362 – Pointed out that a motion was
on the floor, seconded and discussed thus he called for a
vote on the Long Term Plan
A vote was put to the members for the Long Term Plan
and it was approved.
Monthly Fishing Tournament: First Place: Erich Domtrovits
Second Place: Joe Samar
Third Place: Nick Dinicola
50/50: 1st

Place – Tom Terwilliger
3rd
Place – Scott Wargo
Card Game: 1st
Place - Scott Wargo – No Winner
2nd
Place - Linda Schmal
3rd
Place – Dean Freeman
Good of the Order:
Scott Wargo – 1617 - Questioned if there will be a list of
dock repairs based upon priority due to them being
unsafe. Docks & Grounds stated they will be taken care
of in due course.
Damon Carroll – 1608 – Questioned having a plan based
on the amount of money we have to get the projects
done that need to be done and make issues from that
point forward maintenance rather than consent repair.
The Commodore responded that even though we have
money in reserve, we cannot spend it all at once and that
is why it is reserved and we have a budget and issues are
voted on by the members.
Dean Freeman – 1019 – Asked the members that if the
Club is putting on an event, and you, as an individual
member have an event scheduled elsewhere, please do
not advertise your event on our Facebook page. Please
respect the Club.
Odin McClusky – 1769 – Asked the members to stop
fighting over issues of spending money. We get
estimates for items that need to be repaired and in most
cases; the Club members will be doing the labor, cutting
the costs of the projects. And stop attacking the Board
for trying to do their job.
Tom Mayor - 1784 – Dolphins play of October 25th,
Sunday the 28th, the bar will still be open. There is a by

week on November 18 for the Dolphins but the bar will
be open for Nascar. The bar will be open on Halloween.
Linda Schmal – 1820 – Stated that she believes the docks
should be our main issue before other projects.
A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn.
Dispute, Debate, Argue or Polemic
It is better to debate a question without settling it than to
settle a question without debating it. Joseph Joubert
Controversy is a state of prolonged public dispute or
debate, usually concerning a matter of opinion.
Controversial issues are held as potentially divisive in a
given society, because they can lead to tension and ill
will.
Debate or debating is a formal method of interactive
and representational argument. In debating, one side
often prevails over the other side by presenting a superior
"context" and/or framework of the issue, which is far
more subtle and strategic.
An argument in logic is a set of one or more meaningful
declarative sentences (or "propositions") known as the
premises along with another sentence known as the
conclusion. Sometimes spoken loudly.
A polemic is a form of dispute, wherein the main efforts
of the disputing parties are aimed at establishing the
superiority of their own points of view regarding an issue.
However, unlike debate, which may seek common ground
between two parties, a polemic is intended to establish
the supremacy of a single point of view by refuting an
opposing point of view. Polemic usually addresses serious
matters.
There is nothing so annoying as arguing with a person
who knows what he’s talking about. Anonymous
Argument without an enemy
1. Never characterize the argument made by someone
you love.
2. Keep short accounts. Always clean up the mess
promptly lest one argument lead to another.
3. Keep “weapons of destruction” in the closet.
4. Apologize quickly.
5. Affirm easily.
6. Compromise often.
7. Stick to the issues.
8. Look for points of agreement and concentrate on
them as you branch out to settle the issue.
The real art of conversation is not only to say the
right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the
