Raising the Bar in K-12 Mathematics

CONTENT SUMMARY

School districts in Wisconsin are in the process of implementing internationallybenchmarked standards in mathematics. This presentation will focus on Wisconsinand national student achievement data in mathematics and why these newstandards are critical in the effort to ensure that every student is college and careerready by the end of 12th grade.

BENEFITS

The audience will learn why it was necessary to raise the bar in K-12mathematics education and how various organizations are collaborating to providesupport to teachers and districts. They will gain an understanding of how theincreased expectations of the standards will have a positive impact on the future workforce.

David Jorgensen is the Director of Global Supplier Quality for Mercury Marine. He is located at the Corporate Headquarters in Fond du Lac, WI. He originally joined Mercury in 1975 as a Quality Technician. In 1990, he left for a period of time and was VP of Quality & Engineering at Super Steel Products Corp. in Milwaukee. He returned to Mercury in 2000 where he has been in various Quality and Warranty leadership positions.

Jorgensen has a BS in Management from Cardinal Stritch University, and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Milwaukee School of Engineering. He has four ASQ certifications – Quality Engineer, Quality Auditor, Manager of Quality & Organizational Excellence, and Six Sigma Black Belt. He has been the Chairman of Examining & Certification for ASQ Section 1206 in Northeastern Wisconsin for over 25 years.

I have served the Milwaukee Section in various positions – Newsletter Editor, Treasurer, and a member of the Education Committee for the past 15 years. I have enjoyed serving you, our members, and found it rewarding. I look forward to assuming the position of Chair of your section, and leading a group of dedicated and talented Quality professionals who share a common passion for Quality. It will be a challenge for me personally, and I hope I meet your expectations.

Your Milwaukee section is a service organization dedicated to advancing Quality in our world. Our future growth and success depends on you. So take an active role in your organization and be involved. You can participate in a variety of ways; by attending dinner meetings, attending our Spring Quality Training Seminars, encouraging co-workers to join ASQ, or volunteering to be a member of your Leadership Team. 2013 Badger State Science & Engineering Fair Award WinnersThe  ASQ  Milwaukee  Sec0on  is  pleased  to  con0nue  to  support  the  annual  Badger  State  Science  and  Engineering  Fair  by  providing  a  $1000  sponsorship.  The  fair  took  place  on  March  23rd  at  MarqueGe  University.  There  were  about  60  total  entries  in  8  different  categories,  in  this  year’s  fair.  The  ASQ  judging  team  reviewed  entries  and  awarded  two  student  par0cipants  a  $250  award  each.

The  2013  Science  Fair  ASQ  recipients  are:Ms.  Clarise  White,  pictured  at  right,  with  her  entry  Predic0ng  the  Community  Structure  of  Quagga  Mussels.    Ms.  White  was  the  first  place  winner  in  the  Environmental  category,  and  placed  second  Best  of  Fair.

Ali  Myszewski  and  Jenna  Lieungh  with  their  entry  Regulatory  T-­‐cell  interac0ons  with  VCAM-­‐1  under  flow.  They  placed  3rd  in  the  Medicine  and  Health  category.

Projects  were  judged  for  precision  of  thought,  crea0vity  and  applica0on.  BSSEF  is  affiliated  with  the  Interna0onal  Science  and  Engineering  (ISEF),  the  world’s  largest  celebra0on  of  science.  Congratula0ons  to  our  winners!
