Learning Objectives
This session is aimed at taking a glimpse of
news as an essential product of journalism,
the types of news and how news relates with
mass media. This part will be the first
discussion before entering the discussion on
reporting and newscaster techniques.

News is anything that people need to know.
Delivering news means giving the required information
to the people.

News is an important information that attracts

people/ others to read. Or the journalists (can)

News can be defined as a neutral description of
current events/ facts which may attract the

opinion on news and stated that:
News is the fastest report on newest facts or ideas
and the report is right, interesting, and important

the Court that began on June 2009 not only have
absorbed much of the ‘space’ in either broadcast

It is a form of news that provides official
statement or how the media reacts on
certain issues.

Caricature
It is a method of providing news in a form
of drawing, picture, or cartoon. The
pictures contain message, opinion or
social critiques and are conveyed in
humorous ways.13

Is cartoon effective to convey messages?
An effective cartoon is when the cartoon has successfully
created fun (without feeling offense) to others, including
the cartoonists, when they see/ read the pictures/ news.

It is a ‘creative’ form (free style) of
providing news by taking the lines from
sources. The themes of corner can vary
from social economics, politics, military,
sports, environment, and so on.16

It is a form of providing news by people
writing news or private opinion on
something that of their interest/ concern.
The purpose of the writing is to inform,
persuade, or to entertain.17

Mass media is a means of communication that
operate on a large scale, reaching and
involving virtually everyone in a society to a
greater or lesser degree. (McQuail’s: 1983:4).
