Belle Silver Lining Senior Meals Program Is The Real Deal! We have been getting high praise from Belle Silver Lining family

regarding our new meal program that was introduced September 2020 to our young-at-heart population in Butte County. Our meals are made with fresh ingredients and much is purchased or donated from local farmers and merchants. We provide real food, with real nutrition, and have been told our meals are “real good”!

Our dedicated kitchen manager, Nona Howard, kitchen aids Bailey Talkington and Karen Wopinski, and kitchen volunteers have been going above and beyond to make sure each meal is fresh, hot, and packaged well for our seniors to receive quality meals.

Our volunteer delivery drivers provide wonderful service and enjoy bringing these homemade, delicious meals. It is also a chance for those

that are home bound to have someone check on them periodically, which can provide peace of mind.

Not only do we offer delivery service, but dining in or carry out is available as well.

The cost is a suggested donation of $5.00 per meal (delivery included)

however, we ask that you base your contribution on your comfort level. No one 60 or older will be denied a meal. We provide meals

seven days per week from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and anyone who

calls prior to 10:30 a.m. for a delivery will still receive their ordered meal.

Our monthly menu is available in our newsletter, on our web site at www.bellesilverlining.com and

can also be found on our Facebook page. For questions, concerns, or delivery, please feel free to contact us

at Belle Silver Lining, 608-892-6285, and we will be happy to help you.

Below are some of the comments we have been receiving:

“What a delicious meal and such friendly people!”

“Your meals are so good and I get so much food that I can’t eat it all!”

“My dad told me how much he enjoys your meals. I am so happy I contacted you to set up this meal delivery for him and I don’t have to worry he’s not getting enough nutrition now.”

“Tell your cook the meal was absolutely wonderful!”

“Your meals are always so good, so fresh and so much! Thank you!”

“Wow, so much better than I expected! I will definitely be ordering more often!”

“I can’t wait to tell my neighbor!”

“Your food is so yummy and I love the staff!”

“Tell Nona that yesterday’s lunch was so very good!”

“Thank you so much for all you do. My neighbor discovered you recently. [She] raves about your food and she is excited to participate in activities. It is February. It is cold and grey. And my neighbor is happy as a lark. You are making a difference.”

Our success at Belle Silver Lining is greatly attributed to the passionate and dedicated services of our volunteers. We would like to give tribute and our gratitude to all those that volunteer their time and skills – we would not be here without you.

Literally… Belle Silver Lining would not survive without our wonderful volunteers that give their energy and expertise to our members and employees. Because of their sacrifice, they have enabled us to keep our doors open and continue to help fulfill our mission in celebrating, embracing, and serving our older citizens for the betterment of our community.

Our volunteers range extensively from watering plants to the operations conducted by our board members. They provide needed services and expertise in our day-to-day operations in administrative help, cleaning, serving members, assisting employees, conducting maintenance needs, and thrift store operations. Because of our volunteers, our membership has grown,

Volunteers Are the Heartbeat of Belle Silver Liningand additional services are being added continually to

help fulfill our members’ needs and endeavors. Volunteers bring our seniors social connectiveness, support and activities they cannot receive elsewhere in the community.

Not only do these wonderful, selfless people provide quality work

and enthusiastic attitudes that gives excitement to our atmosphere, but they

also help our staff to maintain employment and receive competitive wages due to volunteering their time and skills. They also help our bottom line further by allowing us to dedicate monetary gifts to the most needed operations in our non-profit organization to the betterment of our members and staff.

Thank you, Volunteers, for all you do here at Belle Silver Lining. Your efforts, love and smiles make it a pleasure to serve our elderly population and our seniors enjoy your camaraderie and the hard work you do for them every day.

All of us here at Belle Silver Lining would like to say,

On April 16th the Short Chaps 4H club was here at Belle Silver Lining serving Caramel Rolls, decorating our delivery to go containers, and taking care of some much needed maintenance work. What a great time we all had! Thank you, Short Chaps, for your hard work, but most of all, thank you for taking the time to sit and visit with all of us older folks!! Your time was the most special gift of all! Also, much thanks to the moms and grandparents that came and helped as well. You’ve done a fantastic job with your kiddos! We’re looking forward to seeing you all again!

CORNERCORNER

A speech therapist should be contacted when coughing ensues from eating or drinking consistently. This disorder is known as dysphagia. It’s especially concerning if dysphagia is causing weight loss.

Coughing is the body’s response when something incorrectly goes into the lungs and, if frequent, is cause for concern in the swallowing process.

Swallowing involves complex coordination between the mouth, tongue, throat and esophagus. A breakdown in any of those areas can cause dysphagia.

Esophageal dysphagia (which needs medical attention) may include the sensation of food being stuck in the throat. Causes may include:

• A problem with the esophageal muscle• Spasms in the esophagus• A narrowed esophagus due to tumors or

scarring from acid reflux• A foreign body partially blocking the throat

or esophagus

Oropharyngeal dysphagia may involve weak throat muscles. This may be caused by neurological disorders. Older patients are at higher risk for dysphagia. Also, certain conditions may put patients at higher risk such as:

• Cancer• Parkinson’s disease• Multiple sclerosis• Muscular dystrophy• GERD (severe acid reflux)• Stroke

A Speech Therapist can help patients with weak musculature deficits that cause dysphagia. Proven exercises are used to improve strength, mobility and control of the muscles, allowing patients to swallow properly. Diet modifications and compensatory strategies can also help in treatment of dysphagia.

In some cases, techniques that provide small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles may be used in order to advance swallowing. It is combined with traditional therapy to treat dysphagia. This is a safe and effective method that is proven to help patients with weakness in the pharyngeal muscle.

There is hope for patients who are having difficulty swallowing. With a therapist’s help they can either reverse the problem or find ways to alleviate their difficulty.

If you or a loved one have concerns about dysphagia, contact a medical professional to be properly diagnosed. If Speech Therapy treatment would be suited to your needs, contact Heartland Home Health today at 605-723-4663 for a consultation to set up home therapy.

We are watching out for the well-being of our staff and members. If we find it necessary to cancel activities, we will

make a public announcement.

If by "crunches" you mean the sound that bacon makes when you eat it, then, yes, I do crunches.

It takes a Mother’s LOVE to make a house a home,

A place to be remembered, no matter where we roam...

It takes a Mother’s PATIENCE to bring a child up right,

And her COURAGE and her CHEERFULNESS to make a dark day bright...

It takes a Mother’s THOUGHTFULNESS to mend the heart’s deep “hurts”,

And her SKILL and her ENDURANCE to mend little socks and shirts...

It takes a Mother’s KINDNESS to forgive us when we err,

To sympathize in trouble and bow her head in prayer...

It takes a Mother’s WISDOM to recognize our needs

And to give us reassurance by her loving words and deeds...

It takes a Mother’s ENDLESS FAITH, her CONFIDENCE and TRUST

To guide us through the pitfalls of selfishness and lust...

And that is why in all this world there could not be another

Who could fulfill God’s purpose as completely as a MOTHER!

Senior Life Insurance: Is It Worth Purchasing Over 50?By Luke Redd (edited) | Last updated June 17, 2020(This is the first part of a series that will continue in the coming issues.)

Are you concerned about what you will (or won't) be leaving behind for your loved ones when you pass away? That's why it's important to understand your options—keeping in mind that not all life insurance plans are created equal. Besides, you might not even need a life insurance policy. Or the options available to you may be expensive and your options for coverage becomes more limited.

This information is not a substitute for personalized, professional advice. Every individual's circumstances are different.Determine Whether You Actually Need Life Insurance

If you already have enough savings or other liquid assets to ensure that your obligations will be met after you die, you may not need life insurance. However, de-pending on your other motivations such as security of loved ones, final expenses, legacy contributions, or reim-bursement for care giving or financial loss, you still might benefit from getting it.

An 80-year-old can get life insurance through some companies, but the age limit for life insurance is usually 80 or 85. (That is, you can purchase a new policy until you reach that age.) A few companies do offer new, lim-ited-coverage policies for people over 90, but the cost tends to be higher than many seniors can afford.

Some of the most common reasons why seniors buy life insurance include: Financial security for loved ones, payment of final expenses, inheritance for heirs, legacy contributions, or reimbursement for care giving or po-tential financial loss: Name One or More Potential Beneficiaries

Any person, trust, or organization can be a beneficia-ry—even a child under the age of 18. It's important to

remember that, even after purchasing your policy, you can update the listed beneficiaries at any time. Calculate How Much Coverage to Purchase

Also known as the death benefit or face value, the coverage amount of a life insurance policy is the total sum of money the beneficiaries will receive when the policyholder passes away. Many experts recommend us-ing this simple formula in order to calculate it: your fi-nancial obligations –– your liquid assets. Here's how that breaks down:

• Financial obligations include things like mortgage payments, credit card debt, outstanding loans, property taxes, estimated funeral expenses, money for an emergency fund, and the total amount of lost income you want to replace (based on how many years it may be needed).

• Liquid assets include cash or other things of value that can be quickly converted to cash.

It’s helpful to use an online life insurance calculator when working everything out for your particular situa-tion.

After determining the ideal amount of coverage to purchase, figure out which financial obligations would cause the largest burdens for your loved ones.

Just like other types of insurance, with senior life in-surance, premium affordability is partially tied to how much coverage you buy. If you want to keep your pre-mium as low as possible, it's wise to only cover the most essential financial obligations.

Or you may simply decide on an amount based on the affordability of premiums while comparing plans from multiple insurance companies.

Next issue will cover types of policies to consider.

How to Keep Your Body’s Defenses Strong After Age 65

There’s an irony in living longer — we’re more like-ly to see our bodies decline. Your immune system it-self is not immune. It’s known as immune senescence, which is a term to describe the tendency for an aging immune system to allow more infections, cancers and diseases to take hold.

Inflammation and infections play the biggest role in weakening your aging immune system. But, you can fight them.

The following five things will keep your aging im-mune system as strong as possible for as long as pos-sible:If you smoke, do everything to stop

If you smoke, quit now. It’s hard to do, but this is the single greatest, avoidable negative influence on your immune system.

Your immune system has its own internal clock which has to last us a lifetime. We measure this clock by the length of molecules on our DNA, called telo-meres. Smoking and a number of other bad habits shorten our telomeres and run out our immunologic clock before our time.

It destroys antioxidants in your blood, increases autoimmune responses and kills antibodies — your body’s fighter cells that stay on alert for infection.

Smoking also causes lung inflammation, using up antibodies that could fight infections elsewhere. This all puts you more at risk for other illnesses, such as pneumonia and flu.Keep drinking under control

Avoid excessive alcohol consumption — that means five or more drinks on one occasion during five or more days in a 30-day period. Not only does drinking too much limit immunity-boosting nutrients in your body, but it also lowers your white blood cell’s ability to kill germs.

Drinking boosts your risk of infection. If you’re a heavy drinker, you’re twice as likely to die from pneu-monia as those who don’t drink as much. Heavy drink-ers also make up more than one-third of those with tuberculosis.

While excessive drinking is detrimental, occasional consumption of red wine, in small amounts, is com-patible with the anti-inflammatory Mediterranean diet plan.Don’t worship the sun

Avoid exposing your skin to too much sunlight. While vitamin D from sunlight does help support healthy immune function, too much UV radiation can alter your DNA, ultimately boosting your risk of can-cer. You also may get more cold sores.Limit your exposure to chemicals and carcinogens

It’s good to limit your exposure to other carcino-gens as well. Avoid burning coal and or cooking too much with charcoal. Also avoid man-made chemicals, including hydrocarbons, as much as possible. If overweight, work to lose those extra pounds

Abdominal fat triggers inflammation and boosts your risk of heart disease and diabetes. As you age, fat can build up in your bone marrow, muscle and liver — further boosting harmful inflammation. Even small amounts of weight loss can have an anti-inflam-matory effect.

Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables can be a major step in developing a healthy diet and can also help you lose weight and boost your body’s antioxi-dant levels.

Another helpful tip is to examine your diet: How often are you eating fried foods? How often are you eating processed foods? Take steps to gradually re-place these foods with foods that are fresh and high in nutritional value.

If you take these five steps, you’ll go a long way to-ward keeping your immune system healthy and at the ready to fight outside invaders — even as you grow older.

The health benefits of hiking for seniors have been proven by numerous medical studies.

“Walking is a tre-mendously good ac-tivity for senior citi-zens. It’s cheap, it’s simple, almost any-body can do it,” says. Dr. Michael Pratt, the acting chief for the Physical Activity and Health Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Preven-tion in Atlanta (CDC). “It helps seniors and has very real benefits for maintaining mo-bility and indepen-dence.”

Pratt states in Ameri-can Trails that, “statistics show that most older adults aren’t getting enough activity and we know that they stand to benefit from regular exer-cise.”

Hiking provides seniors with an opportunity to get out-doors and engage in an activity that is gentler on their joints since many hiking trails are softer than walking on asphalt or concrete.

A study published in the Journal of the American Geri-atric Society revealed that “seniors who walked at least four hours per week reduced their risk of hospi-talization as a result of cardiovas-cular events.”

Regularly going on hikes can result in various, well-documented benefits for seniors, including:• Improved cardiovascular health and circulation

• Reduced arthritis, joint and knee pain

• Increase in bone density, which can improve bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis

• Stronger muscles• Decrease in feelings of depres-sion and isolation

• Increased cognitive function• Improved memory an reaction
