“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower” Steve Jobs

This quotation by Steve Jobs reects the spirit with which we have built these rst ten years of our business story.A story made of people who believed in a project that had to be developed from scratch. The only element available was our signicant personal experience combined with a strong commitment to creating something special. We started in 2001, in the midst of a full-edged economic crisis and of the unsettlement caused by the introduction of the Euro. Getting some attention in a market already occupied by several well-established companies was no easy endeavour, but reliability and technology combined with the strong will and dedication of Raytec’s sta turned this business project into a success story. The eorts of our team, to whom go our most sincere thanks, and our own eorts have conrmed the concept that even in dicult times great opportunities can be seized.

OVER 500 MACHINES INSTALLED ALL OVER THE WORLDEven though we prefer to talk in terms of technological success, a quick look at gures shows us that Raytec machines have been installed in 26 countries and applications have been designed for 21 dierent products. It was not long ago that we reached the 300 machine mark with the delivery of a system to Bonduelle Italy and not much later, in May 2011, we delivered our 500th machine to Pagani’s SICA.By the end of 2011 the number had grown to 567, but with a portfolio of orders that made us condent in predicting that the ceremony for the delivery of our 600th could be held during the UNITED FRESH exhibition in Dallas, May 2012.

Raytec implemented the Blueight technology on its Discovery and Spray sorters. The achieved goal of the project was to include in one machine the technologies that other manufacturers typically do on separate platforms.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

The HSL Colour functionHSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) is a color analysis function. Compared to RGB, HSL is a color representation similar to human perception.

The Cit functionVisible color analisis is often insucient for the identication of foreign bodies. CIT (Chlorophyll, Infrared, Transparency) analisis highlights foreign bodies on the basis of: low uorescent light emission, low infrared light reection, transparency

The Blob functionA "Blob" is a group of pixels next to each other that are recognized as incorrect by the sorting recipe. The BLOB function rejects only the groups of pixels (blobs) whose sum of weights is higher than a dened value.

The Shape functionThe SHAPE function calculates nine mathematical parameters for each inspected object. Those parameters are representative of geometric characteristics of the object such as eccentricity, compactness, or the presence of protuberance.

Stem functionThe STEM function allows the detection and rejection of any stalk or stem or wire that can be present in the product. STEM function analyzes if there are thin objects in the product stream.

The Glass functionThis function allows the detection and rejection of any kind of transparent piece of glass and plastic. The GLASS function can be used with every kind of product as it does not inuence the other sorting parameters.

Function Big StopThis function allows controlling the presence of dangerous foreign bodies that we can nd. The typical samples are the frog or the mouse. The "Big Stop" allows a series of programmable choice as: object calculation allocated in three dierent classes of dangerousness. Automatic imagine capture of dangerous contaminates, alarm generation (with option to stop the machine).

The Fototrainer technology is a combination of 4 analysis that combined togheter makes the system very ecient on contaminant detection.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

FOTOTRAINER

RG-IRThe system is equipped with ve dierent light sources that are characteristic of the followings colors:1 = Red 2 = Green 3 = Near Infrared 1 4 = Near Infrared 2 5 = Near Infrared 3 The two frequencies of the visible spectrum allow to color analysis. The three frequencies of the infrared spectrum allow to detect the foreign bodies and the rotten products, also when these have the same color of the good product.

3WAYThe system allows to have two dierent classes of rejection:1 = good product; 2 = foreign bodies (stones, mice, wood)3 = organic defects (rotten, green, non conforming color)

BlobA BLOB is a group of pixels in contact with each other that are identied as defective by the sorting recipe. The system allows to associate a “weight” to all the dierent kinds of defects that the sorting recipe can discriminate. Weight is associated with all the pixels that are identied as defective on the grabbed image. The system rejects a BLOB only if the BLOB weight (sum of the weights of all the adjacent defective pixels) is higher than a set value.

SnapThe thresolds are adjustables directly fron the control panel with the Snap system.Directly on the photo grabbed by the system it is possible to verify how the system will act on the defects and at which way of rejection the defects will be assigned

The rst sorter with 4x4mm resolution celebrates its 10th birthday, just like the company that created it!

Over 130 installations have been made in these years with this machine model. In 2009 the double reject sorter with pneumatic ngers system was presented, for applications such as potatoes, peaches, tomatoes and onions.

Access to new sectors called for new evolutions which Raytec immediately responded to with the addition of air jet ejection. Today we have three dierent versions of 3-way machines for 4 models (20,30,40 and 50 channels), all equipped with the new Fototrainer technology.

High Speedraynbow

Raytec have always been committed to nding the best solution with the minimum investment. The market needs to limit costs without reducing quality and it is in this spirit that we have designed our High Speed sorter, based on the famous Raynbow.

Its electronics is adapted to sorting speed, which goes from Raytec’s standard 70 m/min to no less than 120m/min.

Fresh o the design table, it has already found two very dierent applications: - foreign objects, including animals, in industrial-scale string bean sorting;- rotten, colour and foreign objects in industrial-scale fresh tomato sorting.

With an increased length of only 1 metre, output is double compared to the standard version (based on same model/number of channels).Raynbow HS is now available in the 40 and 50 channel version.

DionysosDionysos

We have always strongly believed that a quality product is achieved through a chain of actions and procedures that go from the seed to the nished product, in this case in the bottle.

In the middle of this chain, an important contribution is provided by Blueight technology sorters.

Removing green grapes or stalks is relatively easy, but the real challenge is to remove the “dry” grapes which, if present in large quantities, would result in a higher sugar content of the wine produced.

In addition to this small dark insects can be present: these are impossible for people to spot during the production campaign rush.

The answer to all of this is Dionysos, the sorter designed specically for producers of excellent wines.

In the vegetable sector, decisions regarding the choice of the best sorter for a specic product will mostly be based on two well-established techniques: the so-called laser technology and camera technology.

Both of these are valuable techniques, but up until a few years ago laser was probably considered the most complete system despite its poor stability and excessive cost. With their new Blueight technology, Raytec believe they have now inverted these excellence positions.

With the new Spray version S-250 Blueight automatic sorting becomes truly eective even in the production of Iceberg with chopped or shredded cut, providing important advantages:- Increased output with same line (up to 1.5t/h with Spray).- Reduced manual operations at preparation conveyor, with consequent reduction of labour costs.- Recovery of approximately 10% extra good product compared to a fully manual line.

Therefore an important reduction of product waster, because Spray remove only what is necessary.

This of course complements the other functions of the Spray machine for removal of organic (animals, larvae, etc.) or non-organic (plastic, stones, glass, etc.) foreign objects.

NEW APPLICATION

All the machines available on the market today have driver cards for ejection valve control that can only recognize electrical faults: open circuit or short circuit. But users of optical-electronic sorters know that this type of problem occurs rarely.

The pneumatic circuit of the valve is where the failure is more likely to occur leading to rejection errors.Raytec is the rst company in the world to create a system that works in real time, while the machine is operating. This is not a function that needs to be activated when the machine is in test phase, but a continuous inspection that checks response time and valve opening at each ejection.

In applications such as corn or peas, products are ying through at approx. 180m/min which means that with a mere 1mS valve uncertainty, the object will have moved by 3mm: therefore rejection could be incorrect.

NEW FUNCTION

smart-jet

We must also consider that conditions such as humidity, wear or small air impurities can lead to the valve clogging up and that it will not be easy to detect the one valve out of the 176 valves that has this problem; if you consider the noise normally present on the line the only solution will be to wait for shift end leading to the possibility of product complaints.

AIR FLOW CONTROL FOR RELIABLE REJECTION

NEWS8P A G E

A “critical” point in the quality control chain of food processing companies is sorting tomatoes after peeling.

Up to now this function had been performed by special personnel working on a number of conveyors to give them enough space and time to check the whole production, generating some critical points:- Prolonged product exposure to air, with increased probability of contamination.- Signicant loss of juice- Large quantity of water wasted to keep conveyors hygienically clean.- Objective diculty in checking all of the product.- Some diculty in keeping up with peaks of defective tomatoes and picking them out correctly without also removing good tomatoes.

When we add everything up, it is easy to see the advantage, also in economic terms, of introducing Rayvolution the “revolutionary” Raytec camera sorter that replaces manual sorting almost completely. Blueight technology recognizes and rejects items that had so far been impossible to handle with traditional sorters.

Take for example a perfectly red tomato, with no defects but “squashed”; Blueight is today the only technology that can recognize it and reject it.

Defects such as green and yellow colour, rotten and necrotic fruits are easy to spot but up to now it had not been possible to classify products by defect size and, most importantly, with size starting from 3 mm (BLOB function).

Blueight technology, together with the special feature of the ejector assembly, gives a percentage of eciency on foreign objects, whether organic or non organic, that is close to 100%.

No more ballistic problems connected with the shape of the item: any item, if needed, can be rejected.

So we can expect a real Rayvolution to take place in tomato processing factories: high quality of end product; reduction of labour costs; increased line eciency.

NEW TECHNOLOGY

MICRORAY MR-60 is an innovative system for detection of foreign bodies.

There are very capable Metal and X-ray sensors available today. However these systems do not oer a complete solution as many foreign bodies are not detected by the traditional technology.

The system was born out of a need to detect typical foreign bodies of plastics, rubber, wood and pits etc. that existing technologies do not address.

The system opens up new opportunities for food suppliers to protect their processes and to deliver additional values to their customers

X-RAY TECHNOLOGY

A compact machine that is only 600 mm wide but maintains a functional structure with separate compartments; it can be used in three totally dierent sectors:

- PIPE: inspection of products pumped through 50, 80 or 100 mm pipes with only 300W x-ray energy.- CAN: linear tunnels designed for a variety of single formats ranging from 400 g to 3 kg can; bricks can also be inspected still with very low x-ray energy emissions.- BELT: for in-package applications such as bags, small boxes, etc. Raytec does not propose the classic X-ray control through metal detectors.

Our software is not a simple ”there...not there, with threshold”. We are talking about a real vision system that analyzes the morphology of the product to understand what hazardous things it could contain.

Raybox : not a box with built-in automation, but an actual CE approved switchboard.
