Industry experts think that 85% of job site theft is an inside job. Make sure we’re able to keep the other % 15 out!

Whenever a new construction project is undertaken, there is some amount of uncertainty about the likelihood that the project will be completed within budget and on schedule. The effective contractor will generally be able to efficiently manage the resources required to complete the facility. Unfortunately, some aspects of projects cannot be fully controlled. For example, the achievement of the project objectives can be jeopardized by the deliberate efforts of others, namely thieves and vandals. Thieves and vandals can directly impact the success of a project and diminish the potential profitability of the project being constructed. The costs of theft and vandalism on a project are difficult to predict as they are somewhat random occurrences, but projects that are victim to such losses can face major losses.

Besides the monetary losses resulting from theft and vandalism, associated indirect costs should also be considered. Costly job delays, downtime for operators, higher insurance premiums, and the possible cancellation of an insurance policy, with the accompanying risk of jeopardizing bonding and borrowing power, make jobsite security practices crucial for commercial construction firms like ours.

Because of this, theft and vandalism can be major cost components of a construction project. The cost is potentially sufficient to make the difference between making a profit or incurring a loss on a project.

Now for an effective Security everyone needs ensuring the following:

Check our construction site security lightingLighting reduces construction site crime because it not only discourages prowlers but offers any neighbors or passers by and our monitoring service to see any suspicious activity.

1) Intruders Take Advantage of Glare There are numerous reports of intruders knowingly

taking advantage of the glare thrown by poorly positioned security lights or no lights. Direct light onto the areas we’re trying to protect rather than out into the eyes of potential observers.

2) Bright White Light is best Bright white light provides good color

differentiation making people easier to identify and license plates easier to read. Bright white lights are also more expensive to keep lit. The difference in visibility is worth the money though. As a general rule of thumb observers should be able to easily identify a face at 30 feet.

Theft and vandalism: major construction project cost components

Page 8: News Letter 24th feb 10 - EraGroup Letter_24th_feb_10.pdfEra Buildsys successfully completed the project for Century Metals in Haridwar and concurrently bagged a number of new projects

3) Protect Our Power Source Thieves can and will cut power lines. Ideally

power lines stay at a height of 24 feet or higher. Further, electric meter boxes can be targets as we’ll so if our site has one, us need to ensure to protect it well or find some other power source. Ideally we have generators or some other independent source of power for construction security lighting.

Need to be aware of security questioning tactics for the construction site

I recommend: A strong line of questioning:Project Managers need to train the on-site staff to get a little bit more invasive with people they don’t recognize. Further, it’s important that they move from the general to the more specific. This helps to root out those who have invaded our job site.

So instead of “Do you work here?” Train our crew to ask a series of questions along these lines:

1) “Who do you work for here?2) “What do you do for that sub contractor?”3) “When did you and our sub come on the site?”

The third question could - and should - be even more specific than that. But be sure to ask questions that only that subcontractor’s crew would know, as it’s likely that the person posing as an authorized visitor will know a thing or two about the profession he claims.

If the person we’re questioning hesitates, tries to change the subject, provides bizarre answers or gets overly defensive the questioner may have reason to contact authorities. If the person provides quick, simple and assured answers then this person belongs on the site.

We need to be proactive in order to curtail theft and vandalism in the sites, rather than waiting for problems to arise. The initial investment in developing a complete site security plan prior to beginning construction work can be miniscule when compared to the losses that can result from the theft of an expensive piece of equipment. We should also take into account the specific area that we are working in and realize that there are different potential problems associated with different sites whether located in remote, metropolitan, or neighborhood sites. Recognizing that potential problems of theft or vandalism exist on every construction site, we need to implement measures to reduce the probability of being a target for thieves and vandals. Utilizing several different measures and techniques in the prevention of theft and vandalism has proven to be successful. We need to understand that incidents of theft should be reported to law enforcement, no matter how seemingly insignificant the loss. Most of all, techniques that are found to be effective in curtailing theft and vandalism should be

openly shared within the construction community.

Construction sites differing by region, type of project, and size of project could be observed throughout the life of the project to find out what the potential problems are and what solutions proved to be most beneficial. A large amount of data could be generated and further prove to be beneficial in the prevention of theft and vandalism in the group.

By becoming proactive in securing a jobsite can make the difference between crime becoming a minor nuisance instead of a major problem that has the potential of draining profits from an otherwise successful project.

At Era Group, security alone cannot be controlled by the Head office or just by the security agency but with the constant effort of all only when we all work transparently for the betterment and growth of the group.

I am sure in 2010 we will all help Era Group in reducing theft and security issues.

Holi FestivalOne of the major festivals of India, Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is the month of March as per the Gregorian calendar. Holi festival may be celebrated with various names and people of different states might be following different traditions. But, what makes Holi so unique and special is the spirit of it which remains the same throughout the country and even across the globe, wherever it is celebrated.

PreparationsEntire country wears a festive look when it is time for Holi celebration. Market places get abuzz with activity as frenzied shoppers start making preparations for the festival. Heaps of various hues of gulal and abeer can be seen on the roadside days before the festival. Pichkaris in innovative and modern design too come up every year to lure the children who wish to collect them as Holi memorabilia and of course, to drench everybody in the town. Womenfolk too start making early preparations for the holi festival as they cook loads of gujiya, mathri and papri for the family and also for the relatives. At some places specially in the north women also make papads and potato chips at this time.

Season of BloomEverybody gets delighted at the arrival of Holi as the season itself is so gay. Holi is also called the Spring Festival - as it marks the arrival of spring the season of hope and joy. The gloom of the winter goes as Holi promises of bright summer days. Nature too, it seems rejoices at the arrival of Holi and wears its best clothes. Fields get filled with crops promising a good harvest to the farmers and flowers bloom colouring the surroundings and filling fragrance in the air.

LegendsChildren take special delight in the tradition and this has another legend attached to itapart from the ‘Holika’ legend. It says that there was once an ogress Dhundhi who used to trouble children in the kingdom of Prithu. She was chased away by children on the day of Holi. Therefore, children are allowed to play pranks at the time of ‘Holika Dahan’. Some also celebrate the death of evil minded Pootana. The ogress tried to Lord Krishna as an infant by feeding it poisonous milk while executing the plan of Kansa, Krishna’s devil uncle. However, Krishna sucked her blood and brought her end. Some who view the origin of festivals from seasonal cycles believe that Pootana represents winter and her death the cessation and end of winter. In South India, people worship Kaamadeva- the god of love and passion for his extreme sacrifice. According to a legend, Kaamadeva shot his powerful love arrow on Lord Shiva to revoke his interest in the worldly affairs in the interest of the earth. However, Lord Shiva was enraged as he was in deep mediation and opened

his third eye which reduced Kaamadeva to ashes. Though, later on the request of Rati, Kaamadeva’s wife, Shiva was pleased to restore him back.

Play of ColorsGreat excitement can be seen in people on Holi when it is actually the time for the play of colours. Shops and offices remain closed for the day and people get all the time to get crazy and whacky. Bright colours of gulal and abeer fill the air and people take turns in pouring colour water over each other. Children take special delight in spraying colours on one another with their pichkaris and throwing water balloons and passers by. Women and senior citizen form groups called tolis and move in colonies - applying colours and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance on the rhythm of dholak and mouthwatering Holi delicacies are the other highlights of the day.

Expression of LoveLovers too long to apply colours on their beloved. This has a popular legend behind it. It is said that the naughty and mischievous Lord Krishna started the trend of playing colours. He applied colour on her beloved Radha to make her one like him. The trend soon gained popularity amongst the masses. No wonder, there is no match to the Holi of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana - the places associated with the birth and childhood of Radha and Krishna.

Sober EveningAfter a fun filled and exciting day, the evenings the spent in sobriety when people meet friends and relatives and exchange sweets and festive greetings. It is said the spirit of Holi encourages the feeling of brotherhood in society and even the enemies turn friend on this day. People of all communities and even religions participate in this joyous and colorful festival and strengthen the secular fabric of the nation.

Harms of Wet Holi Colors

Wet colours, mostly use Gentian violet as a colour concentrate which can cause skin dis-colouration and dermatitis.

Action Taken by Environmental Groups

Following the publication of these studies several environmental groups took up the cause to encourage people to return to a more natural way of celebrating Holi. Amongst these,

• Navdanya, Delhi published a book called Abir Gulal, which spoke of the biodiversity that was the source of natural colours.

• Development Alternatives, Delhi and Kalpavriksh, Pune have developed educational tools to teach children simple ways of making their own natural Holi colours.

The CLEAN India campaign has been teaching children how to make beautiful natural colours.

Make your own Holi colours

Holi festival lovers will be thrilled to know that it is possible to make simple natural colors in one’s own kitchen. Here are some very simple recipes to make natural colours:

Color Method of Preparation

Yellow 1) Mix turmeric (haldi) powder with chick pea flour (besan)

2) Boil Marigold or Tesu flowers in water

Yellow liquid color Soak peels of pomegranate (Anar) overnight.

Deep Pink Slice a beetroot and soak in water

Orange - red paste Henna leaves (mehndi) can be dried, powdered and mixed with water.

Purchase Natural Holi Colors

For those who do not have the time to make their own colours, there is the choice of buying natural Holi colours. Several groups are now producing and promoting such colours, although it is important to verify the ingredients of the colours and ensure you know enough about the source.

2. The Holi Bonfire

The burning of fuel wood to create the bonfire for Holika Dahan presents another serious environmental problem. According to a news article, studies done in the state of Gujarat reveal that each bonfire uses around 100 kg of wood, and considering that approximately 30,000 bonfires are lit in the state of Gujarat just for one season, this leads to a wastage of a staggering amount of wood. Groups such as Sadvichar Parivar are now advocating one symbolic community fire, rather than several smaller bonfires across the city as a way to reduce wood consumption. Others are also suggesting that these fires be lit using waste material rather than wood.

Ideally, the joyous festival of Holi is meant to celebrate the arrival of spring while the colors used in Holi are to reflect of the various hues of spring season. But unfortunately, in modern times Holi does not stand for all things beautiful. Like various other festivals, Holi too has become ruthlessly commercialized, boisterous and yet another source of environmental degradation. To de-pollute Holi and make it in sync with nature, as it is supposed to be, several social and environmental groups are proposing a return to more natural ways of celebrating Holi.

The aim of this articles is to generate awareness amongst people about the various harmful effects around Holi celebrations and encourage people to celebrate an eco friendly Holi!

1. Harmful Effects of Chemical Colours

In earlier times when festival celebrations were not so much commercialized Holi colors were prepared from the flowers of trees that blossomed during spring, such as the Indian Coral Tree (parijat) and the Flame of the Forest (Kesu), both of which have bright red flowers. These and several other blossoms provided the raw material from which the brilliant shades of Holi colours were made. Most of these trees also had medicinal properties and Holi colors prepared from them were actually beneficial to the skin. Over the years, with the disappearance of trees in urban areas and greater stress for higher profits these natural colours came to be replaced by industrial dyes manufactured through chemical processes.

Environmental studies have revealed that all forms of chemical Holi colors are hazardous.

Harmful Chemicals in Gulal

The dry colours, commonly known as gulals, have two components – a colorant that is toxic and a base which could be either asbestos or silica, both of which cause health problems. Heavy metals contained in the colorants can cause asthma, skin diseases and adversely affect the eyes.

These days, Holi colours are sold loosely, on the roads, by small traders who often do not know the source. Sometimes, the colours come in boxes that specifically say ‘For industrial use only’.

3. A Dry Holi?

In the current situation, when most cities in India are facing acute water scarcity, the wasteful use of water during Holi, is also being questioned. It is common for people to douse each other with buckets of water during Holi, and children often resort to throwing water balloons at each other. The idea of a dry Holi seems alien at first, especially as the climate becomes warmer around Holi, and the water provides welcome relief from the heat. However, considering that in some urban areas, citizens can go without water for several days, it seems wasteful to use so much water simply for a celebration.

Holi PoojaHoli Pooja takes place a day before the Holi Festival. This day is called as ‘Holika Dahan’. There is no special pooja performed on the Holi day. This day is only meant for celebrations and play of colors. Holika Dahan is the major ritual performed at the time of Holi which is also considered

an important Holi Puja. People light bonfires on the eve of Holi festival to celebrate the victory of ‘good’ over ‘bad’ which is called Holika Dahan.

Holi Pooja or Holika Dahan

• People extend the log centre with twigs, dried leaves, branches of trees and other combustible material.

• On the day of Holika Dahan, an effigy of Holika and Prahlad is placed on the huge heap of woods.

• Effigy of Holika is made of combustible material while Prahlad’s effigy is made of non-combustible material.

• On the eve of Holi, the heap is set alight and the people chant Rakshoghna Mantras of the Rig Veda to cast away the evil spirits.

• Left over ashes is collected by people next morning. These ashes are considered holy and are smeared on the limbs of the body as Holi Prasad.

• Smearing of body limbs is an act of purification.

Holi Pooja is performed in a different manner in some communities. Marwari women offer Holi Pooja in the afternoon and evening i.e. before setting fire to ‘Holika’. It is called ‘Thandi Holi’. The whole Pooja process is considered very auspicious for the married women. It ensures well-being and healthy life of their husband.

Amit Shukla(EMC Division)

Holi In BrajBraj bhoomi encompasses the region of Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Phalen, Nandgaon and Barsana, all of those having played an important role in Hindu mythology, where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. Amorous songs, devotional and religious fervor and sprinkled colors present a delightful scene. There are slight differences in the ways these places celebrate Holi. The most notable spots that attract the tourists for their unique ways of celebrating Holi are Phalen, Nandagao and Barsana. In Phalen, a huge bonfire is lit on the full moon night to commemorate the victory of good over evil and the Prahlad-Holika episode is re-enacted. However, the most interesting fact is that the local priests walk through the lighted fire and come out unscathed!

Holi, the festival of colors is celebrated with a great deal of fervor and enthusiasm throughout the state of Uttar Pradesh. But differences mark the way in which they are celebrated. The small town of Barsana located at a distance of about 42 km from Mathura is well known for its

distinctive manner of celebrating Holi. Barsana, the birth place of Radha, Lord Krishna’s beloved attracts a large number of visitors each year when it celebrates Holi.

On this particular day, the men of Nandgaon come to Barsana. Their intention is to take over the temple of Shri Radhikaji. But the women of Barsana are reluctant to allow them to do so. They resist them with bamboo sticks. This is why here Holi is also popularly known as Latthmaar Holi.

The men are unable to strike back. All they can do is to splash colors on the women. The men who are caught are rather unfortunate. The men are forced to clad themselves in women’s clothes, apply cosmetics and dance like ladies in front of everybody.

This is embarrassing to them but others have their fair share of laughter. However everything is done in the right spirit. It is a mock battle and both the victors and the vanquished enjoy everything thoroughly. According to legend, Lord Krishna met with similar kind of treatment from the gopis.

Just the reverse happens on the next day. The men of Barsana drench the women of Nandgaon.

The air reverberates with holy songs on the occasion of Holi. These songs known as Hori are based on the conservations between Krishna and Radha.

It is indeed a delight to watch all the people participate in this unrestrained merry making. It is pleasantly entertaining and provides everyone with a lot of joy.

Barsana Holi, Uttar Pradesh

Celebrating an eco-friendly(“e”) Holi !!Holi is coming close, India’s festival of colours that heralds spring and harvest, “the season of hope and new beginnings in life”. But for some it is a nation-wide paint fight without guns!!

Dry and wet colours were originally prepared naturally from the flowers and vegetables. However, with shortage of time in our lifestyles, and in the quest of more long-lasting strong colours, chemical and artificial colours are being used. The harmful effects of these chemicals on our body and eyes have forced us to take it up seriously.

This year also, I have decided to play HOLI in an Eco Friendly way

as usual but the only and foremost difference is that I had pledged to plan for it in advance so that my decision does not go futile unlike several past years. No Skin Side effects, more Fun and obviously Cost Effective. I thought to share it with my colleagues so that they can also adopt it in the same way and of course the benefit attached is that, they will not be painting me with harmful colours….. . I hope they all still remember I was not a part of the celebration at Terrace last year only due to this…

Celebrating an eco-friendly Holi allows you to enjoy each and every moment just like a normal Holi celebration. An eco-friendly celebration gives you full freedom to have unlimited fun as well pleasure of protecting nature.

We should use only natural and home made colours during Holi. Chemical based colours cannot only harm your skin, eyes, hair, etc; but also cause permanent disorder to your precious organs. It is also very difficult to wash-out these fake colours while taking bath.

Important is to know a simple and quick way of making some eco-friendly colours for Holi.

• Put some pieces of beet-root in boiling water and let it stay overnight. Amazing coloured water will be ready to be used for Holi in the morning.

• Take some black grapes and amla and cut them in fine pieces. Put the pieces in boiling water and let the water cool down to get a nice black colour for Holi.

• Dry petals of marigold flower in shadow and grind them in a mixer; a yellow is ready for you. You can also use turmeric powder as yellow colour. Turmeric powder is very good for skin.

• Prepare green colour by putting spinach, mint and neem leaves in hot water and let it stay for some time. You can also make dry green colour by grinding dried leaves of spinach, mint and neem leaves.

Also, we should avoid using plastic bags and balloons lot of people have a habit of throwing small plastic bags and balloons filled with water on each other. The remains of which create environmental pollution. Hitting each other with plastic bags and balloons during Holi can cause harm to some external organs. You should also stop other people from doing this. I still remember days when I was hard hit by such balloons when I was out for inescapable reasons during Holi days.

Next step is to share your natural colours with your friends and relatives. Such sharing of eco-friendly colours will encourage your friends and relatives to celebrate an eco-friendly Holi. In-fact, you can make a plan with your friends or relatives to prepare natural colours one day before Holi, as I have planned. This activity will help you to involve more and more people to celebrate an eco-friendly Holi with you.

Lastly, we should avoid wasting water. Every time I observe our water tank running short of water on the day of holi, despite being too big for normal consumption. Though cool splashes of water are worth enjoying, we should use it in limited amount. Using natural colours is one of the best ways to avoid wastage of water. As you do not require much water to clean these colours from your compounds, buildings, premises and your body, a considerable amount of water can be saved. You can also save water by celebrating Holi with dry eco-friendly colours.

So it is better to go for naturally made colors and conform to the present day need of an “Eco friendly Holi” to save this beautiful planet “Earth” to make it even more sustainable and off course more colorful. That would make the festival of Holi a real Holy occasion to celebrate.

One last way to celebrate this festival of color is to try preparing (also sharing)

Mouth watering delicacies like Gujhias “one of my favourites” can finally produce grand enthralling effect to the celebrations.

The recepie is as under:

Ingredients:-

For cover : 1 cup plain flour (maida), 1 tablespoon ghee, water to knead.

For Filling : 1 cup khoya, 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (khaskhas), 1 teaspoon cardamom powder, 1 tablespoon crushed almond, 1/4 cup sugar ground, 10 to 15 raisins, Oil for deep frying.

Preparation

• Mix flour and ghee well.

• Add enough water to make soft pliable dough.

• Keep aside.

• Roast khoya to a light pink by stirring continuously over low heat.

• Cool and break in fine crumbs with fingers.

• Mix all other ingredients to khoya.

• Check for sweetness. Add more sugar if required.

• Make small (4 “) rounds of dough, not too thin not too thick.

• Place 1 teaspoon. Filling in one half of round.

• Fold over the other half, sealing in the mixture.

• Seal edges by twisting or pressing together.

• Make all in the same way.

• Deep fry in hot ghee on low till light brown on both sides.

• Drain and cool completely before storing and finally ENJOY IT!!

So, lets try to celebrate an eco-friendly Holi to add more colours of safety and satisfaction to our celebration and do not get carried away with the fun involved in festivals and forget nature. Celebrate an eco-friendly Holi to avoid its exploitation this time.

And yes, do send Holi SMSes and Holi cards to your friends with the message “An eco-friendly Holi is the authentic happy Holi”.

Come let’s play e-Holi by exchanging colorful greetings.

Suruchi SoodSenior officer - HR, Era E-Zone (I) Limited

Memorable HoliAs we all know that the Holi festival is symbolic festival of colours to denote victory of goodness over evils. This is based on Hindu myth that once upon a time king Hirnakashyap acquired much power by devotion/ sacrifices to GOD and become so proud that he himself started understating GOD and continued ignoring the real GOD. The people in his territory were forced to worship him only instead of GOD.

Hirnakayshap’s son Prahalad who was real devotee of GOD refused to accept him as GOD with the result that Hirnakayshap started punishing his son bhakt Prahalad in different ways to compel him to accept him GOD and forget the almighty but when he failed to convince his son bhakt Prahalad, he finally decided to put his son to flame with connivance of his sister Holika. She had the blessing from the GODESS that flame cannot burn/destroy her while she covers herself with blessing sheet given by GOODESS.

The traitor king asked his sister Holika to sit in flame by taking bhakt Prahalad in her lap but Holika was destroyed by flame and bhakt Prahalad was saved by the blessing sheet which truly supported the good cause instead of covering evil cause.

This Holi festival is celebrated to memories the event. This falls at the junction of change of weather that is outgoing winter and start of summer season i.e. Basant ritu. This weather is very significant for not only the human being but all the animal and nature also. Most of deciduous trees start shedding the old leaves and with new sprouts. Most important is that all the winter season annuals, Trees & Shrub blooms in full swing at this weather and the appearance of colour/greenery nature can not be overlooked.

When we talk about Holi we can not afford to miss the variant of colours but it is sorry to say that colours available in the market are not trustworthy and are artificial, which is some time harmful to human body. The vermillion used on forehead during the festival by everybody in descent way is also not spared from the adulteration.

In this sequence I would like to suggest that we should use natural colour to greet each other i.e. flower of Tesue (Botanical Name – Butea frondosa) comman name – flame of the forest, which produces in vermillion colour in water and do not have any adverse effect and good for depicting Holi festival.

This is the right time to enjoy the variant of colours and greenry in the park with children and family. It shall not be out of topic to mention that the Mughal Garden in Rastrapati Bhawan is likely to open for a month free to witness colours of natures. One must visit the Mughal Garden with family and friends to enjoy the pleasure.
