Paul and Barnabas spent an enre year with the church in Anoch, teaching considerable numbers(Acts 11:24-26). They were among the named teachers of that congregaon that ministered to the Lord through teaching (Acts 13:1,2). News Update

Welcome!

For 50 points: I used to be a disciple of John the Baptist, but then became a disciple of Jesus. Who am I?

Answer to last week’s trivia: Balaam’s donkey. She carried him while his two servants accompanied him on the way to Moab (Numbers 22:21-30).

Adult Bible Class

Bible classes and offering Bible classes for all ages have been effective ministry tools for well over a century. However, a recent trend within some denominations has been to replace the Adult Bible class format with Adult Bible Fellowship (ABFs). This does not mean that the classrooms sit empty on Sunday mornings. It means that the emphasis has shifted from teaching and learning to that of fellowship and meeting care needs. The rationale seems to be “Let’s go with small groups because people seem to enjoy them more.”

Our elders have wisely provided opportunities for both, and both can be beneficial for our church family. Their focus on providing the venues and environments that develop our faith and love for one another is a shepherding ministry, and they do it well. In this article, let’s consider the value of the adult Bible class opportunities they provide.

An adult Bible class, by its very definition, is a forum where the Scriptures are taught for our spiritual betterment. Scripture is profitable for teaching! It is also profitable for reaffirming our progress in the faith and for correcting any errors in our understanding. It equips us for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16,17). Bible teaching is the lifeblood a church family. The Christian walk begins with it (Mt. 28:20). Being rescued from the domain off darkness and transferred into the kingdom of Christ (Col. 1:13) we should be steadfast in the apostle’s teaching (Acts 2:42). Paul and Barnabas spent an entire year with the church in Antioch, teaching “considerable numbers” (Acts 11:24-26). They were among the named teachers of that congregation that ministered to the Lord through teaching (Acts 13:1,2). Later, Paul would spend 18 months teaching the word of God among the Corinthians (Acts 18:11) and another three years doing the same in Ephesus (Acts 19:9; 20:31).

Teaching is a gift of ministry that God appointed for His church (1 Cor. 12:28) to build up the body of Christ (Eph. 4:11,12). It is to be exercised (Rm. 12:6,7). This means that without teachers, the church will become spiritually sick and ineffective.

We have men and women who are using this God-given gift to benefit us all. On Sunday morning, Morris Fridie teaches a New Converts Class. Lonnie Ritchie is teaching the letter to the Thessalonians. Bill Rogers and David Singletary are teaching from the book of John, D. C. Brown begins a new class on the epistles of Peter this coming Lord’s day morning. On Wednesday Debbie Carpenter teaches a Ladies Class on “The Kings.” This is offered twice on Wednesdays but will be breaking for the Summer. Tom Fikes is teaching Church History to a Men’s class that meets each Wednesday morning. Wednesday evening a group meets in the auditorium and is currently studying the book of Judges. Finally, every other Sunday evening (except during the summer months) Small Groups meet and study a topic or a biblical text. Currently the topics taught are based on Acts 1-12.
