The Roadrunner A Biweekly Newsletter of Blue Skies West

2 Deadline: Wednesday, Nov 25 @ [email protected]

Continued from page 1

Residents may relocate to the Lobby parking lot, Towers 3 & 4 parking lot (any space marked as BST West Employee), or employee parking along the perimeter by Towers 3 & 4.

We will be renumbering spaces (so we don’t have duplicate #’s in Towers 3 & 4 carports and Towers 1 & 2 carports) - you will receive your new space # from Resident Services prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Residents in the Oaks, Lakes, or Gardens who rent a carport will be asked to relocate their vehicles to an area near your homes (not near the towers).

NOTE TO ALL: Parking will be at a premium, please be patient when trying to find parking near the main building. Employees will be asked to park in the Freedom House parking lots during this time.

New Lobby Computers – Will be installed any day now. Please note they are touch screen computers so you’ll be able to navigate by either using the mouse or touching the screen.

Housekeeping Checklist – Attached to this week’s Roadrunner is a copy of the Housekeeper’s Checklist. The general cleaning is accomplished weekly; however, the detailed work is rotated (see schedule below, included in each Roadrunner). Please keep in mind, if you would like deep cleaning in certain areas - there needs to be a tradeoff. The housekeeper does not have time to deep clean areas and be able to accomplish all regular cleaning, too.

Housekeeping Spotlight Item – These weekly items give housekeepers an area of special interest. Housekeepers will still adhere to their checklists, but will pay special attention to the Spotlight Items of the week

SCAM ALERT By: Resident Counselor,[email protected]

Current Scams - There have been no new scams reported from Blue Skies residents this week, but here is a couple to watch for which continue to be passed around:

1. IRS Scam – a phone call states you owe the IRS money and to return the call. The IRS always contacts you by letter. Do not return the call.

2. Letter or e-mail stating you have won a foreign lottery or online sweepstakes - Any letter or email that asks you to pay taxes, fees, shipping or insurance to claim a prize is a scam.

3. Desperate help for family member or friend - You get a call, email, or text from someone claiming to be a relative or friend who says he/she needs you

4 Deadline: Wednesday, Nov 25 @ [email protected]

to wire cash immediately to help him/her out of a jam (like paying a hospital bill, or the caller is without funds in foreign country). The caller asks you to keep the request a secret. Get a return phone number from him/her and verify the story with other relatives or friends before sending any money.

Seek assistance from Resident Services or Wellness if in doubt on whether something is a scam.

NAME CHANGE By: Director of Compliance, Kathie Estrada

Wilford Hall Medical Center has changed its name. You may have noticed they recently put up their new sign as well with the new name: Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, WHASC. Starting with this edition of the newsletters, we will refer to Wilford Hall as WHASC.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION FUND By: BST West Resident Council

It has been a long-standing tradition for Blue Skies residents to express an additional “Thank You,” through the Employee Appreciation Fund. This fund is administered for us by our Finance Department, and you can participate by placing a check (please use checks instead of cash) into the slot marked “Employee Appreciation Fund” at the Front Desk or by making arrangements with Finance for a specific amount to be added to your Monthly Service Statement. These funds are gifted on our behalf twice a year (June and December) to all hourly paid employees (with the exception of the Beauty Salon and Barber Shop employees – the only employees allowed to receive tips). Your check must be received at the Front Desk no later than Friday, Nov 27, by 5pm to be included in the upcoming distribution. Checks should be made payable to Blue Skies of Texas and marked for Employees’ Appreciation Fund. Thank you. SPECIAL NOTE: In addition to those individuals you see every day such as the wait staff, housekeepers and custodians, and Front Desk and Maintenance teams, we’ve been asked: “Who are some of the behind-the-scenes folks our Appreciation Fund reaches?” Here is a sampling (not all inclusive): Dishwashers, finance clerks, overnight Front Desk and Courtesy Officer teams, Human Resource Specialists, overnight shift nursing and assisted living teams, cooks and etc.

BOB’S BLOG By: B b

Bob’s mom wears combat boots! Well, at least she did for Veterans Day. And on a lighter note…Bob or I (or maybe both of us) need to spend some time on a psychiatrist’s couch. A few weeks ago he suddenly refused to go down any stairs. It was like he completely forgot how to get his four legs working together. For over a week he literally hopped down the stairs, one step at a time. Bunny Bob??

THANKS By: Jim & Dottie Conner

Our super dining staff has done it again; on Wednesday, Nov 11, the cooks managed to provide extra lunches to an influx of starving young cadets and guests, then clear the decks from the Veterans Day ceremony while setting up for the cocktail party and B&A dinner, then clear away after serving 300 diners to set up for breakfast and the Board of Governors Meet-and-Greet. Whew! And they were still cheerful! We appreciate all of your extra hard work at times like these. You're all troupers, and we're glad to have you here!

ASSISTANCE NEEDED By: Pat Kelley

HAM BAND NEWS By: Bill Overacker

A “first” happened within the past month in the Blue Skies West Amateur Radio Room!! With the resumption of political relationships between the USA and Cuba, the first contact with a Cuban civilian amateur radio operator occurred!! Besides this contact, others included Guantanamo Bay, Aruba, Munich, Argentina, Morocco, Mexico, and the Navy’s “Tin Can Net.” Being able to speak in either voice or code with other individuals from different cultures with a similar interest enhances worldwide harmony. Joe McDaniels, one of our founding members, is now a “silent key.” We mourn his loss. The next meeting of the BST West Amateur Radio Club is on Thursday, Dec 17, at 11:30am in the Roadrunner Lounge. All are welcome to attend this gathering to participate in this club’s happenings, and learn more about this exciting hobby. Please contact Mike Slominski for more information. 73 (Best regards in Ham language).

FESTIVE AFTERNOON TEA By: Brigitte Bridges

The ritual of having tea has been a source of fascination and pleasure for more than a century and a half. For many of us, our first encounter with this ritual occurred when we were children charmed by the smallness of the cups and saucers, delighted with the tiny sandwiches and other treats and thrilled to step away

from our everyday selves. That early affection has kept its hold on us even in maturity, so let’s take a moment away for the cares of the day and enter a world where grace is still important and relaxation is the goal. It is our pleasure to cordially invite all ladies and gentleman, from Village East and West, to a festive afternoon tea on Wednesday, Feb 3, at 3pm, in the Sky Lounge. Mr. Steve Nelsen will add to the festivities by providing music for our listening pleasure. We look forward to your company and participation and a beginning of a new tradition at Blue Skies of Texas. Cost is $23.95 per person. Reservations are limited to 36 guests per campus. Sign-up sheets are in the CC rooms. The deadline to sign-up is Wednesday, Jan 27.

PRAY FOR OUR NATION By: Ren Vandesteeg

Residents are invited to join others to pray for our nation on the first and third Thursdays of every month, 10am in the Helen LeMay Room. Our country needs our prayers. Please pray!

I DIDN’T PRAY OR SAY ANYTHING By: Ren Vandesteeg

Jesus said, “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in Heaven. But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.” Matthew 10: 32, 33, The Holy Bible. Martin Niemoller, a Protestant pastor who opposed the Nazi regime and lived seven years in Nazi concentration camps, wrote the following well known quote: “First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me.” U.S. Holocaust Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW, Washington, DC. Both quotes should move us to care about Christians being slaughtered by ISIS. We can’t go fight for them anymore, but we sure can pray, even in our old age. If we don’t care . . . don’t pray, who will care for us . . . eternally?

DARTS ASSOCIATION By: Tom Carter

A regulation dart board has been donated and installed in the Billiard Association/Dabblers room. I’m interested in forming a BST West Darts Association with regularly scheduled tournaments. If you’re interested in throwing darts, please contact me or email [email protected]. If we have enough participants, we’ll meet to decide when we throw, type of games played, etc. To practice throwing or have a personal game, check out the billiard closet key from the Front Desk, and use the darts in the large jar on the closet shelf. See you at the toe line.

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE By: Gayl Ganskow

If you are familiar with the card game Gin Rummy, you have a head start to understanding Mah Jongg (MJ). There are no playing cards here because in MJ you mix, pick, discard and arrange your tiles in combinations for a winning hand. The ideal game is played with four players; however, two or three players can play and have a great time as well. Come and enjoy! We play three times a week, no sign up, just show up. Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B & A Days - 2nd Wed of each month in Card Room 112, the Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop on the first floor.
