INTECRAL project is a jointly developed scientific cooperation supported by the German Federal Ministry of

Education and Research (BMBF) and the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock Project Rio Rural (SEAPEC-

PRR). It aims to improve the competitiveness of the rural economic sector in due consideration of a sustainable

watershed management, including environmental risk mitigation and protection of natural resources.

The study was carried out between the 14th of march and the 21th of July of 2014, under the framework of the INTECRAL Project activity: “Contribution for a Sustainable Management of Water Resources by the Reuse of Sew-age Water in Decentralized Systems“.

Involved institutions ITT/CUAS, BDZ, Tilia, Rio Rural, EMATER Nova Friburgo, CB-

CBHRDR/AGEVAP.

Collaborators Ollin Segovia, Sabine Schlüter, Juan Ramírez (ITT); Nahúm Medellín (UASLP); Jaime Cardona (BDZ) Stefan Böttger (Tilia Unwelt), Jarbas Saraiba, Adriano Lopes Nelson Tei-xeira and Helga Hissa (PRR); Ocimar Teixeira, Gerson Yu-nez (EMATER Nova Friburgo).

Research area The research took place in the microbasin of Barracão dos Mendes, Brazil (Figure 1).

Relevant activities

The main activities developed in this research correspond to a participatory diagnosis, 55 sanitation surveys and 7 semi-structured interviews. In addition, an economic valuation was performed for the totally decentralized and semi-decentralized wastewater treatment technologies, using the Environmental Cost-benefit Analysis (ECBA) as a decision mak-ing tool .

Relevant results The main results of this assessment can be summarized as:

The water quality is threatened by the growing presence of fecal coliforms and agrotoxics in the study area.

High dependence on water springs for supply agricul-tural and domestic demand.

The potential of semi-decentralized technologies was evaluated through an ECBA, specially taking into con-sideration the environmental benefits in relation to the standard decentralized systems.

Next steps The next steps for the period 2014—2015 correspond to:

Install small monitoring station for measure water quality in the micro-basin.

Measure ground water and freshwater quality among the different communities of the microbasin.

Improve environmental education regarding sanita-tion, through the program „Water fun Water for Life”.

Develop of a regional assessment of the potential of decentralized wastewater treatment solutions for Nova Friburgo.

Acknowledgement The researchers would like to express their gratitude to the members of the PRR for their strongly support during our field-work in Brazil. Special thanks to the staff of EMATER Nova Friburgo for their information and fieldwork support. Many thanks to the Epidemiology and Environmental Monitoring Departments of the Health Agency of Nova Friburgo, and to the members of the Posto de Saúde Centenario for their col-laboration, and to André Bohrer from CBH-Rio dois Rios. Deep-

est gratitude to the presidents of the microbasin associations: Jorge Pajuaba, Carlos Cordeiro, Margarete Satsumi, Rondineli

Gomes and Hélio Muniz.
